Wahine sand update
Part of UH’s release from this morning. read the rest at uhathletics.com
The University of Hawai’i women’s sand volleyball is gearing up for its third season of NCAA competition after wrapping up fall training in November. The Rainbow Wahine spent five straight weeks of training in preparation for the regular season which commences in March 2014.
A total of 14 student-athletes—six returnees and eight newcomers—conducted camp on its new sand practice courts, part of the TC Ching Athletics Complex that is nearing completion.
g the returnees on this season’s squad are Ashley Johnson, Karlee Riggs, Katie Spieler, Olivia Urbanand Ku`ulei Zalopany. Brittany Tiegs will make her much-anticipated debut in 2014. She redshirted last year after transferring from Florida State, where she earned All-America honors as a Seminole.
Meanwhile, eight newcomers hit the sand this fall—Emily Carman, London Chow, Karissa Cook, Kelsi Delgado, Hannah Rooks, Sydney Shinn, Mikayla Tucker and Hannah Zalopany.
“I really like our squad this year,” Wong said. “We’re bigger and more physical with a group of newcomers who have a lot of potential.”
The team will be further boosted by nearly a half dozen indoor players who join the fold once spring training rolls around. And less than a week after fall camp ended the Rainbow Wahine received a national letter of intent from Kendra Koelsch from Huntington Beach High School in California. The 6-1 Koelsch and her partner recently finished fourth at the 2013 Club Beach Volleyball National Championship. She will suit up for the Rainbow Wahine in 2015
UH will host at least two tournaments this spring with Stanford, USC, Loyola Marymount, Arizona, Nebraska and defending national champions Long Beach State among the team’s slated to come to the islands. A complete 2014 schedule will be announced later.
Wow I didn’t think it would be that many indoor players that joined this season. I guess, Ashley, Tai, Aly, Nikki, Tayler and maybe Emily?
whoops, I just realized I forgot about Ginger, so probably not Emily.
I could have sworn that Koelsch was a 2014 recruit not a 2015.
3. Koelcsh is a 2014 recruit. It’s just that since that the sand season is played in 2015 so she is a 2014-15 recruit
Are they trying to go with the bikini workouts this year? More viewers watching!
Is any tournaments gonna be on TV? OC Sports is broadcasting the high school sand championships.
Excited to see the Sand Bows in action this coming Spring. With sand courts open on campus, should see a lot of student support in the Spring. GO BOWS!!!
#1 Warriorfan: don’t think Tai or Emily will be playing Sand and Nikki and Tayler are not definites.
Mendoza also playing sand.
That’s surprising since Tai was one of the better players last season and playing sand helped her indoor game.
Mendoza surprised as well, since she didn’t make the top five duos last season.
I’d like to see duos of
Tiegs/Riggs
Cook/Chow
Delgado/Tucker
Kastl/Longo
Speiler/Long
What do they have in store from Saturday night ? Will they out do last year, will someone get engaged ?
I’ll ask people close to three players, if they know the plans and post Friday after the Davis match. I figa one of them gotta know.
Have you noticed how irrelevant attendance has become this year ? The NCAA no longer updates their attendance page like they did last year. The lady at Wisconsin might still be doing it but it can’t be found anywhere. Attendance was once a weekly part of articles in Hawai`i and places like VT but no more, interesting.
Just heard Scott Robbs on the radio and he said one of the justifications for Hawaii NOT hosting would be them ending the season on the road, so the NCAA doesn’t have to fly Hawaii and they can stay on the mainland. Doesn’t Hawaii have roundtrip tickets already paid for?
15. setaone. What does that justify? The COST of not having to fly UH to the west coast? Doesn’t make much sense, when they didn’t care about making money with UH hosting the 1/2 rounds here. UH would be on the road for 8/9 days and miss 7 days of classes if that happened.
No idea what it justifies. Just mentioning what Scott Robbs said. I don’t agree with it as an excuse in any way.
15. i would think UH has round trip tickets to come home.
will check with Shoji tonight about travel plans since they may be watching the selections show from the airport Sunday.
interesting… with hawaii on the bubble, no one could argue with a decision to keep them on the mainland and
not host.
Another big upset,Purdue over Nebraska.
the team will be back Sunday and watch the selection show.
hardly think that at No. 10 they are on ‘the bubble.’
21. Well this week hawaiis rpi won’t be too good. Ucla lost today, northwestern did, Arizona is loosing to usc.
Brandon I’ve been thinking that the last two weeks and it went up both weeks
23. This week all of our teams are playing strong teams. Texas and Wichita won. I believe San Diego did too
