Wahine-49er rewind

our breaking news story

Senior All-American hitter Emily Hartong put down 14 kills to lead No. 6 Hawaii to its 12th straight victory Friday night, sweeping Long Beach State 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 in a Big West volleyball match in Long Beach Calif.

Freshman hitter Nikki Taylor added 11 kills and sophomore hitter Tai Manu-Olevao added 10 for the Rainbow Wahine (14-1, 3-0) at the Walter Pyramid. Hartong picked up her seventh double-double of the season when adding 11 digs against the 49ers (8-8, 1-2) in the 89-minute win.

Hawaii out-blocked The Beach 11-8 with junior middle Kalei Adolpho in on six. The Wahine also won the dig battle 33-29, led by senior libero Ali Longo’s match-high 12 digs.

Junior middle Chisom Okpala led the 49ers with nine kills and junior libero Taylor Jackson finished with 10 digs.

Hawaii travels to UC Irvine Saturday. The Wahine hold a 29-0 advantage over the Anteaters.

For the most part, thought the Wahine were very efficient and Uiato has a very nice match. UH hit 310 to .079 for the Beach.
only real stumble came in Set 2 after leading 8-0 and 22-12 49ers then went on a 7-0 run behind Carbajac’s serves, several of which ended up being overpasses or near overpasses. Uiato had no where to go a couple of times and Okpala got ended up with 4 kills and 2 blocks during that run. she finished with 9 kills on the night.
Thought Manu-Olevao bounced back well after hitting .000 through 2 sets. 6-6-14, she was 4-0-10 in Set 3.

  2. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 7:41 pm

Wahine also served well, 1 ace, 3 SE. 49ers 0 aces, 3 SEs. Thought they passed well, were good in transition.Thought Uiato went to Hartong too often too early but started to diversify. Vorster still having issues at times, a couple of net violations but she came back from a hitting error a couple of times with a block

  3. Grammy October 4, 2013 7:48 pm

Out hit, out dug and out blocked add up to out played. In control most of the way and answered all ‘threats’ LBSU could muster. Seniors kept Wahine on even keel and did not let team lose focus even when LBSU managed to ‘rally’ back a few times. Good win, good team win, good start to road trip. Go Wahine!

  4. Hot October 4, 2013 7:53 pm

Looks like while the general thought is to establish the middles early to free the outsides, UH’s line of thought is to establish Hartong early. Good thing Hartong is Hartong.

  5. Ron October 4, 2013 8:07 pm

LBS had a bunch of athletes playing volleyball. Hawaii had a TEAM playing volleyball. Brian is a good recruiter but Dave can coach circles around him. This Wahine team seems to improve each outing. Our depth not only helps in the matches, it helps to make practice very competitive.

  6. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 8:09 pm

    4. If you look at the play-by-play, UH’s first kills came from Taylor (2) then Manu-Olevao, then Adolpho
Hartong’s first kill put UH up 9-7

  7. Bow Alumni October 4, 2013 8:20 pm

Congrats Wahine!! Uiato is really coming into her own! Now I’m seeing real glimpses of Ah-Mow and Kamana’o!

  8. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 8:21 pm

Thought the announcers did a pretty good job, except for butchering Manu-Olevao and Uiato names.
Barnett (Pepperdine) and McPeak (UCLA) They did seem to be pro-Long Beach State until it became obvious that UH was going to dominate Set 1.
thought it funny that they would say what a legend Gimmillaro was then when they put up the coaches’ two numbers, they had to say, Oh, yeah, Shoji is the all-time winningest coach and how combined the two had almost 2,000 wins. kind of missed the point that Brian G had 744 to Shoji’s 1,100-plus.

  9. Warriorfan October 4, 2013 8:22 pm

Thought Long Beach was horrible. Good job for the wahine taking care of business (except for that hiccup late in set 2)

  10. Warriorfan October 4, 2013 8:23 pm

It was great that the wahine were so dominant on tv and with Misty in the stands watching.

  11. LC October 4, 2013 8:26 pm

I don’t know how serious UH was about Wilmes or how serious she was about UH. What I do know is that she was here on a visit but I don’t know if it was official or unofficial.

Both Wilmes and a reporter from her home town were pretty active on twitter after she returned home.

The reporter was making a big deal over where will she go,who will she pick UH or LBSU even naming the date and time in which she would make her announcement, like she was the nations # 1 player.

    I found it amusing.

  12. Cindy Luis October 4, 2013 8:38 pm

    9. well the Beach didn’t look very sharp. but they put in Hampton to start. This was only the 4th time she had played this season to that may have thrown off the starting rotation. The 49ers definitely struggled early. I don’t think Hampton had played in a match since Sept. 1 if I read the stats right.

  13. ALLAN October 4, 2013 8:54 pm

REALLY SAD THAT OTHER SCHOOLS’ ANNOUNCERS RESORT TO BELITTLING UH’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND “LEFT-HANDED” COMPLEMENTS REGARDING HAWAII’S TEAM IN TRYING TO MAKE THEIR OWN ATHLETES LOOK BETTER THAN THEY ARE. LOTTA RESENTMENT AGAINST HAWAII.

  14. Ron October 4, 2013 9:02 pm

I thought the announcers did a good job. They can’t report a rout without losing viewership. Its their job to make it sound exciting even when its not. The comments made by Holly are about as gushy as she gets.

  15. setaone October 4, 2013 9:27 pm

    12. They said some very nice things about Hawaii, Uiato, Hartong and Taylor especially.

  16. Hot October 4, 2013 9:37 pm

    6. I meant the number of attempts Hartong had in that first set.

  17. Warriorfan October 4, 2013 9:50 pm

    10. Glad Wilmes chose the Beach, if she can’t get any playing time for such an awful team, she’s not the kind of athlete UH needs.

  18. steve October 4, 2013 10:36 pm

Why doesn’t Shoji play Kastl more? She hits harder than Olevau and is the same height.
I don’t see why she doesn’t see more game time as she and Olevau are pretty even.

  19. Purple&Gold October 4, 2013 11:50 pm

STEALING ONE FROM GOOD OL’ ‘A’…
SHOJI’S MET HIS MATCH IN THE NCAA, BOY.
HOPING/PRAYING THAT ALL THINGS WILL JUST FALL INTO PLACE, I.E. “RESTING UPON ONE’S LAURELS” (DA ‘HWN’ WAY), IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE.
*PERHAPS* BEING MORE DILIGENT ABOUT POSTSEASON ARRANGEMENTS WAS/IS IN THE CALLING; AGAIN THOUGH WHEN IT’S TIME TO TRAVEL, UH WILL BE HAWAI’I AND CONSEQUENTLY WILL PRETEND STUNNED/AMAZED THAT THEIR GOOD NAME WILL ‘N’OT BE ENOUGH TO GET THEM A SEED (AND THEREBY A SUBREGIONAL AT HOME). UH MAY BE A TOP TEN PROGRAM–CURRENLTY–BUT THE NCAA WVB LANDSCAPE IS CHANGING VERY RAPIDLY..HAWAI’I SHOULD BE TRAVELING THIS 2013, ALTHOUGH I’D PRESUME THEM TO BE AT MOST ONE OF THE SIXTEEN BEST TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY.

LONG BEACH, I’M CERTAIN, WILL HAVE THEIR ACT TOGETHER IN NOVEMBER.
THAT SECOND SET TONIGHT WAS THE TIGHTEST, OBVIOUSLY, AND IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE SET IN WHICH JOY MILEY WAS MOVED TO HITTING FROM MIDDLE TO THE PINS FOR A BRAND NEW TRY AT SWINGING FROM RS. A HEALTHY 49ERS SQUAD’LL PROVE DEADLY FOR THE BOWS IN THE WORST MONTH POSSIBLE.

    S: JULEY
    M1: OKPALA
    O1: DELAINEY
    OP: MILEY
    M2: HAMPTON / LIB: JACKSON
    O2: REID/CABRAJAC

THESE SHOULD MAKE IT HAPPEN–LONG BEACH STATE HAS ‘N’EVER GIVEN A CRAP ABOUT THE TRADITION THAT UH HAS HELD SO DEAR, IN ITS MAKING IT SOOO SPECIAL.

    ANYWAY.

I’LL BE WATCHING (&READING) TO SEE ALL THE “CREATIVE” EXAMPLES, IN REBELLIOUS UPROAR, THAT ARE SPOKEN OF WHEN THE NCAA SENDS UH PACKING TO ARIZONA IN EARLY DECEMBER. I’M LOOKING FOR THAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT, MYSELF, HOWEVER SHOULD UH WIN THEIR 5TH NC.
    😉
    🙂
    :p

  20. Ki October 5, 2013 3:09 am

    18. You’re NUTZ! The only reason the beach were even in that set 2 is because Dave subbed in Ginger Long for Nikki Taylor (HUGE drop off). Had he kept the original starters in throughout the match, it would have been a BLOWOUT.

  21. menehune October 5, 2013 4:28 am

    18. Purple&Gold should change his name to O-For…..as in O for 10. LOL.

  22. Jake October 5, 2013 4:57 am

    17. Agree on Kastl.

  23. Purple&Green October 5, 2013 7:06 am

    ^
    Yeah.
Can any one say “2008 NCAAs” (da shadowed event)??

On another note, I absolutely LOVE the game of Cribbage..probably wouldn’t want to play with some of the folks here, tho.

The Rainshadow Peggers will be meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 and 6 p.m. Oct. 2 for a Doubles Cribbage competition at the Sequim VFW:

169 E. Washinton St. in Sequim
    Call, 360-457-8356
    😉

  24. Ruddy166 October 5, 2013 7:38 am

Ignore ole P&G. He’s just upset cuz Washongton lost to Colorado 3-1. Colorado, Really? COLORADO?? Can you spell O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D?

  25. Ashley October 5, 2013 8:20 am

purple&gold if you hate Hawaii so much why come here in the first place

  26. tako October 5, 2013 8:39 am

Tough match coming up. Viewed some still photos of last night’s match, sure looks like Emily was elevating very high on her attacks, at least a head above everyone. The blockers are very consistent, at least heads even with net height and reaching for the block. They are looking good. -Go Rainbow Wahine and come back home with a sweep…

  27. Ki Mo October 5, 2013 9:28 am

On a different note… With #1 Washington losing last night to an unranked team, who will be the new #1? #2 USC’s only loss came at the hands of San Diego in 4 sets, the same team #6 Hawaii lost to in 5 sets. #4 Texas LOST to Hawaii. As for Penn St., well they lost to Texas (who lost to Hawaii) AND Michigan St. Will #3 Florida make its way to #1?

  28. Warriorfan October 5, 2013 10:05 am

I don’t even think Washington deserves to be a top 10 team, there best win (only win over a ranked team) is over Oregon who just lost at Arizona.

  29. Purple&Gold October 5, 2013 10:22 am

Too many ‘buttercups’ on this blog. 😉

  30. Msrpantoja1@Huh.'A'loha October 5, 2013 10:34 am

    28. Yes, but who cares if they have anything decent to say (or not) in contribution.
What BG needs to do is to focus his game on LBS’s strength–their middles, contingent upon Hampton’s health of course.

With crisp passing I too believe that Okpala is MB1.
I also like Miley playing OPP with quick attacks.

A lefty outside @ OH2, who can pass, would also be scary for opposing teams.

    “S: JULEY
    M1: OKPALA
    O1: DELAINEY
    OP: MILEY
    M2: HAMPTON / LIB: JACKSON
O2: CABRAJAC” ..as has been put is The Beach’s best chances.
    😛

  31. Kuhio October 5, 2013 10:34 am

PG…thanks for the bulletin board material. We’ll put this up when LBSU visits UH. In watching Hampton she is obviously hurting. If this conference had a tournament it would better to save her. Oh well. LBSU did well when Okpala was in front row. other than that it was 2 for 1 points wise. Gimillaro use to run a quick offense but this team didn’t other than Okpala. You have to be impressed with UH defense from blocking to digs. It’s not just Longo, T-MO & Hartong & Uiato dug some smashes from LBSU. Wahine need to keep winning and then accept whatever comes. Don’t be a crybaby likeP&G. Any road to the finals won’t be easy. GO WAHINE.

  32. Warriorfan October 5, 2013 10:58 am

28-29 LOL at this person replying to himself.
Wish there was an ignore button or that Cindy would just ban it.

  33. jake October 5, 2013 11:55 am

    17. agree on your assessment on using Kastl more.

  34. K Tegami October 5, 2013 2:22 pm

How about Happy Birthday Ally Longo?

  35. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 2:32 pm

12 these were not ‘other school’s announcers. This was the Fox Sports West network team.

  36. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 2:34 pm

    33. She spells it Ali.

  37. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 2:39 pm

    13. Ron agree about it was about as gushy as McPeak gets. I didn’t listen to them the entire broadcast, especially at the beginning. So I may have missed some of the pregame assessments.
But I was a little surprised that, at the end, when Barnett asked McPeak if she really thought UH was a national contender and could they hang with the Pac-12, Big Ten late in the later rounds. Seemed as if they ignored UH’s wins over Texas and UCLA this year.

  38. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 2:39 pm

    18. P&G could you please not use you CAPS button?

  39. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 2:44 pm

    15. agree with the number of times they went to Hartong early 14 in Set 1. think I mentioned that in the running updates.

  40. hollycow October 5, 2013 3:01 pm

Penn St and Purdue tied 2-2.

  42. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 3:45 pm

20 Ki, think putting the blame on Long in Set 2 is misplaced.
    Long came in at 18-6
That big run (when it went from 22-12 to 22-19) included 2 service overpasses, one by Hartong, one by Longo. Cabrajac very tough serves and UH’s passing had Uiato, who was front row, playing very close to the net.
Also at 22-12 Kastl came in for Manu-Olevao on the left.
Long was blocked to make it 22-16, at which time Manu-Olevao came back in for Kastl and Taylor for Long
The Beach’s next 3 points came on a block of Taylor, a kill by Okpala and a block of Manu-Olevao.
At 22-19 Hartong was good her 3-meter attack, ending the 7-0 run.

  43. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 3:48 pm

    41. thanks was going to get to the top 25 when I’m done playing Kindergarten Cop here with deleting the name calling

  44. Haolebob October 5, 2013 5:10 pm

I am pretty sure I was watching the same game as the rest of you, but from the comments I am not so sure. I thought that McPeaks answer as to if UH could play with the Pac12 or the others was pretty on point. She seemed to me as if to say that UH could play with ANYBODY. Since I live on the Mainland I see a lot of the other rated teams play and if you listened to their announcers, you would not even know that UH played volleyball. I hope that the Wahines just play the way they did against the Beach and finish the league season without a loss as that is the only way that they could possibly get a bid for the regionals to be played in Hawai’i. As always
    “GO BOWS”.

  45. grace October 5, 2013 5:14 pm

Agree with the Kastl fans. Olevao is a great athlete, but does not have that so called swagger or “I’m ready” confidence like Kastl. I would love to experiment having Olevao, Kastl, and automatic Taylor at OH. The Molokai Pounder and All Everything Hartong at MB. Try leaving Vorster out and see our offense become even more lethal. Vorster’s a great block, but we need a little bit more animal coming out of that one Middle Attack. Emily made all conference as a MB too!

  46. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 5:15 pm

    44. I thought McPeak did have some nice things to say but seemed that they ignored that Hawaii has already beaten Texas and UCLA this season
As for regionals, they are predetermined. What UH is playing for is to host first-second rounds.

  47. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 5:19 pm

I just felt the announcers didn’t do their homework and will ill-prepared to discuss the national scene when looking at the poll. Even said Texas won its first NCAA title last year. Which isn’t true since Texas defeated Hawaii in 1988 for the title.

  48. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 5:21 pm

Tuaniga having a nice match. couple of kills and a block. Hartong with her 19th, gives UH its first lead at 16-15. TO UCI

  49. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 5:27 pm

Hartong aced. UCI takes a 22-20 lead. TO UH

  50. Cindy Luis October 5, 2013 5:31 pm

wahine hold off two set points but not a third, lose 25-22
