update on the SandBows

will be doing more of a story as the season gets closer. Opener is March 7

Went to campus practice today. They’re usually there M-W-F and at Queen’s on a couple of other days. He’s got 11 sand-specific, down from 14 in fall. Said a few players decided to go elsewhere. 5 players from indoor in Mendoza, Long, Longo, Passi, Taylor.  Higgins listed on the roster but didn’t see her.

Had a nice chat with Tiegs. She is scheduled to be partnered with Karissa Cook, the transfer from Stanford.

Wong says he doesn’t have all pairs finalized, couple of minor injury issues

So far it’s Tiegs-Cook

Nikki Taylor-Katie Spieler (almost a foot difference in height there)

Ginger Long-Ali Longo

Can you say who left the team?

  2. Cindy Luis February 21, 2014 9:40 pm

I would if I knew. I wasn’t paying attention to the roster in fall.

Mahalo, Cin! (I was confused on this update being ‘promised’ three and a half weeks ago)

Those names, for 1., tossed out: Kelsi Delgado, Ashley Johnson, Ashley Kastl, Emily Mount

I hope that Tiegs was able to process the interface satisfactorily. Wasn’t ‘Warriorfan’ somewhere around ..perhaps conducting his/her own interview? 😉

These are some interesting pairs. But I do really like the pair of Tiegs and Cook.

They updated the roster with head shots and have Higgins picture in for Passi and I saw the team photo and Passi is not in it. I’m guessing she isn’t playing sand anymore?

Also I can only name two recruits who were going to play but are no longer on the roster and they are Kelsi Delgado and Emily Carman.

Noticed they have two other men on the coaching staff, who are they?

  5. Feed 'em Malasadas February 21, 2014 11:27 pm

    2. If you weren’t paying attention to the roster in the fall, how did you admittedly know that Emily Carman was no longer on it?

I noticed that LBSU is not going to be “lacking” quite as much as people predicted too, with being the reigning national champions. There number one pair ends up being a 4x BW All-Star & a UCLA, Fab50, trx.

Tiegs and Cook SHOULD take them tho.

  6. Feed 'em Malasadas February 21, 2014 11:30 pm

Their number two will be Mackie – Cabrajac
Their number three ends up being Johnson – Jackson

Riggs/Tucker are another pairing that should have been mentioned above. Ku Z. is injured.
Looks like this season is shaping up to be a good one. Looking forward to the first serve of the season!!

Re: #5 “if you weren’t paying attention to the roster, how did you know Emily Carman is no longer on it”

Because vballfreak808 isn’t Cindy Luis? Post 2 is by Cindy Luis and Post 4 is by vballfreak808.

I thought London would be paired with someone else.
I guess Tiegs/Cook are pair number one and Riggs/Tucke number 2?

  10. Warriorfan February 22, 2014 1:00 pm

I really like Tiegs/Cook’s chances of winning the pair title.
I don’t think anyone is coming close to USC this year for the team title, they are just too deep and talented.

I just saw on volley talk UH has a german player playing next season? I wonder if that’s true. Sounds like a good recruiting class with Guinasso and Koelsch.

Long/Longo? I liked the Longo/Riggs pair last season

  12. Mainlandgal February 22, 2014 1:58 pm

#10: If I remember right, Longo/Riggs last season had one of the best W/L records and was very consistent throughout the season. They could have used a little height. Also, with Longo indoor as well last season, it took away some practice time from Riggs as she is sand only. This season both Riggs/Tucker are sand only. Better match-up IMHO. I agree and think Riggs/Tucker should fall somewhere between #2 and #3 ranked team. They’ll be a great team to keep an eye on this season for sure.

  13. Brandon February 22, 2014 2:21 pm

    11. Where do you find sand volleyball rankings? If I may ask

  14. Mainlandgal February 22, 2014 2:27 pm

By “ranked” I only meant the #2 or #3 pairs team for UH (of the 5 pairs that compete). Ranked was probably the wrong word to use. Sorry about that.

  15. Brandon February 22, 2014 2:42 pm

Ahh I see. It’s ok haha. I was just confused I was like 2, 3 in the country damn they must be good! But for uh I feel cook tiegs will be the #1 pair

  16. Cindy Luis February 22, 2014 3:23 pm

    5. perhaps because I’m not volleyball freak?
The pairs are as of yesterday. he may tweak them. He did not rank them so don’t know where they’re playing. as has happened in some matches, coaches switch up where they put their teams … a no. 1 may play at No. 2 … in order to get a better matchup. Or they are basically conceding the match at No. 1 and think their No. 1 team has a better shot at beating the other team’s No. 2 when play at 2.
    12. haven’t seen sand ranking yet. they should be on the AVCA site when announced.

  17. Cindy Luis February 22, 2014 3:24 pm

    7. ku z not the only injury.

  18. ItsOnYou February 22, 2014 3:45 pm

Katie Spieler (Ma’a’s niece) had been listed at 5’5″ from her So. year in HS *by MaxPreps* of which UH just ‘rolled’ with it, despite the fact that she, Longo, London, Mendoza are all clearly the same height; 5ft. 6in.–less than a 5’9″ Higgins also pictured.
    Po’okela has the proof: https://twitter.com/DiggingNaWahine/status/437291258185150464/photo/1

With the sand being an issue in the Ching box, UH won’t be going into the season wearing Sand Skins anymore but rather the top of the line with Sockwa Hi-Tops (on sale now for $14.50 in a beautiful olive green [Hawai’i] color).

If that doesn’t get Katie that extra inch..I don’t know what will. 😉

  19. Cindy Luis February 22, 2014 4:02 pm

Sand not the only issue. the courts aren’t ready. Wong is happy to be at Queen’s
the fans should be too since they won’t have to pay $6 to park.
but there will be bleacher seating when the Ching courts are done.

  20. Warriorfan February 22, 2014 5:40 pm

Olsen continues to be ineffective and starting, I don’t get it. Fey did admirable thursday.

  21. Cindy Luis February 22, 2014 5:42 pm

WF, there is a new thread for today’s match

  22. Hot February 23, 2014 5:25 am

    18. Mendoza is also listed at 5’5″. I would bet their listed heights are actually more than their actual heights, instead of the other way around.

  23. lkapulani February 27, 2014 2:02 pm

this should be an exciting season!!!! GO SANDBOWS!
