UH-UCI rewind

didn’t go to the game, finishing Chaminade story

will have to ask my son, the radio guy, about the net on Holt. Sounded like the double contact on was Sedore was legit.

Jeremy Dejno put down 21 kills and Zack La Cavera added 13 kills and six aces as No. 8 UC Irvine held off Hawaii 25-20, 17-25, 25-15, 15-25, 18-16 Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the ninth consecutive win for the Anteaters (13-9, 10-7 MPSF) over the Rainbow Warriors (13-8, 9-7). It was the first time this season that Hawaii, also ranked eighth, dropped a two-match series at home.

The Rainbow Warriors were led by Siki Zarkovic’s 19 kills and 17 from Brook Sedore. Setter Joby Ramos added 45 assists and 11 digs, and libero Kolby Kanetake had 10 digs.

Hawaii led 12-9 in Set 5 but couldn’t close it out. Both teams had two match points, UCI with the first at 14-13. Hawaii with the next two at 15-14 and 16-15.

The Anteaters scored the last three points, getting kills by Dejno and Connor Hughes, and a hitting error by Zarkovic in winning their fourth straight.

The match lasted 2 hours, 24 minutes.

Really tired of them losing to UCI (and BYU, and UCSB) not sure why wade and Co, can’t figure out how to beat those three teams.

No disrespect to the players or coaches, but it sometimes seems like UH doesn’t make the kind of progress that other teams make…UCSB has been getting better & better over recent years & UCI & BYU don’t really seem to have down years…As has been said earlier, it’s really frustrating to see UH lose consistently to these teams…

    1. UCI hasn’t lost to many people in winning two consecutive national titles.
    2. UH already has as many wins than in all of last season.

It’s just frustrating, Last year UH was middle of the pack and they are middle of the pack yet again. It’s very possible UH will only win two more times this year ( against Pacific) because Pepperdine, Stanford and BYU are tough, and better than UCI IMO.

    4. perhaps. but BYU hasn’t always done well here. UH could have beaten the Cougars last year in the playoffs in provo. it went 5 and ended on a controversial call that probably should have gone UH’s way.

I think it’s so frustrating because UH has the talent and capabilities to beat all the teams they lost too. But poor play by some, and poor coaching at times just gets them. Hopefully they can win all these coming up games

Tonight was a very even match in my opinion. Both teams had their runs as each set wasn’t close (except for the last one). I was still pretty impressed by how both teams played tonight.

Irvine played well tonight. UH played streaky. It was the Warrior’s inconsistency that cost them the match. Letting an overpass fall, two players colliding going after the same ball multiple times, being out of rotation, etc. Maybe they were trying too hard. Wade doesn’t seem to have any answers. Hawaii was completely out coached this weekend.

Also do they practice with Komisarek in as libero? The serve receive and defense looks a lot more sloppy when he’s in.

They need to win the next 4 road games. Pacific shouldn’t put up much resistance but Stanford is dangerous team.

Cindy, I know you weren’t there. But I thought I saw Hartong with some kind of brace on her arm or shoulder. Did she have some kind of medical procedure?

  10. Cindy Luis March 10, 2014 2:34 pm

    9. she had shoulder surgery. don’t have any other info at this time.

    10. Thanks Cindy. I guess she isn’t with the National Training Team (at this moment. I’d guess finishing school as well.)

Wish her a speedy recovery. Her shoulder had taken quite a beating the past two years.
