UH press conference 12-6

UH should have video up of it later.

Shoji said he expected a competitive match and that ISU is a good team, fights hard.

Longo said she felt the team had learned from its mistakes during that stretch with the three losses and it made them better.

I asked Hartong if there was more pressure being at home this week. She said it was a huge advantage to be home. They want to be playing six more matches.

Asked if they felt the win at UCSB was a turning point. They said they felt that being able to win in 5 when not playing well gave them confidence.

Asked Shoji about the difference Mendoza has made, part of his mid-season adjustments. He said she had exceeded expectations, wasn’t the quickest player out there but continues to make the plays.

He was on game tracker on his phone and at the end when CSUN had taken the lead in Set 5 said Come one Northridge.

Sarah’s contribution to stabalizing the backrow and tough serving was one key. Winning (even ugly) is winning. When the chips are down you got to be able to find a way. Weaknesses and strengths will ebb and flow depending on rotational matchups, but the better teams will have players who can elevate their game to compensate for the matchups and beat the weaknesses. I believe that in their late run of matches, the Wahine were able to find the ‘other’ gear and put away the challenges that were being exploited in midseason. Go Wahine!

I wonder if that reporter twice asked about whether UH is at a disadvantage against other teams getting revved up in the post-season atmosphere because Coach and Emily looked like they had just lost in the first round.

I like Ali’s attitude, and I’m going to miss what seems to be an important contribution to the team.
