Thanks to UH SID John Barry for the photo.

Hawaii’s No. 1 duo of Brittany Tiegs and Nikki Taylor lost in the quarterfinals of Sunday’s AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships pairs tournament, falling to Grand Canyon’s Shannon Dugan-Kenzie Phelps, 21-12, 21-16 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

All pairs that reach the quarterfinals earn All-America honors. Tiegs becomes just the second player in the sport’s history to be named All-America three times, doing so at Florida State in 2012 and, after sitting out a transfer year, as a junior at Hawaii last season.

It is the second honor in as many seasons for Taylor, a sophomore.

The SandBows pair, seeded sixth, opened play with a first-round victory over 11th-seeded Tyler Jackson and Anete Brinke of Long Beach State, 21-16, 15-21, 17-15. Taylor had 18 kills and Tiegs finished with a double-double (15 kills-10 digs) when hitting .536.

The quarterfinal was the third time that UH-1 played GCU-1 this season. Tiegs-Taylor topped Dugan-Phelps in the USAV Collegiate Challenge in Chula Vista, Calif., and the Lopes’ pair defeated Tiegs and Sammie Brown during a dual at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. Taylor had 15 kills and Tiegs 10 digs in the final match of her career.

    Hey Cindy,
Is the playoff match against Penn State on Tuesday at 5 pm local time or HST?

  2. islandman May 3, 2015 9:11 am

5 pm HT, per hawaii athletics website, (8 pm PT) .

  3. Cindy Luis May 3, 2015 9:56 am

    1. It’s the second match of the day so time is tentative. Pfeiffer-Loyola open at 3 p.m. HST. First could go quick. Second not scheduled to start before 5 p.m. HST

Time for me to go to Stanford and cheer for the Bows. Should be able to get there in time =)

How is her elbow? Prognosis going forward for the 2015 indoor season regarding the injury?

  6. Cindy Luis May 3, 2015 12:33 pm

    5. obviously she was cleared to play this weekend and did well. We’ll see how it looks when playing indoors in Europe in a few weeks. Won’t be stressing the elbow as much as when playing sand.

  7. Kazu May 3, 2015 12:50 pm

Thought Taylor would be AA in indoor and not out door. Still time though. Congratulations to both of them. Hope a team member would start a blog when they go on their trip to Europe.

    7. This is the second sand AA for Taylor.
I will be with the team in Europe and will have plenty of coverage, print and especially social media.

  9. Kazu May 3, 2015 1:25 pm

8 Thanks Cindy. You’re the best. Its usually quiet this time of year with Wahine volleyball so at least there is something for us to look fwd to.

  10. Cindy Luis May 3, 2015 2:02 pm

Thank the paper. they’re sending me.

  11. Willie May 3, 2015 2:19 pm

Cindy, thanks for the elbow info. Playing via PT treatment and rehab without medication is ideal. Hoping for long term recovery that will last the whole season without recurrence.

  12. Cindy Luis May 3, 2015 2:21 pm

    11. it’s going to be an on-going concern. Spoke with Taylor today. She said she was at 100 percent today and well rested since they didn’t have to play Saturday.
Said she has nothing volleyball related until Europe. We’ll be arriving in Milan two weeks from today.

I don’t like the way they do all american selections in sand volleyball. They should go by the overall season instead of just this tournament. Katie Spieler deserves to be all american.

  14. Cindy Luis May 3, 2015 8:42 pm

Perhaps things will change when the NCAA takes over. But this is how they’ve done it through the AVCA

If you think Spieler deserves you, you also have to include Urban. They won and lost as a team. There were several other excellent duos from around the country who didn’t advance to the quarters or even got a chance to play in the pairs championship, such as Spieler-Urban. Same could be said about them and their overall season.

  15. wildcard May 4, 2015 1:02 am

so sc is the undefeated champion. remind me wasnt it that they have an all year sand team and their sand players are not allowed to play indoor is it? well its all well. makes for better atonement for their lousy indoor team the previous year.

  16. wildcard May 4, 2015 1:02 am

    5. nikki taylors elbow looks fine to me. during the pairs tourney, nikki seemed to have increased her power in her gun (arm swing) specifically.

13 and 14. alas for spieler, guess her opponents found her tandems weakness and its not simply because spieler can just only depend on her mobility. just simply wear down urban then you can wear down spieler, her fuel isnt infinite (so it seems).

  17. wildcard May 4, 2015 1:12 am

oh cindy about that “rant” on title ix. i say somebody needs to sue against it (title ix) for being too weak and devoid of usefulness. as it turns out, its not up to the hype after all. maybe it needs to be applied to athletics as well right? because football is overglamorized despite if the team … and couldnt win for jack or if they depended on it. mens basketball? doesnt seem to make more money than wahine volleyball. what i got was football made the most money #1 followed by wahine volleyball #2 so that would make mens basketball #3 and it may be so now especially and particularly because of last checked arnolds atmosphere of untrustworthiness. and even if they don’t … , their good old days were even outnumbered.

    new link up for Monday.

    17. there is no basis for a lawsuit. It is being applied to athletics.
    It’s about equal opportunity.
it has nothing to do with schedules.
