Hawaii’s No. 1 pair of Brittany Tiegs and Karissa Cook lost to USC’s top pair of Kirby Burnham-Sara Hughes in Sunday’s championship match of the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Pairs Championship at Gulf Shores, Ala.

The third-seeded Tiegs-Cook, named to the 16-member All-American team earlier Sunday, fell 21-15, 21-13 the fourth-seeded Women of Troy tandem to take second. It was the fourth meeting between the two pairs and included a 2-0 sweep by Tiegs-Cook in Friday’s team portion of the event. The two pairs finished 2-2 in head-to-head play this season.

The UH pair won Sunday’s quarterfinal over Pepperdine’s Lara Dykstra-Becca Strehlow 2-1 and then the semifinal match against second-seeded Aurora Davis of Florida State, 23-25, 21-18, 15-12. The SandBows duo opened Sunday’s play with a 2-0 win over 14th-seeded Delainey Aigner-Sweeney and Bojana Todorovic.

Although not the outcome Hawaii fans expected, it was by far the most pleasant news regarding UH athletics during the Spring ’14 season. CONGRATULATIONS to all the members of Sand Volleyball team for reaching the Final Four of the Team Event, & to KARISSA COOK & BRITTANY TIEGS for being the runner-up DOUBLES CHAMPIONS. Also congratulations to KATIE SPIELER, NIKKIE TAYLOR, KARISSA COOK, BRITTANY TIEGS for making the 2014 AVCA Sand All-American Squad. Look forward to seeing most of you next year at the UH on-campus facility.

Gonna miss cook. She was amazing at stanford and she was amazing here. She really played lights out the whole season. Gonna miss ali as well. Wonder who UH number one pair will be next season

Great interviews, thanks for posting them, especially loved Katie and Nikki’s interview. They will be a solid pair for two more seasons( if coaches don’t pair them up with someone else though)

Karissa looked so heartbroken. I wish she had another year of eligibility left. I know she was injured a lot at Stanford but probably not enough to file for medical hardship and get a 6th year.

  6. Brandon May 4, 2014 3:39 pm

    6. That’s possible? I thought the max you could get was a 5th year?

  7. formerlywarriorfan May 4, 2014 3:41 pm

I could definitely see Karissa as a beach volleyball pro, and maybe go for the olympics some day.

Next year’s top pairing will obviously be Brittany Tiegs and whoever is her partner.
Maybe Nikki Taylor or Ginger Long or possibly one of the new recruits like Sammie Brown.

I hope UH announces the sand volleyball recruits soon.

    7. Of course, Jessica Gysin was at USC from 2004 to 2009, 6 seasons .

    9. Wow thanks for the heads up. First I’ve heard of it. Is this only done with extreme injuries and is it hard to obtain?

  10. hossana May 4, 2014 3:54 pm

Once again, I will repeat as I’ve said many times before that Scott Wong et. staff with the players did an amazing job in bringing the SandBows to championship caliber beginning with their first year to this year and I see only good things happening to the SandBows for the coming years such as Shoji did with his team and being consistent in national rankings. Great job and congrats to all involved!!!

    10. a number of players have been granted a sixth season but it is in case of extreme injuries, or a couple times that I know of was due to pregnancy.
Wong said the recruiting is ongoing so he may not be announcing anything official any time soon.
Cook will be finishing her master’s in fall
I did ask about Longo since she has another year of sand eligibility. Wong said at the moment Longo is not returning but ‘you never know.’

    14. This blog is better when you and your hundred other names, don’t post, thanks!

  15. Hot May 7, 2014 5:08 pm

    14. Huh? I don’t understand what you’re saying. And why are you listing these names?!

  16. Maverick May 8, 2014 8:31 am

15, 16 and everyone else. Respectfully, I suggest ignoring the odd posts. Some folks just want to get a rise out of others. Eventually, after the poster fails to elicit any responses, the poster will stop.

    Who’s “with them”?
