As mentioned on previous thread, didn’t get back on after practiced. Wrote and crashed.

Press conferences for each team and open practices later today.

Wonderful article on Casey Castillo. Your ability to humanize and make us care about these kids is amazing .Your travel schedule exhaust me just reading about it. Thanks to you and the very passionate and knowledgeable bloggers this has been the best season ever. A win tomorrow wouldn’t hurt either. PS To Roofer-You don’t look that old, you are sort of a combination Guy Hagi and a younger Dave.

Hope you are enjoying our unusually warm weather! Excited to get to watch the Wahine on Friday, miss watching them at the SSC. If you get a craving for local food, there’s a place called Alohana up north a short bit in Ankeny (off the interstate). It’s okay (but it’s good for Iowa).

  3. ALLdaWAY December 10, 2015 7:47 am

Congratulations Wahine!! Good luck on Friday; PSU’s nightmare!

    Bring home the Regional Championship!

    Aloha

Dave Shoji did a very nice interview this morning on the Bobby Curran Show. He spoke very well of Russ Rose. Said they go back a ways and while not kissing buddies, they share an amicable friendship. Dave spoke very highly of the quality of Big 10 women’s volleyball and said Russ told him people should not overlook Illinois because they’re a very good team. Dave also said the PSU bigs are as good as ever, but a drop-off in setter and maybe libero which may account for their losses. Yup, who can replace former All-American setter and 2014 AVCA National POY, Micha Hancock?

  5. roofer68 December 10, 2015 9:07 am

    1. Ron, ditto on your comments. A win over PSU will be huge for the respect of the Hawaii program. And thanks for the comparisons. The reality is I’m a Sagittarius too, mine coming next week. I’m 4 up on Dave and 1 up on Jim Leahey (if you can believe that!).

  6. heluhelu December 10, 2015 9:44 am

Hope Shoji’s right about setter “drop-off” because State College daily just published feature (carriedby NCAA) on how Weiskircher seems to be stepping up: Setter stepping up as leader for Penn State

Is it Friday yet?? 😉 Worked late last night so my desk will be clear before an important 3:30 meeting tomorrow.

For those of you who have watched Penn State, what one or two matches of this season would you say are best to watch as prep for tomorrow?

Especially given her major and interests after college, it’s great that Magill is blogging for UH athletics. Thanks for all the links.

  8. po'okela December 10, 2015 10:42 am

trying to cross paths with someone I met years ago.

he’s a hard core UH fan and used to work at Martin & McArthur. kind of random but I figured this would probably be the best place to check 🙂

if you’re out there, let me know 🙂

  9. warriorfan December 10, 2015 10:50 am

This might be the last matchup of Shoji and Rose. Really hope Shoji can beat him just once. Tomorrow is the day IMO.

  10. tongo December 10, 2015 10:57 am

#6 Watched PSU 3x on TV in So. CA and watch two of their losses. Their setter has been criticized a lot, but on any given night, anything can happen. Hoping our serving creates that pressure to help give their setter a bad evening.

  11. heluhelu December 10, 2015 12:01 pm

    #9:n

Their setter has been criticized a lot

    Lol. Another similarity with UH.

Meanwhile, I’m more curious about their libero, where another “Kendall” seems to be vying for starter mins. Senior Kendall Pierce reportedly replaced frosh incumbent Keeton Holcomb last weekend. Holcomb won the job in September, so don’t know implications of switch.

  12. 2left December 10, 2015 12:52 pm

About #3’s post. Has Dave always been this blunt when discussing UH’s opponents? I can just see the Penn State setter and the libero seeing the quotes and having career performances. And I remember before the first road trip this season he said we were fortunate that the two teams are “conference bottom-feeders”. Yikes! 🙂

  13. doug December 10, 2015 1:31 pm

    Lets go bows

  14. tongo December 10, 2015 1:32 pm

#11 If you go to the Penn thread, you will see this criticism of the the backcourt and the setting that has been going on all season. Shoji isn’t saying anything that has not been said many many times by their own fans, their own media commentators and even national commentators.

  15. orioles4eva December 10, 2015 2:07 pm

I really like Castillo’s demeanor on the bench, always with a smile. Seems very positive and excited for whoever is in the game.

  16. Malachy Grange December 10, 2015 2:41 pm

I watched all of PS’s losses on You Tube. Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northwestern and Minnesota all had good games against them and Nebraska came back from down 2-0 to win. PS lost a couple of times at home which is very rare. They get shaky when the other team is doing well. They’re vulnerable and if our block and serve are working, I think we’ll have the advantage.

  17. Malachy Grange December 10, 2015 2:42 pm

BTW the Nebraska win was on Oct 2, 2015. Good viewing.

  18. greenthumb December 10, 2015 3:05 pm

    16, thanks for the suggestion.

Cindy, fwiw, your splash page here only shows your posts up to Tuesday, and oddly zero comments on Tuesday.

  19. T103 December 10, 2015 5:06 pm

Ok so I need some help. I went to espn3 and tried to watch replays of the UH games. Followed the steps u guys mentioned. Typed in my sisters login name and her password according to her, and then it asks for cable subscriber, which we have oceanic time warner cable. Doesn’t have specially oceanic time warner cable, just time warner cable, select that and then nothing happens. Anyone know if I’m doing something wrong?

  20. Rick December 10, 2015 5:22 pm

T103, I just tried replaying it and it works for me. I wonder if it’s because you’re trying to log in with your sister’s log in information. Are you doing so on your iPad or computer? If so, it could be that the log in doesn’t match to your sister’s IP Address that is linked to her iPad or computer. Try and launch the WatchESPN on your device and see what happens.

  21. Cindy Luis December 10, 2015 5:33 pm

Thanks for the kind words on Castillo. A very nice young woman.
    1
    7. thank you. hadn’t noticed. we continue to have problems with the new site.

Rose and Shoji were very complimentary today about each other. See Friday’s paper for more.
One funny thing that didn’t get in.
rose said he’ll be coming through Honolulu on way back from Bora Bora. He said he agree to go as a guest speak on some sort of Big Ten cruise in the South Pacific. BUT he didn’t read the part that it was the South Pacific.
When he asked his wife which Florida port they would be leaving out of on the cruise ship she told him that they were going to Tahiti. He thought Bora Bora was in the Caribbean near Cuba.

  22. T103 December 10, 2015 5:41 pm

Thanks rick, I re-tried and I guess I didn’t know my browser was on ‘private’ so that blocked the pop-ups. So I disabled it and am now able to watch the replay against Texas A&M. So stoked to be able to ditch out of work early tomorrow to be home by 230 to see the streaming game! Go BOWS! It IS 230 tomorrow right? Last time I thought they actually played at 4:30 wen it was actually 230…..

  23. 2left December 10, 2015 6:15 pm

#14 – I understand that he is only stating the facts, but I’m old enough to remember before a playoff game when Larry Bird said of Michael Jordan, “one player isn’t going to beat us.” Then MJ went out and dropped 63 on the Celtics. Of course, the Bulls still lost so maybe my point isn’t so strong . . .

  24. Rick December 10, 2015 6:27 pm

T103. Glad to hear you got it to work! I believe tomorrow’s game is at 3:30pm HI
Time, or 30 minutes following the completion of the Minnesota Game which starts at 1:00pm HI Time. Go Wahine!!

  25. bleachercoach December 10, 2015 7:29 pm

Very nice article on Castillo, Cindy. I know she is buying her time with such a great TEAM 1st attitude as well as the rest of the girls. For some reason from the very 1st time I saw her on the court in their preseason practice, she looked very “Special!”. I know the fans in the years to come will see that athleticism that will breakout with the great attitude and wittiness she already possess. Can’t wait for tomorrow and the team to give it their all !!! Let’s Go Hawaii!!

  27. Cindy Luis December 11, 2015 6:24 am

RE: Shoji’s bluntness. Would think that we’d need to hear the whole interview and listen to how things were said. He was critiquing PSU not criticizing. Said if there was a weakness it would be at setter (red-shirt freshman) and young libero. Probably what he has seen from the tapes, including their losses.
