The back-up setter answer: Koelsch

Was at sand practice today. Asked Wong about the back-up setter situation

Kendra Koelsch who had originally signed to play sand will be on an indoor scholarship and walk on for sand. He said that since she hasn’t started at UH yet, that they can make the scholarship switch. She is 6-0 out of Huntington Beach High.

Thanks, Cindy. That answers the questions. Do you know where Goodman is headed?

  2. FormerlyWarriorfan April 28, 2014 8:07 pm

Great news, wonder if Guinasso will go sand only and get Koelsch’s sand scholie.

  3. Hot April 28, 2014 8:13 pm

What position does Guinasso play indoors?

  4. kapakahi April 28, 2014 8:26 pm

Great to get some height at the setting position. I wasn’t to keen on another Goodman & I’ve seen Kyra play juniors for a good couple years.

Does anyone know the status on Kahakai? I know there were some concerns about her being a qualifier, I hope she was able to tie whatever loose ends up.

    1. I feel like Goodman won’t leave, just won’t be on the team. She may not have her sister but she has family on Maui and seemed to enjoy Hawaii. I believe she also had injuries so that may have been a factor to continuing to play.

    2. Last I heard it Guinasso was still going to play indoor and sand. Maybe Koelsch’s scholarship went to Brown from Notre Dame or the girl from Germany or possibly a new recruit.

Extremely happy about the addition of Koelsch to the indoor squad. I believe she is setting now for her Laguna Beach club team. Talented player and glad to have height at the setter position.

I actually really like that this will open up a scholarship for the beach team. They can now add another recruit or maybe bring in another 5th year transfer.
They will be stacked next season. Only lose Karissa Cook, but are gaining a bunch of talent in Koelsch, Gianna Guinasso, Lara Schreiber (unofficial), and Sammie Brown not to mention that Kalei Greeley and Savannah Kahakai have tons of beach potential.

There’s a real possibility their 5th pair next year will be Ginger Long and Ali Longo (who are number 3 this year)

Some Wahine fans love creating a setter controversy every year, just thought I would give you a heads up 🙂

Kendra’s Laguna Beach VBC qualified for the GJNC this past weekend and according to her tweeting activities it sounds like her and Greeley are heading to Hawai`i for second session of summer school right after.

Emily Maglio looked good in the BC Canadian Provisional Championship which was steamed live. She was named MVP and her team is headed to the Canadian Nationals.

Guinasso’s T-Street club also qualified for the GJNC along with Greeley’s Rancho Valley team and Imi Ike 18 . Doesn’t look like Huff’s team is going unless they get an at large bid.

2014 will be interesting with so many new faces.

    8. Yes, it opens up a sand scholarship because Koelsch will no longer have hers on the sand team.
But Wong is moving towards more sand-specific players so I don’t know how many indoor will cross over next season. They would be playing a second collegiate sport and that is very demanding, physically and in terms of school time.
UH will add a sixth scholarship as allowed by the sand rules next season. The sand scholarships can be divided up among players, unlike indoor.

    1. i don’t know where goodman is headed nor if she will continue to play. she has had injuries in the past so she may decide to retire.

    8. Do you feel maglio has starting potential? Or will Adolpho and Magill be the starters?

  15. tileaf April 29, 2014 12:08 pm

Let’s keep in mind that height is not the only factor of a volleyball player. Today, setters need big verticals to compete against opponents left-side attackers. If a setter can block/ get a touch on attacks, it will certainly change a team’s strategy and limit opposing teams offensive attacks. Otherwise, players like Bailey (from Texas) will just spike over setters/ players that don’t exhibit big verticals.

The bigger picture is that with a big vertical can certainly accel a players game. Hopefully incoming crop of recruits will work to train for higher verticals. Hartong-Willougby-Kaufman have had success in their style of play with their vertical traits.

Haven’t seen Maglio play. I would think that Adolpho and Magill have the advantage of collegiate experience.

#8 — Ali Longo is a Senior. This is most likely her last Sand season.

  18. formerlywarriorfan April 29, 2014 1:30 pm

I thought there was a possibility Longo would be back as a grad student, sand roster lists her as a junior.
If Longo does leave , a pairing of Long/Riggs might be really good.

  19. Cindy Luis April 29, 2014 2:11 pm

    17. Longo is a sophomore for sand purposes. She could return for 2 more years.

  20. Cindy Luis April 29, 2014 2:21 pm

    2. if Guinasso gets a sand scholarship, she can’t play indoors.
    9. I haven’t seen anyone trying to create a setter controversy. here. Can’t speak about other sites.

  21. Cubicle1126 April 29, 2014 3:53 pm

wouldn’t longo’s eligibility clock run out next year (in her 5th year)? so she couple possibly play one more year of sand volleyball next year.

unless she redshirted a year while at psu, then this past year would be her 5th and final year.

i don’t think it matters a whole lot what ‘class year’ is listed for a player on the rosters. what really matters is how many years they’ve actually played, and when their eligibility clock started.

  22. Cindy Luis April 29, 2014 4:06 pm

it’s a different sport (indoor vs. sand). but my bad in that she has 5 to play 4. She has one more year to play sand.

  23. Hot April 29, 2014 8:47 pm

Longo can return next year. She will be a senior. This season she is a redshirt junior now, since her first year was considered a redshirt season in sand volleyball (she played four straight years indoors).

  24. Cindy Luis April 30, 2014 6:29 am

    23. Yep, said that in 22.
She has one year of eligibility left. Sand roster lists her as a sophomore.

  25. mauna April 30, 2014 4:47 pm

Alyssa Longo says she is not returning in 2015 according to Kaleo.

  26. formerlywarriorfan April 30, 2014 9:21 pm

.25 that’s too bad, Longo is really good and fun to watch on the beach.
