Coach Shoji,
Me and my whole family will be praying for your full recovery.
God will get you through this
Best wishes Coach and God Bless!
The treatment of prostrate cancer has come a long way. I am living proof. (ten years after the surgery). Dave needs to talk to survivors. I think that he should retire and “smell the roses.” They have excellent Doctors on Oahu and his age is a plus at this point. Stress is a big factor and having a loving family is very important in recovery. Hang in there Dave , your tougher than a little cancer cell!
Shoji was very positive when we spoke. He is not ready to retire. And has spoken to others in his situation.
This is what UH sent out
University of Hawai’i head women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji will take leave from the team due to prostate cancer. Associate head coach Jeff Hall will oversee the program in Shoji’s absence as he undergoes treatment.
“I was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few weeks ago but I did not want to announce it and become a distraction to the team.” Shoji said. “I will be undergoing treatment that will take me away from my everyday coaching duties for the next several weeks. With the help of my team of doctors, my wife Mary, and the support of our family, I am trusting in God to get through this and see what my future holds.”
“First and foremost, Dave and his family are in our prayers,” said UH Athletics Director David Matlin. “When Dave and I met last week, I understood the depth of how much he cares for the program and his student-athletes. He is an amazing coach and ambassador for the state of Hawai’i, the University of Hawai’i, and the sport of volleyball. We will continue to support him each and every step of the way.”
“Coach Shoji is a true treasure for UH and for Hawai’i,” said David Lassner, UH President and UH Manoa Interim Chancellor. “We are saddened at the news of this challenge to his health, and our immediate priority is to support Dave and his family as they identify the best path forward.”
Shoji recently completed his 42nd season at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program. He guided the ‘Bows to their fourth Big West Conference title in five years and their 24th-straight and 35th overall NCAA Tournament appearance. In the final week of the regular season, Shoji became just the second NCAA Division I head volleyball coach to reach the 1,200-victory milestone, joining Penn State’s Russ Rose. Currently, Shoji has a career record of 1,202-204-1.
I agree that coach is a treasure. My best wishes to him and his ohana.
Best wish for full recover & can’t wait to see you coaching again
3. I agree with you. Good that you spoke out as a cancer survivor.
Get well Dave!
You have the support of all of Hawaii nei!
Best wishes and prayers to Dave and his family. Looking forward to seeing him back with the team fully recovered and ready to take on new challenges!
Coach: You are in for the fight of your life–a fight that you will WIN! I’m sure that it’s no exaggeration to say that the entire volleyball community & all the people of Hawaii are behind you 1000%!
all the best to coach and his family …. take care, and we’re all rooting for a full recovery!!
Re: the Final Four…I think it would be great if Stanford won it…and I think they can…
RE: Shoji
– Wish Coach the best.
It is a relatively common affliction with older men; generally not immediately fatal. About 50% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer have low risk disease that does not require immediate or aggressive treatment.
Survival rates for prostate cancer (taken from cancer.org website)
According to the most recent data, when including all stages of prostate cancer:
The 5-year relative survival rate is almost 100%
The 10-year relative survival rate is 98%
The 15-year relative survival rate is 95%

RE: Final Four
– Nebraska’s coach is better, although Texas has elite athletes.
– Minnesota’s speed tough to contain, Stanford’s MBs are tall, not necessarily fast.
Nebraska’s demolition of Washington brought high – ball setting teams back to reality. Unless the talent is equal (all 6 starters) the result will rarely be in doubt. Minnesota proved that their speed is tough to stop, and they touch a lot of balls with their block.
There are still some high-ball proponents (i.e. Coach) but many have or will soon retire.
Am truly sadden to hear about it. Thank you Ron for sharing your own life experience. Dave is much beloved – almost as much as the wahines. Just kidding! I am expecting this tough old goat of a coach to beat it and continue on. God bless.
As said before, all of Hawaii-nei is with you and your family in thoughts and prayers. Good luck and God speed for your recovery. I’m glad you’re not ready to retire. You have a final four to win yet. ;o)
Thank you Cindy for the wonderful job you’ve done this year and for all the valuable sharing and putting up with us heathens. Much Mahalos!
Also to Ron for sharing. Thank you for your words of inspiration.
16. thank you for the kind words. you all make the blog what it is.
ditto on thanking Ron.

May God Bless and Keep You Safe. Healing Prayers to Coach Shoji.
Praying for a speedy and 100 percent recovery for coach Shoji.
It really feels like their has been a black cloud on the wahine program all season long, hope that goes away soon, we need some good news.
So sad to hear about Dave, but if there is one single soul who can beat this become better for it, it’s Dave. He is one strong and competitive son of a gun. He ain’t going to let cancer true him away from his grandkids or going to tokyo in 2020.
Glad to hear he’s not retiring, I’m not sure if that is the best decision based on this new announcement, but not for me to say. I know he’s a fighter, but he will need all the rest and stress free life for the next year or two. As much as I don’t want to see him retire, I want him to enjoy his family and retirement. He deserves it.
As for the final four: anyone but Nebraska is who I am rooting for. I would love to see Stanford win it first, then Texas. Then Minnesota. Stanford could possibly win the next four if they win this year. They are doing this without Hodson, who was their projected all American who took a leave this year. This current team is full of freshman and sophomores as main starters.
Coach, hope you have a successful and speedy recovery. We know that the team is in good hands so you don’t have to worry about that side of your recovery.
All of Hawai’i pray for you and your family for a successful and speedy recovery.
Any news on Lindsey Berg?
Dave
Prayers for you and family. I had lung cancer at 69 and prostate cancer at 73. I had surgery and the docs took out both infected organa. I am 86 today and still enjoying what I normally do.. You being more athletic will sure win this fight.
today. Also had lung cancer at 69
Prayers and best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery Coach Dave!!
Prayers and thoughts for Coach Shoji & family. God speed!
praying for Coach’s quick recovery and healing!
also Agree and hope that Stanford wins it all… they’re young but pretty awesome athletes and the trophy needs to come back to the west siiiide!
First, adding my healing wishes to the outpouring from all over.
I also commend the coach on the incredibly classy way in which he held back the news until there had been some distance between the end of the season and his announcement. That could not have been easy. But then again a good coach is a good teacher, and in this as in other things, he is teaching his (current yes, and former, too) players by example.
23. no.
Sincere prayers go out to Coach Shoji.
For coach, God’s healing touch for a 100% recovery. “God can do all things which strengthens me.”
As far as the Final Four, I would love to see Stanford (Pac12) win it. But IMO the match up will be Nebraska vs. Minnesota
in the Final with Minnesota winning the National Championship! I still could imagine Hawaii being in that Final Four mix. It just wasn’t meant to be…”You are still numero UNO in my mind always. Thank you for another wonderful ride Rainbows!
prayers to coach dave shoji. godspeed on his full recovery. may good fortune favor him plenty.
also mahalo to all who bravely survived and told their tale.
prayers to coach dave shoji. godspeed on his full recovery. may good fortune favor him plenty.
also mahalo to all who fought bravely and survived and told their tale.
NOT TO BE NEGATIVE, BUT I AM POSITIVE THAT RUSS ROSE WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN 1200 WINS IF PSU DID NOT GET “PREFERENTIAL” TREATMENT FROM THE NCAA DURING THE POST-SEASON NCAA TOURNAMENT ALL THESE YEARS.
…INCLUDING THE REGIONALS, TOO.
