Updated: SandBows on Sunday

Hawaii finishes up the home season Sunday with duals against HPU, San Jose State and Grand Canyon. OC Sports televising the final two matches. UH-2 in the 7 p.m. match and UH-1 in the 8 p.m.

With Taylor out (elbow) likely Brown stays with Tiegs. Not sure if they’ll keep Chow with Rooks at 3.

The discussion on Taylor was caught in the middle of Saturday’s thread on BYU. Some may have missed it. She tweaked that problem elbow during indoor practice then a little more in sand last week. Supposed to see the doctor Monday.

UH also got a sand commit for 2016-17 from La Costa Canyon junior Sydney Kidd, very accomplished beach player although 5-5. She said she aspires to be just like Spieler.

This is dreadful news. I think Nikki should take a year off to allow her elbow to fully heal, otherwise she might risk even further, more damaging injury to her elbow.

  2. islandman April 19, 2015 8:24 am

Hartley had arm discomfort, Leung injured his back during warmups, per SA article today.

Maybe Nikki should not have played sand vb this season.

  3. Cindy Luis April 19, 2015 11:54 am

1-2. Taylor’s injury happened during indoor practice. The original injury happened during indoor open gym.
Don’t know how dreadful it is. We’ll see what happens at the doctor Monday.

Spieler and Urban are gonna be moved back to #2?

  5. Cindy Luis April 19, 2015 12:16 pm

    4. Not sure. will know more when I get to the courts.

  6. Warriorfan April 19, 2015 12:41 pm

Some players are just injury prone, nothing you can do about it, just bad luck.

  7. islandman April 19, 2015 12:59 pm

There are overuse injuries. Someone like Nikki takes many swings during an indoor season. Hartong had to have surgery at the end of her senior season, i think.

finally stopped drizzling long enough to pull out the laptop.

spoke with Taylor. she said she’s fine. will see the doctor Monday but she said she’ll be back Wednesday.

as for the earlier question, Spieler-Urban at No. 2. they destroyed GCU 2 earlier and will be on the 7 p.m match on OCSports vs. SJSU-2

    UH 1 Tiegs-Brown vs. GCU 1 on TV at 8 p.m.

  10. Brandon Yoshikawa April 19, 2015 7:16 pm

Just realized this is the SJSU team who’s coaches CLEANED house and brought an entire new team for their indoor and they did AWFUL. Like AWFUL. Don’t like those coaches. Any coach who cleans house like that is a horrible person.

  11. Brandon April 19, 2015 8:09 pm

Brown and tiegs are REALLY struggling

  12. warriorfan April 19, 2015 9:24 pm

they are a new team, and Phelps and Dugan are no slouches, they gave Tiegs/Cook battles last year and this year have gone the distance against most of the top teams.

Looks like Nikki’s injury isn’t serious, so Tiegs/Taylor should be back together, and Brown will be back with Rooks.

  13. Cindy Luis April 19, 2015 10:19 pm

    11. they never even practiced together before playing yesterday. Got better Sunday the more they played together. Brown said after that with a little more time, they would have been better. They both had to make adjustments, especially when both had to block more than they were used to. and they were switching sides of the court to cover. All things considered they did well.

    12. You don’t know that for sure. Taylor still needs to see the doctor Monday and they’ll determine what happens after that. She’ll still need to be cleared by the trainer.

if you read what I wrote at 8, she said she’d be back Wednesday. Hall wasn’t so sure. There’s no need to use her this weekend. He said her elbow has some inflamation. She had it well taped today when watching matches.

  14. Cindy Luis April 19, 2015 10:22 pm

    In the two TV matches
Olivia Urban and Katie Spieler topped the SJSU pair of Jamie Hirai and Allison Morgan 21-7, 21-15. Spieler had 24 kills and 15 digs.
Brittany Tiegs and Sammie Brown lost to Grand Canyon’s Shannon Dugan and MacKenzie Phelps 21-19, 21-18.
last match played in some nasty conditions with mini sand storms, rain and strong gusts of wind.

  15. islandman April 19, 2015 10:31 pm

Roster says Boyan is a senior ? How come she wasn’t in the senior ceremony ?

  16. warriorfan April 19, 2015 10:53 pm

    15. Boyan will be playing next year as a grad student.

  17. Cindy Luis April 19, 2015 11:01 pm

    15. unlike Brown, who graduated after four years at Notre Dame and only had one year left of eligibility, Boyan graduated in 3 1/2 years from Western Kentucky. She had the spring of her senior year to play another sport, which she is doing, and she has a year left to play sand next season at UH.
She will do it as a grad student. As Katie Spieler will be next year. Speiler is graduating in three years. She and Brown will be roommates next year. Brown is completing a two-year masters program.

  18. islandman April 20, 2015 7:00 am

16 & 17; thanks for explaining. So is Brown completing a two yr masters program in 1 year ?
Looks like Spieler is a good student to graduate in 3 yrs. The roster noted she is a niece of Lisa Strand-Ma’a. Lisa said Brown’s parents watch all her games in person, i think.

  19. Cindy Luis April 20, 2015 8:19 am

    18. No, Brown doing a 2-year masters in 2 years.
She will be rooming with Spieler next year when Spieler will be playing as a grad student.

have mentioned Spieler’s connection to Stand-Ma’a several times over the past few years. And That Spieler’s father and Brown’s father were roommates in college. Spieler’s mom roomed with Lisa’s twin Kelly at Cal Poly. The families are very close.

Don’t know if the Browns have come to all the sand matches. Spieler’s grandparents have been here for most matches. They are Lisa’s parents.
