Recapping Shoji on the radio

Feel free to add if I missed stuff.

Coach was on for about an hour, some of which there also was a reporter on Major League baseball, which played into Shoji’s love of the Dodgers.
He discussed the players being in summer school that started Monday and open gym starting, which coaches are not allowed to attend.

Said that two players are not back, only one he mentioned was Mitchem, who is still finishing her degree at Irvine Valley. Caller asked where Mitchem would play, Shoji said it all depended on what was best for the team, that she could play RS, MB, LS and, of course, would have to earn a spot.

Caller asked about Manu-Olevao and playing on Sundays. Shoji said he had not that the conversation yet but expected to maybe later this week.

Said the Europe trip was a great team bonding experience and he saw team growth from that. Talked about leadership roles. Captains will be decided later.

Caller asked about backup libero to Kahakai. He said Anderson and Ponce.

Question from Pacheco on programs that were a surprise that UH could schedule. He said that getting Florida here was a bit of a surprise since Wise contacted them. UF’s gym was being renovated and were looking for places to play.

NMSU SID asked about having the Aggies out again. Shoji said the invitation was open to Jordan but the issue is the home-and-home, which UH doesn’t want because it costs them SSC revenue.

Pacheco asked about playing UH Hilo. Shoji said that DI has to get an exemption to play a DII program. And that they might consider a spring match with UH Hilo.
Said they were going to do a fundraiser on the big island for sand volleyball and tennis, think next month?

It was mentioned that his contract was through 2017. Said that he signed but didn’t mean he would stay through 17. said the Olympics were looming which could play a decision in it.
(MY NOTE: volleyball in the Olympics is Aug. 7-21 which means it is during Wahine 2-a-days)

Said it’s hard to follow his sons during play, got to see them in LA, and that his wife was going to Japan to watch them play later this summer.

Caller asked about stipends for athletes. Shoji said that UH will not be paying them this year but would eventually have to in order to keep up.

Think that’s about it. Again, feel free to add stuff that was missed.

    Thanks for the info!

No can pass up attending the Olympics, especially if your progeny is in them.

  2. connor July 8, 2015 9:56 am

who is the other player who is not yet back? any problems arising from her or mitchem not being back for summer school?

  3. Cindy Luis July 8, 2015 9:58 am

As mentioned, the Olympics doesn’t conflict with the Wahine season. just the first weeks of practice.

One other thing he was asked: What sport would he want to coach if it wasn’t volleyball. Shoji said probably baseball but he coached basketball at Kalani and Punahou. Said he’s told the UH golf coach that when he retires he wouldn’t mind coaching golf.

I thought he said fund raiser was going to Maui, wish it was coming Big Island.
I was surprise when he mentioned that the Gators ask to come out here. That’s going to be a real treat for the fans and the Gators.
If Olevao decide she won’t play on Sundays that means she will miss six matches.

  5. Don July 8, 2015 11:09 am

Not only will Tai miss 6 matches, one of them would be the official Senior Night…

Regarding Mitchem, just for clarity: Is the plan for her to finish up her degree at Irvine Valley this summer and then join the Wahine by the time the upcoming season begins? (Understanding of course that things don’t always work out as planned.) If so, around when would she join the team?

  7. Ki July 8, 2015 12:40 pm

Mitchem will join the team after she receives her Associates Degree this from Irvine College.

Maybe Guinasso is not coming back. If Anderson and Ponce were mentioned as backups to Kahakai then it logical to think the Guinasso is the odd man out. No use for her to remain on the team if she is not going to get playing time. She was practically the last person off the bench last season and saw almost no PT. Anderson and Kahakai were only a freshman(same as Guinasso) so she is in a battle just to get off the bench.

I say let Shoji follow his sons next year and let Robin and Jeff run the two a days. I think Shoji earned his “time off” and I also have confident that Jeff and Robin will do a good job. Maybe even his volunteer assistant(whomever he/she is) can pick up the workload.

I don’t think it unworkable. Just conduct practice as if the coach is going thru illness and the program must move on. No need to hold Dave hostage. Let him follow his boys to Rio and he can still communicate or organize practice from afar. Modern technology allows for that nowadays.

    8. I don’t think baby G is coming back too. Like you said she hardly played last year, she may concentrate only on beach. Is Longo still around? If she is wonder if she will be helping out again this year.
Shoji must be so proud of his boys.

Still finishing her degree at Irvine during a summer session, Mitchem is playing it close. Kind of disappointing that Mitchem’s fate might still be in the hands of UH’s super efficient admissions office. Hopefully I’m wrong and it’s a done deal.

  12. H-man July 8, 2015 3:42 pm

What is happening with Olivia? Very little mention of her on the European trip (and no pictures) and no mention of her this morning. There’s been mention of Emily Magio who is showing improvement. Maybe pushing Olivia for playing time.
And then there’s Mitchem in the middle which is getting crowded. This pushes Megan to the outside and I think she’s okay with that. All very interesting.

  13. vballfreak808 July 8, 2015 5:16 pm

Kirsten Sibley commits to the indoor team. A 6’2″ outside hitter from NorCal for 2016.

  14. Cindy Luis July 8, 2015 6:10 pm

    4. sorry, my bad. fundraiser on Maui.
as mentioned, Florida’s gym being redone so they’re going on the road in the preseason.

    5. Hi Don, yes, have mentioned several times if Manu-Olevao doesn’t play on Sundays, she’d miss playing on senior night. She does have a redshirt year.

    6. as stated above, Mitchem is finishing her degree at IVC. There shouldn’t be a problem with her being here.

Think the other player not here is Burns.

    9. that would be the scenario

    11. has nothing to do with UH. Mitchem needs her AA in order to qualify to play at the DI level.

    12. mentioned Magill plenty of times during the Euro trip, including the opposing coaches talking about her and Maglio.

    be back later.

    10. Longo is gone as of this week. She’s going to play in Switzerland.

  15. warriorfan July 8, 2015 6:11 pm

From watching videos online Sibley has a very heavy arm but needs to work on her vertical.

  16. warriorfan July 8, 2015 6:12 pm

I think Burns is on campus according to her social media, Maybe the other player is Castillo?

  17. Cindy Luis July 8, 2015 9:09 pm

Probably Guinasso who was at Huntington Beach tourney last weekend and finished third with Hi’ilawe Huddleston, earned AA rating
Spieler was third with Torrey Van Winden, earned AAA rating.

  19. Brandon July 9, 2015 8:04 am

Nice to see another player complement Iosia in the 2016 class.

We all know Iosia will be ranked pretty high by prep, but I wonder where this girl will be ranked

  20. Brandon July 9, 2015 8:04 am

Pretty sure the other player is castillo, and thats only because of nationals.

  21. Cindy Luis July 9, 2015 10:24 am

    13. thanks. have been waiting for her club coach to get back to me.

    20. Nope, it’s Guinasso. Nationals are done and Shoji did mention that he liked the commitment from his freshmen who didn’t have much of a summer and came from nationals to summer school.
