On vacation

Heading to mainland to see my mom for her birthday. Not sure when I’ll be back on.

Will leave this thread open for now. Please play nice. Probably be back on Sunday

Happy birthday to your mom and you have a great time.

  2. Volleyman August 1, 2015 5:23 pm

The pictures are up on the roster. They all look so ready. Their hair is tied up and they look ready to become #1

  3. soljah August 1, 2015 6:35 pm

Loving the new wahine unis! A nod to the Men’s new white uniforms they unveiled midseason! Loving the tapa print!

Happy Birthday To Mom! Many More!

Cindy, when the opportunity arises, ask about the Tai and Sunday issue. 6 matches are quite a bit, unlike last year’s 2.

  5. Ki August 1, 2015 9:13 pm

Excited about the upcoming season. Hawai’i, Long Beach, & Santa Barbara looks to having a promising season with the players they have this season.

  6. haleiwacrossfitter August 1, 2015 11:49 pm

UCSB looks solid. 3 outstanding OHs and an international libero. Their middles and setter are decent as well. They should be second in the conference and make the tourney based on their schedule and the amount of wins they will obtain if they can gel and click together. I feel Hawaii will still sweep the series, but they will be our biggest challenge this year. I’m not sure what happened to Spindt and why she is not playing this year, but if she was….I may actually think the edge might go to UCSB.

  7. Cindy Luis August 2, 2015 8:52 am

    4. Tai has not made a decision yet. Been asking for a few weeks. Shoji said there will be a release on it probably during camp.
She is wrestling with it. Ether way, sadly, she will get grief.

    6. we’ll see about UCSB. Spindt was injured and wondering if she hasn’t retired.
The Beach brought in some good talent but do believe Hawaii will be the class of the league.

  8. Hot August 2, 2015 9:46 am

Sorry if I have to bring this up from the previous thread but that thread has already been closed.

Cindy, I’m not sure where you disagreed with me on “several fronts.” I said Mitchem (of course if she gets cleared) and Granato will surely play, and you basically said the same thing.

I said nothing about any of the other back row players replacing Kahakai. All I said was that I wanted to see more of Guinasso. And that was comparing to the time she saw last year, which was minimal. She was the last person off the bench.

It is my opinion that Higgins is mediocre. Or at least she was mediocre last year. She had a hard time connecting with the middles. Even those high percentage matches that Magill had, several of those kills were from awkward sets (too low, etc.). All the OHs hit for a pitiful percentage.

  9. Kazu August 2, 2015 3:44 pm

8 more days till start of practice. Hope the Wahine are ready to go. Freshmen’s will have first taste of D1 volleyball. Waiting for one more to show up on the roster.

  10. vballfreak808 August 2, 2015 4:31 pm

    Enjoy your trip Cindy!

Is there a schedule out for the televised matches? Will any home matches not be televised?

  11. Cindy Luis August 3, 2015 4:03 am

    8. sorry but still disagree with you on a couple of issues, one being Higgins. . But I was surprised that Guinasso wasn’t used more last year, too.

I didn’t say ‘basically the same thing’ about Granato. Only that Shoji said that she was the best all-around skill-wise of the three freshmen. Unless they redshirt someone, all the freshmen will get in at some point.

The connection with Magill isn’t solely on Higgins. Now that the two have had a year together, I think it will be better. At least it seemed better when in Europe.

And I think everyone will agree the passing wasn’t great last season.

    10. don’t know about TV.

  12. Ron August 3, 2015 7:57 am

Higgins has continued to improve each year. Having so many weapons to go to will be her biggest challenge. She has great coaching and she will be fine. I hope Tai plays full time but if she opts to continue not playing on Sun. we have the depth to handle that. I hope all the games are televised because I now live on Maui and its a long swim to the Stan without the ferry!

  13. Hot August 3, 2015 10:20 am

    11. Huh? What did I say about Granato that you disagreed with? You had previously stated that one freshman could redshirt. All I said that Granato and Mitchem were going to play. Basically what I was saying that two of the four newcomers were likely to play, whether as starter or off-the-bench reserve. Didn’t say that the other two weren’t going to play, either.

I don’t get the tone. Well, whatever. It’s your blog. Sorry for posting.

  14. sharene August 3, 2015 12:15 pm

Hot: I didn’t detect any tone in Cindy’s post. She seemed just as confused as you.

    Re: Tai
I guess I am just as conflicted as she is. This is her senior year and to be out for 6 games would be difficult. This seems unfair to her given she had to burn her redshirt early. I do feel that VB is a commitment but I also respect her faith. She should talk to Kalei and Taylor Higgins (were they the other 2 Mormons last year?) and to see how they were able to reconcile the conflict. It would be nice if the church could give her their blessings.

  15. Ashley August 3, 2015 1:05 pm

    the 2015 Roster is out?

can someone tell me where i can find it.

also as for Tai, boy i feel bad that she is put in a position such as this. 6 games is a lot, especially now that she is a senior. i don’t know, i respect her and whatever her decision is. i hope her church does give her their blessings to do what she feels is right for her. but whatever it may be, i want it to be Tai’s choice and no one else

  16. Haushinka August 3, 2015 11:39 pm

Tai M.O. should not be a starter if she is projected to miss 20-25% of the matches. Only fair to give playing time to a player that is able to give 100% commitment. This could help with cohesion and chemistry.

  17. Ki August 4, 2015 6:08 am

    16. True. Cohesion only comes with a lot of playing time BUT if Tai earns a starting role (Dave said starters have to earn their spot), then she should start regardless. Besides, if she takes off on Sundays, it will only develop that person taking her place at OH and give her playing-time experience should we need a sub because a player is injured or playing poorly.

  18. Ron August 4, 2015 6:43 am

Totally agree with Ki, the Tai issue will work itself out. Message to Hot: I think you are very knowledgeable about volleyball and hope you continue to contribute. I have not read anything that Cindy has written that you should be offended about. This is a give and take forum and everybody will not agree on different issues over the season. The differences of opinions is the reason I read this blog every day.

  19. jimmy the lock August 4, 2015 7:57 am

    Hot, do you know Steve?

  20. Hot August 4, 2015 8:13 am

    18. Thank you, Ron. Yes, I’ve been commenting on this blog since it started. I just felt like Cindy didn’t even read my post. The “disagreed on several fronts” comment felt a little off. She basically just didn’t agree with my comment that Higgins was mediocre. I didn’t see what else she disagreed with.

  21. Hot August 4, 2015 8:15 am

    19. Why? Are you implying that I am Steve? Am I ragging on a particular player? I just said that Higgins was mediocre (IN MY OPINION). Am I threatening Cindy? Thank you for that snide remark.

  22. tongo August 4, 2015 8:45 am

I have read the postings about Mitchem’s provisional acceptance and the need for a final acceptance – but any sighting of Annie on campus? Assuming she earns a starting position, I am excited to see whether she plays OH, MB or switch between the two positions as she did at IVC.

  23. tongo August 4, 2015 9:50 am

#15 Link to 2015 roster – http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?roster=568&path=wvball – or just google UH Wahine volleyball 2014 Roster. On the landing page, there is a box that says “Season:” on upper right portion of the page where you can hit the option icon that will bring up 2015 option. The girls look great!

  24. turfwar August 4, 2015 1:20 pm

    Lol jtl.

  25. jimmy the lock August 4, 2015 3:29 pm

Hot, so defensive. Things that make you go hmmmmm… 😆

  26. warriorfan August 4, 2015 5:05 pm

I didn’t see that much improvement in Higgins last season either ( except in her serving which is very good)
She needs to improve her consistency in setting location this season if UH wants to be a top ten team.Last year at times she would make brilliant sets from a bad pass, then completely butcher a perfect pass or freeball pass. Hope this season she is consistent because she does have talent!

  27. Mark August 4, 2015 5:29 pm

Hi Cindy, is mitchem already in Hawaii? She’s currently not on the roster.
    Thanks!

  28. tongo August 4, 2015 8:33 pm

#26, Didn’t it seem from Cindy’s reporting on the European trip, that a number of the European coaches had good things to say about the setting. As you say, hopefully this is the year that Higgins puts it all together. I think she will – in spades! Robin will not let her fail and Taylor has too much pride. She is a competitor.

  29. Cindy Luis August 5, 2015 4:41 am

apologize for not getting back sooner. Mom in a care facility and have been spending as much time as possible.

It’s a little stressful so HOT perhaps my tone seemed a little short. sorry.

Thanks for the help in directing to the current roster. Had posted it several threads ago. It is a little confusing because it automatically goes to 204 and you have to go to the drop down menu for years and hit 2015

    27. no idea if she’s there yet. I’m in Washington. She’s supposed to be in camp monday. there was some paper work that needs to get done. Technically, the semester doesn’t start until Aug. 24. first day of class.

as for Steve, Steven, Laura, et al … I don’t believe he is allowed to post any longer on any of our blogs.

    be back later tonight.

  30. Kazu August 5, 2015 4:58 am

27 Haven’t seen anything on Digging Na Wahine blog about Mitchem being here ( He/She would have posted something if she was i’m sure) Had a photo of girls working out though.

Thank you Cindy. I apologize for dragging this on.

Jimmy, I realize I did sound defensive. Sorry. Just wanted to clarify things.

thanks . new thread up about the poll at link above.

    30. Pretty sure DNW photo isn’t from this year’s open gym. Players are usually dressed more casual. This is legit practice attire.
Plus coaches aren’t in the gym during this time period.
