    tickets 6062, turnstile 4427.
crowd pretty decent for a Thursday. Would think there will be more here tomorrow
Not the prettiest of matches. lasted 91 minutes.
One of those WAC teams that have thrown the Wahine defense off with softer shots than they are used to seeing in their own practices. ball comes back slower than where they set up.
Considering how much time it took NMSU to get here and getting in at 430 a.m. thought they played fairly well. UH used 15 of 16 players, only one that didn’t get in was Ponce.
It went so quickly that it is a little hard to analyze. I’m sure that UH will play better against Santa Clara, who were up and down against UCLA. Broncos fairly young Wallace said they could have used Stauber staying (he ‘had her’ for two months before she ended up with the Bruins. said she would have made a difference,

I think Shoji just wants to get the distraction of the ‘record’ out of the way and just play. The fear might be that Hawaii wants it too much for him tomorrow and they lose focus. All they have to do is settle down, pass well and focus on their side of the net. If they do that, they shouldn’t have any problem.
Expect UCLA to sweep NSMU tomorrow. Bruins didn’t look great, certainly not as impressive as they’ve been over the years. Still you know Sealy will have them ready for Hawaii Saturday
don’t have much to say. Heading over to Kailua. Nice that’s not even 10 p.m.

Felt lonely but didn’t realize about NMSU’s travel snafu, guess they might get it why UH would want out of WAC. Wahine were efficient enough and nice to see others step up offensively to aid Em, but she gets most of ‘out of system sets’ as usual which Jordon knew was going to happen. Hope weekend crowds come out to make it a little more celebratory and less cozy. Go Wahine!

It seems that every time Hartong hits on the right it’s always a slide. The right side attack should be varied because teams are always going to expect a slide hit from her. Last year when she was set in that area it was varied. Why the departure?

  5. setaone September 6, 2013 7:49 am

Cindy, Scott Robbs eluded too a fun ceremony once the record is broken. Any chance that Oceanic will carry the ceremony for those that can’t make it to the SSC?

  6. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 8:38 am

    4. That is a question for the TV people.
My guess is since they do a post match show that the ceremony would be part of it.

glad to see Kastl in… really believe she just needs more playing time… i hope Coach gives her just that –

  8. Ron September 6, 2013 12:06 pm

I am surprised that there is not more love for Mendoza. She has been very steady as a DS. Longo is still the leader of the defense as she made some spectacular digs last night. If Kawamura can keep her serve in she is a run maker. It seems that every time that Dave goes with the 6-2 we serve it into the net. I think it will work eventually. There is so much parity in women’s volleyball any of the top 40 teams can knock you off on a given night so we need to be careful tonight.

  9. Aloha73g September 6, 2013 12:15 pm

I’m a huge Mendoza fan already. I think she very quickly established herself as the 1st DS. I was concerned with the loss of Maeda from last year but Mendoza has proven to be a good replacement in the back-row….reliable serving and passing.

  10. roofer68 September 6, 2013 12:27 pm

7.8. Shoji stated that Sarah was the most consistent serve/receiver of the lot, and she’s proven that when she first step on the court against Texas. And don’t know the number of times she has served but I believe one error into the net against the Aggies was her first and only error of the season so far. Her serves barely clears the net with a lot of pace and causes problems.

  11. setaone September 6, 2013 12:34 pm

It appears that Mendoza has become the first DS off the bench. She is showing a ton of potential. I know playing back right and back left is different, but if Kawamura was the top DS (Longo aside), then she would come in for Taylor and spend all three rotations.

    5. Come on Cindy you must have some pull :0)

Nah, but I do hope they show it for the people on the outer islands, watching on the mainland, and those physically not able to attend.

  12. nana kokolele September 6, 2013 1:21 pm

Hoping to see more of Tuaninga. We need more blocks, soft or stuffed or just to present an obstacle in the hitters path.

  13. mei mei September 6, 2013 1:26 pm

LOVE LOVE LOVE Mendoza ~ think she is fantastic. Great move for Coach & Company.

  14. turfwar September 6, 2013 1:43 pm

Yup. Big Mendoza fan from the first match. She plays with a calm confidence like she’s been the defensive specialist for years.

  15. LC September 6, 2013 2:26 pm

Isn’t it about this time of the year when we hear that annual story that someone went into the Wahine locker room and wrote something mean on the chalkboard ?

  16. LC September 6, 2013 2:28 pm

San Diego is beating #11 Iowa State up 2-0 so far.

  17. LC September 6, 2013 2:45 pm

If Dave breaks the record tonight that means photo ops so you can bet that Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano will be in the house.

  18. Cubicle1126 September 6, 2013 3:05 pm

i also have been pleasantly surprised by Mendoza. plays good defense, particularly picking up the tip shots, and is a solid passer. i’d even venture to say, she could be the back up libero. i know kawamura is the #2, but all we’ve really seen of her is coming in as a serving specialist. we haven’t really seen what she’s like as a passer yet.

  19. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 3:05 pm

    14. only if someone creates the annual story. never understood how that happens since the locker room is locked.
    16. yep. enough said.

  20. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 3:09 pm

    10. Our sports department is continually amazed by the number of calls from people who want to know when WE are going to have somdghinb on TV or why WE don’t have something on TV.
Easy answer: WE are not TV. call them.

  21. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 3:15 pm

    9. Mendoza 1 ace, 1 SE in four matches.
If you wanted to see how often she has served, you can go to the individual box for each game and go to the play by play. each box will also show how many service receptions she has made and how many errors (how many times she was aced).

  22. setaone September 6, 2013 3:52 pm

    19. My comment was made in jest….hence the :0)

  32. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 6:16 pm

no, it doesn’t. the SID said he forgot to attach it today.
think it will be fixed by tomorrow -‘)

  33. Hot September 6, 2013 6:40 pm

In the article by Ann Miller, Shoji stated that Mendoza was the “best pure passer” on the team, and it’s evident that what he said was true. The criticism made about her in the article was that she was not always quick enough, perhaps not as quick as Kawamura or Lelepali on defense.

  34. Hot September 6, 2013 6:46 pm

    31. That SID person always seems to be missing something. A couple of seasons ago when the outlook articles came out on the UH website, I asked him if Kam has left the team since there was no mention of her. His response: “Oh she’s still with the team, just an oversight on my part.” IIRC, Kam was not part of the outlook articles in 2011 and 2012. Also, I asked him why the official roster was inconsistent with the position designations, using MB, MH, L, L/DS, and DS. Suffice it to say his response was pretty lame.

  35. Cindy Luis September 6, 2013 11:37 pm

someone asked why Hartong seems to only using the slide when hitting from the right. I haven’t see that. but it could be the way the blocking alignment is now where she’s inside of the setter then moves to the right to hit. instead of a true back set to the right. Will have to watch for that.
