long we need your high velocity swing. gauchos appear to have moderate attack with a moderate fire rate (kps, pct) but light armor and shield defense (bps, dps)
Rest of the lineup remains the same, Higgins, Taylor, Magill, Greeley, Mendoza and Adolpho
You’ll notice that Taylor has removed her brace. playing heavily taped.
Don’t think it’s wise of Higgins to set Long as much as she has so far. She should not be the player with most hitting attempts.
Is Huff going to get in today?
Hawaii playing well in transition. Magill with her second kill. UH up 15-14 at the TTO
4. Long is the L1 today so she will be getting a lot of sets. she’s playing well,
5. no idea
two kills by Taylor on the right and UH up 17-14. TO UCSB
UCSB on a 3-0 run, it’s 20-18. TO UH
long took some shots and looks like she in the fight of her life. ucsb defense is very good. but good thing mendoza is quicker this time and higgins is mobile. i say they the assault gun of magill to smash through diggers
Nikki came to play, set her more please Higgins.
Think it’s time to see more of koelsch.
2 kills by Greeley and it’s 24-20. TO UCSB
ucsb being very dangerous to na wahine
Nikki looks really composed so far, way to go!
10 if you’re paying attention, UCSB has begun stacking the block on Taylor. Higgins going with the 1-on-1 when she can
Greeley angle lands in. UH wins 25-22
Higgins really struggling, and the passing isn’t that bad,
Good thing Greeley finally got it going at the end of the set.
http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=61747
live stats are working if you want to play along at home.
Taylor 6-0-7. UH 1 ace, 2SEs
13. Taylor feels better without the brace, said it was restrictive
Higgins and Shoji have a lot of confidence in Long and Im not sure why, she just isn’t an effective attacker.
nice really ended by Adolpho being solo blocked by Barbeau on the slide. UCSB leads 15-14 at the TTO. Nearly 2 hours in and we’re only midway through set 2
its a game of attrition aint it? fight for the rallies. lets go bows!
Hope Shoji puts in Huff, Maglio and Koelsch, see what they can do.
Huff is in for Greeley
Really take out Greeley, while long is in there hitting negative??
Out comes Long. Taylor H. Looks out of gas. Y is she staying?
Out comes Greeley I meant.
Because you’re not going to put Huff in the back row.
Greeley barely over .000
double sub, Koelsch and Passi. bad set by Koelsch. UCSB up 19-15
I meant Higgins, she looked winded. Give her a break. Let her get her breathe, bring her back in.
Well, that’s why they are the dink queens.
What can they do to stop the dinks?
Magill blocked. it’s 22-17. TO UH
Or shoot set to Passi who was just standing there playing with her pony tail.
Not so much a dink, but it was a high tip. successfully freezes the back row since they can’t tell if the block is going to touch it.
Higgins w a double contact.
come on wahine. plan to counterattack in 3rd stanza
UCSB ties it up 25-19.
Ok that was some ugly volleyball, Uh’s setters just aren’t very good, I like Koelsch’s potential but she’s not there yet. UCSB dink queens beating us with dinks and roll shots all of set 2.
Not sure why Long is out there still.
Watched an awesome soph setter at Wisconsin vs Nebraska. That setter took the lead never let go of the gas peddle and worked the hitters. She knew how to set. Defensively she was digging nails and blocked lights out. She also attacked. And she is a soph.
38, umm yea everyone knows Carlini the best setter in the US.
Yeah does Wisconsin uses our setter is young excuse? Nope.
Either u can or u no can.
38, That was a great match…Wisc could possibly win it all this year…And agree, I was extremely impressed with how Carlini set, especially during broken plays, always giving her hitters something to work with…
Sometimes can sometimes cannot. Just admit it.
wahine may need to prepare for a 5 set. at least this time they won the first (luckily) so they should win for once in 5 if need be.
40. setters like that don’t grow on trees.
Anyway Im frustrated with Higgins development , she is not improving, and I think UH should recruit another setter next year.
Very surprised that Long is starting Set 3. Not sure if she’ll see the front row tho
44. as usual you just like pointing out how good and how much better the best players in the country are or how good Stanford is than UH, why state the obvious??
you’re a broken record.
keep it up wahine! lets go bows!
UH out quickly 5-1. TO UCSB
OK that’s better, UCSB is average UH should win this in four.
a side note including for long while serving. to ensure the ball does not the hit the net, stand far back and do a standing float.
gotta love it. up ref blew the 4 contact call. with the replay the crowd counted the contacts 1-2-3. then booed. it was a bad call but very good crowd participation
Carlini had some bad passes to deal with, but throughout, she was aware of the court, knew where the blockers were and could set on a dime. Foot movement, foot speed, hand position but more importantly, hips square to target.
Can we get an R1 that knows how to count? No way uh had 4 hits…
51, True, but most of the passes were good…
Higgins is not the answer.
another bad call by the up ref, that ball never went over
Omg.
so two free points by the idiot up ref, has the dink queens back in this set.
Higgins sets, are really off today, ore than usual.
Higgins sets to low to mcgill
I wouldn’t put it all on HIggings. Magill also jumps early
Adolpho with the kill, up 17-13. TO UCSB
It’s still way to low
go bows!
Where would Uh be without Nikki today, She’s been awesome. Long still has more attempts than her though.
Great serving run by Taylor. Long ends it. 25-15
the power of nikki taylor. armed with cold steel. taylor made.
good job bows! punch out the gauchos in set 4.
62. said from the start. she is the L1. she is going to get the most sets.
Actually Greeley has more swings 32, Long 28, Taylor 26.
Taylor with 16 kills, season high. That was the first time Taylor had served all match. they switched out the serving subs. Kahakai had been coming in for Taylor.
Taylor with 18 kills, 2 off her career high
nice back row play by Long, with a career high 12
tickets 6229, 4080 turnstile
Taylor with her 19th kill, it’s 11-4 TO UCSB
Mendoza with 22 digs. career high is 24
I’ve been critical of Long cause she’s playing OH1 and hitting negative yet again, but she’s been stellar in the back row digging, best she has looked back there.
Taylor ties her career high with 20. it’s 14-7
and it’s a career high 21. 15-9 UH
Greeley hits wide, it’s now 16-13. TO UH
Higgins should have gone right. It was a trap set waiting to happen.
hawaii wins 25-16. back in a bit
no doubt, Nikki’s best match of the year. She is a Phoenix. Mendoza at her best. Kahakai flashing good hands. wahine hustling…still dont understand the connection betw Magill and Higgins–it is terrible. Great win.
Nikki played great. Mendoza and Long were fantastic at digging and Higgins had 7 blocks. Kahakai had a lot of digs too. A team win . Too bad Maglio and Anderson didn’t play.
I think Long Beach will lose at Northridge, at Davis and here so wahine have to win out!!
That was Mendoza’s hometown team per Cindy and the telecast. Her mom was at the match too.
That official was one of the worst I have seen in awhile. Hope he does not cost the Wahine down the road. Was he working on the last 0 & 2 road trip?
Cindy, appreciated your explanation on dinks. Not that simple when you are on the court as you noted.
Thought the up ref wasn’t at his best, he made a few questionable calls Friday. Kevin Cull sent out by the Big West.
the most interesting call he made was questioning the legality of Taylor’s brace. he did Friday but couldn’t pursue it until Saturday. apparently the call came back from the league that Taylor either had to pad it and not have exposed metal or not wear it at all. She said she found out not long before the match that she couldn’t wear it without making it heavier. so decided to go without it. think she played better as the match wore on and she felt comfortable that she wasn’t going to re-injure it without the brace. Gotta go write. be back later.
Thanks Cindy. I was wondering about the brace.
They may have missed some offense with Tai out but defensively, they look
better (just my opinion). Passing was so much better. like 42, watched the nebraska wisconsin match and was awe struck by Carlini. What a setter. She has her team crank’n in the sweep on nebraska. Hope na wahine get better but right now we’re no way in the same league with the top 15. They have freshmen hitters that really put the ball away.
Kevin Cull should never have made that comment. You’d never here that from a FIBA official…don’t they wear similar braces on their legs that don’t necessarily meet that standard?
90 Islandman: this is Sarah’s mom, I have been at all but 2 matches this year, and only missed 2 last year, such a joy to watch the Wahine and always nice for me to come to my old home, Hawaii. Mahalo for all the support of the fans & boosters, you have all been amazing!
Thank you for the lights-out digs, ladies! Ginger came through when it counted. Nikki, welcome back!
Just returned from the Women’s BB scrimmage. Wow; the returnees really improved. Anyways back to VB; Ginger Long really impressed in the back row and contributed a little bit of offense in the 1st and last sets. She was passing really well and made some impressive digs. Her back row attack was a bit weak though. I cringe every time Greeley goes back to serve; same is true of Higgins. Too many service errors. Although UH won, the match shows the value of Tai Manu-Olevao. She can terminate the ball; tonight only Taylor was able to terminate consistently since the passing was too inconsistent to set the middles a lot. Greeley can terminate too but she made a lots of unforced errors tonight. A win is a win, and from now on we will have everyone on board for the rest of the regular season.
95. It’s within the official’s right to do so. Shoji said it was a matter of interpretation and the league supervisor agreed. I asked why it suddenly became an issue midway through the conference season.
97. I don’t know LB, 8 SEs is not that many. plus 4 aces. a very acceptable ratio.
Greeley had 1 error in 6 serves. , Long 3 errors in 14, Higgins 3 in 16. with Higgins, high risk, high reward.
I see that several bloggers commented on Wisconsin’s historic win over Nebraska and their capable setter, Lauren Carlini. Maybe UH can invite Wisconsin over here next year in one of September’s tournaments. Perhaps Tayler Higgins can learn a thing or two from her counterpart.
87. Shoji was asked about the connection between Higgins and Magill. He agrees that Magill jumps early but that also that his setters have never had to set someone with Magill’s hops. said Arizona had the same problem.
91. Hawaii prepped for UCSB dinks. Per Shoji: They didn’t execute the game plan as well as they should have.
100. don’t know if Shoji can get Wisconsin out.
As for Higgins learning something from someone else’s setter … find that a bit insulting. Higgins is learning from one of the best in Ah Mow-Santos.
Carlini is a different setter, very offensive minded, which is not how UH plays.
think what is more impressive is their libero had 29 digs in a 3-set match.
Definitely Nebraska played very poorly but then we’ve been saying they were over-rated.
100. it was historic since it was the first time since 1978, which was in the AIAW era. They haven’t played every year since then. The losing streak was 17.
Cindy. Re: 97. I was talking of the entire season, not only this match. For example, Greeley has 13 aces and 32 service errors. Higgins has 30 aces and 46 service errors. This contrasts with Tai Manu-Olevao who has 31 aces and 39 service errors. This is an unfair comparison since these two are ALL-TIME bests at the college level but Micha Hancock of Penn State has 82 aces and but 65 service errors. Samantha Bricio of USC has 63 aces and 61 service errors. Admittedly, Hawaii is one of the best serving teams in the nation and Manu-Olevao has been, at least once, third behind Hancock and Bricio in national stats this season. But there are still, too many groans from the crowd when these two serve. I think, a bit too much risk and not enough reward. However, this is a MINOR complaint. After all, I said many times that, for Hawaii, serving and blocking HAS been the strength of Hawaii this season. Last night floor defense became another strength.
I think it was a blessing in disguise having that official give Taylor an ultimatum in regards to the arm brace. Without it, she hit LIGHTS OUT!! Without the heavy brace restricting her mobility, it allows e Nikki to hit a variety of shots that UCSB WAS NOT prepared for.
Talking about Wisconsin. I can still remember when UH lost to them in 2004 regional in 5. Ashley Watanable was out due to broken hand/wrist due to collision with Victoria Prince.
So happy for Long. You can tell that she really wanted to prove herself and to a certain extent, she did. You can tell that she has been working hard waiting for another opportunity to contribute – and she did. Good job Ginger!
107. that match could have gone either way. Hawaii had a swing to end it.
that was a very brutal road trip, they were gone from Nov. 17-Dec. 10. Reno for the WAC tourney, Utah State and Utah, two at CSU before heading up to Green Bay.
Watanabe was injured in practice in Ft. Collins.
107 couldn’t agree w/ you more.. it was like removing training wheels on a bike… now NT is back to Soaring !! yay!
103, Short comment then back on point with this blog. With respect to 100, I think we’re mixing up a micha hancock type with a carlini. hancock is my idea of an ‘offensive’ setter. carlini is a setter in-system or out that can serve up a hittable ball from anywhere on the court. thats her ‘first’ option. plus, she can really block which helps if you are (6-1). she has complete control of her team. Additionally, if anyone watched that match, Nebraska did not play that poorly last week. This is the team that beat Penn State earlier in the season. I would not say they are over-rated, but in on this day, over-matched and the difference was in large part, the setting.
now that this is posting. it was a great game wahine. good job not letting the gaucho thieves conquer your aina again. now time to go on another siege to irvine and fullerton.
people complained and doubted about long until she showed this match that shes a decent defender, almost as much digs as mendoza and kahakai. despite end of match she hit 0% she still had 7 kills and where it counts. you see that high velocity swing of hers? and this time she was more tactical, what she lacked in offense compare to tai she made up for in defense and she shielded na wahine from kill shots digging it up and passing it spectacularly and she scrambled.
also yall miss tai eh? you all before were dissing tai too. and i know some of you still do, hating on both tai and ginger, including about the formers faith.
a note on serving, notice how nikki taylors serve was so effective? she kind of changed her jump float to more of a standing float similar to adolphos the other day but with a little hop on it. and since people complained about service errors, notice how ucsb servers were all the way back? essentially they can hit as hard as they want and as long as they hit it straight, it would go over the net and hardly go out long. wahine float servers should try that at a standing float all the way back instead of jump floating (ie greeley, long, to name a few). speaking of serving i wonder couldnt they use passi as a serving specialist to threaten some opponents with her jump/spin serve like vs davis?
the reasons why wahine won the match (because they were in some real threat of danger):
they won the opening set (which was a sort of luck, had they lost that set, it could of been like last year 5 set and who knows, they have yet to win at 5, let alone come from behind to win at 5)
sarah mendoza was at least 40% faster (i had predicted she only needed to be 20% faster vs ucsb, knowing that she isnt going to be any quicker and she luckily now has kahakai and even long to back her up if need be). good thing because that gaucho libero is hardly slow.
higgins provided armor. though her setting was of lesser quality but she provided 7 blocks (on paper thats more than anybody else). despite her perceived lackluster setting to the middles, magill and adolpho still got plenty kills and blocks. greeley also contributed.
of course, the TIGER of na wahine RISES. broken elbow? what broken elbow? (though i still implore her to use her other arm as necessary) nikki taylor her power was terrifying including at the service line with 3 aces/no service errors. her gun easily tore through the gauchos defense. it was taylor made!
