  1. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:02 pm

Hawaii starting Higgins, Taylor, Manu-Olevao, Magill, Greeley, Mendoza and Adolpho

  2. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:10 pm

Wahine have all kind of problems passing the Titans serving.
    It’s 7-1 CSUF. TO UH
    UH 1-2-6, Titans 4-0-4

  3. wildcard October 3, 2014 7:11 pm

wahine not moving purpose here. shoji even said mendoza is slow. and one of the plays is evident. couldnt she be 30% faster? then she is libero not a ds

  4. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:17 pm

Titans coming back down to earth. UH closes to 11-8. TO Titans.

  5. wildcard October 3, 2014 7:17 pm

dunno why that post twice. if sarah is slow can she serve 22 shots like longo? she serves an ace as if easily

  6. Warriorfan October 3, 2014 7:18 pm

Fullerton is fiesty getting lots of digs, and their OH’s having no problem with Higgins block up front.

  7. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:21 pm

Mendoza on a 8-0 serving run. UH up 15-11. TO CSUF

  8. Warriorfan October 3, 2014 7:22 pm

Titan OH’s having major problems with Taylor and Adolpho block though.

  9. wildcard October 3, 2014 7:22 pm

looks like wahine learned their lesson…hopefully and aint going to let them dump it over. na wahine needs to show their armor is too thick

  10. WaWa October 3, 2014 7:22 pm

Drink-Everytime they refer to Ali Longo’s 21-point run behind the service line.

  11. Z October 3, 2014 7:23 pm

Kind of weird. Wahine started off slow but some how I knew they would catch up.

  12. Z October 3, 2014 7:24 pm

    Huge dig by Taylor.

  13. Warriorfan October 3, 2014 7:30 pm

Good set after horrible start, wanna see Koelsh play front row more.

  14. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:31 pm

Magill with her third kill, ends it at 25-18.
UH doing a nice job on Withers 2-3-10. She came in averaging 3.91 kps

  15. wildcard October 3, 2014 7:31 pm

shoji looking glum that his wahine fell asleep at beginning of the opening set. nice dump shot by kendra

  16. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:38 pm

Two aces by Greeley and it’s 8-3. TO Titans

  17. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:41 pm

    10. Actually Longo served for 20, UH got the sideout to start the 21-point run

  18. warriorfana October 3, 2014 7:41 pm

Higgins has had some fantastic sets this match. Hope she get consistency.

  19. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:46 pm

Titans have closed to 13-10. TO UH. Disagree with the call on Higgins. Thought it was a good save set to Magill. Up official called her for an overreach.

  20. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:53 pm

Taylor with her 3rd kill, makes it 19-16. TO CSUF

  21. wildcard October 3, 2014 7:54 pm

tai showed earlier she has some range.

  22. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 7:59 pm

Hawaii finishes it out 25-19. not the smoothest performance tonight but they don’t give out style points.

  23. wildcard October 3, 2014 8:00 pm

who interrupted tais serve that she was ready in the first place and then cause her to hit net?

  24. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 8:04 pm

added some scores, including UW holding off UCLA 3-2 and SC gets by WSU 3-2

  25. wildcard October 3, 2014 8:06 pm

i wonder if na wahine would like to torment fullerton like longo did?

  26. islandman October 3, 2014 8:10 pm

TV showed Olivia with a slight yawn as they were getting ready for the 3rd set, as the commentators said she may/will be an All – American candidate.

  27. Kazu October 3, 2014 8:11 pm

    Who was Shoji yelling at?

  28. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 8:12 pm

We’ll see Maglio in for Magill in a bit whenever the Titans get out of this bad rotation

  29. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 8:17 pm

Manu-Olevao with an ace, Greeley with a kill. it’s 12-6 TO Titans

  30. Z October 3, 2014 8:20 pm

I think Dave was yelling at Ernie.

  31. warriorfana October 3, 2014 8:23 pm

She may not get it by the Big West, but we ALL know who the best freshmen in the conference is! It wasn’t even close tonight.

  32. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 8:26 pm

Taylor with a kill. UH up 20-13

  33. warriorfan October 3, 2014 8:27 pm

I want Maglio to get set, Wish she was redshirting. seems like she’s wasting a season barely playing.

  34. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 8:32 pm

    They need a third middle.
Ace by Koelsch ends it. 25-15

  35. warriorfan October 3, 2014 8:32 pm

One thing you gotta love about this team is you can clearly see they are improving since the start of the season, unlike last season when they looked remarkably weaker as the season went on.

  36. warriorfan October 3, 2014 8:32 pm

I know, I just would have moved Huff back in the middle and redshirted Emily, IMO.

  37. Z October 3, 2014 8:33 pm

    31. No doubt in my mind.

  38. Kalihifc October 3, 2014 8:35 pm

What did Withers do to Taylor? She seemed to relish celebrating when she blocked her or had a kill off her. Or maybe that’s how she always is?

    #teammaglio

  39. warriorfan October 3, 2014 8:36 pm

Anyway if Kalei keeps hitting over .300 and serving and passing nails, she’s gotta be the big west FOY, doesn’t matter how many kills withers gets, because she gets a ton of errors too.

  40. Z October 3, 2014 8:37 pm

Withers is going to have KaleiA nightmares.

  41. islandman October 3, 2014 8:38 pm

Everyone got to play tonight. Chris and Kanoa said Maglio, Huff and Passi played well in practice.

  42. wildcard October 3, 2014 8:40 pm

was there something about shoji resigning to the fact that his players will be inconsistent? whatever it is, he better have his wahine rest up enough and get consistent enough as well as increase their speed/hustle and always move with purpose tomorrow vs irvine. cant afford being tired in the late match falling asleep not when irvine went toe to toe with csun

  43. Beauston October 3, 2014 8:43 pm

What happened to the other pre/post game show host last season with Lisa and Ryan?

  44. warriorfan October 3, 2014 8:48 pm

    43. Howard?? He’s anchorman on channel 2/3 nine o’clock news now. I actually think Scott Robbs does a better job.

  45. Beauston October 3, 2014 8:58 pm

    44. Thanks. Always wondered what hes up to now since i live in east coast now. Yes, I do like Scott Robbs on the chair as well.

  46. LC October 3, 2014 9:00 pm

I think Withers is a little overrate. She has one gaudy stat kills/set and most of her best nights came against cupcakes in the preseason, her hitting % and the rest of her stats has never been impressive.

Kalei is a 6 rotation player Wither plays 3 . Greeley is a complete all around player who just gets better and better in all facets of the game every time out.

  47. Broseph October 3, 2014 9:12 pm

    40. I agree. I remember the consensus from last year: Nikki Taylor didn’t win FOY because she didn’t start the season as a 6 rotation player like A. Spindt. I am hoping that K. Greeley wins it for her smart hitting, good digging and relentless workhorse attitude as a 6 rotation player from the get-go. Go KG!

  48. wildcard October 3, 2014 9:17 pm

KG to serve as the heavy cavalry of na wahine.

  49. wildcard October 3, 2014 9:28 pm

well on to tomorrow the bows better show that their falling asleep on the opening set and some lesser plays in the second were more so just then a feint, not exposing weaknesses to scouting particularly irvine.

lest i apply this double standard na wahine didnt do any wrong, they were just chillin and anything else is dave shojis fault.

  50. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 9:53 pm

    38. Withers didn’t do anything to Taylor. That’s how she’s been celebrating, with her ‘Let’s Go’ moments.

  51. Pot-of-Gold October 3, 2014 9:55 pm

    36. Warriorfan, I think that the reasoning on keeping Huff out of the middle was due to her foot speed, just too slow for a middle. Hawai’i needs a blocker out of the third middle, someone to help smooth over any potential injury and Huff just isn’t as athletically quick as Maglio.

But like Koelsh and the aforementioned frosh’s, the team becomes stronger with the bench seeing some significant playing time. Lots of smiles after tonights game, the team is starting to understand one anothers tendencies.

  52. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 9:58 pm

Took a little time for Hawaii to adjust to Fullerton’s serving. The Titans lead the conference in aces for a reason. Fullerton had 2 aces in Set 1, 2 the rest of the night.
I didn’t see that they were chillin out there and not sure what you consider Shoji’s fault. They called timeout at 1-7 and obviously refocused well.
But do agree they’ll have to play better against UCI.

  53. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 10:01 pm

    41. Shoji said the ‘B Team’ played well in practice this week and needed to be rewarded. That they are making the first team better

  54. Cindy Luis October 3, 2014 10:05 pm

    51. the main reason for Huff on the OH was to give them another hitter because at the time of the decision, they didn’t know when Taylor would return. Huff had played a little OH at one tournament Shoji saw her at but she has played middle most of her life. She’s also got passing skills and has been working on her 3-meter attack.
Huff may not be as quick as Maglio but she is athletic.

  55. wildcard October 3, 2014 11:00 pm

    52. either na wahine was asleep or they were caught chillin, either way shoji and his wahine cant let that happen again especially tomorrow night.

it was shojis fault as a matter of assignment of blame and he knows. he looked like he didnt want to be seen after the opening set despite his lady bows refocused and still won. additionally there was something about shoji resigned to the fact his players are inconsistent so yeah thats his fault then.

and was that him yelling at ernie which interrupted and accosted tai of her serve when she was ready?

anyways tomorrow it better be still ‘difficult to defeat the bows’

  56. wildcard October 3, 2014 11:34 pm

that fujisitu cool play hopefully makes tai mad (yeah she hit it too late and not hard) and tomorrow she unleashes a fury in her serves.

also you know what would of been funny? since ali longo was mentioned plenty, she should of waved/smiled at the titans from the bench as volunteer assistant coach and that may would of recreated fear in fullerton.

  57. wildcard October 3, 2014 11:37 pm

heres an area of improvement for na wahine, prevent opponent dump shots and at the same time create dump shots to instill panic in the opponent.

  58. oldtimer808 October 4, 2014 5:44 am

#36 That’s why Shoji is the coach and not you. As a coach you have to know the strength and weaknesses of each player. He had a reason for moving Huff to the out side and Cindy #54 gave us that reason. Coach is not down on his team because the inconsistency will improve with time. This is a young team.

  59. Hot October 4, 2014 6:46 am

I hope Huff really improves as an opposite. If that is so, her ability to pass could be utilized. I also hope she continues to get reps as a middle. You never know when they’ll need her. I find Adolpho lacking. She’s powerful, for sure, but she’s so slow. She’s been starting since her freshman season and her hitting percentage should be better now, regardless of who is setting. Good thing her blocking has improved. I’d like to see Maglio get some time. If she has potential, maybe it would be good if she starts getting the experience in conference matches. I’m afraid Adolpho isn’t going to be a threat in the post season.

  60. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 7:07 am

    56. There were so few players from Fullerton on the court that played in that last year. just Painton and Crenshaw. Withers a freshman, Roux a freshman, Olsen a transfer, Buss a freshman, Brown a transfer.
so doubt that anyone really thought about Longo’s run, except their coach. And they certainly can’t hear TV’s references. Neither can I. So what was the Fujitsu cool play?

  61. LC October 4, 2014 7:09 am

Everyone agree that they suffer from Paradise Paralysis before the match and this might be the cause of these slow starts? PP is something that I even notice in my own life,it’s common with islanders.

This team needs just one or two players or a coach who can really get them fired up and work them into a frenzy before they take the floor .

The crowd also needs to join in immediately after Hawai’i Pono’i and make some noise during the intros instead of this polite applause.

The fans tell me that the intro video is a good thing but the music that comes with it this year really needs to be changed.

And someone please tell that announcer that it’s Wahine not Whyhine.

  62. wildcard October 4, 2014 8:51 am

    60. yeah actually its could of not ‘would of’ sorry. their setter who suffered at the hands of longo and was most upset also didnt return it seems, she was a jr and shes not on fullertons roster (so speculate she gave up vb after that play haunted her perhaps?) it might of made the two returnees quiver if that could of had happened though.

the fujitsu cool play was apparently tais second serve when she hesitated and took something off resulting in hitting the ball too late and with no power into the bottom of the net and fullerton celebrated wildly like hopping mad as if they just successfully roofed tai themselves.

  63. wildcard October 4, 2014 8:58 am

is wahine ever curiously pronounced whyhine? if that is a mistake or sometimes pronounced that way for (if not meaningless) emphasis/intensive?

  64. WaWa October 4, 2014 9:52 am

More specifically, the Fujistu cool play was the celebration of the Fullerton player after “icing” out the server (Tai) by stalling the game with tying her shoelace. On TV you could hear Dave complaining about her doing it multiple times. Tai’s missed serve was a little personal victory for her, ever sweetened by Dave’s vocal displeasure. Announcers only told half the story.

I thought it was a very smart move by the opponent to disrupt Tai’s service routine.

  65. seenya citizen October 4, 2014 10:00 am

Last night I paid my money to get in to the quarry parking lot structure and parked on the third floor. After the VB match, I had a $20 parking ticket on my windshield for “no permit displayed”. After parking there for the almost 20 years without a permit displayed, why now, why no warning to the public when you pay? I am hoping you can warn the public in your next column

  66. roofer68 October 4, 2014 10:07 am

    62. She did not give up volleyball. The ex-setter for Fullerton Julie Consani transferred to UCLA and was the setter in their sweep.

  67. Cubicle1126 October 4, 2014 10:38 am

greeley, after starting out slow, really played well. love the play in set 1 when higgins/adolpho completely fooled the csf block, and higgins shot it out to greeley, who absolutely destroyed it straight down with no blockers up. her serve was quite a weapon too. it’s always been a good one, just needs consistency (like all hawaii’s servers).

are we really gonna get on taylor’s case about her celebrations? i, for one, like that fire. her celebration through the net looked pointed, but never malicious. i’m not gonna read too much into it (as others have) other than i’m sure there was some talking through the net. anyone who’s ever played competitive sports can attest to smack talk going on. these are competitive athletes. it happens, folks.

olevao for all her improvement is just not a high percentage hitter. at least not consistently. that’s fine, we’re aware of her strengths as well as weaknesses. i’d take any hitting percentage from her over .200, which despite her inconsistency, i think she’s perfectly capable of.

maybe it’s time to switch taylor and olevao. move taylor to a left side spot, and move olevao to right-side (allow her to be a passing opposite, and then bring in kahakai or another ds when olevao gets in a passing funk). taylor is not getting great looks on the right. higgins still has issues with location to the right pin. and i worry about taylor taking swings at weird angles on poorly located sets, especially with taylor’s still-recovering elbow. use the right side hitter more in-system (and olevao is a lot better in system than on bailout sets).

i would even move greeley to L1, she’s got the skill-set for it. make taylor L2, and olevao the opposite. then let greeley and taylor share the load on the out-of-system sets. olevao is a solid blocker too, so this switch would still be able to take advantage of one of her strengths. and with olevao and higgins playing opposite, it spreads out hawaii’s 2 jump servers in the rotation to keep opposing passers on their toes.

  68. wildcard October 4, 2014 10:47 am

    64. oh so the fujitsu cool play was a smart*** move eh? i say tai could of just served it anyways (ie to cause panic to the opponent and might as well get in a little practice for her real serve). after all ncaa volleyball regulations say the upper official will just have to call in for a re-serve since serve wasnt authorized yet. the server (tai) could even increase her unpredictability. then again the second time when on tv shoji was yelling at ernie about it, tai was about to serve it in anyways so youre right, shoji gave the fullerton player their little personal victory that time was on him.

im sure tai and all servers caught on to such sly move now and can just simply serve it in anyways than pay attention to such ‘false’ delays. interesting to note though that mendoza was probably the biggest serving threat with the runs on her serves and even threating to pull a longo or (semi-longo) even.

    62. it was parentheses (to create) speculation. but yeah i forgot she did transfer and partake in that sweep. im sure she enjoyed her little revenge.

  69. wildcard October 4, 2014 10:49 am

65 not 62. it was parentheses (to create) speculation. but yeah i forgot she did transfer and partake in that sweep. im sure she enjoyed her little revenge.

  70. kimo browner October 4, 2014 11:01 am

back row slow to the ball, setting is luke warm.

  71. R.M October 4, 2014 11:03 am

Nikki Taylor really celebrates all out like that, but I’d like to think that she’s telling Niki Withers that double K nikki is better than Niki haha just for fun

  72. kimo browner October 4, 2014 11:07 am

Kendra has quick hands. her dump-dunk was spontaneous and in a nano-sec. her sets are on the money and safely off the net and give our OHs great height to explode vertically to the ball. Hope to see more of Kendra, baby G, Huff and Maglio. They represent the core of our future.

  73. warriorfan October 4, 2014 11:23 am

Unfortunately not baby G since she might go on a beach volleyball scholarship starting next year.

I just saw LMU lose to another unranked team. Wahine should be moving up in the polls if they win tonight. I noticed Gonzaga has a player that went to high school at Radford, wonder if we will see them on the UH schedule in the next few years.

  74. jc October 4, 2014 11:25 am

#66 Cube, I was just thinking that, moving taylor left. Might be a good thing
rotating her left vs Urvine. Will give CSUN and LBSU some thing else to worry
about next week. Olevao, or Greeley, should be able to handle Allen/Mackie on
the right side. Middle will match up in UH’s favor next week.. Noticed Shoji saving magill for Irvine. Enjoy your posts. Will follow you at volley talk as this
blog is now going negative. Like Seasider, I’m gone.

  75. warriorfan October 4, 2014 11:34 am

^That’s funny, since volley talk is even more negative than this blog.

  76. Broseph October 4, 2014 12:19 pm

    74. I completely disagree. VT at least has knowledgeable people. This blog seems to be for the people who can’t spell, punctuate or put a complete sentence together. Keyboard jockeys who think they know best and have lips that move a thousand miles per minute, yet say nothing of importance. Of course, there are exceptions on each site, and Cindy is a treasure. I applaud her for putting up with the responses on this blog… I’m sure at times it isn’t easy. I’m certainly not going to stop reading or posting on either site, but I see more bad analysis and annoying statements here than on VT. Just my personal point of view.

  77. GINGERs a MUST October 4, 2014 12:20 pm

    66.
All wrong (mostly) but carry on anyway.

  78. Cubicle1126 October 4, 2014 12:33 pm

warriorfan — i would say certain other parts of VT get extremely negative (certain posters in particular). but the hawaii threads (and also the big west thread) are pretty good. posters have been been contributing on those threads without getting nasty.

  79. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 2:58 pm

    65. That Parking stub you purchased should have been displayed on your dash. That is your ‘permit.’
If you kept that stub then you can take it to Campus Parking along with the parking ticket. I’m betting they’ll dismiss it.

  80. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 3:00 pm

    68. The server cannot just serve the ball. The down ref has to signal to the up ref that the teams are ready and then the up ref blows the whistle for serve.

  81. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 3:09 pm

    74. They aren’t saving Magill for UCI. They didn’t pass well enough to run plays to set her.
    75. Shocking but true.
    76. Then you haven’t read the insanity on VT. They have a lot of knowledgeable posters on VT but there are plenty here as well.
I have seen an increased negativity here, some of it after Warrior World debuted. A number of the negative posters have been banned here. Some moseyed over to VT and were also later blocked.
    78. There has been nastiness here, some of which goes into our spam filter. which then gets deleted by admin.

  82. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 3:12 pm

    61. Are you in the arena to hear the crowd? It’s plenty loud. TV lowers the volume on their Mics
    64. Thanks for the explanation. Unaware of what happens on TV unless I come home and watch the replay.

  83. warriorfan October 4, 2014 3:32 pm

Nebraska loses to an average OhioState team a day after beating Penn State.
Talk about a letdown. I didn’t think they were all that great against PSU, PSU was baad and gave it away IMO.

  84. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 3:44 pm

    updated scores on new thread.

  85. seenya citizen October 4, 2014 3:53 pm

Cindy, concerning the parking ticket – my neighbor got one too, and he has a parking pass for the season. Nowhere on the parking pass does it state that you should display it while parking in the structure. What gives? I still think you should mention this in your next column to save the fans a lot of grief in the coming games. I will take it to campus security, Thanks.

  86. Cindy Luis October 4, 2014 4:10 pm

    85. odd. My parking pass says it must be displayed.
I will pass this along to our columnists.

  87. wildcard October 4, 2014 4:39 pm

    80. thats true however if the ball is mistakenly served early before the up ref blows whistle to authorize serve. i happend to read ncaa womens volleyball regs this year that says the up ref simply calls a re-serve.

that would counter the ‘false’ delay in serving

or tai needs to be patient before getting ready her spin for serve

but because of the rule mentioned above if in doubt, serve it, you have 8 seconds from the authorizing of serve (presumely thats the whistle) to smack the ball in the air (and of course get it in and over the net) worst would be you have to re-serve but dont take my word, someone check the ncaa womens volleyball regulations for 2014

  88. LanaiBoy October 4, 2014 4:45 pm

Watching the Long Beach State-Cal State Northridge match on ESPN3. CSUN really looks sluggish both physically and mentally. Big West teams are known for defense and ball control; not CSUN tonight.

    87. Thank you. your rules interpretation is correct.
I was responding to the comment of ‘she should have just served the ball.’
There would have been a replay but why break a rule when it’s not necessary?

heh if i was doing the serve and someone (wrongly) interrupted my serve ie other than to/sub, i would of immediately switched it to an underhand serve and that would be a big surprise to the opponent.
