Minnesota is just out coaching us. They have a diversified offense. Watch how everyone on their offense is moving. Our passing has to be better and the setter has to move her sets around like the last 2 matches.. Penn St and Texas AM gave us good match ups . The ESPN announcers had good things to say about McKenna Granato. They pointed out that she is a freshman with limited experience but yet came in and made an impact. She got six kills, hitting over .300 in the short time she was in the match. I think she also got a service error on the down side .

Greeley tweaked an ankle Wednesday in practice. same one she rolled last year and again this year.Shoji said she gutted it out but wasn’t very mobile tonight so went with Granato.
as for regionals, it will got to the highest remaining seeds after the first round in each region. As I mentioned to Shoji a few weeks ago, he is never going to host a regional agains unless they changed it back to a bid process.
Texas prevails in 5. Really bad call in the middle of Set 5. Florida attack in by at least a foot. would have made it 7-7. instead 8-6. Gators hung in, tying at 15. Texas wins 17-15.

hat kind of adjustments did Hawaii make in the 3rd set to get you guys out of your rhythm?
” Coach McCutcheon:
โThey changed the match ups, flipped their rotation, Nikki Taylor started hitting the ball with a lot more range, was a lot more effective, it took us a lot to have an answer for that. They brought in Granato and she particularly well in serve receive, hitting the ball with good range, there were a lot of adjustments that we had to make, matchups were different, the personnel was different, the distribution was different, they got the quick going early, as you would expect they were fighting for their lives, they changed it up.โ http://hawaiiathletics.com/sports/2015/12/12/WVB_1212155135.aspx?id=595

After watching the other matches only Nebraska looks good too. Texas is Texas but very beatable. USC to me is overrated. Since Hawaii is not in, I pick MINNESOTA as National Champs!
To our girls, you played like warriors or “mighty David’s against the Goliath’s of volleyball. You showed the nation the heart, passion, and love of our island style volleyball. We hope you enjoyed the ride because it was unreal! Beating Texas AM, Penn St., and fighting back but falling short to Minnesota was so valiant and heartwarming. We didn’t beat and or face cupcakes. What a huge choke by #1 seed USC…….receiving serve up 13-to-9 in the deciding 5th set……then giving up 6 straight natural points…..to lose to Kansas.
So much for Bricio being the National POY. Santana definitely carried Gophers over Wahine…..while Kansas served Bricio each time to earn their last 6 decisive points.

What did Goebbels say? “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
Not saying announcers are Nazi liars. Am saying announcers might spend too much time on Volleytalk & robotically repeated “exploiting Higgins height” line so often they overlooked the forest for the trees, i.e., how MIN exploited Wahine 6+ footers — including Koelsch — all night, because MIN/Santana basically made Hawai’i’s block disappear. And in case you missed it, 2 x Koelsch subs in 4th resulted in 2 x MIN points.

PAC 12 losing some ground to Big 12 and SEC, also Big 10. Imo, a shift in college volleyball landscape but Hawaii is in a unique position to capitalize and be competitive. So the Bigs and SEC are big football conferences, which also play into this changing landscape. My two pennies, nothing more.

Sensed that MOMENTUM SHIFT after the intermission, and then thought that MO had carried over to Set 4. But it was not to be. At this point, Hawai’i needed that intimidating “12th Man” (which, btw, is an incontestable trademark of Texas A&M). But with Des Moines just a 3-and-a-half hour drive away from the U of Minn’s campus, the decidedly Big Ten crowd stepped it up BIG TIME in Set 4. Give Daly Santana credit: she will be the National POY now that Samy Bricio is out of the picture — unless the AVCA pulls another co-POY shenanigans.
Was really hoping the Rainbows would reach the Final Four, just to spoil the Big Ten versus Big 12 script. Now the year’s #1 sports story in Hawai’i will not be an uplifting one: Na Wahine becoming once again part of the Final Four national conversation. Instead, the #1 will remain the UH downer of the year: the firing of the UH’s head football coach, Norm Chow.
As I don’t follow Warrior vball, see everyone next Fall. Or perhaps at next year’s Rio Olympics, where the women’s volleyball team could win the GOLD at last. USA! USA! USA!

Mahalo NaWahine for a wonderful season.
Perhaps the one thing I want the coaching staff to take from the match, that elite teams can be led by a freshman setter. Give Iosia an equal chance at earning the starting job.

Concur with everything you said Sickman, I am a big believer in what Iosia can do. No offense to Higgins, she did a good job considering her size limitations. That being said, I think that being on the road for weeks prior to the last match was the main factor in our not making it to the championship . In hind sight, the NCAA screwed us again. There is no place like home to rest and recuperate and our last opponent had that luxury. Next year will be the year of the Wahine!

154. Babers is a redshirt junior. She would have been in the recruiting class with Manu-Olevao, Croson and the scholarship reserved for Passi.
And Forster would have been a fifth-year senior.

Mahalo Wahines. I appreciated the way you played in post season. You went all out and gave everything you had. FANTASTIC EFFORT !!! WOW!!!!

113. the NCAA has limits on scholarships, 12 for WVB, 4.5 for MVB.
LETS GO BOWS
Minnesota with 3 blocks and an 8-3 lead. TO UH
They have a really quick offense.
Wahine struggling passing and receiving. Lets go Wahine!!!
2 aces by Taylor and UH has closed to 8-7. TO Gophers.
Minnesota on a 5-0 run. it’s 14-8. TO UH
Ugh! Minnesota has a HUGE block and a fast offense…. Yikes. We bed to steady our passing and calm down and play! Let’s go bows!!!
Dinks are killing us.
Blocks need to get up quicker.
Need to pass better and get our middles chances to swing going forward.
Minnesota is proving their #2 ranking. Didn’t see much weakness in set 1
Wow. The Wahine got steamrolled. Seems they were steadying out 1/2 way through but were too far behind to catch up.
We are hustling out there. Minnesota is fast, quick, and powerful….and smart tipping…we still can do it!!!
Gophers win 25-18
Need our set 2 magic to kick in
Higgens 5’7″ Daly 6’1″ not hard to understand why we are losing
We knew it was going to be a tough matchup.
12. setter height has nothing to do with it. where were you yesterday when higgins was against a 6-0 setter from PSU
Wahine look like the tcu match just not enough emotion, and hitting into the block instead tooling it.
The problem is Daly Santana.
Ok stitch this together bows!
That and very quick attack. Shoji said he was concerned about UM’s slide.
Jesus, they’re fast (Minnesota). I knew pro teams were a lot faster than collegiate, I guess this goes to them playing in a better conference??
19, she is something
well i guess the bottom line is, we all have been saying that no matter what the outcome…win or lose that we were proud of what these girls accomplished. it really is not easy to watch but win or lose i am proud of the fact that they proved a point in this tournament.
Minnesota up 18-9. TO UH. last point on a block of Taylor.
Wahine need to regroup. They are pressing. Minnesota is good but not this good. lesser teamsvhave given them problems , the wahine can still come back and win this.
Santana is a smart player. Except for 2 service errors, don’t see her doing anything else wrong
Auwe, Wahine cannot play at the Gopher’s fast-paced game.
22. no it has to do with the former Olympic coach getting the athletes he wants to run his offense.UM playing great defense.
Isn’t the arena announcer required to be “team neutral”? Daly World?
Unreal some of you that come in the blog with your know it all negative attitude. Our wahines have come this far and trying their best. Win or lose great season.
Minnesota has lost 4 matches this year, all on the road three in 5. 2 losses to open the season.
wahine making just too many errors, while Minnesota is not, hope this changes after the break, and tables get turned.
30. he’s been pretty funny for both teams.
It’s a gopher block party
29.
Plus helps they have BIG10 money and can offer the facilities and cost of attendance plus the stipend
Minnesota is just playing outstanding.
Minnesota wins 25-13. First time they’ve dropped a Set 2 all season.
Agree they are making a lot of unforced errors. and Gophers making the off plays.
#36 stop looking for reasons why the team is struggling and be happy we are in the final 8
Yes Credit to Minnesota they are playing error free and putting up a big block, but the wahine just aren’t playing the way they have the past two matches. Not giving up though , this can stilll be the biggest comeback of the year.
Cmon Bows use this time to regroup and figure out how to channel the heights you had yesterday into a solid unit when you go back on the court.
Again, isn’t the arena annoucer violating NCAA rules by editorializing with his comments?
Minnesota with an 11-2 edge in blocks. Santana 12-3-21. H. Tapp 7-0-8. 27 digs to Hawaii’s 17.
Taylor 8-6-23.
Minnesota is just out coaching us. They have a diversified offense. Watch how everyone on their offense is moving. Our passing has to be better and the setter has to move her sets around like the last 2 matches.. Penn St and Texas AM gave us good match ups . TCU is a quicker type and gives Hawaii match up problems and Minnesota is 10 times better than TCU. Hey we could win in 5. Have FAITH?
Emotional letdown after winning so easily against PSU?
Granato in for Greeley. looks like they flooded the lineup to get a better matchup. Taylor first server instead of Higgins.
Hope Greeley is ok. We are going to need her steadiness soon.
don’t think it’s an emotional letdown. Minnesota is just that good.
Why not 6’3″ Castillo over 5’10” Granato
Feed the middles as much as possible.
Let’s Go Bows! If we’re going down, go down fighting. Leave it all on floor.
I disagree Minnesota is not that good, Hawaii should be able to take a set and be competitive,
Greeley still bothered by a couple of nagging things like an ankle.
Hawaii playing smart ๐
Granato because she’s a left-side hitter Castillo’s been praticing at right and middle.
52. you are entitled to your opinion of course.
They won the Big Ten.
Refs really letting things go.
UH up 15-14 at the TTO
Minn. good or not, Hawai’i will not go quietly into the night.
Good job wahine go down fighting nothing to lose, win this third set and put the pressure on the gophers.
# 44, you have faith. I am sure Hawaii is trying to correct things. Sometimes it not that easy.
Need momentum shift. Not only is MN playing well, tips, touches, blocks, all going their way. Kinda like yesterday’s match where everything was going UH’s way.
UH up 20-18, TO Gophers.
60…yes what is not possible with man is possible with GOD….AMEN
Wahine are gutting this out. Very proud of them.
Oh ye of little faith! Hawaii is not playing very bad…it is they are playing a darn good team. If they can sneak this 3rd set…you can never tell
Minnesota has tied it at 20. Yes, everything is going UM’s way. Magill had a wide open look at over pass and hit it just long. TO UH
Taylor with her 17th. it’s 24-23. TO Gophers
Taylor with her 19th. UH wins 26-24.
Nikki will lead the way to a final four.
yes! come on wahine valor up more and take it to 5!
Wahine showing their grit. Nikki carrying the team.
Creadimiah, Nikki and Na Wahine!
Finally! Big money, Olympic coach, & pick of any player they want couldn’t stop Hawai’i from gutting it out and avoiding a sweep.
First set that Gophers have dropped in the NCAA tournament
Go team!!
My heart is thumping lol
tweaked the lineup a bit. Kakakai opens at serve.
are we heating up
UH up 5-1. TO Gophers.
5-1! Na Wahine starting to take charge.
Kahakai is doing digging duty
Love this never give up attitude Wahine!!! Roll on Wahine!!!
Cmon ladies! One set at a time
We getting more touches on our blocks. Got to keep it up.
Funny. we had gopher fans at the hotel this morning talking about at what point tonight would mcCutcheon get a yellow.
Is OMG just tired? Doesn’t seem like she is moving very well.
been an interesting called match. Minnesota has closed to 19-18. TO UH.
Minnesota up 22-20. TO UH. not a good rotation for UH when Santana moves front left. think Shoji waited too long to call the time out. IMHO should have been at 21-20.
Come on, Wahine . . . Hawaii 5-0 vs. Fargo. Make my cable sports package finally be worth it.
Minnesota wins 25-21.
. . .
Mahalo Wahines for an exciting season. Go get um next season.
Glad they came back and made it a match.
Thank you, Wahine. You never gave up.
I’ll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places . . .
Merry Christmas, e’rybody. See you next Wahine volleyball season . . . thanks Cindy! Best to you and Tiff!
We shall return with a deeper resolve GO WAHINES
Mahalo, Na Wahine!
Mahalo, Na Wahine ‘ohana!
Damn I was wrong. I really thought going to Nikki so much was not a good idea, the sets were way off. At least they didn’t get ambushed like set 2 and went out fighting.
I would have inserted Koelsch to slow down the outsides from the gophers a bit but hindsight is 20 20.
Minnesota freshman setter was spot on today. Gave her hitters good swings all game. Santana is a beast.
Great effort in sets 3 and 4 for the Wahine. Nikki turned it around but was vulnerable le when we couldn’t set our middles in set 4. Good season Wahine!!
At least UH played better toward the end of the match instead of giving up and getting swept. A great elite 8 team. Looking forward to next year. Thanks to Cindy and the other posters on Volleyshots. See everyone next year!
A lot to look forward to for next season. Olivia will be tough to replace but I have faith in Annie Mitchem. now need Kalei to get healthy and hope an outside steps it up.
Had to leave and do something and the Wahine were leading. Come back and it’s over. ๐
i am so so proud of this Wahine Team. they did what many thought they couldn’t do. they played their hearts out tonight and didn’t let themselves get swept by Minnesota. much love to our two awesome seniors Olivia & Tai, you guys will surely be missed next season. although i am sad and utterly crushed that the season has ended, Hawaii proved that they were indeed contenders. elite 8 is not a bad thing, i am proud of where they finished and hope others will be too. i would have called a time out at 21-20, but that’s just me. lol. bottom line is, these girls should be proud of themselves, they represented Hawaii well & we are all so happy that you guys made a statement throughout the tournament. i can’t wait for next season already, it should be so exciting. anyways, it’s been fun Hawaii fam, till next season…ALOHA!
Well, one hell of a showing, and hopefully showed up the foolishness of not seeding the Bows. No shame in being beaten by a good team. And at least Shoji got his win over Russ Rose.
Just hurts that UH let set 4 get away. they led it all the way to the 20s.
Again think Gopher outsides were just going up and over Higgins too easy.
and Olivia didn’t have as good a match as yesterday.
Great season for the team. Much better than expected. It sure would have been nice to get to Omaha next week though and gain final four experience. UH will have it all next year, talented upperclassmen and very good freshmen and a very deep team. Next year is the wahine’s year!!
congrats, What a wonderful season.
Ashley December 12, 2015 at 3:48 pm
Ditto. Wahine looked a little tired but caught 2nd wind in 3rd. And could’ve easily taken 4th were it not for late Gopher run. Had it gone to 5th, ALL in on Wahine. But Santana was just a magician today, literally making Wahine block disappear. We’re from Hawai’i and no one could be prouder, and if you don’t believe us, we’ll yell a lil louder.
FB Podt: Ugh! 1-3 Wahine vs Minnesota. The “Elite 8” and sweeping the 2-time National Champions before falling in a battle against the Gophers is nothing to be ashamed of. Come back to Hawai’i nei with your heads held high ladies. You did Hawai’i—and more importantly—you—proud. You never gave up. Joan Dantzig and I are proud to be Wahine fans. See you at the SSC next ear (11th season).
alas at least wahine fought hard and went down attacking rather than getting swept. even there is still a gun that can go even against the strongest armored team (#1 blocking team) in the nation.
wahine ends as an elite 8, good job ladies and cant wait for next season.
GO BOWS!
say what happened to kalei? she got hurt or something? liked that shoji brought in a fearless mckenna to stem the tide in set 3 and even 4 but alas nikki and omg were visably depleted.
I wonder what the schedule is looking like for next season. Next years schedule is crucial since top four seeds will be hosting regionals. UH will have top 4 talent but will the rpi be high enough?? Would love UH to host a regional. Hopefully the big west steps it up as well.
The ESPN announcers had good things to say about McKenna Granato. They pointed out that she is a freshman with limited experience but yet came in and made an impact. She got six kills, hitting over .300 in the short time she was in the match. I think she also got a service error on the down side .
Thanks to the coaches, Cindy, Tiff, O.C.16, the announcers, the contributors to this blog and especially the team members for a wonderful, exciting year. Next year we will be even better! Now on to sand volleyball and the men. I am sure Charlie is looking forward to our help and guidance. (not) Anyway I loved the range of bloggers from the analytical to the emotional both rational and unrational.
Congrats again to Na Wahine for a memorable season.
As a fan, I feel honored to have been on this season’s journey with you.
Mahalo for sharing your journey with us.
You have represented yourselves, your team, your school, and our state with honor, passion, grit, and class.
This experience will be very valuable for next season’s returning team members.
There is no substitute for the experience of having been this far and KNOWING that you can compete at this level.
A special Mahalo to TMO and OMG as you conclude your indoor UH careers.
May the lessons you’ve learned from your time as a Wahine serve you well as you move on to the next stages of your lives.
As always, Go Wahine!
Think Minnesota will dominate whoever wins Texas-Florida…Neither team looks that impressive…
Mahalo, Na Wahine, Coach Shoji and staff for an unforgettable and exciting season…it was a great ride while it lasted but unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.
To TMO and OMG, good luck in your future endeavors, you will indeed be missed by the Wahine Nation.
Thanks for the memories and until next year, Aloha and Happy Trails to You.
That missed out ball against the Wahine late in the 4th set made the difference……but not as bad as the blatant missed call against the Gators that cost them the deciding 5th set against Texas.
sorry was writing.
Kansas wins set 1 over USC 25-18
Wow USC looks horrible and Kansas looks just okay. I hate to say it but now I wish we got put in the San Diego region, Minnesota is just on a roll.
hat kind of adjustments did Hawaii make in the 3rd set to get you guys out of your rhythm?
” Coach McCutcheon:
โThey changed the match ups, flipped their rotation, Nikki Taylor started hitting the ball with a lot more range, was a lot more effective, it took us a lot to have an answer for that. They brought in Granato and she particularly well in serve receive, hitting the ball with good range, there were a lot of adjustments that we had to make, matchups were different, the personnel was different, the distribution was different, they got the quick going early, as you would expect they were fighting for their lives, they changed it up.โ

What a wonderful ride…You did the State of Hawaii and the underrated BIG West Conference PROUD!! Minnesota played a great game and in my opinion you both deserve to be in the Final 4
We took on and best the SEC Champs and National Champs of last 100 years , and fell short to the Champs of the BIG 10.. That alone shows the accomplishment of this beautiful team. Thank you TMO and OMG for your leadership and contribution the past years May God be with you both always. Now….we look to next fall for a BIG YEAR from our returnees and newcomers. We all can’t wait!
KU up 2-0 over SC…
121. KU up 2-0. As I just told Shoji. You could have beaten SC.
USC looks horrible worst than UH did in the first two sets, because at least then you could say Minnesota was playing nearly flawlessly, but Kansas is not.
Re: schedule. Shoji said it’s all handshakes right now, nothing signed.
will have 3 Pac-12 teams in, one in each of the first three weekends.
We know UCLA. Don’t think it’s Stanford since when i mentioned them to him a few weeks ago, he said he hadn’t talked to Dunning in a while.
Said there will be teams from big conferences and should be a very competitive schedule, good for the RPI. But, as he said, he thought this year would be better for the RPI. Iowa really hurt them. (2 wins in Big Ten).
Wonderful fight Ladies! For this particular match, the players match up did favor Minnesota but you showed true grit and found a way to win set 3 and almost fought through in set 4! Your play represented the finest traditions of wahines volleyball. You had a great conference season, and the best post season of any wahine team since 2009. You exceeded all our expectations! You are among the best 8 teams in the country. We are all so proud of you!
Thank you seniors – Olivia and Tai. You are woven into wahine volleyball legacy. We are wishing you the very best.
Looking forward to a great beach volleyball season and an even stronger and more experience wahines volleyball team next fall.
re.127 thanks for the tidbits on the schedule, hope its UCLA, UW and USC, Arizona would also be okay.
I am already excited for next year.I see all the returning players all improving even more and three talented freshmen joining them.
IMO UH would have served USC off the court, Ford and Bricio have passing issues. oh well.
Congratulations Wahine, you gals almost got to the final four. Was exciting watching you gals play this past season.
It did look like Magill was not 100% and overall the Wahine looked a little tired. Not making excuses for them. Minnesota was a better team today.
Anyone noticed that when Kendra came in the front row they made several dink hits which worked for Minnesota. Must of been their game plan.
Is Higgins really 5’7″? Did look like Minnesota was exploiting that height difference.
Wahines proved this week that that are legit. Hope this run helps them and the big west get some respect.
Much Mahalos to Cindy and the excellent analysis from everyone here. This blog has really added another dimension to appreciating the Bows other than just watching them on TV.
The Bows have a lot to be proud of. Even with the loss, the country saw that we have a team that needs to be reckoned with. We will sorely miss OMG and TMO but their competitive spirit has been engrained in the returning Bows and will surely help for next year.
Congratulations Bows for getting to the Elite 8. You have represented Hawaii well and we are so very proud of you all and the staff. Come on home for some much deserved rest.
KU wins in 5…Outscored SC 6-0 to win 15-13…Great upset!
134. thats embarrassing. sc was beaten by a weakling. oh well stanford was also made a weakling early in the second round at home so whatever.
rooting on the final contenders to be the huskers and the horns, huskers likely with the advantage in the balance.
So much also for the Pac-12 Conference. No reps in this year’s Final Four. Big-12 against the Big-10 in each of the semis.
After watching all of the matches today I would rate the Wahine as the third best team in the Country.
What a great season for the Rainbow Wahine. Just a few points short of taking it to a fifth set and maybe the final four.
131 Not an Expert December 12, 2015 at 8:17 pm
Was hoping USC would win it but boy they really did let that one get away.
Wahine are now probably gonna finished ranked 6th behind the final four teams and USC, should be 5th though.
Our RPI will be improved next year. So things should work out well if we keep on winning like we did this year.
Florida looked better than USC. Gators almost beat Texas on the Longhorn’s home court, while USC lost in Southern California. Kansas would’ve swept USC in 3 if not for unforced errors.
137…I agree with you…they look like the 3rd best team in the country after Minnesota or Nebraska.
We certainly showed the nation that we are feisty and scappy athletes. After the postseason we truly have established ourselves as legitimate program to contend with in 2016
Cannot believe there are no Pac12 representative.
Would it have been something for the unseeded team from the BW to have made it….
Loss was no surprise and the Wahines can be proud of their accomplishments this year.
How about inviting Minnesota to play in one of our tournaments next year? At least they won’t have Daly Santana any more as she is graduating. It would help our RPI. Might they be interested?
Thank you Wahine for a great season.
Just an obscure question out of the blue. Dave Shoji said that he should have recruited Babers (TAMU). Would anyone have an inkling as to who would have NOT been recruited if Dave really did get Babers to join the Wahine?
USA! USA! USA!
GO BOWS!
Wahine played great. Some of the things we thought would happen did happen going against great teams. Still wondering how bad Kalei was hurt. We could have used her blocking …. but all in all making the final 8 was great!
Well what can I say, regardless if we got screwed by NCAA or not, or no respect, etc, etc, I’m really stoked for how this season went. Went far beyond what was expected, although we didn’t get to the final four, many times throughout the season we just pulled through, worked hard, and gritted it out. Elite 8 is something to be super proud of IMO. Best wishes to Tai & OMG, gonna miss that middle attacks. With loosing only 2 seniors to graduation, next year is looking expectedly AWESOME and with the incoming new players, even more so! Can’t wait for men’s season! Go Bows! And here’s JUST a thought, why don’t we scrap the football team program and just stick w volleyball, the program that actually makes money for the department, and then we can have an ENTIRE team, mens and women’s on scholarship lol!
148. They only recruited Taylor, Higgins, and Kyra Goodman.
WOW!!!!
113. the NCAA has limits on scholarships, 12 for WVB, 4.5 for MVB.

new thread up for Sunday
