  1. H-Man October 3, 2015 11:51 am

    G0oooo…. Wahine !!!

  2. tongo October 3, 2015 12:34 pm

With Higgins out, a poster on VT says that the backup setter to Koelsch now falls on the libero Kahakai. And since rules prohibit a libero from switching position once she starts the set as a libero, it is likely that Savanah will not be playing libero tonite – and will likely be switching to DS so as to be able to switch to setter if needed. This will result in Anderson starting as libero for the match.

It sound plausible – anyone knows?

  3. H-Man October 3, 2015 1:25 pm

tongo, sounds very plausible to me. I always thought Kahakai could be a setter.

  4. Big Island VB fan October 3, 2015 1:28 pm

Anderson played the role of libero in the last set (or sets) at Fullerton. So why wouldn’t it be plausible today as well?

Meanwhile Cal Poly won the first set against CSUN.

  5. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:02 pm

    Yay it started

  6. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:03 pm

Wow they are saying Tai is the consistency that UH needs

  7. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:05 pm

I do hope that she becomes even more consistent and proves ESPN right

  8. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:06 pm

Who is Lamar Patterson, saying that is the starting setter

  9. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:15 pm

uh with some early miscues but still up by five

  10. jmy October 3, 2015 3:17 pm

Ohio State up 9-4 against the Huskers in the 5th set…

  11. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:17 pm

Have not seen Kahakai take reps at setter Doesn’t mean she couldn’t.
Kahakai cannot change her position if she starts at libero in that particular set. She could change the next set.

    UH up 13-7

  12. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:21 pm

UCR on a 5-2 run. close to 15-12. TO UH

  13. Beauston October 3, 2015 3:22 pm

This is the worst I’ve seen Kendra set a game

  14. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:24 pm

Nikki takes care of that overpass

  15. jmy October 3, 2015 3:28 pm

    Ohio State win it…

  16. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:29 pm

    Granato in

  17. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:30 pm

Looks like another knee injury does she have a history of knee problems?

  18. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:32 pm

Greeley injury likely an ankle, which she rolled last year before the UW match.
    Wahine win 25-17

  19. greenthumb October 3, 2015 3:33 pm

Noticed Tai blotting her face and answering a teammate question by pointing to her face back on the court. Commentator mentioned she was hit in face in earlier broken play, anyone see that?

  20. tongo October 3, 2015 3:33 pm

Shaky start for Koelsch – still not steady through set 1. Kalei appears to have twist knee. This may be a very bad weekend for the team in regards to injuries.

  21. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:34 pm

Kalei looked like she was grabbing her knee was it the ankle?

  22. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:34 pm

in case you missed the livestats thread posted earlier, link above

  23. tongo October 3, 2015 3:35 pm

#19 Yeah Kalei and Tai ran into each other in backcourt chasing a ball that Kalei got over – and it appeared that Tai got hit in the face by Kale in the process.

  24. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:35 pm

srroy, didn’t see the injury. just assumed it was an ankle which she usually hapes heavily.

  25. greenthumb October 3, 2015 3:38 pm

23, thanks! just saw the two of them close together, couldn’t make out the details (little tablet screen)

  26. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:38 pm

Cal Poly sweeps CSUN, first Big West loss by the Matadors

    UH up 13-7, TO UCR

  29. Warriorfan October 3, 2015 3:49 pm

Just rest Kalei, we need her against Long Beach, Granato can fill in till then.

  30. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 3:51 pm

Although we Are up is it just me or are we outta sync? Good news is Kalei jogging now though they said back of knee injury

  31. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:51 pm

UCR closes to 14-11, TO UH

  32. Bleachercoach October 3, 2015 3:53 pm

Why not Castillo? Little more height especially with Koelsch set

  33. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:54 pm

Radio said ankle injury. guess we’ll see after the match

  34. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 3:55 pm

    32. because Castillo has been training more on the right. Plus if she is replacing Greeley, that means she’s in the passing rotation. Castillo hasn’t been passing when she’s played.

  35. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:00 pm

    UH wins 25-15

  36. Warriorfan October 3, 2015 4:01 pm

UH just never plays well against Riverside for some reason, have even dropped sets to them in the past, just win set 3 and come home and get healthy.

  37. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 4:02 pm

Dave confirmed Kalei tweaked her knee

  38. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 4:03 pm

Also confirmed will rest Kalei rest of match and let McKenna do the rest to prep for next week

  39. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:05 pm

    36. they’ve lost two starters, setter in her first career start, and still are up 25-17, 25-15. Not sure what your point is with this particular match

  40. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:06 pm

Hope the middles get more involved this next set. Passing and setting has been somewhat erratic.

  42. Wen October 3, 2015 4:09 pm

After beating Penn State, Nebraska gets downed by #13 Ohio? Crazy!

  43. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:11 pm

  44. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:13 pm

    UH up 6-0. TO UCR

  45. Bleachercoach October 3, 2015 4:15 pm

#34…thanks for that info…just like Huff…I think coach puts too much studs and height behind Nikki…A good time to see if Castillo can pass…don’t want to wait for more injuries before we start shuffling….

  46. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:16 pm

UH up 8-1, UCR burns their second TO

  47. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:20 pm

Very bad rotation for UCR. Manu-Olevao serving It’s 14-1. Castillo in

  48. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:21 pm

    Rosas finally ends it. 15-2

  49. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:23 pm

Castillo is actually in for Manu-Olevao, They’re keeping Taylor in. 17-2

  50. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:28 pm

    Hawaii wins 25-5

  51. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 4:30 pm

Good news Higgins able to put weight on ankle

  52. Warriorfan October 3, 2015 4:31 pm

set 3 is more high level that I expected. Casey looked good, her armswing is getting way better and hitting with more power, I’m excited about her future. Koelsch and Taylor blocking on the right might be the best right side block in the country.

  53. Bleachercoach October 3, 2015 4:33 pm

Castillo is a great player….she just need play time…Let’s not wait too long and overuse a player especially Nikki….Nikki doesn’t look 100% on her lower body….I pray Greeley and Higgins get well…
Thanks Granato, Castillo, and Koelsch for stepping up when needed…

  54. haleiwacrossfitter October 3, 2015 4:36 pm

Didn’t Nebraska do this last year or the year before, too. I forget who, but I remember them beating someone, probably Penn St. and then losing the next night to a lower ranked team.

Also, didn’t Kalei roll her ankle against UCR in Riverside last year as well?

    It’s a night of Dejavu!!

  55. haleiwacrossfitter October 3, 2015 4:38 pm

Oh, and regarding Castillo passing. The times she has come in has normally been in the back row to pass and play some D.

I know she has been aced a few times, but I also remember her putting up some spot on passes as well. I think she could be, and will be, a very good passer in her time here and could be a left side hitter/passer.

  56. frings October 3, 2015 4:39 pm

Nebraska beats Penn State. Ohio State beats Nebraska. The Buckeye brown nosers move Ohio State to the top 5 and the Wahine stay at 10.

  57. T103 October 3, 2015 4:44 pm

HOLY MOLY 25-5? Shesh was a whipping. At least they took care of business in the 3rd set. Glad to hear that Higgins able to put pressure on it, and now with a couple of injuries they can put in some playing time for others. Keep up the good work, praying for quick recoveries for the injured. Keep doing you ladies!

  58. Warriorfan October 3, 2015 4:44 pm

Iowa gave PSU a battle too, almost took set 1 and 3 at PSU. I think PSU is just way down this year.

  59. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:45 pm

    56. not necessarily. Stanford losing likely drops them out of the Top 10.

  60. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 4:48 pm

    55. the comment was about why Granato and not Castillo. With Greeley, a left-side hitter and passer goes out, Granato is the first choice. happened when she came in for Manu-Olevao, also a left-side hitter and passer.

  61. tongo October 3, 2015 4:51 pm

Yeah, Casey moves well for 6’3″. Needs to get a lot stronger. Perhaps take a cue from Nikki Taylor and play sand volleyball to develop all around ball handling and hitting skills. She was MH/OH in HS but did she play any backcourt?

  62. jmy October 3, 2015 4:55 pm

    Minnesota beat Illinois in 5…

  63. frings October 3, 2015 5:01 pm

#59. Was trying to make the point that the sports world will do anything to promote Ohio State.

  64. noblesol October 3, 2015 5:02 pm

ESPN3 color announcer half the time had no idea who was on the court, and when she did odds were good she couldn’t say the whole name or pronounce it. In the 2nd set with Hawaii pretty much in control of the set, they let one fall behind the middle. Ugly play which the color announcer jumped on to proclaim a top 10 team would never let that happen. Then she completely reversed herself on on the next play when Hawaii got a thunderous kill, and proclaimed Hawaii was a top 10 team because of that play. Sheesh. ESPN, you might have grabbed just about any of the Hawaii fans at the Riverside game and let them do color, and they would have done a better job of calling the game for both Hawaii and Riverside.

  65. Maverick October 3, 2015 5:02 pm

Illinois lost twice, Stanford and Florida once each this week. I don’t see any of the team immediately below UH jumping them in the next poll. So I wouldn’t be surprised if UH is 7th next week. Ohio State should leapfrog Kansas and UCLA, so potentially 10th or 11th depending on how far Illinois, Stanford and Florida fall.

  66. haleiwacrossfitter October 3, 2015 5:05 pm

I just looked it up. It happened last year. To the same teams.

Nebraska beat Penn St. and then the next night loses to Ohio St. But last year it was at Nebraska.

    That is so weird

  67. tongo October 3, 2015 5:08 pm

Regarding our MHs, we are so fortunate to have three solid studs. Maglio is growing by leaps and bounds, while we are starting to see glimpses of why Mitchem was so highly recruited even at JC level. Both block and hit well. You get the feeling that both are still adjusting and learning, and both have a lot more upside. There were lots of misconnection with setter this weekend that hopefully will be fixed.

  68. Maverick October 3, 2015 5:11 pm

And, barring a UH loss, I expect UH to go no higher than 7th for awhile as the top six are really good with few losses and each plays in a much tougher conference than UH does. Need to have two more losses IMHO for one of those teams to fall below UH.

  69. jmy October 3, 2015 5:23 pm

Big matches tomorrow: UW at USC, Florida at Arkansas…Arkansas may be better than Missouri…

  70. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 5:36 pm

    couple of other of T25
    No. 16 Minnesota def. No. 7 Illinois, 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 25-10, 15-6
    No. 22 Oregon def. Utah, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11
Agree with No. 7 Illinois losing twice and No. 8 Stanford losing, UH should move up to 8 or 9. But you never know how the points will fall. With No. 11 UCLA losing, think Ohio State goes to at least 11, jumping over the Bruins and Kansas

  71. AlexM October 3, 2015 6:10 pm

Really hard to know how good this team can be until we see them against better competition. Granato seemed steadier than she was earlier in the season. I like her agressiveness and overall play. Koelsch needs to improve her timing/location with the hitters, but her blocking offsets her setting weaknesses. I also like her serves. She rarely makes errors and she is able to target different areas of the court.

  72. Maverick October 3, 2015 6:19 pm

    71. Agreed. Other than LBSU, hard to see any of the other team giving UH much trouble so long as UH takes the match seriously. UH must finish off every opponent as quickly as possible. But we will have to wait until the tournament to see if the team is a contender or a pretender.

  73. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 6:27 pm

    72. i think the match at Cal Poly will be tough. As will playing the 4 matches in 7 days. going up and down California.

  74. warriorfan October 3, 2015 6:35 pm

I agree, I think UH will get a tough bracket though, at UW or USC again. possibly ASU

  75. Maverick October 3, 2015 6:42 pm

    74. True, but I feel more confident about this team beating any of those three than I did last year. They have height and depth. Perhaps sweeping the four matches in seven days in CA at season’s end will provide some indication of the team’s skill and toughness.

Questions for Cindy: any news on Burns’ recovery? Has she officially been redshirted? I may have missed the reporting.

  76. warriorfan October 3, 2015 6:47 pm

    75. Me too But i think it’s important for Koelsch to play front row for Higgins because her block is huge and she will help slow down bricio or Scrambray/Gardner.
I think UH also has better middles than those three (maybe UW’s middles are equal) and if UH passes well they can win.

  77. Hot October 3, 2015 6:54 pm

I’m happy Koelsch finished nicely after a shaky start. Glad that Kahakai, who I thought really struggled in the first two weeks, has been very consistent recently. Good for Castillo to get her swings, and I hope Tai continues to be consistent in all aspects of her game. Go Wahine!

  78. AlexM October 3, 2015 6:59 pm

    73. I agree. Their worst enemy will be this road schedule. I wouldn’t be surprised if they drop a game on the road. Will have to wait and see how they respond to adversity at an opponents place. Can they come from behind in a 5 game match?

  79. tongo October 3, 2015 7:34 pm

#76 Agree that Koelsch continues to play regularly as she will definitely be needed in those moments – but for now, it is clear to me why Higgins is the starting setter.

  80. Astroboy October 3, 2015 7:44 pm

It was Kalei’s knee. I could see the trainer working on it. Looked like she was in a lot of pain coming off court, but by the end of the game she was pacing laps up and down the outside of the court. Hopefully nothing too serious.

  81. warriorfan October 3, 2015 7:50 pm

    79. I don’t see much of a drop off.

  82. mo-jo October 3, 2015 7:59 pm

#79 i’ll take koelsch’s six (6) blocks and no service errors any time. All she needs is to find her groove… she’ll be fine.

  83. nomu October 3, 2015 8:17 pm

I just wanted to give props to coach Hall for the great job he has obviously done. As the ESPN announcer said, credit also due to Robyn.

  84. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 8:39 pm

    75. they haven’t made it official but there would be no sense in playing her now.

we had a stringer at the UCR match. Story for tomorrow quotes Shoji as saying s that both Higgins and Greeley will have X-rays when they get back to Honolulu.

  85. Vbfan4life October 3, 2015 9:08 pm

I’m sure Kendra will be fine. She’s a gamer. Look at how she carried us against Florida.

Way to go despite the adversities of injuries. Here’s hoping that we heal fast and no more injuries

  86. Bleachercoach October 3, 2015 10:41 pm

At least at the moment pending Higs return, Kendra will have a couple days to practice with the starters “A” team….Who will be the setter on the “B” team during practice if Kahakai is Libero on “A” team….???…Short answer: Robyn Ah Mow?
I am sure the coaches have back up plans due to unforseen injuries or circumstances

  87. darkfire October 3, 2015 10:49 pm

It is evident that if you give Mitchem a yard, she will go a mile. Her talent is there. She just needs the right feed and BOOM, hand it over on a silver platter. I hope Koelsch will take all of this with a grain of salt and find the timing and nuances that Tayler Higgins spent a year finding out. GO BOWS! WOOF! 25-5!

  88. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 10:51 pm

BTW, 25-5 ties the record for fewest opponent points in the rally scoring era set in 2013 in Set 2 vs. Fullerton

  89. Cindy Luis October 3, 2015 10:54 pm

    86. Koelsch is a gamer and wants to keep improving. Which is why she didn’t play sand last season to work on her indoor game. Her background in surfing has her with a no fear attitude.

  90. Bleachercoach October 3, 2015 11:12 pm

I agree 86….she shows that willingness to learn.
Maybe the next couple practices will help her get use to setting/timing with “A” team of Higgins not ready to return full strength. IMO we really are fortunate to have 2 very good setters with different weapons they both offer….Lastly, get well Higs and Greeley!!! We need you both back

  91. rapid October 3, 2015 11:12 pm

    6 and 8. lol

    7. tai should rise to the challenge shouldnt she?

all kidding aside… may fortune favor na wahine and tayler and kalei heal up nicely. kendra did fine. her lock and launch ‘flat footed’ serve was steady and decisive. and she sure provides the stronger armor blocking than tayler. add mags to magnum in the block and na wahines armor is too thick.

‘mckenna did a nice job’ – dave at the end

casey did a couple nice blows at the end.

  92. abacaxi October 3, 2015 11:14 pm

    October 19, 2002 at SMU.
    Hawaii won 30-24, 30-6, 30-17.

Set 2 might have been a record for fewest opponent’s points during the 30 point scoring era.

  93. rapid October 3, 2015 11:24 pm

    78. yes they have came back in a 5 game match last year on the road vs irvine, it was on friday halloween and they were beaten to near death where irvine was about to finish them off with the sweep on their serve, one foot in the grave, left for dead, but then came push comes to shove, rise of na wahine! (courtesy of olivia magill and shar tai manuolevao!) proving its still ‘difficult to defeat the bows’ and irvine is still winless vs na wahine.

    87. coach of riverside was yelling at her players ‘dont embarass us and make us worse than the 25-5 set loss fulleton had’ lol. riverside was expected to be better than winless fullerton but faltered and fell flat even worse or just as worse at 25-5.

so daves words on tv if they were about ‘bottom feeders’….is accurate and wahine enjoyed a couple easy days, easy weekends and a lovely snack.

but of course they better not be chillin or falling asleep again!

  94. OrbitalRipZ October 3, 2015 11:45 pm

By the end of Sunday, NCAA DI Women’s Volleyball will have either 3 or 2 unbeaten teams left since 2 of the 4 unbeaten face each other: USC (picked to finish 5th in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll) host Washington (picked to finish 3rd).

Arizona State (picked to finish 2nd the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll … yes I said 2nd) hosts bottom feeder California (chosen 11th) and should a major upset occur — it won’t — there will be only two teams with perfect records.

Unfortunately, Kansas (15-0) of the weak Big 12 is one of the teams left standing with all Ws no Ls. The Jayhawks were voted to finish 4th in the 9-team Big 12, and thus far as has not faced any of the 3 teams expected to finish above it: Texas, Iowa St, and Oklahoma (1-2-3 in that order).

Heads up everyone. Sometime on Monday the NCAA will release its first weekly you-know-what to the public. That loss to UCLA will haunt the Bows long after Halloween is over.

    GO BOWS!

  95. hollycow October 4, 2015 12:02 am

    54. Greeley rolled her ankle in the Duke match.

    79. After the Riverside match, I too see why Shoji starts Higs.

  96. Ashley October 4, 2015 7:40 am

random, but i didn’t know Washington Head Coach Jim McLaughlin left to go coach for Notre Dame. Just noticed while watching the Notre Dame vs Syracuse match on ESPN3

  97. connor October 4, 2015 8:23 am

did not see match but note that olevao hit under .200. how was her returns of service during the match? do you think she had decent game?

  98. Ron October 4, 2015 9:13 am

I sure wish we could see more of Mitchem, she is such a dynamic player and any team with Taylor and Mitchem should go far.I just don’t know how Dave is going to get her on the court because the other middles are playing so well. I think Tai was set too often in this match. She does better when she is not featured as opposed to Nikki who plays better the more she is set. I also thought that Granato and Castillo showed they are ready to contribute. Kendra did very well considering this was her first start. Next weekend will be interesting.

  99. vbfan4life October 4, 2015 9:27 am

Agreed next weekend is crucial with csun and lbsu against us but personally I’d rather start Kendra and Castillo/Granato and ensure that Higgins & Greeley completely heal and only use them if we are forced to like how Dave was forced to play Nikki in that Texas match. Kendra has proven her mettle and the other two are still learning but adapting well and just need more playing time. Maybe this is their shot as many have wanted the b team to get more experience anyway

  100. noblesol October 4, 2015 10:06 am

Suggested reading for those with in interest in injuries common in physically active women: search for “Musculoskeletal Injuries in Military Women”, Colonel Barbara A. Springer, PhD, PT, OCS, SCS, and Major Amy E. Ross, MD. 2011.

Quote: “This publication sheds light on the nature of the bio-mechanical differences between women and men, and how these differences result in notable changes in injury patterns that impact the length of healing time and ultimately impact the readiness of the unit. Doctors Springer and Ross have provided us with an excellent tool for addressing the unique challenges healthcare providers face in providing the best possible care—both therapeutic and preventive—to our women military members.” Sonja M. 101. tongo October 4, 2015 10:33 am

#98 I am with you on this – how do you get Annie more playing time? Our offense, as our own commentators have mentioned, is very predictable. Sooner or later, an opponent will have the proper personnel match-up and devise a scheme to stop it a la UCLA. Other top teams will likely have these capabilities.
Many have suggested developing a 3 middle attack and put it in our arsenal, which I like. Typically, when opponents can device a plan to stop our traditional single focus attack (e.g. stop Hartong or Taylor) will also likely ended our season. This year is different because we have a lot of very capable players in the side line.

IMO, Tai can handle the higher amount of sets. Though the reason for Tai subpar hitting % was the adjustments to the different tempo and higher arch sets. Tai did adjust but not before being blocked 4x. Though Kalei actually hits better with the slower tempo and higher arch, giving her time to have a good look before placing her shots. Though Kendra did well for her first full match too.

#95. Yes. Koelsch has some “weaknesses” and with two key games next week, we’ll see if LBS finds a way to exploit that, if Higgins is unavailable. Ditto Greeley.

Key games as these are on the Wahine’s home court.

  103. AdmrVT October 4, 2015 11:32 am

Looks like Cal Poly has gotten “hot.” They may be tough to beat on their home court.

At this point Florida doesn’t even look like a top 15 team anymore.

  105. jmy October 4, 2015 12:25 pm

Looks like USC will be the new #1…Arkansas hanging on against Florida…

  106. mo-jo October 4, 2015 12:38 pm

I’m not sure we can justify Tai’s sub .200 hitting to higher sets. She’s hit sub .200 and gotten block more with lower sets. In fact its
because we’re not sure which Tai will show up…. The ‘good’ Tai or what sounds like a take off on a popular asian dish… The “bad” Tai.

  107. warriorfan October 4, 2015 12:38 pm

Florida won’t win the SEC, and they could fall out of the top 20, wow.

  108. jmy October 4, 2015 12:43 pm

    107. Possible…but you have to remember that Florida has played without a starter in each of the last three losses…still time for the Gators to catch fire…

ASU snapped 15-year losing streak to Stanford but unfeathering the rapidly sinking Cardinals 3-1 then skinning the California Golden Bears 3-0 this weekend.

And in the big one, USC climbed and climbed and climbed to become the new #1 in Monday’s AVCA Coaches’ Poll by taking down both the Cats (3-0 over Washington St) and the Dogs (3-1 over Washington).

Kansas played a nobody again and continues its winning strea.

Thus, as we start a new week in NCAA D-1 Women’s Volleyball, there are 3 teams left with a chance for a PERFECT REGULAR SEASON:

    15-0 ARIZONA STATE/Pac-12
    15-0 KANSAS/Big 12

  110. bleachercoach October 4, 2015 12:52 pm

I was watching Arizona beat Stanford and did you note that the commentors said she is the “Most Dynamic” hitter in the PAC-12? The other game when they played ASU , they commented that Coach Rubio said she is more talented than Madi Kingdom, their 1st Team All American last 2 seasonss…. Thats a big statement….Hawaii No Ka! Oi!!!

After today’s results, if there is any common sense in the world, UH should rise to 7th.

  112. warriorfan October 4, 2015 1:04 pm

108, thats not true they had Recek back in that loss to Missouri,, they did lose Dagostino though to an injury against Arkansas today.

  113. warriorfan October 4, 2015 1:05 pm

I would absolutely love it if the NCAA sent the wahine east to Kansas instead of the usual UW or USC.

#106 Don’t see the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde happening with TMO. In the four conference matches so far, Tai has hit .302 (.368,.316,.333 and .192). Call it what you may – but ESPN3 commentator Brittany Hochevar (Long Beach AA Setter in 2002 and AVP veteran who had partnered with both Misty May and Kerri Walsh) clearly though highly enough of Tai to interview her.

  115. connor October 4, 2015 2:23 pm

tongo: i do not think that you actually go to the matches. anyone who watches tai live and in person can see the dr. jekyll/mr. hyde every time out.

  116. Shar October 4, 2015 3:29 pm

I do go to the matches and do not see the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde of whom you speak. I see a girl who tries her best, encourages her teammates, uplifts her team, and leads through her own actions.

#115 Interesting, making personal remarks about me doesn’t change a thing. We are writing all of this “stuff” for entertainment. The only opinion that count is the coaching staff, and it is clear what they think of Tai. My first volleyball matches were watching the wahines with Beth McLaughlin take on the US National Team featuring Flo Hyman in two exhibition matches at Klum in 1974 or so. I have continue to go to their matches in person every year since.

  118. H-Man October 4, 2015 3:34 pm

Why are people dogging Tai? She is a very good player and team leader.

  119. mo-jo October 4, 2015 3:41 pm

#116, Luv the Na Wahine but we’re not talking about a good person which we all respect and love. we are simply talking about volleyball on-court consistency that will take us hopeful beyond the first round in the ncaa regionals. sub .200 outings with the likes of Riverside will simply not cut it IMHO. Looking at top tier teams, they have 2-3 terminators on the OH front. we have one (1). I think you can guess who that is.

  120. hollycow October 4, 2015 4:18 pm

Top tier teams may have 2-3 terminators on the OH front, but do they have the 3Ms in the middle like UH has? If UH passes well watch out for the 3Ms.

  121. AlexM October 4, 2015 4:21 pm

I don’t see Dave replacing Tai, unless she really implodes and isn’t able to work her way out of her funk. Granato seems to have improved from the start of the season, so maybe she can have another shot at Tai’s position.

Has Mitchem been used in practice on the outside? How’s her passing and defense? Hawaii is strong in middle with Magill and Maglio. We are weak at the pins. Tough to keep a 6″3 player, with a heavy arm and a solid block out of the lineup, either in the middle or outside .

  122. Cindy Luis October 4, 2015 4:34 pm

new thread up with Sunday’s scores.

    couple of comments.
Manu-Olevao has been voted team co-captain two years in a row. The coaches and players respect her. Agree she has off nights.
Mitchem is the third middle. What will get her more playing time is beating out Maglio, which doesn’t look like it’s happening. Have asked Shoji about moving her to the OH. He said no but with the injury to Greeley they might consider it. However, she is still learning to be a DI middle.

As for the injuries, was told both were feeling better today but that was before X-rays. They tried to get Higgins X-rayed Saturday but were unable to. And they left early Sunday morning. Will know more tomorrow.
