Happy New Year: Huff becomes two-sport Wahine
Thanks for your patience while things got worked out on the blog.
Jason Kaneshiro has the story about Huff on the Warrior World main page.
As mentioned, she is on basketball scholarship for the spring. At the moment it doesn’t change anything for the volleyball team in terms of recruiting as Huff is scheduled to be on volleyball scholarship for 2015.

I thought scholarships are for one academic year? Why does she need one from bball when she already have one from volleyball.
I hope UH ain’t violating any NCAArule here. I have never heard/seen an athlete get one scholie from one sports for only one semester and then get another one from another sport then go back to the original sport.
UH found some loophole in the NCAA policy that state that volleyball/basketball two sports athlete must be on basketball scholarship?
I’m sure both Shoji and Beeman knows the rules. Think they both have good reputations and don’t want to flush it down by messing up.
Will be intresting
1. Scholarships are for one academic year at a time and since she’s playing basketball now her scholarship for this academic year will count as a basketball scholarship and not a volleyball scholarship. That’s not a loophole. According to NCAA rules, if you are a multisport player then your athletic scholarships counts against the higher (or highest, if you play more than 2 sports) tier sport and basketball is a tier above volleyball.
What’s the word on Benedicte Maaseide?
I wonder what Alohi Robins-Hardy is thinking about this. She’s probably better off at BYU but……………..
-Well maybe UH volleyball can bring someone in for Spring?A middle would be great.
-Excited to see Megan play basketball, Now i have a reason to watch that team. Bum deal for Alohi, but oh well BYU is going well for her so far.
-Someone very reliable on volley talk says UH has hired it’s sand volleyball coach. I hope they announce it real soon and I hope it’s either Kevin Wong or Brad Keller.
– Sophie Bukovec has left Long Beach State and is gonna play beach volleyball only at USC. the right get richer, was hoping she would pick UH.
I know that it took some time to make sure this was all done within the rules. Had heard of the possibility before Christmas. Beeman held off on the announcement until team returned from the last mainland trip and all players were back after Christmas.
3. thank you for getting to the NCAA rule about the major sport. Huff wouldn’t have been able to play basketball as a walk-on.
5. but what? This didn’t come about until recently when Huff made a decision to play basketball. And it apparently has worked out.
My understanding is at the time Robins-Hardy was being recruited, UH did not have a basketball scholarship available. There was a recruit who committed but ended up not qualifying academically.
Timing is everything in this case.
6. There may not be a basketball scholarship for Huff next year, which means she’ll go back to volleyball. So there is no extra scholarship for a late recruit as I mentioned in the original post.
4. Maybe the addition of Heather Boyan means Maaseide is out?
Or maybe Maaseide shows up after spring semester starts.
1. interesting if they’ve hired someone since the position posting is open through Friday, Jan. 2.
