Getting to know newest Wahine Burns

nb

Sorry for the delay in this. Time difference definitely with eastern Canada an obstacle. Plus she wanted to have her parents add some comments.

Natasha Burns is a 6-5 middle from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She originally signed with West Virgina but when the coach left, the NCAA allows for someone who signed an NLI to transfer without penalty.

After getting her release she asked her recruiting coordinator to contact UH, which had been her top choice. She had spoken with Scott Wong when she was a junior but UH did not have an open scholarship. When her coordinator contacted UH, they did have a scholarship because of Megan Huff moving over to basketball. The timing was pretty amazing as both her inquiry and the decision Huff happened within days in March. Very similar to Magill’s situation when she was looking to transfer from Arizona and Vorster’s deciding to transfer to Liberty.

Going to have a story in Wednesday’s paper with more details but here’s some of her comments about why she wanted to play for UH

The volleyball program was initially what attracted me, UH has had a very strong program headed by great coaching staff. I always heard good things about the program. My coaches from Defensa always spoke very highly of their program and Coach Shoji. UH also has a good marine biology program, which Im very interested in.

Everyone has been very supportive, telling me how proud they are. I have not made a campus visit yet, I might be taking one after the sand season is finished! Im just so excited to get to know my future home.

She said she doesn’t know Emily Maglio but “It’s a comforting thought to know I will have a fellow Canadian on the team who can help me settle into life at UH.”

What a great catch!!!! Position wise, it is an area where we could use more depth, also, can’t teach height.

    With Aloha….

So, is this the recruit that was rumored to be from UC Irvine? Or is that somebody else? I’ve been out of the loop with this rumor.

    5. Nope it’s someone else

  7. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 10:07 am

    5. Despite rumors posted here and elsewhere (not from me) during the guessing game, there was no recruit from UCI nor from Nebraska.
Had posted before that I didn’t know who it was. But I did know who it wasn’t.

    4. we connected last week but the time difference, her schedule, waiting on picture, and her wanting her parents to add some comments delayed the story.
should run in the paper and online Wedneday.

Wonderful news! On another note, just saw Emily Hartong with her team after her team won gold. Here is what was written on the TeamUSA Site. Don’t know if the link will work. I tried to paste in a photo I took off the Volero site, but it would not paste.

“In the Swiss Volley playoffs, Volero captured the playoff title with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Volley Koniz on April 16. Volero won the best-of-five championship series round, dropping just one set in its three victories. Volero now will train in preparation of hosting the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship being staged in Zurich May 6-10. For a photo gallery of the championship celebration, click here.”

Seems like another in a growing list of recent middles – tall but can’t hit out of a paper bag. Good but nowhere close to what’s needed for Hawaii to compete at the highest. Hey, hope I’m wrong and all you Shoji worshippers can hammer me. Don’t think so though. For all of you foaming with hate for this assessment – print it out and save it for when season starts.

  15. localboy April 21, 2015 2:47 pm

bouncingball – why the negatively? Still lots of time for redshirting or improvement. No need to be ragging on a college freshman before the season.

  16. turfwar April 21, 2015 2:48 pm

So bouncingball who are the middles that are needed to “compete at the highest levels? You must have names of players that you think fall in that category currently playing in college.

  17. hollycow April 21, 2015 2:53 pm

Cindy, still waiting on Shoji’s comments on the new recruits. I’m guessing that he’s waiting until they enroll in Summer School, to be sure, sure that they are here.

  18. Warriorfan April 21, 2015 2:56 pm

the coaches are probably not counting on Natasha to contribute until her second or third year. Can’t imagine why they wouldn’t take a 6′ 6 athlete with speed.

    14. Ugh

  19. Cindy Luis April 21, 2015 3:20 pm

    14. don’t understand the negativity at all for a young woman you have not seen play.

and not sure who your ‘growing list of middles would include. She’s a freshman. She may redshirt. She may not. They needed another middle.

    17. shoji can’t comment on Burns until she is enrolled in school. She also didn’t sign a letter of intent. because you can only sign on NLI. she signed what is called a scholarship agreement.

Anyway new thread up on Keani Passi playing at Chaminade
