Friday checkin: Wahine, Warriors, U19 boys
Wahine have the morning off. they have an earlier afternoon practice so they can go support the soccer team in its opening at Waipio.
did run into Wade and he said all his guys were in (think he means in terms of being admitted to school) including the 6-8 Dutch OH Stin van Tilburg.
Not here yet is Campolindo’s Joe Worsley, who is listed as a setter but currently a libero with the USA U19 team at the FIVB championships. They are in the quarters for the first time in event history
Match underway (730 a.m. HST) vs. Russia below

Wade said he was close to announcing his assistant to replace Spencer McLachlin who is playing on the AVP Tour. paperwork may have been delayed until school is in session Monday and today is a state holiday.
He didn’t say who it is but pretty sure it’s Josh Walker who is back in Hawaii with wife and new baby. Had a photo of Josh last month when he was helping out with the Wahine camp.
The other players in a very large class are alphabetically (last school listed, all Hawaii or california unless noted otherwise
James Anastassiades (OH, 6-4) Huntington Beach
Colton Cowell (6-1 OH) King Kekaulike
Steven Duhoux (6-3 S) Orange Coast (JC)
Garrison Gabriel (5-11 L) Moanalua
Patrick Gasman (6-9 M) Buchanan
Brandon Rattray (6-5 OH) Rancho Bernardo
Brett Rosenmeier 6-5 OPP) Frank W. Cox (Va.)
Dalton Solbrig (6-6 OH) Lakes Community (Ill)
Ben Vaught (6-4 OPP) Huntington Beach
Just for fun this would be my starting seven when the going gets tough.
LS1-Mitchell
LS2-Greeley/Tai (can’t decide)
MH1-Magill
MH2-Maglio
S- Higgins
L-Kahakai
RS-Taylor
Ron, not bad but through yesterday, Mitchem has not taken a swing from the pin during the team stuff.
Shoji and I spoke about his depth chart for next week’s preview and he has a lot of options to consider. we’ll see what happens.
Yes Ron, that is my Wish list for the starting line up as well…putti g Olevau as OH2.
Thanks for confirming Stijn Van Tilburg, a great class that will bring lots of excitement to UH warrior volleyball and great news about Josh Walker. i think he will be a terrific hire.
I think you have to start Greeley because she’s a more consistent passer.
Sorry gang, I don’t think you’ll see Mitchem working out on the outside anytime soon. From Shoji’s comments about Burn’s injury, and being down to 3 middles, nothing about trying out to the outside, only that Mitchem will get more reps as the only B team middle. Maybe it’s a good thing for the offense, spreading the sets around instead of having the enemy stacking the block on one leftside hitter.
u19 team with Ma’a and Worsley lost to defending champion Russia today 25-22 25-20, 25-23. U.S.’s first loss in the tournament.
they will play the loser of Brazil-Argentina in consolation semis that determine 5-8
The sleeper or x-factor of this Wahine team might be Megan Huff. I like her upside.
8. could be. She is looking more and more like a volleyball player.
Derek, totally agree. Ever since Cindy mentioned her progress and given the fact that she is one of the best athletes on the team I have been wondering how she could fit in and contribute. A coaches dilemma for sure.
#6 I would not get upset regardless of your bend on where you think Annie plays. Season is young and the current circumstances is very awkward. Dave needs to put a cohesive team that can play together on the floor within a week to make sure we win out in pre-season and have a chance to host. IMO, everything else is secondary.
11. My post on Annie is to all the posters making predictions of the starting lineup and other quotes putting Mitchem on the outside not my bend of where Annie should play.
Had a short chat with Mitchem, asking her how she was doing and how hard was it to come in after being ‘the’ player and maybe not start.
She said that it’s going to take time to earn a spot, that you can’t just walk in and expect it. Said she has a lot of adjustments to make and it will take a while so she will keep working hard. said the hardest thing was the faster pace of the game and that the balls don’t go down that she’s used to because Hawaii’s defense is good.
Cindy, how is Casey Castillo looking? With all the focus on Mitchem and the returnees, I am curious about how Casey is progressing.
Regardless of the constitution of the A-team, the depth in their practice opponent B-team could mean a strong overall team like the 2015 Warriors enjoyed with their depth.
Hello Cindy Thanks as always on keeping us informed!
Aside from Mitchem the talk this off season seems to be Emily Maglio…From your assessment how is she performing so far in practice?
i would even throw Granato as the 3rd LOH…
13. Maglio has improved from last season when we didn’t get to see much of her. Playing sand definitely helped and she has a quick arm.
14. Castillo looks good. Another one who is adjusting to a backup role after being a star. She had a couple of stuffs of Taylor which made her smile and she’s jumping well, coming down on the ball.
17. don’t know right now about Granato as the third OH. I like her game, very savvy, gets up well but still undersized when you look at Castillo out there. Shoji has a lot of good options and a lot of talent.
