Day 5, Practice I

Team had the morning off, went fairly long tonight. 330-620 isn

More skill sessions. Felt like the team made some great strides from Sunday. The new players seem to be more comfortable out there, a little more relaxed, now that they know how things are set up.

Someone had asked about certain people serving. in the mini scrimmages, they don’t always serve, a coach will toss a ball over on one side of the court and they’ll play from there.

Was impressed with Kahakai. Solid platform, very accurate passing and the off-set. Passi reminds me so much of Tita Ahuna in her demeanor and the way she moves, confident and very efficient.

The scrimmages were intense and competitive. There was one lineup that had all Hawaii players. Higgins, Adolpho, Passi, Manu-Olevao, Kahakai and Long. Magill was out as the second MB.

One lineup put up a big front. Had Huff, Maglio and Greeley, averaging nearly 6-3 across. Freshman setter Koelsch is an excellent blocker as well.

Think that’s about it. more tomorrow.

Wow, Cindy, comparing Passi, to Tita Ahuna, that is high praise indeed. She must be like Tita, in those areas that you mentioned, cause I know you do not give out praises like that to often. Not only that but this is the 4th or 5th time you have mentioned Koelsch blocking ability. Cannot wait to see her on the court, blocking. Either you are getting soft, or some of these new players are really good, in your eyes. I am leaning toward the latter, that some of these players are really good, in your eyes.

Cindy, just one question, is Greeley taking Taylor’s spot right now in practice? If she is, it could only benefit her and the team by taking more reps, which she probably would not be able to do, if Taylor was healthy. Also, cannot wait to see how this team jells once Taylor is healthy and back on the court.

Cindy, sorry for all the comments, or questions, but here is another question. Who in your opinion, seems to be taking a leadership role on this years team, is it Nikki Taylor, from the sidelines, or one of the Seniors, or is it still to early to tell?

    I have no questions 🙂

    Steven,
    1. not getting soft. they are raw but talented. said Passi reminded me of Ahuna in her demeanor on court and solid all-around skills.
    2. Greeley is not replacing Taylor in some lineups. in some she is. They are still looking at options.
3 Taylor is not always in the arena, sometimes she is in the weight room working out, things like stationary bike. so, no, she is not in position to be a leader. She cheers for good play when she is on the sidelines, just as the other players not on the court do.
Higgins has begun to take charge, as a setter should. more vocal than I remember but that’s probably because that role belonged to Uiato last year.
Adolpho is a very calming presence but she isn’t on the court all the time since she isn’t in the serving rotation and is swapped out for the other middle in the front row.

It is good to hear that Passi reminds you of Tita Ahuna, cause Tita was one heck of a player.

I just hope that Higgins, Nikki, or one of the seniors takes a leadership role on this team, cause every good team needs a leader. Someone needs to step up and take that role.

Taylor Higgins will be the leader, vocal or otherwise. You could see that last season on the sidelines, when she was the orchestrator of the cheering from the bench. Nikki also is part of that, being very vocal and outgoing. We’ll see as the season goes from the new players as they get comfortable playing in the SSC, who is vocal and steps up.
Why does anyone always state the obvious?????

    8. thanks HTV has some good interviews up.

You’ll notice that there is music in the background of practices. That’s a first. Even Shoji’s wife was surprised when she came to her first practice Thursday

Cindy, have you been at Wahine volleyball practice Friday & Saturday? If you have, what transpired? Or, did Dave give the Wahine 2 days off?

  13. Cindy Luis August 16, 2014 5:01 pm

    10. i don’t think there is a designated media day. But they are doing a team photo shoot next week so it might be then. Media can come to any practice. Most of them showed up last Sunday, first day of practice. except for KITV for whatever reason.

  14. Cindy Luis August 16, 2014 5:02 pm

    12. yes I’ve been to practice both days.

  15. mauna August 16, 2014 5:17 pm

    13. Thanks Cindy, that’s it, the photo shoot when they put their unis on, and the major channels cover it in the sports news.

  16. Cindy Luis August 16, 2014 5:36 pm

The major channels were there Sunday, except KITV.

Cindy, just wondering what has been going on at practice, Friday, and Saturday? Are the Wahine still practicing twice a day?
