Day 12 recap, Ljungquist at practice, season tickets

One of the all-time Wahine greats Angelica Ljungquist dropped into practice today to say hello. Wouldn’t let me take a picture of her, said she had just come from the beach. But she looked great. She is in law school in Sweden, hasn’t decided what her specialty will be. Will have more on her later when I transcribe the interview.

Shoji introduced her, spoke about how she was a great all-around player, great passer before the libero was introduced. Said that when the libero was added that she called him to say that ‘they just eliminated me.’ meaning a middle who played 6 positions.

With the arena being prepped for the scrimmage, the team was in Gym 1 for the first time this season. Team bonding meant they swept and mopped the floor, standard procedure normally, and setting up nets.

Pretty humid. lots of water breaks. Small-group sessions by position. nothing real exciting to be honest.

Season tickets at 3793, closing in on 3799, which was the last high in 2008. High was over 4,000, believe in the Kahumoku-Willoughby years.

Cindy, when Dave was interviewed by KGMB, or was it KHNL, he stated that Nikki Taylor will miss the 1st weekend of the season. Hoping to get her back by the 2nd, or 3rd, weekend. Just to let you know.

Wow, first Aneli, now Angelica, stopping by practice, I am expecting some of the other Wahine greats to be stopping by practice, soon. It is great to hear that Angelica has come back to the Islands for a visit. Just to bad she would not let you take a pic of her.

Would’ve been nice if she could have made it to the Alumnae scrimmage whether to play or be a guest coach. I agree that it would be great to see what she looks like now. Some of my favorite 6-ro MB’s include Angelica, Bown, & Lima.

Why do you think season ticket sales are up near an all-time high? Somebody mentioned that it could possibly be because this could be Dave’s last year. I don’t remember there being a huge spike in season ticket holders after that last class of 7 seniors graduated, making room for the year of the “Cardiac Keiki”.

Either way, I am excited for another year of Wahine VB. I can’t wait to see Magill and Passi in action. I hope watching them hit via online streaming does their physicality justice.

Has Anjelica and Robyn kept in touch? Back in the day, they appeared to be great friends and teammates.

    2. I’ll get a picture when she comes to the scrimmage Saturday

    3. Anj is in law school so she takes vacation when she can. she’s also close with Kahumoku, who was here for her 10 year reunion from Kamehameha and is staying to have her baby in November. I’m sure some of you have read about the tragic deaths of her two sets of twins shortly after birth.

I mentioned the increase could be because it’s Dave’s 40th. I don’t believe it’s his last year but may others do.
also mentioned previously that the number of new local players could be attracting family, friends, former club players.

  7. Cindy Luis August 22, 2014 9:44 pm

    4. yes, they have. they also were playing in Europe at the same time. They had a nice reunion today. Think it’s the first time that Ljungquist has met Ah Mow-Santos’ keiki. they both were in the gym, daughter in the stroller, son shagging balls. he’s on break, goes to a year-round school.

    10. appropriately impressed. Clapped. After all, they have one of the all-time greats in the gym every day. She did spend a little time with the MBs.

i remember a story that was done in the paper, i can’t remember if it was cindy or ann anymore … but it was an article on robyn some time ago, and it described her car accident playing in europe years back, and the article mentioned that angelica (who was also playing in europe) went directly to see robyn, as soon as she heard the news. i don’t doubt they’ve stayed in touch all these years. the two of them were the foundation that revived the program after it hit a bit of a lull in the early 90s.

    14. I know, hard to tell us apart.

Another reference to the accident in a story by Grace Wen, who was covering the Wahine during the time I was sports editor of the Star-Bulletin and a couple years after.

Cindy – oh man, I didn’t mean it like that … Just meant I’ve read so many articles over the years that I can’t keep any of it straight. Didn’t mean to offend …. The article on Robyn was cool to see again. Reminds you of the tremendous sacrifice and commitment she made to team USA given her children and family situation. And the role her mom played in all that.

    10. Only one all time greats of the game. 1982 Deidre Collins, National title. Others, who cares?

  19. Tiki808 August 23, 2014 11:09 am

    10. Men’s side, they got their national title stripped because Dejan Milodinovich was only 6-7 MB. That is considered a small team. 2000 or 2001 or 2002, they had it taken away. Coach Mike Wilton was not known by Dejan.

  20. Cubicle1126 August 23, 2014 11:11 am

There’s something seriously wrong with Tiki ….

  21. Tiki808 August 23, 2014 11:14 am

MPSF of which Dejan Milodinovich 6-7 MB was a part of and on the team. According to news reports then, an ineligible player was found to be Dejan. Reports then on Kaleo Newspapers were cited as not making the grades or the information on Dejan was not accurate or known. Forfeit was in order. A big blow then for the program. Under suspension or probation status and not qualified NCAA division I team.

I love Angelica, she was fantastic!

  23. Cindy Luis August 23, 2014 12:13 pm

    18. It’s Deitre. they also won in 83
    Ljungquist was the program’s first four-time All-American.

    19. It was Theocharidis who was declared ineligible, not Milodinovic.

    20. yes.

    21. Program never put on probation. it was penalized because Theocharidis was found to have played on a pro team while an amateur. Although he never took money.

Still bothers me that in other sports, college kids can play in pro-ams, such as golf, which is obviously playing with professionals. Or Isaac Fotu playing for New Zealand against Pros in Asia.
Feel that if UH would appeal the volleyball title vacated that they would win, given the change in the feeling towards pro-ams these days.
Theocharidis was not stripped of his All-American awards, only the title was vacated. Rich Sheriff still has the one that was hanging up in his office.

  24. Cindy Luis August 23, 2014 12:18 pm

    17. i was joking. as in all female sports writers look alike as we know ‘-)
but can’t count the number times that I’d be at the press table and people came down and starting calling to me. Ann, Ann … I didn’t turn around. Someone next to me said I think they want to get your attention. Got up, said hello and said, “I’m not Ann.’

  25. Cubicle1126 August 23, 2014 3:43 pm

    Cindy — haha … gotcha
