BYU-Hawaii into DII national final
Junior All-American hitter Shih Ting “Stella” Chen put down 21 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a five-set win today over West Texas A&M and into the NCAA II women’s national volleyball championship final in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Junior middle Erh Fang Hsu added 17 kills and junior libero Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo 24 of the team’s 90 digs in the 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 15-11 victory over the Lady Buffs at the U.S. Cellular Centet.
BYU-Hawaii advances to Saturday’s championship against six-time defending champion Concordia-St. Paul.. Concordia-St. Paul ended the Seasiders’ season last year in the national semifinal.
West Texas A&M (35-4) was led by Lauren Bevan’s 23 kills.
It was the third straight five-set match for the Seasiders, who have won their last 22.
BYU-Hawaii trailed 11-9 in Set 5 but scored the last six points, five behind the serving of defensive specialist Kathleen Collette. Collette finished with 17 digs.
Junior setter Ying Chun “Michelle” Chen added a double-double for the Seasiders (58 assists, 15 digs).
Maybe Dave should recruit 6plus feet international players? Gurantee he’ll win that elusive title!
Giving Stella a superwoman label for taking 155 swings in two nights.
At least we got one Hawai’i team playing for a national championship. Go Seasiders!!
1. he has. Ljungquist, Gustin, etc. still hasn’t won
1. and if you’re referring to BYUH’s Chen, she’s 5-11 (generous). Hsu in the middle listed at 6-0
both from Taiwan.
4. At least with Ljungquist we reached the National Championship match and with Gustin, we went to the Final Four 3 out of her 4 years on the team. It feels waaay better to come up short in the Final Four versus the 2nd round.
Good luck Seasider Ladies!!! Play hard and bring home the championship!!!
6. the comment was to recruit 6-foot-plus international players, guarantee a title.
Shoji has, and it hasn’t happened.
Are you sure this is not the Taiwan Nationalist Collegiate volleyball team playing for BYU-Hawaii?????
Will you let us know when the BYU H team will be arriving back home, win or lose. (e.g. airline, etc)
Info to view at BYUH campus or online. 3 PM
What time is the national championship game since I can’t see the elite 8 matches might as well see this one.
3:00m Hawaii time
9. they have 3 players from Taiwan. who have been in the program for 3 years.
and your point?
12 why can’t you see the elite 8? they’re all streamed online
10. no, i don’t have the info at the moment. will ask their SID for it.
BYUH loses in 3
For Concordia it was a lucky seven indeed. Every set they were tied 7-7 and then they pulled away to win their seventh straight national championship, a feat that no sport in any division accomplished.
Since Concordia is graduating five seniors this year, leaving only one senior for next year, while BYU-Hawaii will have a slew of talented seniors, next year be the year if they can improve on ball control and gain a few inches on vertical leap. They should come home proud that they made it so far this year. Better luck next year.

NCAA updated the ‘record’ thing. It’s actually only for volleyball at any division.
With the Golden Bears win, it becomes the longest streak of consecutive national championships at any level in volleyball. The record was shared with Washington (Mo.) at the Division III level between 1991 and 1996. The streak is also tied for the fourth-longest Division II championship streak in any women’s sport.
The seven total titles are more than any other DII program, with the next closest being Portland State (4) while Barry and West Texas A&M each have three titles
