Bourne, Hyden win beach gold

sorry, thought this had gotten posted .it was in pending.  thanks Cubi for making me check. i had written it for the Monday edition of the paper.

Aiea’s Tri Bourne partnered with John Hyden of Florida to win their first World Tour beach volleyball gold medal on Sunday, defeating compatriots and fellow qualifiers Ryan Doherty and John Lucena 21-17, 21-11 in an all-American final at the FIVB Berlin Grand Slam in Germany.

Both teams came out of the qualification tournament. Bourne (Academy of the Pacific, USC) and Hyden did not drop a match.

It was the first time in FIVB history that two qualifying teams made it to the gold-medal match of a Grand Slam.


In Sunday’s semifinals, Hyden and Bourne defeated Brazil’s No. 11 Emanuel Rego and Pedro Salgado 21-16, 21-13. Doherty and Lucena advanced after defeating Brazil’s No. 12 Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison Cerutti 21-15, 21-18, 15-11.

The next stop on the 2014 Grand Slam World Tour is in Stavanger, Norway, on Tuesday through Saturday.

    caught the end of us-russia match online in world league play. usa men pulled out a gutsy 5 set win at russia. the 5th set went deep into extra play.
