Banachowski coming to congratulate Shoji

I missed the note on it as well in Ann’s story the other day. sorry

But just spoke with Banachowski who said he’d be out here this week to “Congratulate Dave, shake his hand and maybe go share a beer.’

He said to not make a big deal out of his coming out, that this is about Dave this week. That he wanted to honor and show his respect for a great friend and coach.

it’s a special club that the likes of shoji and banachowski belong to. few, if any, of the coaches starting out these days will reach that kind of milestone. the climate of coaching allowing them to take the reins at such a young age (not to mention the 30-40 or more match seasons back in the day) helped them on their way to a 1,000 win career. it’s a milestone that celebrates their success, longevity and devotion to the sport.

  2. Beauston September 4, 2013 2:43 pm

A classy act from a classy coach to honor another class act. Yes, indeed. A class of its own.

  3. setaone September 4, 2013 2:56 pm

Not only that, but both did it at the same school. Does Shoji’s include wins from when he was the Men’s coach as well?

  4. turfwar September 4, 2013 3:23 pm

Fans should make it a point to come out for every home game this year. I wouldn’t be shocked if Dave decides this is his last year.

  5. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 3:27 pm

    3. no, Shoji’s total is strictly as a women’s DI coach.
Shelton Collier is listed No. 3 but his win total has an asterick since he is now at Wingate, a non-DI school

  6. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 3:29 pm

    4. TF, don’t get that sense from Shoji. Unless he wins it all this year … but, knowing him, he’d want to then try to win 2 in a row. He has told me that he’ll evaluate after the season is over. I believe him. I also think that he’ll stay for at least his 40th season. nice number. Don’t think he’ll stay for 50, which is what Scates did.

  7. Kazu September 4, 2013 4:36 pm

Will be nice to see Banachowski at the SSC. Guess he will have a front row seat with the UCLA team, or do they have a special seating area for people like him.

  8. mei mei September 4, 2013 4:53 pm

    wow! that’s pretty cool!

  9. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 5:57 pm

    7. Don’t know where he will be sitting. When I spoke with Sealy yesterday he was unaware Andy was coming. my guess is Banachowski may be over on the scouting/VIP tables. like where the Gov. have been sitting. or up on the riser where Rich Sheriff likes to sit. Doubt if he’d be on the bench. As he said, this isn’t about him. it’s about Shoji.
I did tell Banachowski I was happy he was coming because the fans of Hawaii never got a chance to say thank you for he had done for the sport. Have known him since I was writing for the Daily Bruin sports section in the 70s. Think one of my first events I covered for the DB was the NIVT tourney the Bruins used to host.

  10. LC September 4, 2013 6:13 pm

I hope he is introduced and gets a standing O from the fans.

  11. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 6:16 pm

UH knows he’s coming so I’m sure he’ll be introduced.

wo of a kind great coaches, gentlemen and deserving of all the accolades for their contributions to college volleyball and their respective institutions. Mr. Scates, too. I have enjoyed watching them lead their teams into battle over the years. And very gracious of Coach B. to honor his friend and collegue in his accomplishment. Go Wahine!

  14. John September 4, 2013 7:05 pm

Will Andy be attending all the games or just the NMSU game? I`m sure he wouldn`t want to miss the Wahine and UCLA batlle it out. Gonna be good!

  15. John September 4, 2013 7:36 pm

Cindy are all the teams in town yet or just NMSU? If so did you have a chance to speak with Mike Jordan about 2morrows match and what his thoughts are about Shoji POSSIBLY tying the record for most wins against his team.

  16. LC September 4, 2013 7:51 pm

I read two interviews today with Jordan most of it was about his team but the subject of Shoji came up in both.

It was all praise about the program that he created in Hawai`i.

  17. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 7:53 pm

    14. don’t know if Andy will be coming to all matches. but I’m sure he’ll be at UCLA vs. Santa Clara opener.
would think he’s at both matches Friday since he’d watch the Bruins then, if Shoji passes him that night, he’d be there.
    15. all teams are here. they all had practices today. UCLA got in Tuesday. NMSU today. not sure when Santa Clara got here.

  18. John September 4, 2013 7:56 pm

Thanks Cindy for the update. Will you have an update later on what happened at practice today and what things they worked on?

  19. John September 4, 2013 7:56 pm

@ 16. Where did you read the interviews? Is there a link? Thanks in advance.

  20. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 8:04 pm

    16. Yep, Jordan had nothing but praise for Dave and the program. I’m working on a story for our special on Shoji that will be printed next week. Jordan one of 20 or so coaches I’ve been talking to the past few weeks.
Jordan and I joked about yet again he’d be part of a Shoji celebration. Shoji’s 1,000th was also against NMSU. There was the WAC championship here, senior night. Said most of his players haven’t experienced the Arena yet and may be a bit in awe Thursday.
said that he always would prefer that his team wins but if they don’t, from the standpoint of a vollryball fan, he and his players have loved being part of the special nights. said it was an honor to call Shoji a friend.

  21. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 8:05 pm

    19. nope, ann was at practice. she’s back to being the beat writer. I’m writing for our special that comes out next week.

  22. setaone September 4, 2013 8:09 pm

Is it Santa Clara that runs the 2-set to the middle and shoots to the outsides?

  23. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 8:12 pm

John, when you commit to a tournament, you come in at least 1 day ahead. All teams have 1 practice in the arena. IF they come in early, like UCLA or Texas, they are not allowed to practice in the arena beforehand. Neither do the Wahine. At least that’s how Hawaii runs its tournaments, same practice venues for all
Teams are in Gym 1 for any practice prior to the day before a tournament starts. with NMSU arriving today they only got to practice in the arena. they practiced at home yesterday.

  24. John September 4, 2013 8:27 pm

@ 23. Ahhh, I see. Thanks for the inside scoop didn`t know that even though I`ve been following Wahine VB since 87. LOL!

  25. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 8:57 pm

    22. don’t know if that’s the offense Santa Clara is running this year.
interesting that Stauber was headed to Santa Clara until Strehow decided to transfer late to Pepperdine. and then Stauber ended up at UCLA. Stauber destined to be here this weekend one way or the other.

  26. Cubicle1126 September 4, 2013 9:09 pm

i’m still wondering what “AVCA Poignant” means … why won’t Purple&Green tell us?? 🙂

  27. roofer68 September 4, 2013 9:43 pm

Couldn’t come up with a URL, but if you type in… new mexico state volleyball faces two top 10 teams in Hawaii tournament you’ll should have a link to the Las Cruces Sun-News article with Jordan and Ziegler’s comments on the trip. Of the 19 players on the Aggies squad only three girls played in the SSC.

  28. Cindy Luis September 4, 2013 9:49 pm

or you can always google Las Cruces newspaper
which takes you to then click on sports

  29. genotamayo September 4, 2013 9:51 pm

Turfwar i would love to come to all the game but because the games start so late it would be hard taking a cab home after every home

  30. roofer68 September 4, 2013 10:39 pm

Thanks Cindy, lacking computer know how.

  31. WaWa September 4, 2013 10:59 pm

    22. I believe you are thinking of Saint Mary’s offense. At least when ‘Iolani alumnae Megan Burton was there. I believe this style of play continued after she used up her eligibility.

On a side note, Santa Clara features Taylor Dayton, Punahou 2013.

  32. Warriorfan September 4, 2013 11:02 pm

Just noticed Nainoa Frank was taken off the 2014 roster. Too bad he seemed to have tons of potential.

But might be a mistake since Dane Keckin and Hendrik Mol haven’t been added and they seem to be at UH.

  33. Warriorfan September 4, 2013 11:10 pm

Anyone know what prepvolleyball ranked Greeley and Kahakai?
I also wonder if UH is going after #44 uncommitted outside hitter Frankie Shebby
Shebby and Mitchem would round out the class nicely.

  34. po'okela September 5, 2013 2:52 am

    greeley I believe 34 and kahakai 65?

I may be a little off.

  35. Hot September 5, 2013 4:58 am

Who does the stats for UH? The stats page on the UH website says Kyra Goodman played in 1 match (San Diego).

  36. LC September 5, 2013 7:35 am

Learned some things on Leahey & Leahey. Russ Rose just 12 wins behind which will make Dave’s record short lived.

Certain coaching moves could have produced a different result in the SD match.

    Gues, Chris McLachlin

  37. Cindy Luis September 5, 2013 7:37 am

they have a stats crew that uses the volleydata program.
I’ll remind them. Her name showed up in Set 1
We know that Tuaniga got in, she’s missing in the final box but shows up in the Set 4 stats that were broken down.
their play by play has UH taking a 3-0 lead in Set 5. that’s wrong.

  38. Cindy Luis September 5, 2013 7:40 am

    36. it’s 11 wins behind shoji.
    Shoji at 1,105
    Rose at 1094

  39. LC September 5, 2013 7:41 am

    He said 12 I didn’t.

  40. Cindy Luis September 5, 2013 7:44 am

    40. wasn’t saying you were wrong. just the number was.
Rose is 12 behind tying Banachowski. perhaps that’s where 12 came from.

  41. Cindy Luis September 5, 2013 7:46 am

Rose was unaware of the number until we spoke on Tuesday. He said it all depended on when Shoji decided to retire and how well he (Rose) does the next few seasons. Said he loses 6 seniors this year so rebuilding next year.
said if he catches Shoji, he’d be happy, not for the record but because it meant his team had won their matches.

  42. Cindy Luis September 5, 2013 8:13 am

Or LC could have been that they didn’t update their stats after last weekend Coming into the season, Rose was 12 behind Shoji
But with UH going 2-1 and Penn State 3-0 it’s now down to 11.
Or they could have gone off the AVCA poll which had Penn State 2-0 when they were 3-0.

  43. roofer68 September 5, 2013 9:32 am

    34. po’ close enough, 35, 64. Poor old Rose, he only gets 2014 Senior Aces 1, 2, 8, 12 and 13 for starters.

  44. mei mei September 5, 2013 10:04 am

@42 MAN~~ wished we could get recruits like that!!! :/

  45. Warriorfan September 5, 2013 2:33 pm

Thanks for the info on Kahakai and Greeley, PSU is gonna have some of those girls transfer I bet. It wouldn’t surprise me if Aiyana Whitney leaves after this year, hopefully to UH 🙂

I am pretty confident that Greeley will prove she will be better than 34, she should be top 10 IMO.

  46. max13 September 5, 2013 3:34 pm

    22. I think the offense you’re talking about is St. Mary’s. Their offense is somewhat unorthodox in that both in and out of system they run second tempo sets to their middles and shoots to the pins.
