Coach Shoji scheduled the Texas game after the Longhorns became national champs in 2012.

My point in my previous post on a different thread was Coach Shoji deliberately went for the homerun in his scheduling this year knowing that an early win over Texas would place the wahine in a favorable post-season selection position. As I mentioned, it was a huge gamble that is paying dividends. Again, kudos to the master.

Of the 322 teams, I think the top 40 in RPI have a better than 50-50 chance to win berths into the 64-team field, while those 41-70+ in RPI are probably “bubble” teams (unless they win their conference championship outright).
Thus:
Pac-12 = 9 out of the 12 conference members are in the top 40 ~ and if all 9 get in, that will be a new record for the Pac-12
Big Ten = 8/12 are in the top 40 ~ and if all 8 get in, I think that will tie the Big Ten record
Southeastern = 6/13
Big 12 = 4/12
West Coast = 3/10
Atlantic Coast = 3/15
Big East = 2/9
5 other conferences have 1 team each in the top 40:
Big West = 1/9 (Cal State Northridge @ 53 and UC Irvine @ 63)
Atlantic 10 = 1/9
C-USA = 1/13
Mid-American [MAC] = 1/12
Mountain West = 1/11
Obviously, there are many ways you can interpret the RPI, but the only way that matters is LOOKING GOOD. And for the Bows, that they are …but got to keep looking over their shoulders and as a team got to keep looking after each other.

Coach Dave knew the Texas team was returning a solid team, BUT he also knew what he was going to return with. And I suspect that he wanted to take his chances on night #1 with out giving Texas scouting time by playing in front of them 2 times before facing them. I’m sure the Texas coaches would have ‘adjusted’ their rotations and lineups earlier and been more prepared with some lead time. But gamble paid off and will pay off in RPI all the way to end. Even San Diego is paying off. So Coach Dave scheduled right and won an early gamble. Yeah, he’s crazy…. Crazy like a fox! He’s not the winningest coach in Women’s volleyball by chance but by skill and knowing his team’s chances. Go Wahine!

Most of these shows are a rehash of the previous week.
One thing that stuck in my mind was Shoji had a meeting with the other coaches,thinks they are becoming too easy to scout and they will be trying out some new stuff and adding new wrinkles but it doesn’t involve changing player positions.

Glad to hear Shoji is capitalyzing that he currently have and changing things up to add more depth on their offense.
#7 I think it might be double quick attacks when Mita or Tayler set from backrow rotatition or X involving middle and backrow attacking same side probably with Ashley, Tai, or Ginger because Em hits so regularly out of bacrow it wouldn’t be unexpected. But whatever it is I’m very confident this group is more than capable of executing it both athletically and with positive results. Really looking forward to more than high outside and slides. We got the players, we need the diversity and BW competition only offers limited resistance, challenge team to do more and sharpen and expand options before NCAAs. Go Wahine!

This is the time of year that they usually add a few wrinkles. But it is true that UH is the easiest to scout in the country given the amount of media coverage of the team and the quality of the broadcasts by OCSports.

5. Grammy we addressed the issue of how that tournament schedule was established back in August. It was not a matter of Texas and Hawaii playing the first night to avoid Texas scouting Hawaii.
Texas was leaving early Sunday morning so they had to play once on Friday, twice on Saturday.
Hawaii did not want to play Texas and San Diego on consecutive nights.
so the only way it could happen was for Texas and UH to play Friday.
Re: Shoji & RPI … I remember just a few years ago when bloggers were screaming OFF WITH HIS HEAD when the season’s first RPI was released. Wahine fan after fan complained that Shoji — who back in the day always touted the AVCA Polls as the main validation for hosting Rounds 1-2 –needed to learn how to schedule the non-conference season to incorporate tricks of the RPI trade. Obviously the complaints did not fall on deaf ears.

Question to Cindy or to anyone who has access to NCAA archives: Is the No. 3 RPI of the current season the highest “first RPI of the season” that the Bows has ever achieved?
Thursday Side Out (In the ‘Who Cares’ Department) : Minnesota — picked to finished 2nd to Penn State — travels to the Lions den today to see if they can send a message to the rest of the Big Ten that they are contenders and not pretenders to the throne.
Re: Call the Coach (from the Not for Reason Blog “Comment” Section). Personally, did not catch the broadcast.
Question #1 Why does Manu-Olevao start over Kastl? Answer: Tai is more versatile and athletic. Kastl has accepted her role on the team.
Question #2 What is the role of Robin Ah Mow? Answer: Obviously she works with the setters. She also works with the middles and right-side hitters. She assists with administration as well as coaching. She is known for her “bark,” which is far worse than her bite. She is known to bark at Coach Shoji too (I’m sure he said that with a smile).
Question #3 Will Nikki Taylor be playing basketball? Answer: Definitely not. By the way she is closer to 6’4″ rather than her listed height of 6’3″.
Question #4 What things will the Bows be working on in the future? Answer: Hawaii has been too easy to scout and has been pretty predictable. Hawaii will be working on some new wrinkles in its offense and defense to make it more difficult for opponents to prepare for the team.
Question #5 What is Shoji”s relationship with Brian Gimmilaro? Answer: They respect and do talk with each other. Brian works his teams hard. They are in the same boat and have common interests—members of a mid-major, non-BCS conference that lack the financial resources of major conference schools.
Miscellany comments: Some Wahine fans could not attend the Irvine match because it was sold out. Probably over half of the fans were from Hawaii. Emily Hartong, as far as Shoji knows, has never skipped a class in her college career.
i’m beginning to see why olevao is starting over kastl. the “versatility” comment from shoji is right. over the course of the season, taylor is taking more and more swings from the left (where she is seemingly very effective), even as she continues to lineup as the opposite. this would shift the left-side hitter who is in the front row (olevao) to the right side. and olevao appears to be more comfortable hitting on the right than kastl is. and olevao also appears to be a better blocker (on either pin) than kastl. having olevao and taylor both in the lineup allows both of them to take swings from either the right or left, depending on matchups that the coaches maybe want to take advantage of … without too much of a drop off.
the key to olevao staying in the lineup (imo) will be if her passing holds up, and her hitting doesn’t tank. she’s otherwise a solid blocker, and back row defender. her blocking especially has been solid the last couple matches.

Watching Minnesota at PSU now, Minnesota continue to have a lackluster performance right where they left off against Nebraska. They are so much better offensively but their defense is not there with the exception of blocking.
Early on set 1 PSU getting a lot of easy kills from Minnesota’s back row players
Minnesota figured out how overrated PSU is and tightened up their defense. Took set 2 and now leading set 3.
Wahine ought to peek at Big 10’s play book.
Really impressed oh how smart their hitters are on when to hit hard and when to ding. Would benefit the Wahine greatly comes tournament time.

I do try and read and understand all of tour psts as I respect you highly as an authoritative and knowledgeable insider in the Wahine universe. Just get excited occasionally and mixed up on the totality of the blog, Again, my fault and not meant to dismiss you in ant way, you are my favorite and most anticipated source of all things Rainbow Wahine Volletball. The RPI is a relatively new tool being used by the selection committee.
Shoji has traditionally tried to schedule as tough as he can but it is also a matter of who is willing to come here. just as with recruiting, just because you want someone (Player or Team) doesn’t mean they’re going to commit.
Shoji has never ‘touted’ the AVCA polls as validation of hosting; he has said that they usually are truer to who the top teams in the country are than some computer, which has begun to take on a BCS-bias (IMHO). However, he has changed his mind about poll saying the coaches are now voting in their best interests and protecting ‘their conferences’ now that the poll will be considered as part of the criteria.
The RPI wasn’t always as transparent as it is now. But I believe No. 3 is about the highest UH has ever been to start.
Re: 25 That parts of the federal government is shut down is no fault of mine. That parts of another individual’s memory is shut down is no concern of mine. I stand by what I said, except (for the record) no Red Queen screamed off with his head. It was just an off-hand remark I made that in retrospect makes no sense. A better quote would have been, “It gets curiouser and curiouser.” (IMHO.)
Found it interesting that the Star-Ad’s Billy Hull ran with the story about two Hawaii frosh on the undefeated Missouri team. I mentioned the same Missouri team starting 2 Hawaii frosh at least a week ago (if not 2 weeks ago) on this same blog. But kudos to Billy Hull for the article in Wednesday’s (10/9/13) Star-Ad. Someone thought highly enough of this story to highlight it on the front page.
And thanks again to Ann Miller for alerting everyone to the date of the release of the season’s first RPI. Really look forward to reading her profiles of the 3 seniors she hasn’t yet covered.

We (the sports department) are on numerous SID mailing lists and they are always alerting us to how athletes from Hawaii are doing at mainland colleges. His Hawaii Grown weekly.
As for the RPI. it had been mentioned that it usually was released the first Monday of October. which was before Ann mentioned it in her story
As for off-hand remarks, get too many of them to try to interpret beyond what it is written.

OrbitalRipZ — i’m not sure your criticism is a valid one (that Shoji had issues scheduling with an eye towards the RPI). it was one season (last year) when Hawaii did not have a high enough RPI to be seeded (and ultimately, Hawaii was close and just on the bubble last year). But in Hawaii’s history — and even in recent history with the RPI being used more heavily by the selection committee — hawaii has always been seeded when they’ve made the tournament. last year was an anomaly when the schedule just didn’t work out as successful (from an RPI standpoint). i think, for the most part, shoji has been pretty good and putting together an RPI-favorable schedule.
what Shoji may say publicly about the AVCA ranking of his teams (to hype up the issue in the media) … versus what he actually does behind the scenes in putting together a scheduling that has nearly always given them a good enough RPI to be seeded … well, those are two separate things. (most folks would more readily and easily what a voters’ poll is, than what the RPI is…)

Watched CSUN beat LBSU 3-1 at CSUN, pretty good blocking team,out blocked LBSU 15-6.
They sure don’t draw a lot of fans.Only 613 at tonight’s match against LBSU.
CS Northridge beat Long Beach State to remain unbeaten in the Big West at 4-0. LBS is 1-3. San Diego Swept the San Francisco Dons as expected, 16, 12, 22. UC Irvine and UC Davis are tied at 2 sets apiece. All tied in the fifth at 6.
Wahine have to two real tough games this week, however, they will 3-0 both matches – that’s just a prediction. Go Wahine and in your wake a “Rainbow” shines

So far not a bad week . Only loss was Santa Clara’s loss to BYU but this weekend brings a loaded schedule.

Yes, really. it was mentioned here last month that it would be out beginning of october when someone asked me when. and I thought it would be a Monday since that’s when it has been released.
