Aloha to Ann Miller
Annie’s last day is tomorrow, Jan. 31. She has been an outstanding journalist and wonderful colleague since I came to Hawaii in 1981. She started at the Advertiser the year before in 1980.
She has left her mark with her in-depth coverage for over three decades, especially Wahine volleyball and basketball, as well as local tennis, golf and high school sports.
I never considered her a rival because of our different news cycles for most of our careers, she with the morning and me with the afternoon paper. She is a sports journalist who is respected and admired for her integrity in our craft, here, nationally and internationally. I will miss her and her kindness. We spent many a road trip together, some memorable others not so much. If you ever run into her, ask about the bat (animal) in her room during a road trip with UH men’s volleyball.

I understand that you’re originally from the east coast (Conn.?), maybe. What a HUMONGOUS cultural shock to be now in Hawai’i. Thanks for giving your best to the islanders from the word “go” in spite of it all. I’ve ALWAYS enjoyed your thoughtful/professional journalism from the Honolulu Advertiser (the newspaper to which I was always partial), to today’s Star-Advertiser.

Ann Miller hooked me forever with her line in the unforgetable story about Tadd Fujikawa’s run at the Sony Open: “Do you believe in Menehunes?” I remember advising a foreign student who was looking for a model of good writing to read the sports sections of the local papers, because we had some really good writers, of which Ann was definitely one. I will miss seeing her byline and reading her words. Thank you, Ann, for your contributions to helping sports come to life for the reading public in Hawaii.
You will truly be missed. I can only offer a sincere wish for a happy next chapter in the life of Ann Miller.

1. no Ann is from California, grew up in the Bay Area, played collegiate softball at San Francisco State, worked at the Oakland Trib before coming to Hawaii.
7. CA, CT. San Fran is very cool, too. I don’t know why I’d thought east coast, but I’d guess HI still took some getting used to nevertheless. I recall reading her origins somewhere ..why?…where??…I can’t tell you.
Also, I don’t suppose that the road trip in the 80s would’ve been the same one in which some wacko attempted to open up the plane’s pressurized escape door?
I’d hope that HI’s sports journalists weren’t on that same flight.

No mens volleyball thread? It’s really time for coaches to give One of the freshmen a chance, Olsen again not getting it done, lowest hitting percentage on the team by far and his passing aint all that.
I agree. Why is Wade not playing Fey? Did he not prove himself with the LBSU game? They are wasting Fey’s freshman year if he is only going to serve. It’s frustrating to see Olsen play game after game after game with so many errors. Doesn’t make sense.
Frustrating thing is UH outsides played horrible as did the middle ( UH really needs West back asap) but they still had a shot to win this one, ugh.
Well, ther is a lot of games they could have won. But nevertheless, all the losses are just the same. Really hope they don’t come back 5-6.

Don’t know why you’d think East Coast
and don’t remember about the flight where someone tired to open the door. I rarely was on the same flight with the UH teams I covered. MVB, WVB, MBK, WBK and baseball.
8. continuing on adjusting to Hawaii. I think that when you’re young and single it is much easier. She played tennis and golfed so she got to make friends in those circles, also with her church.
I was lucky to get involved with the running and paddling groups, as well as hula.
The hardest thing for those in our profession is the hours we keep. Outside of newspaper folks, there are very few people that have the sort of night hours we have.
