A day late but … Wahine picked to win Big West
Finally back in Hawaii. Been a long two weeks but a good trip. Yesterday was a 21-hour day. And for those of you who are my FB friends, no, I didn’t take the $150 upgrade to first.
Anyway from the BWC. Looks like they allowed coaches to vote for their own team.
For the second straight year the University of Hawai‘i has been selected as the Big West Conference’s top pick in the women’s volleyball preseason poll, as selected unanimously by the nine league coaches.
In their first year back in the Big West after a 16-year hiatus, the ‘Bows ran the table with a perfect 18-0 league mark in 2012 to capture its sixth Big West title and 18th straight overall. The unblemished record was the first perfect season in Big West play since UC Santa Barbara posted an identical record in 2002.
UH kicks off the season against defending national champion Texas on Aug. 30 at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Also on the horizon is a milestone win for head coach Dave Shoji who, with four more victories, will become the winningest coach in Division I women’s volleyball history.

Welcome back Cindy, hope you had a good rest. Only days away from the start of the season, and like myself i’m sure there’s a lot of people out there that’s been waiting for this day to come. Anyway, can’t wait till the season starts, and your blog will have lots of intresting comments, good or bad.
Welcome back cindy! Do u know if anymore late transfer had come in??
Hello Cindy, welcome home. Hope you’re fully recovered and ready for the busy 4 month stretch. Have a few questions and if and when you do find out could you post them pls. Firstly, pertaining to practice times and place and if they’re open or closed? And what day is media day. I believe both you and Ann are covering the practices. Thanks.
Hi Cindy, welcome back, and I am back on this blog again this year. Hoping to behave myself this time. But that is only subject to how the Wahines do, of course. Since you are so well rested now, expecting update on all the Wahine practices. No reason why you should miss any of them. Unless, of course, your boss has different ideas for you, hope not.
Aloha ka kou, Cindy. Hope all’s well with you and yours. Just to let fellow Wahine fans that Emily Hartong is on Leahey and Leahey tonight. Tune in.
Hartong’s gonna be on Leahey & Leahey tonight on PBS at 7:30
thank you. was just about to post that about Hartong. … See new thread
2. no transfers that I know of. But you never know who will show up Saturday. Shoji had said last month he wasn’t bringing anyone in. 18 already on the roster. Shoji doesn’t like to carry more than that … although they did have 20 last season, including the redshirts.
4. Ann and I again will be splitting practices. she is taking mornings. i will be there in the afternoons. I won’t be at all the practices.
3. Mauna, yes, Ann and I are covering again and splitting the practices. Easier for her to take mornings, I’ll do the 2nd.
I guess they’re considering the time after Saturday’s first practice as ‘media day’ since TV, radio and print have been alerted.
as for open/closed … practices tend to be closed. They are in Gym I and really not conducive for spectators. no seating, not much room to sit on the baselines.
Thank you for the info Cindy. I’ve been to practices before at gym1, just wondering what the times are, can’t recall exactly last Fall’s, senior moments.
Glad to have your return and the first week of build up with #1 spot. Only means Wahine are in gunsights of everyone in BW again, so what else is new? Don’t forsee any major let downs and hope no injuries especially to middles. Can’t wait for opening night already a challenging competitive opponent. And Coach Dave ascending to the top of the women’s volleyball heap passing his buddy, Andy, is inevitable. Don’t want anymore drama and tension in the gym and arena like last year. Hope Ginger gets more court time and the newcomers contribute early and often. Go Wahine!
