Hawaii 3, CSU Fullerton 0

Match starting in about 45. Mostly Hawaii fans here. Free parking too on weekends, what a concept. Like how they’re redone the floor with orange palm trees.

Had lunch with former UH AD Jim Donovon, now the Fullerton AD. Nice to catch up with him.

Don’t forget that you can catch the match on ESPN3 www.espn.go.com

  34. jmy November 1, 2014 6:00 pm

Beach beat Matadors…Kinda knew they would…

  35. Kazu November 1, 2014 6:01 pm

Good going Wahine. Don’t look like CSUN will be to much help to the Wahine.
Can’t wait to next week end.

  36. jmy November 1, 2014 6:16 pm

For those who have been saying that CSU is overrated, I guess you were right…UNLV beat them in four…

  37. LanaiBoy November 1, 2014 6:34 pm

    33. According to Kathy Gregory, Shoji called time out to get more reserves in. She said that getting players into the game even only for the last two points is great for team morale. I agree with her

  38. Joann November 1, 2014 7:49 pm

Let’s hope Dave doesn’t retire at the end of this year. Otherwise, UH is going to be looking for a football, basketball and volleyball coach. Ouch!!!

  39. 'ohanaInBellingham November 1, 2014 7:54 pm

I hope that Olivia gets the nomination and nod for the BWC PotW.

  40. Cindy Luis November 1, 2014 8:32 pm

He did call a timeout, in part because of all the subs, but it was more to avoid being given a yellow card for delay of game. He wanted to make sure everyone knew where they were in the rotation because they could have easily been out of rotation when he used a different sub pattern.

  41. Kazu November 1, 2014 8:37 pm

    38. My guess is there’s some coaches out there waiting for Shoji to retire so they can apply for that position.

  42. OrbitalRipZ November 1, 2014 8:43 pm

So UH beat a team with a rpi 193, which is one spot weaker than Kent State (192) of the Mid-American Conf. but one stronger than Chicago (194) of the Horizon Conf. Can’t see this road win helping the Wahine’s NCAA rpi. But I do think the 3-2 win over UCI (rpi 106) will be factored in negatively in systems which take into account sets won and loss — such as Pablo’s?

BTW: Glad to hear Coach imply (to my way of thinking) that his team’s goal right now is to win 1 of the 33 at-large bids. LBSU is in the driver’s seat to secure 1 of the 31 automatics, and there’s no way the NCAA Selection Committee is going to award more than 1 — if even 1 — at-large to the Big West this year . . . especially after last year’s tournament, in which none of the 3 Big West reps made it out of their respective sub-regionals.

Sure there’s still hope that LBSU will be upset along their merry way, and the automatic berth could still go to the Rainbows. About as much hope as Pele changing her mind and — just before running over Pahoa Village — stopping dead in her tracks.

    Go Bows! Be gone Pele!

  43. blunite November 1, 2014 10:00 pm

@OrbitalRipZ: this is why winning away from home is so vital, to impress the NCAA selection committee. Hawaii’s travel schedule may well be the cause of their slow starts (based upon last year’s 3 losses on the road and this year’s 2 losses.) Even if Hawaii wins out and receives an invitation they will be sent away to play. If Hawaii uses the same travel schedule the results may be the same.

  44. Cindy Luis November 2, 2014 1:52 pm

    43. Do not understand the obsession with the travel schedule. This is how they’ve done it for 30-plus years. Sometimes they take a redeye, sometimes they take the afternoon flight that gets in around 10 p.m. As someone pointed out, no on was complaining when Hawaii was winning all those road matches all these years.
The travel is pretty tame in the Big West compared to what it was in the WAC and they had to go to Ruston, LA.
Besides, Hawaii’s been having slow starts when playing at home. can’t blame the travel for that.

  45. Cindy Luis November 2, 2014 1:55 pm

    42. Shoji has said all season the goal is to make the tournament. He is being realistic when looking at the standings and seeing that it will be tough to catch The Beach. And he has long said that they have to control what they can control, which is winning. His comment about losing to UCI was, with their RPI of 106 in this week, it would be considered a bad loss and UH’s lower RPI could knock them out of an at-large bid

  46. High N Wide November 2, 2014 5:50 pm

Ahh… Kathy Gregory. Just love how she moderates these matches for ESPN.
They need to give her more exposer. Her comments as a former player and
veteran coach are sooo… on point!

  47. Cindy Luis November 3, 2014 9:02 am

She was pretty funny this past weekend. She’s enjoying her ‘retirement’ I think she tells it like it is and was very brutally honest on and off camera.
