U.S. drops VNL match to Brazil in 5

The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three starters with Hawaii ties in the lineup, remained undefeated in FIVB Volleyball Nations League play on Saturday with a sweep of Korea in Goiania, Brazil.

Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) set the Americans to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-11 victory. Also starting were middle Taylor Averill (University of Hawaii) and libero Erik Shoji (Punahou).

The U.S. (5-0) concludes the second round of pool play against Brazil (4-1) today.

Christensen, who gave way to Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) in Friday’s five-set win over Japan, had the U.S. hitting .717. Averill added five kills and a block.

“I thought Korea had a great strategy,” Averill said. “They dug the ball really well and put a lot of pressure on us.”

I didn’t think I would ever admit this but I am really going to miss Jim Leahey. He made the wrong call many times but he did it with conviction!

Ron everybody ages. He went as long as he could doing something he loved and was meant to do. In his prime he made a ton of great calls and any wrong calls were a rarity.

Jim Leahey is a legend. He could have made nationally if he wanted to.

Good news for Annie Mitchem, who will continue playing in Italian Serie 1A next season for Scandicci following a successful rookie season with Lardini Filottrano, where she was their top attacker, scoring 322 points in 77 sets at OH.

Last year’s Scandicci team included setter Lauren Carlini & 18-year old Swedish phenom Isabelle Haak.
