Behind a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds from junior Samuta Avea and an effective debut for freshman Bernardo da Silva, the Hawaii men’s basketball team was victorious in its 2019-20 season opener over Florida A&M, 65-52 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Da Silva, a 6-foot-9 Brazilian who played prep ball at the Wasatch Academy in Utah, scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had an emphatic pair of blocked shots for UH.

UH started fast under acting head coach Chris Gerlufsen and led by 20-plus-points late, though the Rattlers (0-2) narrowed the final margin with a late run.
