FINAL: Hawaii (2-0) rallies to win in five sets for the second straight night to open the season, 26-28, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12 over St. John’s (0-2).

——————
Full disclosure. Thank you to our Brian McInnis for finishing up Set 5 when I was writing for breaking and print edition. As many as you saw, live stats was down from the TTO in Set 1. This is a software problem with a new national stats program.
Set 5

10:16: UH gets it done on match point No. 2, as St. John’s floats a serve into the net. Anticlimactic, but the Rainbow Wahine (2-0) will take it, 15-12.
10:15: WHOA X2. Jolie Rasmussen gets in on the block party, solo style. Match point.
10:14: WHOA. freshmen Riley Wagoner and Tiffany Westerberg combine on a block and it’s a 13-11 advantage.
10:14: Freshman Hanna Hellvig with a well-placed back-row attack and the Wahine go back up 12-11.
10:12: Riley Wagoner with an error into the net and UH calls timeout with it knotted up at 11.
10:10: Amber Igiede with a putdown kill straight down … apparently St. John’s is challenging a net violation. Wow, St. John’s wins the challenge and it’s within 11-10. Huge swing there.
10:08: Timeout No. 2 called by St. John’s as the Wahine throw a successful double block and take an 11-8 advantage.
10:07: UH rallies to go up 10-8 on a Jolie Rasmussen flicked kill followed by an attack error for the Red Storm immediately after their timeout.
10:06: It’s been a tightly played fifth set, with the key play in the first handful of points an apparent point for UH after Norene Iosia pulled off a pancake dig, followed by a Kirsten Sibley kill. But replay showed the ball was down and the point was given to St. John’s. The Red Storm were the first to reach 8 points, at the 8-7 changeover.

Set 3: Red Storm take 2-1 lead with a 25-23 victory.

9:19: St. John’s pulls it out despite not having a setter on the floor, having run out of subs. Wahine had closed to 24-23 on a block by Rasmussen and Igiede.
9:13: St. John’s has come out of the timeout with a 4-0 run. It’s 22-20. TO UH. All started with Iosia’s service error.

8:55: St. John’s converting on some off plays. It’s 10-8. TO UH.
8:53: so call overturned It’s 7-7.
8:51: Hawaii up 8-6. St. John’s challenging the call of a net violation. if there is not net violation I would suggest that Ah Mow challenge that there was a touch on Hellvig’s attack.
Set 2: Hawaii wins 25-20
8:38: Norene Iosia’s ace ends it 25-20.
8:32: Hawaii’s 21-14 lead now cut to 21-17. TO UH.

8:16. Hawaii up 13-11. But St. John’s challenging whether Alexakou’s attack was in. challenge fails.
8:14: It’s 10-10. Tiffany Westerberg has replaced Sky Williams at one middle. Amber Igiede at the other
Set 1: St. John’s wins it 28-26
8:00: Efrosini Alexakou from the back row, ends it on the Red Storm’s third set point. Hawaii had set point at 26-25 but gave up a 3-0 run.
7:57: Yes live stats down.
7:54: Brooke Van Sickle serves long. At 23-21 TO Hawaii.
7:52: St. John’s 22-19 lead now 22-21. TO Red Storm.
7:50: After Jolie Rasmussen got aced, libero Rika Okino in.
7:47: St. John’s on a 3-0 run, tying it at 17 on a service overpass. TO Hawaii.
7:43: Brooke Van Sickle tools the block, UH up 17-14. TO St. John’s
7;40: Hawaii up 15-13 at the TTO on the first block of the match Riley Wagoner-Amber Igiede on Efrosini Alexakou.
7:37: Hawaii going with the 6-2. Norene Iosia back in.
7:35: Hawaii challenging whether there was a touch on Hanna Hellvig’s attack. Call overturned. Hawaii up 10-9.
7:32: Rika Okino serving so they are going with a libero to serve But Riley Wagoner comes back in.
Hawaii starting
Brooke Van Sickle, Amber Igiede, Riley Wagoner, Norene Iosia, Rika Okino (not sure if she’ll be used at libero), Hanna Hellvig and Jolie Rasmussen.

Looking at a 7:25-ish start for Hawaii-St. John’s
McKenna Ross not in the arena, they had anticipated she’d be out for the weekend.
Braelyn Akana on the bench, not suited up, could be cleared for Sunday. Day-to-day
_____
Hawaii-St. John’s scheduled for 7 p.m.
Don’t see that happening
It’s 6:20 and Washington-San Diego early in Set 4. If it goes five, it won’t be over until close to 7
Was surprised they didn’t start this at 4.

That fourth set between Marquette-BYU was tied at 10…BYU coach took a time out down
    12-23…smh…

  2. H-Man August 31, 2019 7:09 pm

Hoping McKenna heals quickly. Need to see her on the court.

Reminder: as our style, updating in main box.

Live stats are not working again.

  5. z August 31, 2019 8:30 pm

    Rika doing a nice job.

  6. z August 31, 2019 8:30 pm

    Stats stuck.

  7. mileHIwarrior August 31, 2019 9:50 pm

Doesn’t look like the Big West streaming is working too. Only showing link to the Washington game.

  8. Maverick August 31, 2019 9:54 pm

Can someone on the mainland who is watching this match copy the URL and paste it here? It should have “Live” and a number (probably 4 digits) in the URL. I lost connection and don’t see the match on the site, so I’m trying to get a work-around.

  9. HawaiiMongoose August 31, 2019 10:18 pm

Whew! Talk about a battle of attrition. Gritty win for the Wahine!

  10. Mikayla August 31, 2019 10:23 pm

Jolie might have hurt her ankle a little as she was being helped by Brooke.

  11. H-Man August 31, 2019 10:41 pm

Great win for Wahine that didn’t have their best stuff tonight. Passing was quite a bit off. I was happy coach inserted Kirsten Sibley and she delivered. Same for Rika Okino. The young’uns show a lot of moxie. Westerberg surprised me with a quick arm in middle.

  12. z August 31, 2019 11:05 pm

Amazing. Happy they got the win.

  13. Cindy Luis August 31, 2019 11:20 pm

Thanks all for your patience. I know the stats were down. sounds like live stream had its issues.
Thought Sibley came in and did well. She has height and it was a good sub for Van Sickle.
Thought Okino did well and stabilized some of the passing. I think fatigue had something to do with the passing breakdown.

  14. tongo August 31, 2019 11:27 pm

Agree with H-man. I would go further and say that they should have put Kirsten much much earlier as Brooke clearly did not have the goods – both mentally and physically. Rika was great. At the end of the day, it was the steady play of these freshmen who made it happen. Was so very happy to see Kirsten get in and play solid.

  15. greenthumb August 31, 2019 11:41 pm

10, saw that with Jolie, but read it as a repeat of the leg cramps of opening night. Either way, hoping it’s a brief issue.

Tonight seemed kind of like the middle piece of a three-part series, some slow and rough parts. But overall, the players kept trying, and really they look pretty cohesive, considering how little time they’ve had together as a team. I’m hoping the mental focus and perspective Hanna Hellvig discussed in the postgame show will be dialed in for tomorrow’s match against UW. That is definitely a winnable match for us, with focus, concentration and inner stillness.

This early in the season, as they build reps together, they benefit from a libero so that setters can continue to work on building connections with the hitters. But I really like that Coach tried out a no-libero look right from the start, showing the players that she thinks they can achieve a full array of on-court attack.

I am sorry to leave this here but a few people in my section were really annoyed at a fan constantly criticizing the players during the game, play by play. I know s/he reads here. All of us pay entrance fees and would like to enjoy the game. These “fans” criticize whether we are doing well or not. Tonight they left right after St. John’s net ball–almost as if they were sorry we won. They felt we did not deserve to win. This really interferes with my enjoyment of the game and quite a few of us feel this way. How would you deal with it? What s/he is saying is not constructive. As I said, I want to enjoy the game and don’t know how to communicate my displeasure with the negative commentary. They have actually said, “they make me sick” and walked out of a game once that we actually ended up winning…Yaaaay.

My take away from tonight is that our team is scrappy and gritty. They have not been together for a long time and, at least last night, we upset a ranked team.

  17. Warriorfan September 1, 2019 12:18 am

I don’t think Sibley belongs in the backrow, when she is in.
Will Akana and Ross suit up tomorrow?

  18. vballfan September 1, 2019 1:30 am

    16. We, too, suffer from listening to non-stop commentary from an individual in our section. It is highly irritating and I often wonder if this person is just trying to show off his/her knowledge of the game. Nothing to do about it.

  19. islandman September 1, 2019 7:53 am

    15. Hanna speaks English so well. They must speak it a lot in Sweden.
    17. The stats say Akana played in the 2nd set and had 1 solo block.
This is a killer for all the players to play 3 days in a row and the Wahine had to play 5 sets each in the first two days.

  20. uhfan September 1, 2019 8:25 am

Can UH get their crap together for live stats and streaming today because having both not working in the middle of the game last night was ridiculous

  21. z September 1, 2019 9:08 am

I thought that Wagoner did a really nice job. She doesn’t get much notice so I thought I’d mention it.

  22. Kahuna September 1, 2019 9:48 am

I am extremely impressed with the composure of these young freshmen. When the game get tight and things don’t go well, they just keep fighting and continue to compete. A lot of young players would clam up or go into some kind of funk. These girls were rock solid.

Not only they displayed great physical skills but also big time mental toughness. Both USD and St. John were experiences teams while UH was put together only a few weeks ago.

    Great Job Ladies!!!!

  23. rabbit ears September 1, 2019 10:12 am

16 and 18. We suffer from the same thing we are in lower level section 18.
The negative stuff about our own players

  24. Brandon September 1, 2019 11:06 am

Hawaii still has not updated any type of box score for last nights match. Usually they are on top of these things, but really they have not been these past couple matches

  25. islandman September 1, 2019 12:06 pm

20 and 24… Cindy wrote in the top part of this page this regarding live stats. It also affects the box scores:
” As many as you saw, live stats was down from the TTO in Set 1. This is a software problem with a new national stats program.”
    —————————————————————————————————-
    24. There were these stats posted earlier on the hawaiiathletics website:
    https://hawaiiathletics.com/documents/2019/9/1//UH_SJU_book.pdf

  26. tongo September 1, 2019 12:15 pm

21 – I agree. Wagoner is really skilled with high VBIQ. She is going to be one of the cornerstone of the program.

  27. Cindy Luis September 1, 2019 3:02 pm

    https://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=50874
new thread up for Sunday with SJ-USD links and scores

    couple of comments
    24. They were here until 3 a.m. trying to get the box scoreIt’s not that UH is not getting its act together. The new stats program is having a lot of problems. This is an NCAA-approved program but nationally already the Big Ten said they are not going to use it, as are several other programs saying so. It’s not mandated but I would not be surprised if UH drops it and goes back to what they were using.
    +++++
    17. Sibley went in as a blocking sub for Van Sickle. Agree she is not a great back row player but she does give them an attack option from 3-meters. Eventually was subbed out for Okino (L)
Not sure if Akana and/or Ross will suit up. Ross wasn’t even in the arena Saturday but I saw her earlier today so at least she was well enough to go to pregame meal.
    ++++
    18. In Sweden, English is considered a core subject, along with Swedish and math.
    ++++
    26. I wrote somewhere that Ah Mow said Wagoner has the highest
    VIQ she’s seen.
Agree that the freshmen are very impressive.
