Wahine picked No. 2 in BWC preseason poll

UH coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, seen here yelling encouragement to her players against BYU in 2017, had her Rainbow Wahine picked second in the Big West preseason poll on Tuesday. / 2017 HSA photo by Bruce Asato.

Not much of a surprise … other than UH getting four first-place votes out of the nine. Hawaii was picked second behind defending champion Cal Poly.

The Mustangs received 77 points and five first-place votes, while Hawaii secured the remaining four first-place votes and 75 total points.

2018 Big West Women’s Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll
1. Cal Poly (5) 77
2. Hawaii (4) 75
3. UC Irvine 62
4. Long Beach State 48
5. UC Santa Barbara 45
6. UC Davis 38
7. CSUN 30
8. UC Riverside 18
9. Cal State Fullerton 12

The Wahine open two-a-day practices tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6 a.m.

This is the first time since 2012 when the Rainbow Wahine rejoined the Big West that they were not picked to finish in first place in the preseason poll. The last time UH was not voted as the preseason favorite was in 1995 when the ‘Bows were picked to finish second with Pacific chosen to finish in first place.

UH returns 10 letterwinners and one redshirt. The Wahine also have three senior transfers and two freshmen. Back are two all-conference first-teamers, senior outside hitter McKenna Granato and junior setter Norene Iosia.

With one year under their belt, the veterans will be in better shape and sharper in their skills . Counting on this year’s team to buy into the “culture” Coach Robyn is trying to instill. Part of tbat culture is that it is an awesome “priviledge” to play in a Wahine uniform and knowing
what it takes to compete at the highest level every match. I think we may in for a great surprise and awakening this season! I hope! Ready or not, here comes the 2018 University of Hawaii Womens Volleyball Squad!

    Hmmm.

Interesting coaches’ poll, I thought, thinking that Cal Poly would have more first-place votes than just 5 with all the fire power coming back. … Hawai’I has many pukkahs to fill and really didn’t have a stellar recruiting coup. For them to make the tournament would really be an accomplishment this year. I think we have to finish 15-1 in conference, to get that invite ..

Great to see you back Cindy! Can’t wait for the season to get started! So, what is your prognosis for this season?
    GO BOWS!
