Sunday check-in: Horseshoes, et al

Dropped by SandBows fundraiser at The Les. They had over 120 teams participating. Indoor team was there to support, along with the coaches.
Nothing definite on Greeley yet. They’ll know more on Monday.

Caught up with Kanani Danielson and Liz Ka’aihue (pictured). Kanani just finished her JV season at Punahou and is coaching at Spike and Serve.

Watched the end of the finals at Queen’s from the Governor’s Box at Les Murakami with Hall and others. Napoleon looked impressive. She’s related to a former Wahine but Hall couldn’t remember who. Might be Teisa Fotu but will have to check.
coaches were surprised about the results but pleased about their freshmen in the finals.

Am at Wahine basketball so might not get to questions until later.

According to trojansc on Volleytalk, Hawaii will possibly be the last team in the tournament.

“Hawaii is the last team in the tournament. I’m not impressed with just one top 50 victory, even though it is a solid top-25 victory. We have seen precedent to leave a team out like this. The only reason Hawaii is my last team in right now because I think the bubble is just awfully weak this year. There are several bubble teams that cannot boast a top-25 victory, and many with just two top-50 victories. It will be a long week of waiting, the Wahine should be very nervous on Sunday. No guarantee that I keep them here either, things may change throughout the week. Very important to keep an eye on Ohio State, the SEC and the MVC/Big East Tournaments.”

No need be nervous. If the team start to worry about stuff they cannot control it will drive them batty. Just approach the next week like any other week and prepare the best they can.

If we go….then we go. If not…then we get ready for next year.

I really liked what I saw from the two freshmen today they were the most impressive players on the beach
and that’s saying a lot because Homayun and Zalopany are solid cagey veterans. The future is looking bright for the beach bows.

I’d like to see pairs of Martin/Schucht, Mags/Weaver, Homayun/Monkhouse, Ozee/Zalopany and Kan/Napoleon and maybe grad transfer Fitterer will find a spot on one of the pairs, they are very deep.

Any news on the Beach schedule?

I agree mostly with your pairings

    These are my predictions:
    1) Maglio/Weaver
    2) Martin/Schucht
    3) Homayun/Kan
    4) Zalopany/Fitterer
    5) Ozee/Napoleon
    6) Monkhouse/Luyties

It would also be great if Huddleston could crack the lineup, most likely with Ozee (much like last year).

Maglio will not be with Weaver this season and not at number 1. Weaver is not as strong as some others. She’s not quite a “big” and not quite a “small”, so it will be interesting where she fits. Also, Hall likes to change up the pairing (usually but not always) from year to year. So, likely will not see Homayun and Kan or Ozee/Zap again.

Kan and Napoleon could make an interesting pairing…wasn’t sure where Kan would fit this season as again she is a “small” but doesn’t seem to gel with a “big” (though she did play a summer tournament with Ozee but were beat by Maglio and Huddleston so not sure if Hall would pair together or not.

They are deep this year and the pairings crucial. It will be interesting if Hall will stick with early season pairings or be open to Maglio getting her beach legs under her before he solidifies pairs. Last year they were pretty much set before Mags and Iosia came over and cracked the line-up.

I’d like to Maglio and Schucht given a chance at number one..they could interchange one or two until they see who sticks and 3 and 4 and 5 or 6 again to see what placement.

I think Hall has Maglio, Martin, Monkhouse, Ozee, Fitterer, Weaver in the mix along with Schucht, Homayun, Kan, Napolean, Luyties and Zalopany.

Huddleston on the bubble…maybe redshirt a couple freshmen.

Would also like to see Huddleston in line up but I believe she has had some injuries- hopefully she will be healthier this year and fit in somewhere.

I thought mags/weaver got in a groove at the end of the season last season and in the ncaa tournament they were the best pair.
Thought maybe some continuity from last season would be a good thing , usc/ucla seem to have pairs that are together for more than 2/3 seasons.

    Wahine 39 in latest rpi
If things go well for them this week they could climb as high as 35/36.
    Looks very good.

Hope coach Robyn brings in a stud foreign player and some stud transfers to replace the seniors and the wahine fan base never talks about that useless nivc tournament again.

new thread up with RPI link
still some matches to be played which will affect the numbers
And of course we always have to believe what’s up on VT. ‘-)
one person’s opinion does not make for fact, although some good points.
Hawaii has no bad losses but has only one good win (to Baylor). if early 5-set losses are considered they are a few points away from being 25-2 and no one would be having this discussion.

we’ll see what happens with beach
    Martin out with shoulder.
