Rainbow Wahine venture to UC San Diego

The Rainbow Wahine volleyball team makes its first visit to RIMAC Arena for the program’s first Big West meeting with conference newcomer UC San Diego today in La Jolla, Calif.
The match-up will be just the second between Hawaii (7-5, 4-0 Big West) and UC San Diego (6-10, 3-2) and the first since a 15-2, 15-7, 15-13 win on Oct. 8, 1982.
The current Wahine squad began the day tied with UC Santa Barbara atop the Big West standings. The Gauchos play host to Long Beach State in a match also scheduled for 4 p.m.
The UH-UCSD match will be streamed on ESPN+ with radio coverage on ESPN Honolulu. Updates to follow below:
SET 4
>> Wagoner stays hot with a kill to start the set. Igiede with a kill and two blocks and its 4-0 UH.
>> UH leads 8-4 when UCSD strings together three straight points and closes to 8-7 on an acce. Another ace ties it at 10-10. Williams has an open net to end ta 3-0 UCSD run. Van Sickle’s ace gives UH a 12-10 lead. A Williams/Wagoner block and a UCSD error pushes the lead to 14-10. Timeout UCSD.
>> Wagoner puts down an overpass for her 20th kill. UCSD blocks Wagoner and UH hits long and the Tritons close to 14-15. Timeout UH.
>> Igiede and Wagoner end the UCSD run with a block. Lang feeding Igiede for three kills an its 19-16. Igiede with 13 kills. UCSD back to within a point before a service error and a Lang ace. UH up 21-18. Timeout UCSD.
>> Van Sickle gets two more kills and serves up her second ace of the match to give UH match point at 24-19. UCSD stays alive for two more points but Westerberg goes off the block to end it. UH wins 22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-21 to improve to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in Big West play. The Wahine play at UC Irvine tomorrow.

SET 3
>> Westerberg in to start the set in place of Akana. UH goes on 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead on Wagoner’s 10th kill. UCSD answers with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Castaneda’s eight kills gives the Tritons a 9-7 lead. She follows with her first error and Igiede’s ace ties it at 9-9.
>> Set tied 12-12 when Williams puts away three consecutive kills to give UH a 15-12 lead at the media timeout.
>> UCSD goes on a 3-0 run and ties the set on an ace by McInnes. The teams trade sideouts and UH wins the rally of the night with a kill by Wagoner, 17-16 UH.
>> McInnes getsa sideout to tie it. A net violation is called on UCSD on a joust. Tritons challenge and replay shows Igiede touched the net and UCSD take the lead 18-17. A Karacaova kill gives UCSD a 19-17 edge. Teams trade sideouts, Timeout UH trailing 19-21.
>> McDaniel with a kill in the middle, Castaneda gets her ninth kill and UCSD leads 23-19. UH takes its second timeout. UH challenges and UCSD is called for reaching over on Lang’s set and the point goes to UH to make it 22-20. Lang’s tough serve forces a back-row attack violation and it’s 21-22. UCSD takes timeout.
>> UCSD earns set point at 24-22, but Wagoner keeps UH alive with back-to-back kills to force deuce. UCSD gets a kill on a stepout to make it 25-24. Wagoner puts away a high ball to to tie it again. Wagoner is there for a dig-kill and its set point for UH. Timeout UCSD. After a rally, it’s Wagoner again from the left side and UH win the set 27-25 and leads the match 2-1. Wagoner with a career-high 18 kills with 12 digs.

SET 2
>> UCSD takes a 3-1 lead, but UH ties it on an Ikenaga ace and takes the lead on an Akana kill.
>> Tied 7-7, Van Sickle accounts for UH’s next five kills and UH takes a 12-9 lead. UCSD comes back with Naya Dong on the service line to tie it up at 13-13 with a 3-0 run. Tiffany Westerberg in for Akana with Martyna Leoniak coming in as a serving sub. Igiede puts a kill away on the right side to give UH a 15-14 lead at the media timeout.
>> Van Sickle with back-to-back kills to give her 12 in the match and eight in the set. UH up 19-16. Timeout UCSD.
>> A UCSD error keeps the run going, Van Sickle taking over with two more kills. Wagoner scores from the back row and it’s a 7-0 run and a 23-16 lead. Timeout UCSD.
>> A hitting error gives UH set point at 24-16. UCSD ends UH’s 8-0 run with a block but a service error ends the set. UH takes it 25-17 to tie the match 1-1. Van Sickle with 10 kills in the set and 14 in the match on .429 hitting.


SET 1
>> UH starters vs. UCSD: OH Brooke Van Sickle, MB Amber Igiede, OH Riley Wagoner, MB Skyler Williams, OH Braelyn Akana, S Kate Lang, L Tayli Ikenaga.
>> The match starts with a UCSD hitting error, a UH service error and UCSD hits out again, but the Tritons challenge looking for a touch. Call stands, UH up 2-1.
>> ‘Iolani graduate Naya Dong serve up an ace to give UCSD a 3-2 lead. The Tritons go on a 3-0 run to lead 6-3. UH closes to 8-9 on a Van Sickle/Williams block, but UCSD answers with another 3-0 burst and leads 12-8. Timeout Hawaii.
>> UCSD’s Emily McDaniel solo blocks Igiede to give the Tritons a 17-11 lead. Riley Wagoner has been UH’s most effective weapon so far with four kills. UH gets a block and a Van Sickle kill to close to 15-19. Timeout UCSD.
>> UCSD leads 22-17 when Akana gets her first kill. Wagoner rolls a shot into the middle for a kill and Williams puts away her second to make it a 3-0 run and cut the deficit to 20-22. Timeout UCSD.
>> A double contact on UCSD cuts the lead to one. Trinity Castaneda get one through the block to end UH’s 4-0 run. Tritons up 23-21. Timeout UH.
>> Akana goes off the block but Castaneda goes down the line to give UCSD set point at 24-22. A long rally ends with Akana hitting long. UH challenges. Call stands. UCSD wins the set 25-22.

    Tritons not doing anything special. Wahine just out of sync a bit, and I would say they need an opposite. Akana not getting it done.

    The livestats is about one play ahead of the TV broadcast. Takes away from the suspense, but I find that I like it.

    Nice the match was on ESPM+
    Just got home from dinner with family. I missed the 3rd and 4th sets and happy to learn the Wahine pulled this one out.
