Congrats to Hanna Hellvig, another Freshman of Week honor.

From the Big West:
Hanna Hellvig claimed her second Women’s Volleyball Freshman of the Week award, leading No. 11 Hawai’i to a pair of wins over the weekend for a 2-0 start to conference play.
Hellvig had a career-high tying 17 kills against Long Beach State. She added three blocks, two digs and and ace in the four-set victory.
The outside hitter recorded a career-high 20 digs against CSUN, adding 14 kills for her fifth double-double of her season. She also posted a team-high four blocks and two service aces. The 20 digs marked just the second time this season that a UH player has collected 20 in a match.
Hellvig also nominated for weekly honor as well as defensive honor
______
Hawaii remained at No. 11 in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll this morning.

UH (11-1, 2-0 Big West) beat Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge in four sets each to begin conference play last week.

Baylor is the new No. 1. It’s the first time for the Bears, the 20th program to be ranked No. 1.

I am in agreement with all the discussion lately about the Wahine and their road success, as well as their road worries (fatigue, chemistry, etc…). One thing I am concerened about is too much emphasis on an injured player, while not enough cudo’s for the girls playing the game. Dont get me wrong, I believe Jolie Rasmussen is an awesome player am very thankful she plays for the Wahine. However, her legacy has begun and will continue as the season goes on and she heals, but lets give accolades to the ladies in the “trenches” who battled through a grueling road trip and came out of it all with (1) loss to a now #1 team, Baylor. Hoping and praying for Jolies’ continued healing, but very proud of this team, and yes that includes Robin nad her staff too. GO BOWS !!!!

WA’s loss to WSU impacted negatively. Still a huge deal for wahine for not dropping in polls. Massage is clear: if wahine wants to climb in polls, earn it through two good wins against Santa Babara / CalPoly in coming two weeks.

    Sorry, and her staff…

So far Baylor now is the only undefeated team in the NCAA. Right? They lost only two sets altogether upsetting Wisconsin and Marquette along the way. Their biggest challenge will come up at Texas on the road, October 23rd. How long can this team remain undefeated?

@Cal Poly and then @UCSB the very next night is going to be tough. They’re more than capable of beating both teams but if they were to falter, staying in the conference race would require no less than 1-1.

Standford and Hawaii are similar in one aspect: passing issues. The difference is that Hawaii still manages to prevail (exception: Baylor), while Stanford is reduced to the high and wide set to the left (Plummer).

Herein lies their problem, out of system, everyone knows Plummer will get the ball. This speaks volumes concerning their back sets to the Opposite (Fitzmorris is 6’6″). Recall Nikki Taylor’s 20+ kills as Hawaii’s Opposite.

Winning the conference with the automatic bid has to be the sole focus at this stage.

Anyone know why there is no conference tournament for womens volleyball, while the men have one?

Any Jolie update? Really miss her leadership and fire power.

Congrats to Hanna for being named Big West Freshman POW again!

  11. Jon September 30, 2019 12:40 pm

    How. Is. Oregon. Still. Ranked.

  12. H-Man September 30, 2019 12:43 pm

My best guess is Jolie won’t play this week. Maybe ready for Cal Poly and UCSB. Coaches want her at 100%. Don’t want to risk re-injuring her ankle. Need her for homestretch into NCAA Tournament.

Thank you KEKAHA MIKE for your wise words. Correct, Jolie is an AMAZING player but Kudos to the wahine who stepped up and remained strong. We should save Jolie but she will still need a little practice playing with the squad in real time. There is so much to look forward to….IMUA, Wahine. Coach Robyn and her staff are coaching well. We have a good team.

    8. Team off today. Not update on Rasmussen. To quote Ah Mow, When she’s ready, she’s ready
    10. yes, updated in main box.
    11. No clue.

  15. Andrew September 30, 2019 3:19 pm

    11.

Agreed. A losing record, 5-6, and still ranked.

Interesting that both Cal Poly and Hawaii are missing their best players, Torrey van Winden and Jolie Rasmussen, respectively. They both could be absent next week Friday when the teams meet at Mott Gym. Jolie has a better chance to recover by then than Torrey.

By the way, Volleyball magazine had a long article on Torrey’s concussion and a previous article about Julie Scoles, Hawaii’s beach volleyball player who also had suffered a concussion. Julie was the inspiration for Torrey on a possible path for recovery. May both Torrey an Winden and Jolie Rasmussen recover in time so they can compete next week. If not, then maybe by Nov. 3rd, when Cal Poly will visit Hawaii.

Notwithstanding the NCAA/AVCA rankings, a sober Perspective:

    – Stanford had 28 errors and lost to Washington
    – Missouri had 27 errors and lost to Kentucky
    – Hawai’i had 32 errors and beat CSUN

I forgot to congratulate Hanna Helvig for her second Big West freshman of the week award in three weeks. Again,, Maia Dvoracek from Cal Poly won her second Big West Player of the Week award in parallel. Both times Hanna was nominated for the same award which Maia won. Hope she doesn’t get jealous of her. Good that Hanna could win some kind of an award and I’m happy for her.

    Hanna hou!!!
    Hanna is great!
And, yes, the whole team really pulled through on a challenging road trip.

  20. darkfire35 September 30, 2019 7:53 pm

Bra Jobbat, Hanna! And just a freshman too! Angelica & Kaleo really did the Bows proud by their recruiting! I really wasn’t expecting the freshmen to have such a huge impact, but they must really like each other to keep fighting when they were doing horribly on the road and still win.
I can see Jolie resting up until they go to Cal Poly/UCSB. I know in her pre-season interviews she wanted to start fresh, healthy, injury-free…but that’s life. Sometimes things just happen no matter what you do. Just get better Jolie! And fantastic job everyone else for filling in and fighting hard! We are proud of all of you no matter if your contribution is on the side or on the court! GO BOWS!

    17. Now a different perspective:

–UW, KY and UH each outhit their opponents (higher hitting pct.)
–If you calculate Kills minus Errors, each of UW, KY and UH had higher numbers than their opponents
–In all three cases, UW, KY and UH won.

Side note: CSUN is the only unranked team of the six. CSUN is the only team of the six with a losing record. CSUN is the only team of the six without a top 25 RPI ranking (unofficial); they are at 138. CSUN has 9 losses; the other five teams combined have 13 losses.

    11. 15. Oregon, which tied for 2nd in last year’s Pac-12 conference and ended 2018 with an Elite Eight NCAA tournament appearance, was selected to finish 3rd (just above Washington and just below USC) in the 2019 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll.

UO has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 49 of the last 50 polls. But just because a team has been ranked week in and week out doesn’t mean it automatically deserves to be in the Top 25. You think?

Ducks hosts Stanford (Oct 4) and California (Oct 6). Should UO lose twice, it should go the same direction as once-14th-ranked USC — out!

    4. Very impressed with Baylor and I think they will defeat Texas easily.

  24. Crazy4WVB October 1, 2019 3:48 pm

I think Coach Robyn and staff and girls did a great job learning how to play on the road to prepare them for the NCAA tournament. Chances are they’ll be on the road a week to 10 days longer then this last trip because Hawaii always gets screwed with the seeding. Everyone play great when they had too. And adversities. Delayed flight and not gym to practice in. Wow. I admire how they handled themselves. Great job

    new thread up for Wednesday
agree with the job they did on the road.
Got into L.A. area Monday, didn’t play until Friday.
Practice times not idea. As mentioned before when Beach kept changing availability of practice times on them, including 6-8 a.m., they were helped by Jason Olive for an alternative site at St. Bernard’s, his alma mater.
