Cal Poly sweeps Riverside, and UCSB looks like will sweep UC Davies. The way these two teams are playing UH going have rough trip next week end.

  2. Big Island Volleyball Fan October 4, 2019 5:44 pm

1, Actually UCSB swept Davis first and then Cal Poly swept Riverside second.

Note to Cindy: As of this point, the box score or live stats between Cal Poly and Riverside are totally wrong, so please don’t copy the final scores from there. Although it says Riverside, the scores and stats are from a previous match with Long Beach. A good idea is to compare the scores with Long Beach first to see that the error was corrected.

Final analysis: Since UCSB was able to defeat Davis, a higher ranked team than Riverside faster and with better stats than Cal Poly, it seems that UCSB is a better team than Cal Poly.

  3. Kazu October 4, 2019 6:09 pm

    2. They got that two Ruddins sisters on the UCSB team. I think this is the team that UH will have problems with. Hope Wahine is all ready to go tonight.

Yes, I see that they are correct and that Cal Poly corrected the wrong scores. Everything is fine now.

  8. Kauaiboy October 4, 2019 7:26 pm

This Irvine team is pretty bad compared to years past. This is the type of team Riley should be building her confidence with, so far she’s been the tipping queen! Setting hasn’t been nothing to write home about. Amber has been the star so far :-)… my fav wahine!!!!

  9. Kazu October 4, 2019 7:31 pm

UCLA winning where it counts, in conference 3-0 . Good for them. Hope they do well enough to make it to the NCAA tournament at years end.

  10. Cindy Luis October 4, 2019 7:47 pm

    8. I don’t see a problem with Wagoner’s confidence.
agree this is not the UCI team of previous years.
    surprisingly Marjama without a kill.

  11. Big Island Volleyball Fan October 4, 2019 8:17 pm

    7. I guess they corrected the score before you checked.

Whenever Rika Okino is substituted for Ross McKenna, she makes an error, whether serving or reception. She didn’t even have a dig. She doesn’t seem focused today. Maybe McKenna should not be substituted any more.

  12. Kauaiboy October 4, 2019 8:19 pm

If not her confidence then maybe her stats ;-)…

  13. Kauaiboy October 4, 2019 8:39 pm

Yikes; this team has sooo many ups and downs!!!

  14. Kazu October 4, 2019 8:59 pm

Irvine is looking to go 5. I can see it now, it wouldn’t surprise me that they will be 0-2 next week on the road. Nice to see Westerberg in there.

  15. sports for fun October 4, 2019 9:09 pm

Is Brooke hurt? Na Wahine need to get their minds straight! They better fight, scratch and claw! It sounds like their befuddled; in shock at what’s going on. LET”S GO BOWS!!!!!!!

I say “sounds” because I’m listening over the radio. Even the announcer sounds shocked!!

  16. T103 October 4, 2019 9:09 pm

Holy crud! going to the 5th, our passing is so off tonight, and needless to say, if you can’t pass, , you can’t set, and you can’t win. Shooting ourselves in the foot. Hitting -029 in that 4th set. Lets go wahine!

  17. Warrior Lifer October 4, 2019 9:17 pm

Definitely not getting any favors from this officiating crew at the start of this 5th set, two really really iffy calls imo.

  18. T103 October 4, 2019 9:18 pm

Wow I wonder if that ball was even “get-a-ble” wen Irvine’s setter ran into our camera man. If there was no way for her to even get it at all, then it shouldn’t have been a “re-do” but I’m not at the game, and I only saw the camera view once on tv, so I don’t know if or if not that ball was get-a-ble. Definitely swayed the momentum. Next play, next ball, next point lets go bows

  19. ManoaFan October 4, 2019 9:18 pm

Bottom ref. Not going to say his name. GOTTA GO!!!! What an embarrassment. Even Ryan Tsuji complained about him in the post show earlier this season. Ridiculous calls!!!!!!!

  20. Don October 4, 2019 9:33 pm

    18. As soon as the UCI player touched the table, play should’ve been ruled dead. More reason the R2 needs to GO! It was HIS CALL TO MAKE!

  21. Ki October 4, 2019 9:35 pm

How much challenge this lady get? That’s 3 already in this set.

  22. HawaiiMongoose October 4, 2019 9:42 pm

    Well, that was a disaster.

  23. ManoaFan October 4, 2019 9:44 pm

There goes our RPI… maybe drop down to #18 again. Sucks.

But still we wouldn’t have been in this situation if it were for the bottom ref.

  24. T103 October 4, 2019 9:50 pm

So what is the official rule for a situation that happens like what happened tonight, w the whole interference and camera man and a ball that is able to be played or absolutely not being able to be played?

Side note, we did have some bad calls, but got to hand it to Irvine cuz they played well, and we passed horribly, couldn’t run good quick plays, couldn’t dig balls. We shot ourselves in the foot countless times, we need to regroup and get back to the basics of passing, setting, hitting, and defense.

  25. Optimist October 4, 2019 9:51 pm

Ernie Ho(?) Needs to be replaced, too many bad calls on reviews (including other earlier matches). The overrule of the legal to 4 hits was bad (if he has access to the same views we see on tv). I do wonder if the later out changed to a UCI touch was a make up call. He did not seem to review iit very long. That being said take nothing away from UCI..
Oh well, hit a bump in the road, learn and move on.

  26. mei October 4, 2019 9:54 pm

    I have no words ☹️☹️☹️

  27. haka October 4, 2019 9:54 pm

Why have replay if you keep getting it wrong? May as well not have it. Smh. Nuts.

  28. warriorwahine October 4, 2019 9:55 pm

what an awful disaster! perhaps can ask the big west to replay set 5 at 1 – 1 because that replay is essentially an illegal replay? the ball hit the table before the irvine player even got to it.

just like irvine asked big west to replay when irvine was versus long beach 3 years ago in 2016?

  29. haka October 4, 2019 10:01 pm

Brooke not at full strength hurt. Our options were too limited. And of course, our passing was not good. Moving forward, we need to get healthy and get it one game at a time. Go Bows!

  30. warriorwahine October 4, 2019 10:03 pm

    28. cindy maybe ask robyn and let her go that route. that replay was not even a challenge and should be an illegal replay. the ball hit the table on camera before the irvine player even got there.

  31. haka October 4, 2019 10:11 pm

The camera man is a fixed object. He is part of the table at that point. He did not interfere with anything. Irvine sure didn’t think he was in the way when they used his replays. Ernie Ho really embarrassed himself tonight.

  32. Andy October 4, 2019 10:12 pm

Actually the first two sets, other than Norene’s service runs, I don’t think Hawaii looked particularly good in many stretches. More like Irvine at times looked pretty bad. I was talking with my wife that Big West play doesn’t prepare UH for the Tournament because they can get away with marginal execution on nights like tonight. Boy, was I wrong!

  33. Connor October 4, 2019 10:12 pm

Just got back from game. What a disaster! Everyone to blame but mostly coaches. RAM persists in playing okino. She killed them with bad serving, mediocre passing. Do not know why she doesn’t play hanawahine at Libero. Other problem is Ross. Too small and unlike van sickle unable to hit pass a big block. Sublet ain’t much better. Wish Tiffany could play outside in place of Ross. The sub rotation is eating into RAM flexibility to sub out for back row play.

  34. Kauaiboy October 4, 2019 10:14 pm

This teams struggles followed them back home from their opening matches in the Big West.
Iosia has been so inconsistent (Choy has had her moments also), I wouldn’t mind seeing a 5-1… congrats to Irvine for not folding and for winning the serve & pass game. Oh and those 2 free points also helped out!!! The difference in that last set.

  35. haka October 4, 2019 10:17 pm

Oh my, I blame the fans. Lmao

  36. Cindy Luis October 4, 2019 10:26 pm

    Thanks for all your comments.
Haven’t see the coaches or players. This may be a long night for them. It’s 10:30 and they’re still not out.
Totally agree that the ball was unplayable.
That situation a couple years ago between Beach and UCI was different.
I don’t know if UH would consider a protest.
Not sure what happened with Van Sickle late in Set 2 but it did change the chemistry. The way they redid the KT tape that she had makes me think it was a hamstring. but I am not a doctor or a trainer.
    33. think you’re being harsh on Okino. Wagoner also had some poor passes.
The one problem with the back-row setter offense is they can’t attack the ball and smart teams will take advantage of tight sets where the back-row setter will get called for an illegal block.
Did think the ref-ing was questionable.
Someone asked about the number of replays.
You get three per match but a fourth if it goes to a fifth.
I think UCI should have been called for a delay of game when Iosia was already tossing the ball on her serve.

  37. ManoaFan October 4, 2019 10:38 pm

Ernie Ho needs to Go. It rhymes and would look great on a sign in the SSC.

  38. warriorwahine October 4, 2019 10:49 pm

    36. hows that situation different from a couple years ago between beach and irvine? back then irvine was called for a rotational violation. this one is irvine was granted a replay that was not a challenge and they would not otherwise be entitled to. i say ask robyn about that.
and yeah that delay of game caused by irvine was also odd and should had been called.

  39. Kauaiboy October 4, 2019 10:58 pm

There was no way in hell that Irvine player was gonna be able to bring that ball back into play… and that double contact, what replay was he watching ?!?!?! Don’t get me wrong, we still stunk up the arena tonight but those calls may have cost us the match!

  40. H-Man October 4, 2019 11:00 pm

Why blame the officials for this loss? UCI played great. Wahine played poorly. All the unforced errors are coming to haunt the Wahine. Service-receive was extremely poor. Overall, passing and setting also poorly executed. And where was the Wahine block? I am hoping this is the one really bad match for the season. Let’s see how they rebound tomorrow.

  41. darkfire35 October 4, 2019 11:03 pm

There was one girl on the Irvine team that on her “hit” seemed to “palm” the ball and literally throw it down rather than hit the ball. I thought that was illegal? No?

  42. blunite October 4, 2019 11:04 pm

Adversity brings reality into focus. Tonight the better team won.

    – The current (UH) lineup is lacking in consistent passing and hitting.
    – This is what coaches are paid to improve, and doing nothing is not an option.

Judging from the last match on the mainland and this match it ia clear that UH is lacking.

  43. Cindy Luis October 4, 2019 11:06 pm

    38. the difference is a rotation violation is a correctable error.
the replay was a judgement call.
but i do question why it was allowed since it wasn’t an official challenge.
    40. Wahine did play poorly. The calls early in Set 5 were critical

    41. agree that there were ‘throws.’ again, judgement calls. some refs call it, others let it go.

  44. islandman October 4, 2019 11:09 pm

Give credit to 17 year old Ofoegbu,Carter and the other Irvine players

  45. Cindy Luis October 4, 2019 11:13 pm

    44. she got better as the night went on. wasn’t jumping early.
As for UH’s passing, without Van Sickle in there they definitely struggled.

  46. Cindy Luis October 4, 2019 11:17 pm

    42. Not sure why you think the coaches aren’t working on the players to improve passing.

  47. Bleachercoach October 4, 2019 11:27 pm

Very obvious now that after Jolie got injured , Hanna stepped up with providing big matches for us. But now, with an obvious injury to BVS knee, the dynamics and talent on the court has changed. BVS brings that uncanny energy with her plays offensively and defensively. Yes, she does make errors but she is a “Key Piece” athlete that we need on the court if we don’t have Jolie!
Without them both we are good but not as competitive! Just my view!

I think Hanna , Riley, and Ross needs to come out of the game/match and put in some DS or Liberos when they rotate to the backrow. They look so fatigued in going into the 3rd game every match I have attended. They all have a tendency to make bad or shank passes and not be as productive at the net either hitting wide or into the block. It’s not their fault! I just think that if Jolie(ankle) and BVS don’t recover from knee situation, we should scrap the 6 rotation thing. Use our Libero’s and DS to shore up the passing and Keep Hanna, Ross, BVS, Sky, Amber, .Riley, and maybe Westerberg primarily up front.
We have been able to get away playing as successful as we have been; but the girls are starting to get rattled and doubt themselves especially when they are making consistent bad plays as the match wears on…
FATIGUED is killing our girls and overwork can lead to INJURIES also

  48. warriorwahine October 4, 2019 11:30 pm

    43. still that rotation violation was caused by a false call.

a replay without a challenge or something on a dead play that was never reached is also a false call and wouldnt be surprised to say also causes a rotation violation.

on a positive note, glad norene made her nasty serve nastier! but her fellow wahine need to contribute to her to let those count and not go to vain.

  49. Astroboy October 4, 2019 11:42 pm

I think a significant part of the loss was the exit of an injured Brooke van Sickle in sets 3 and 4. You could literally see the system just fall apart. This really exposed the weakness of the Bows to multiple injuries. The loss to Baylor was one thing, but to go down to UCI when they are really bad this year was stunning. What is disturbing is that in the first two conference games the Bows got batted around much more than they should have as well. It was easy to blame that on road fatigue, but now I fear it’s symptomatic of deeper problems.

As for the refs, I am speechless. I have rarely seen so many bizarre “what the eff is going on?” moments.

  50. blunite October 5, 2019 12:07 am

    48. In the short run, it (passing) is what it is. In the long run improvement is possible. Banking on improvement is fine if you are training for next season.

There is a way to cover-up mediocre passing, but it relies on skilled OHs. OHs that can beat a double block.

A previous coach was famous for “letting things work themselves out”. In other words maintaining the status quo and doing nothing.

  51. Jon October 5, 2019 12:37 am

Just putting in my two cents…

I’m thinking Robyn should think about moving to a 5-1 and using a libero. So many lost points with the OH’s playing left back. Personally, I think Iosia is deserving. I think she is slightly more consistent with her sets and a much better defender… Also might be nice to just leave her in to hit and still run a 6-2. But what do I know…

What did you think about that camera man call? I thought it was odd… top ref seemed lost.

  52. uhfan October 5, 2019 2:41 am

Last night Wahine played poorly while UCI played great; especially after set 2.

The officiating was an issue and someone should look at the number of challenges UCI had during the match, I watched the game again and noticed that UCI had four (4) challenges for the match (not including the cameraman call and another one with Norene serving).

In the fifth set the cameraman call and one with Norene serving (and stopping) because the UCI coach was talking with ref were considered what? If these were challenges why was the replay requested and overturned? As for stopping Norene from serving, should UCI be penalized for delaying the game?

  53. RainbowWahineFan15 October 5, 2019 4:43 am

Wow, definitely shocked at the outcome of this match. I thought for sure the Wahine were going to sweep and in doing so went to bed after the second set. Sounds like the Wahines need a week or two of practices strictly for passing and defense as it’s obvious they have terminators who can put the ball away. I remember back in high school, our coach for the girls varsity team did that before the state tournament and it did wonders as the girls went on to win the state championship year. Hopefully this loss comes as a blessing in disguise and the Wahines can figure things out. Nonetheless I like this Rainbow Wahine team and still believe they’ll contend for a national championship. Go Bows!

  54. menehune October 5, 2019 4:48 am

    Reveille!!!!!

  55. Bowsfan October 5, 2019 6:40 am

If Brooke can’t play @ all or just back row, will she be the libero. Then Norene can be the hitter again, which we need. Robyn was hoping we would win in 3 or 4 without Brooke, which we can’t. In game 5 Fullerton complaining to down official to disrupt Norene during her serving rotation.

  56. Setaone October 5, 2019 6:46 am

That picture of Norene arguing the call speaks so much! Irvine coach definitely intimidated the down ref into the 4 touch call and replaying the camera man “interference” play.

Can’t say I was impressed with Irvine’s coach’s demeanor. But I guess it works for her.

Any luck getting a statement from Robyn?

  57. Bowsfan October 5, 2019 7:44 am

    28. Should look @ that game and last night game. I don’t remember what happened, since it wasn’t a UH game. Can a coach complain or disrupt a server, after the whistle blown. I was @ the game, so I wasn’t listening to radio or tv for the explanation.

  58. R.M October 5, 2019 7:57 am

Im just really upset of the officials specifically on the fifth set.

  59. Kazu October 5, 2019 8:31 am

    53. Maybe they should switch Iosia to be a hitter. I think that they should try using Westerberg on the outside. Anything until when and if JR gets to 100%.

  60. Andrew October 5, 2019 9:37 am

I mean I hate to say it but at this point gotta jus hope this season doesn’t become a colossal collapse and we get a at large bid. I can’t imagine the team going on the road at this point vs the conference two best teams and beating either of them after losing to 3-13. I doubt 2 or 3 losses get you a conference championship either. not the way cal poly and UCSB have been playing.

  61. Aloha73g October 5, 2019 9:48 am

I think some people are over reacting. They had a bad night. A lot of unforced errors … serving in set 3 and hitting in set 4. One match does not make or break a season. I am confident they will learn and grow from this.

We are back to being the Big West team with a target on our back. All of our opponents will bring their A game and we need to be ready. On to the next match!!

  62. Andrew October 5, 2019 9:59 am

    59

it’s not over reacting, it’s kind of a reality check. this team is great, young and talented but with key players injured, they are vulnerable. The two best teams in conference are up next on the schedule on the road. I hope they pull it off but it’s difficult to imagine at this point the team pulling off both wins. Playing said teams at home will not be easy either. At least Hawai’i had an impressive non conference season.

  63. nomu1001 October 5, 2019 10:06 am

    36. whats up with 10:30 and still not out??

  64. Bowsfan October 5, 2019 10:54 am

Set 3 and 4 would be our norm without our transfers.

  65. Aloha73g October 5, 2019 11:00 am

All season they have played up to…and down to their opponents. I’m not too concerned about next week. They are learning and growing before our eyes. I’m very excited.

48, I see your point but still think it is correctible error vs. judgement call. one other thing if my memory serves correctly. they replayed the match at original home site. It would be interesting to see if they would fly UCI back out here for a fifth set. It would be a league decision and would be on them to pay for it.
    63. there was an error in that stats midway through Set 1 (It stayed 25-10 most of the night) that they had to wait until match over to re-imput stats and get it right. One of the quirks of this stats program.
