All three Hawaii volleyball teams were expected to announce commits for 2020-21 but we have been told the SandBows will be out on Thursday.

Signing with the Hawaii men is 6-8 setter Austin Buchanan, son of Idaho WVB coach Debbie Buchanan. Mom was recruited by Dave Shoji but chose to play at USC over Hawaii.

According to our Paul Honda and Billy Hull on Hawaii Prep World, Makua Marumoto (St. Francis/HBA) is signing with Rainbow Warriors.

Here’s Hawaii Prep World’s video and list of high school athletes who signed this morning at the Sheraton Waikiki.

As for Wahine volleyball, setter Kate Lang confirmed her signing on Twitter. The 5-10 Lang orally committed 3-6-18.
Libero/DS Georgia Via, from Frisco, Texas, is an invited walk-on.

Was told yesterday Wahine expected to sign 2 today. Will update Warriors and SandBows later.

    hmmm… Kate Lang signs with UH, Georgia Via is a walk on (walk ons don’t sign NLIs), Cindy stated she was told 2 will be signing. So is there another recruit out there?

  6. Ki November 13, 2019 10:22 am

    Probably the foreign recruit maybe?!

    Welcome Texans ! This season is not over yet, but already getting excited for next season with the newbies and our returnees. Hope they all return and no one transfer out.

    Should be interesting to see who that second NLI comes from. I don’t anticipate it to be our European MB/OH since international recruits take a little longer to process, but if she happened to have committed earlier, maybe the process has underway. Either way, no matter who it is, I’m sure it would be a delightful surprise. I just love the way Robyn and her staff are recruiting and developing.

    I’ve also heard from a friend who owns a prestigious club in Texas that, if needed, Lang is more than capable of running a 5-1 for us provided that she continues to be trained by Ping. Obviously, we all would like to have a capable back up or another quality setter to run a 6-2, but let’s see how the recruiting goes. Wahine VB fans no longer have to be wanting every possible transfer to come here because we will not feel the need for any of our Wahine to be replaced! The coaching staff is doing a fabulous job of getting UH Wahine Volleyball back to the top with their own flair.

    Did Keonilei Akana sign an NLI this morning with USC? I’m wondering because a L/DS player from Texas, Sam Hastings signed an NLI to play for USC. Would USC grant scholarships to two L/DS players?

  11. Brandon November 13, 2019 12:42 pm

    Akana is on a two year deal as far as I know.

  12. Cindy Luis November 13, 2019 2:39 pm

    10. Akana did sign this morning with USC

  13. Cindy Luis November 13, 2019 2:40 pm

    Several daughters of former Hawaii players also signed NLIs on Wednesday:
    Kamehameha’s Keonilei Akana, daughter of Joselyn Robins Akana (Wahine 1993-96), signed to play at USC;
    South (Calif.) High’s Kai Lopez, daughter of Kristal Attwood (Wahine 1990-93) signed with Long Beach State;
    Kamehameha’s Maluhia Ma’a, daughter of Lisa Strand-Ma’a (Wahine 1981-84) and Pono Ma’a (Warriors 1983-86), signed with Kent;
    Westlake (Texas) High’s Lexi Poppinga, daughter of Karrie Trieschman Poppinga (1987-90) and Brian Poppinga (Warriors 1987-90) signed with Santa Clara;

  14. Cindy Luis November 13, 2019 3:48 pm

    Also signing today
    Austin Buchanan 6-8 setter
    Son of Idaho WVB coach Debbie Buchanan
    Warriors have 2 more but don’t think they’ll get the paperwork in today.

    I’m guessing those other two Warrior recruits we’re waiting on are Jack Walmer and Logan Sharp.

    Georgia Via is a walkon so who is that second Wahine recruit? How is it even possible that there is another mystery recruit whom we Hawaii fans no nothing about?

  16. Andrew November 13, 2019 6:46 pm

    14

    Wow 6’8 setter? Bet he’ll be a force at the net

  17. H-Man November 13, 2019 6:50 pm

    I am disappointed that UH Athletics has not posted any recruiting announcements.

  18. Kahuna November 13, 2019 7:05 pm

    #17 Maybe they waiting for all the LOI to arrive before announcing it. Couple of guys for the men’s and one for the women.

    Hoping for a surprise on the women side. Maybe one more international OH for the women and the men.

  19. H-Man November 13, 2019 7:30 pm

    Yeah maybe.

  20. HawaiiMongoose November 13, 2019 7:32 pm

    Looks like the surprise is that the Wahine expected to sign two today and one didn’t come through. Hopefully tomorrow the second NLI will be received and we can find out who the mystery recruit is.

    wahine volleyball needs to recruit another left side hitter, then hellvig can be permanent right side where she prefers and does best, as Norene will be gone. not sure is ross is a senior or not. yes, we need a setter badly. they should go with 5-1 instead of 6-2 as they won’t have two equally good setters next year. have to work on the middles to block the quick set middle. also need to continue to work with amber on her hitting motion, she lapses into hitting the old way. she needs to shorten her swing, high from the ear and hit downward.

    If you hate recruiting rumors, then please skip this post…

    I’ve been reading the rumors on another online forum of a mystery European OH recruit who could be the second scholarship player. Might explain the delay in paperwork, similar to Hellvig’s case. Could also be a lot of hogwash, so readers beware.

    Given what I have read, I was able to identify a potential match, given the rumored height, position, nationality, and quality of the player. She plays for her country’s youth national team, she is not yet 18, and she plays club ball in a country different from her home country. She and Hellvig are of similar height, although Hellvig has the higher spike and block height numbers by around 4 inches (if the measurements I saw are accurate). She has received international tournament accolades, and is a clear terminator from what I read. Considered by some to be the most promising player in her region. If UH lands this person, then wow. I mean wow (and I’m not one to gush over recruits), based mainly on the accolade article and a little bit of what’s on her club team’s page (I haven’t found any video on her yet). She has the height and the arm we all dream of in a Wahine OH recruit.

    I won’t name this person because everything I read on the other forum could be total bull, or I could have misidentified the player, but if she does sign, then I will produce the links to my source material.

    22. A couple of things. This player had an ok U18 world championship tournament in Egypt, not the star of the team statistically. What makes me think I have the right girl is that it would not surprise me if Milan Zarkovic’s network alerted him to this player and he passed the info on to Robyn et al. The pieces seem to fit but I could be mistaken.

  24. Maverick November 14, 2019 1:09 am

    22,23. According to a poster on the other forum, the player in question is not the one I identified (too bad). This poster seems to have inside info, based on prior posts. Sorry, just ignore 22-23.

  25. Cindy Luis November 14, 2019 6:37 am

    think they’re waiting to do one release for the men and the women. Beach coming out on Thursday.
    Men’s VB did do Twitter and Instagram with Marumoto and Buchanan.
    15. Walmer for sure. He sent in his stuff this morning (Thursday). Not sure the other is Sharp.
    21. what they need is another setter.
    22. I do. which is why I don’t delve too much into it.
    when they sign, they sign.
