Game Day: UH hits the road at Utah Valley

After a 2-1 showing in the season-opening Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, Hawaii opens another run of three matches in three days with today’s meeting with Utah Valley (2-1) in Orem, Utah.
After today’s match at Lockhart Arena, the Rainbow Wahine face No. 22 San Diego on Friday morning and No. 19 Utah on Saturday.
Along with playing its first road match of the season, Hawaii will be playing in front of fans for the first time since the 2019 NCAA tournament.

SET 5
>> Teams trade sideouts to 3-3, UVU takes the lead when Johnson hits wide. Natalie Palmer’s ace gives UVU a 5-3 lead. Timeout UH.
>> UVU tkaes an 8-6 lead on back-to-back Tanuvasa kills. UH ties it 9-9 when Byrd puts away a kill on a second touch. Williams and Van Sickle stuff Tanuvasa to give UH a 10-9 lead. Timeout UVU.
>> Tori Dorius ends the UH run to tie it at 10-10. Williams hits long, and Dorius puts away two more and UVU leads 13-10. UH takes its final timeout.
>> Van Sickle is blocked and UVU has match point at 14-10. Van Sickle gets a kill through the block. Van Sickle and Williams team on a block and it’s 14-12. Timeout UVU.
>> Kristen Bell puts away her 18th kill and UVU defeats UH 25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-12. UH falls to 2-2 heading into tomorrow’s match with San Diego.

SET 4
>> UH goes on a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead on Van Sickle’s 15th kill. UVU ties it a 9-9 on a Tanuvasa ace. Teams trading sideouts and UH takes a 15-13 lead into the media timeout after a Skyler Williams kill in the middle.
>> A long rally ends with a Tanuvasa hitting into the net. Van Sickle follows with her third ace to give UH an 18-14 lead. Timeout UVU.
>> Robyn Ah Mow going deeper into the bench with Kate Lang checking in and Annika De Goode making her UH debut earlier in the set.
>> Igiede’s 13th kill gives UH a 20-16 lead. Bell goes off the block for a kill, a rally ends with a net violation on Byrd and Van Sickle hits long from the back row. Timeout UH leading 20-19.
>> Johnson ends the UVU run with a cross-court kill. UVU goes on a 3-0 run and leads 22-21 when Van Sickle hits long. Wagoner puts one away from the back row to tie it. Williams and Van Sickle team on a block to give UH a 23-22 lead. Timeout UVU.
>> Tanuvasa finds the back right corner for back-to-back kills and UVU has match point at 24-23. Timeout UH.
>> UVU can’t return a Van Sickle kill and it’s deuce. Williams with a solo block in the middle on Kendra Nock, advantage Wahine. Williams and Leoniak team on another block and UH wins the set 26-24. On to the fifth we go.

SET 3
>> UVU runs out to a 4-1 start but UH closes to 6-5 on Van Sickle’s 10th kill of the match.
>> UH’s eighth hitting error of the set gives UVU a 15-10 lead going into the media timeout. Wahine hitting -.130 in the set and .165 for the match.
>> UH chipping away and trails 18-16 on an Igiede/Leoniak block. Timeout UVU. Igiede up to seven blocks. Van Sickle with a double-double (11 kills, 11 digs).
>> UH now on a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. Timeout UVU. Igiede in on three blocks in the run, including a solo stuff to give UH its first lead of the set. She is up to 9 blocks.
>> Tanuvasa gets a kill coming out of the timeout to tie it up. UH challenges. Call Stands. 19-19.
>> UVU setter Abbie Miller two-hands the ball over and it lands in the back corner for a kill. UVU up 20-19. Timeout UH.
>> Miller ace gives UVU the lead. UVU opens a 23-20 lead when Van Sickle hits long. Mylana Byrd gets one back with a kill. Kristen Bell gives UVU set point with a kill at 24-21.
>> Van Sickle gets back-to-back kills to get UH to within a point. But Bell pounds a kill down the line to give UVU the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.


SET 2
>> UH starts the set with a 3-0 with Igiede and Leoniak combining on a block and Johnson converting an Igiede set into a tough angle kill. Johnson puts away an overpass to make it 6-2 and UVU takes a timeout.
>> UH opens up a five-point lead on kills by Leoniak and Van Sickle. The lead grows to 14-8 on back-to-back kills by Van Sickle. UVU takes its second timeout.
>> Van Sickle gets a dig kill on what looked like a UVU block and UH pulls away. Riley Wagoner goes on a five-point run at the service line that includes an ace. Igiede is in on consecutive blocks and UH leads 23-12.
>> Igiede’s fifth kill of the match gives UH set point at 24-14. UVU’s Kazna Tanuvasa hits long and the match is tied 1-1.

SET 1
>> Same starters for Hawaii as Sunday’s match against Texas A&M —  Brooke Van Sickle, Amber Igiede, Martyna Leoniak, Skyler Williams, Mylana Byrd, Mia Johnson and Tayli Ikenaga.
>> Rough start for the Wahine with three kills and four errors in their first 14 attempts for a minus-.071 start. UH calls timeout trailing 11-6.
>> UH closing the gap on an ace by Janelle Gong and a Brooke Van Sickle kill on an overpass. UVU lead down to 15-13.
>> UH back to within one on a block by Amber Igiede and Mylana Byrd. UH’s third service error gives UVU a 20-18 lead. Wahine tie it at 20-20 on a Skyler Williams/Byrd block.
>> UVU reclaims the lead on a UH service error and a hitting error. The teams trade service errors and UVU leads 23-21. UH takes its second timeout.
>> UH’s fifth service error gives UVU set point at 24-22. UH fights off the first on a Williams kill in the middle. But UVU finishes the set with Kristen Bell going cross court for her third kill. UVU takes the set 25-23.
