Will Gregory trying to return to UH football

Running back Will Gregory is trying to get back into the University of Hawaii.

I spoke with UH’s leading rusher of two seasons ago on the phone recently, and he said he has put forth an appeal for readmission after spending the fall semester at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

He played in 10 games for Mt. SAC, and was second on the team with 382 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 91 carries.  He also caught six passes for 56 yards.

“I played a little football but mostly worked on academics,” he said.

Gregory was expelled from UH after the 2012 season for having repeatedly violating terms of probation after a campus incident the previous spring 2012.

Gregory played one season at UH, rushing for 691 yards and three touchdowns in 2012 as a second-year freshman.

A source told me the appeal is out of the hands of the athletic department and will be decided by the chancellor’s office.

I wish Gregory well. It appears that he has grown up by taking care of his academics this fall semester.

Should never have been placed on probation in the first place……since was never afforded due process……’cuz of Upper Campus politics.

UH football, as bad as it is, should not burden itself with the services, as good as they are, of a player who lacked the discipline necessary to do the things he needed to do in the first place. UH needs the skills of players who are willing to do what is necessary to help the team and should pass on those players unwilling to discipline themselves to that effort.

Good luck Will Gregory. The running back position is crowded. A good problem to have.

He sounds sincerely contrite, I say cut him some slack let him back in the classroom. Besides perhaps UH and Gregory can help one another on the gridiron!

I hope common sense and judgement are applied. The second chance is always better than the first—hope he makes it. Good luck Will if you read this—
