Prankster reaches Chow

Yes, that was Norm Chow on the other end of the phone line Wednesday with a bogus “talent evaluator” asking the University of Hawaii coach if he’d be willing to help the New York Giants as a consultant after the UH season is over.

Chow acknowledged today that was him talking to prankster Ken Tarr on Wednesday after Tarr had called him pretending to be working for the Giants. Chow seemed agreeable to the idea of helping the Giants, but said Thursday before the Rainbow Warriors left Hawaii for their game at UNLV that he had quickly figured out the call was fake.

“I knew it was a hoax 30 seconds into the call,” Chow said. “From there it was just trying to figure out how to politely get off the phone.”

The call ended with Chow agreeing to talk with Tarr again next week and saying, “Let’s do it, let’s see where we can go.”

Tarr has hoaxed plenty of coaches while pretending to recruit them for jobs, most recently “offerring” the USC job to Tony Dungy and Jack Del Rio.

The funniest part of this was when Tarr said Chow could come consult the Giants when the Rainbow Warriors’ season was over, “Notwithstanding a New Year’s bowl game.”
