Warrior Beat: UH-Navy tracker

I have attention … uh, attention-deficit problems, so this may or may not work out. But for now the plan is to do in-game updates. We can interact, too.

You also can follow or direct message me at: Tsai’s twitter

* * * * *

Cole McDonald and JoJo Ward team on a 75-yard scoring pass to extend Hawaii’s lead to 52-35.

* * * * * *

Malcolm Perry’s third pass of the game — fifth of his career — goes 19 yards to Tre Walker for a TD. UH still leads, 45-35.

* * * * *

Cedric Byrd single-handedly extends UH’s lead to 45-28.

Byrd gets behind the defense, and makes a one-handed grab on a 31-yard scoring pass from Cole McDonald.

* * * *

Zach Abey scores two TDs in a 1:35 span to close Navy to 38-28.

In between, Cole McDonald lost a fumble on a sack-strip. It was McDonald’s first turnover in his two-season UH career.

* * * * *

What more have we learned? Navy always fair catches kickoffs, and Zach Abey is tough near the goal line. Abey’s second TD closes Navy to 38-14.

* * * * *

It’s 38-14 at the half. Here’s what we’ve learned:

> John Ursua, Cedric Byrd and JoJo Ward is very good.
> Cole McDonald is having a nice first half — 19 of 27 for 249 yards and three TDs (two on fourth down). There were four drops.
> Except for the two dive-driven drives, the Warriors 5-5-1 defense is unique and effective.

* * * * *

UH’s celebration lasted 15 seconds.

Malcolm Perry goes 75 yards on a keeper to close Navy to 35-14 with 4:02 to play. Kenny Niumatalolo said Perry is an “explosive” player. I guess he’s right.

* * * * *

Fourth and 1?

Was there a doubt Rolo would go for it?

On the play-action, McDonald and Ursua team on a 50-yard, catch-and-sprint for a 35-7 UH lead with 4:17 left before the intermission.

* * * * *

Navy goes back to the basics — the fullback dive. Navy advances to the 3, from where Zach Abey scores on a keeper. UH still leads, 28-7.

* * * * *

OK, who had Max Hendrie as the first Australian since Scott Harding to score a UH touchdown?

Hendrie goes 19-yards on the scoop-and-score following a Jeffrey Keene block.

* * * * *

UH makes it 21-0 on 34-yard TD pass from McDonald to JoJo Ward. Navy pressed, Ward caught it with a little space … and then raced off with a lot of space.

* * * * *

After going 28 yards on a dive, Fred Holly scoots 1 yard around left end for a 14-0 UH lead with 3:13 left in the first quarter. McDonald is 10-of-13 for 98 yards, with all three incompletions as drops.

* * * * *

For the second time this season — and second time in two years — the Warriors score on their opening drive. Cole McDonald was 6-for-7 on the drive, with the final 7 yards coming on a scoring toss to Cedric Byrd. McDonald’s only incompletion was a drop — a pass that hit Marcus Armstrong-Brown right on the hyphen.

* * * * *

For the first time since 2007, the Warriors had player introductions before the game. The defense was announced. It appears, from the intros, the Warriors are opening in a 4-3. They aligned in a 4-2-5 last week.

* * * * *

It appears there was somewhat of a slowdown heading toward Aloha Stadium. There might be a significant crowd — 25,000? — today.

Count the UH men’s basketball team among the planned attendees. Eran Ganot said this is one of the planned team activities.

* * * * *

Former UH offensive lineman Dejon Allen was one of the Chicago Bears’ final cuts today. If he’s not claimed on waivers by another team, he will join the Bears’ practice squad, according to agent Kenny Zuckerman.

The Detroit Lions announced the transactions to get to the 53-player roster limit. Lions’ moves. It appears Leo Koloamatangi has made the team. If so, congrats to one of the good guys.

  5. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 4:11 pm

    ITS GAME DAY.

    I’m excited to see how our defense will do today. If we do well defensively and win today. It will give encouragement going into the army game.

    Biggest improvement is supposed to be between week 1 and week 2. So let’s see how our offense will improve and see what other wrinkles they will throw in.

    Also excited to see what this double punter formation is all about.

    Go Warriors!!!
    Beat Navy!!!

    2017 Military Bowl: Navy demolished Virginia 49-7 to finish 2nd rated defense in the AAC.

    Traditionally the “Service Academies” have smaller lineman, but Navy has some really big lineman on this team.

    Offensive starters returning: 4

    Offensive starters lost: 7

    Defensive starters returning: 4

    Defensive starters lost: 7

    Notable Navy Returnees ; OL Jake Hawk, OL Andrew Wood, QB Malcolm Perry, DL Jarvis Polu, DL Jackson Pittman, DB Jarid Ryan, (AAC all-conference honorable mention) Safety/DB Sean Williams

    There is a Local boy from Hawaii that should be starting at RB for Navy, (Iolani Grad, from Ewa Beach) RB Keoni-Kordell Makekau.

    Navy is a 10.5 point favorite to win today.

    Colorado State might end of near the bottom of MWC as evidence by yesterday’s game against Colorado.

    But historically Hawaii plays better at Aloha Stadium against Navy. And Hawaii wearing those Black on Black Uniforms with that undoubtedly the best Hawaii helmet sticker combo “Islands on one side and H Logo on the other side” will bring swag and pride back to Hawaii Warrior Football and the Hawaii Warrior fans as well.

    Maybe Rolo should bring back the Silver Helmets for road games and just drop the White Helmets?

    I’m picking Hawaii to win another thrilling squeaker by 2 points.

    Go Warriors!

    Markus Kemp made the cut too!!!!
    First time in awhile i seen LCC parking lot that full for the game. Excited for game time. Let’s go WARRIORS!!!!!

    Traffic was at a standstill going through main gate. Hope ST’s prediction of 25 K comes true.

  12. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 5:11 pm

    I was thinking just before kickoff that Cole needs to get the wideouts more involved.

    Then he throws a nice ball to jojo ward then another catchable ball to armstrong-brown. That’ll keep the defense honest and from predicting who will get the ball.

  13. LizKauai September 1, 2018 5:17 pm

    Here we go!

  14. Boolakanaka September 1, 2018 5:20 pm

    Really solid start… composed and executing.

    Three TDs on first 3 possessions…good omen!

  18. clyde September 1, 2018 5:45 pm

    This offense is so dynamic. McDonald is 12 for 16, with four dropped passes.

  19. Hilo-warrior September 1, 2018 5:51 pm

    Huge special teams play. Defense is playing great. We need to keep the pedal to the metal. Do not look up to the score board. Let’s post 60 like we used to in the glory days.

  20. Tom-warriornation September 1, 2018 5:55 pm

    Keep your foot on the gas petal Warriors!

  21. Hilo-warrior September 1, 2018 6:15 pm

    I know it may feel like it’s running up the score. But Navy is getting into a groove. We need to keep moving the ball, eating the clock and scoring in order to win.

  22. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 6:20 pm

    Any word on Armstrong-Brown? It looked like he came off for a hand injury and I haven’t seen him since his dropped catch in the first qtr.

  23. kalua pig September 1, 2018 6:50 pm

    i would love to see cordero get in the game.

  24. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2018 7:00 pm

    Hilo-Warrior
    Armstrong-Brown is pau for the game.

  25. clyde September 1, 2018 7:07 pm

    Stephen: Was Ursua on the field to start the second half?

  26. Buffoman September 1, 2018 7:07 pm

    Looks like we’re headed for a scenario like we saw last week. Hope the outcome is the same.

  27. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2018 7:15 pm

    I haven’t seen Ursua

  28. clyde September 1, 2018 7:16 pm

    Yup, he wasn’t in. Kamaka replaced him after he made that clutch catch near the end of the half. Darn, he must be hurt.

  29. Inyoface September 1, 2018 7:19 pm

    Come on don’t let off the gas!

  30. clyde September 1, 2018 7:25 pm

    He’s baaaaack!

  31. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 7:42 pm

    Who has been playing in the wideout position? And hopefully Ursua will be alright.

  32. clyde September 1, 2018 7:48 pm

    Pedal to the metal!🏎

  33. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 7:48 pm

    I’m happy that they got Jojo Ward into the game plan. We need to establish another solid wideout.

    Did Armstrong-Brown break a finger? It kind of looked like that when he tried catching the ball.

  34. Boolakanaka September 1, 2018 8:27 pm

    Another strong outing. Yes, the D lost some momentum, but eventually still did it’s part.

  35. Hilo-Warrior September 1, 2018 8:41 pm

    It almost seems like it’s the Hawaii of the early 2000s. The offense is going to put the points up. But the defense will just need to get one or two stops to hold the other teams offense just a bit.

    I believe new coach, new system, and having to prepare specifically for the triple offense has a lot to do with the inconsistency. But we will be really hard to play against once our defense learns and develops into the defensive system

  36. PONO September 1, 2018 8:44 pm

    I think the turnstile count was 27K. Hopefully it’s above 30K next week. Realistically we could be 6-0 if we can get through Rice who put up a decent fight today and the long road trip to Army. Dusquene is FCS and SJSU lost to a FCS team at home.

  37. Expat September 1, 2018 8:50 pm

    lots of positives in that game… the best stat was 1-5. One penalty for five yards. Outstanding.

  38. dreamcitymike September 1, 2018 9:15 pm

    Focused team, great win …we could be 6 – 0 before Oct. After last weeks upset I was forecasting a run on the schedule! All good in the neighborhood!! Live Aloha, we are warriors!!!

  39. seewhy September 1, 2018 9:17 pm

    I am still in disbelief… #GoBows

  40. dreamcitymike September 1, 2018 9:29 pm

    Pinch me !! Rice had a good showing this week but run & shoot is the equalizer …one game at a time!!

  41. Paniolo September 1, 2018 10:45 pm

    As long as our young Warrior Offensive line keep that protection for Cole McDonald, he will blow the opponent a part with the run and shot. offense.
    So its very important that our OL does not have any letdown in the next game or any of the games on the 2018 football season.

  42. Kahuna September 1, 2018 10:47 pm

    I am concerned about the reserve slot backs. There is a HUGE drop off in talent when Ursua or Byrd leave the game for some reason. Kamaka is a former walk on and is the back up to Ursua. Former TE Dakota Torres is the back up to Byrd. Neither one of them really brings much to the table.

    I would like to see Rolo be a little more creative and move kids around so you always get more than 2 playmakers on the field at the same time.

    If Ursua/Byrd need a blow or get dinged up, I would like to see Rolo move JoJo Ward inside and put guys like Stubblefield/Rooks/Stallworth on the outside to give them more size and keep give Ward a chance to catch short passes and see if he can make YACs and break big runs. Dude has ankle breaking running ability but can’t use it much since he mostly running straight up the field.

    I would also like to see if Rolo can get #82(Justice Augafa)into the rotation. Watching him return kicks, he looks like someone with great opening field running skills.

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2018 11:14 pm

    Happy Days are Here Again! This team has it – they just gotta to keep it!

    Packed stadium! Awesome to see the student section filled! Nice job, coaches and Warriors!
