Warrior Beat: Back in action

UH football got back to practicing for its bowl game. / Photo by Stephen Tsai.

After a week off, the Warriors today worked out for 90 minutes, the first of 15 NCAA-allotted practices in advance of the Dec. 22 SoFi Hawaii Bowl.

UH coach Nick Rolovich said he views the bowl practices as “another spring practice.” The Warriors are using the extra workouts to give meaningful reps to freshmen, redshirts and developing players. Consider this an advance tutorial for next next season.

“You don’t want to waste one opportunity to get better,” Rolovich said. “If we take the foot off the gas pedal at any point in the development of this program, we’ll take a step back, like we did last year.”

The UH basketball team also worked out today after completing a four-game road trip.

The ‘Bows’ next game is next week Saturday against UH Hilo.

Tua might lose the Heismann if he doesn’t improve in this game

Is Tua going to get the belt???🤷🏼‍♂️

  4. Chicken Grease December 1, 2018 2:42 pm

Tua will win the Heismann if Alabama wins (looks like this will happen)

Look. To all naysayers. BOWL TEAMS GET 15 PRACTICES. Maybe a little more or less than this. When in Bowl mode, coaches refer to “15 practices.” Like a mnemonic (another literary/theory device for most of you to learn).

    Thank you.

  5. oldtimer808 December 1, 2018 2:59 pm

I thought Tua should have been replaced earlier due to his injuries. He was not mobile in the pocket and could not get away from the pressure. I’m glad Alabama was able to win the game as well as UFC without Milton McKenzie. Wow another undefeated regular season.

“If we take the foot off the gas pedal at any point in the development of this program, we’ll take a step back, like we did last year.”

Another reason to love this coach!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Terrible day. Needed Memphis to win so an MWC team could land the Access Bowl bid. Memphis blew a 17-point second half lead. Needed Georgia to win so two SEC teams would make the CFP along with Notre Dame, ensuring that three P5 conferences would be shut out from participating and increasing pressure to expand the playoff to 8 teams. Georgia blew a 14-point second half lead. It was like watching two train crashes in slow motion. SMH.

  8. Inyoface December 1, 2018 3:51 pm

If Hawaii was playing in the championship game, they would be playing at Boise in the snow, talk about advantage. Yikes.

  9. cappie the dog December 1, 2018 4:16 pm

Same side, different reason for wanting Central Florida to lose. I did not like the announcer’s comment about the team being more than one player. It’s the wrong comment to make when a player’s career is in jeopardy. I wanted Central Florida to be all about McKenzie Milton. Now they’re going to say that he’s a “system quarterback”. I want MWC representation only if Fresno State wins. I think the blue field is too much of a home field advantage.

Whenever the Fighting Irish are in contention for the College Football Playoff, Notre Dame should be required to play another FBS independent, the independent with the next best record, while everybody else puts their season on the line in a conference championship.

    Army(9-2)
    BYU(6-6)
    Liberty(6-6)
    Massachusetts(4-8)
    New Mexico State(3-9)

    So this year it’s Army.

  10. Old School Dave December 1, 2018 4:54 pm

Wow! Gritty fans at Boise State who stay in their seats in rain and snow.

USU was prepared to offer Matt Wells over $1million, along with a 20% raise for his assistants if he remained there. Shows the benefits of active and supportive boosters, in a rural area, too.

  11. coachdb December 1, 2018 5:17 pm

Announcers said Tedford improved strength training and NUTRITION! Maybe we should improve ours too no more sugary Gatorade and Spam! I’ve been to both teams gyms very impressive top notch recovery drinks and healthy snacks readily available. Time to Step Our Game Up SPEND SOME MONEY!!!

    10. Don’t have 2018 figures, but for 2016-17 which i think includes the 2016 football season, UH spent $16.6 on athletic dept. coaching & staff salaries while Utah St spent $11.1 million.
Utah St.’s total operating revenues was $34.4 million, UH’s was $47.7 million.
Utah St does not have Men’s baseball, volleyball, swimming/ diving but has track/ field & cross country.
They do not have Women’s beach vb, swim /diving, soccer, water polo, sailing, but have gymnastics. They also do not have coed sailing.

Ahem. The coaches know all this. Mnemonically (as I mentioned previously), the practice (pardon the near tautological pun) is referred to—especially by coaches—as “15 practices,” especially when wanting to mention it real quickly to the press. Especially so they don’t have to read a paragraph when bringing up “15 practices.”

    Ask Rolo. Ask Mr. Tsai.

    Thank you.

my last post about the SDSU game — they have speedy DBs who caught UH WRs from the back — other games they wee TDs

much surprised UCF won — Memphis was taking it to them in the 1st half — hope they get a 1/1/2019 bowl game

Dan Monson of Long Beach State should learn from Jeff Tedford.

    Overscheduling does not work.

Fresno State now has a better quality win than Central Florida.

Pat Hill never achieved what Hawaii did.

One challenging non-conference game is enough.

  27. suckkabooya December 2, 2018 1:24 am

    Cappie

Yes. Good idea. All in the interest of fairness. If any Independent program is in the top (lets come up with a reasonable “wrench throwing” number) 6 of the Playoff Rankings (as Notre Dame is this year) then they should (have to/be able to) play the highest ranked team that failed to make their conference championship game (so Michigan at 7 this week). I think that’s fair. It gives them a chance (the Independent) if they’re on the perimeter, or makes them have to “effort” to secure a playoff spot when they’re in. Might help the outlier (Michigan) as well if things fall into place. Hmmm

Against the Bruins, Colina made a shot that startled me.

  40. cappie the dog December 2, 2018 5:04 am

Hawaii will get more open looks at the three.

I think Miah Ostrowski played better than Brocke Stepteau against superior talent.

To this day, I maintain that Ostrowski, had he devoted himself full-time to basketball, would have at worst, made it into the NBA Summer League.

He had the comportment of a point guard.

CoachDB: Fresno State was more physically dominating and better conditioned than Boise State. Coach Tedford’s emphasis on the team’s Strength & Conditioning, along with nutrition has produced results. I hope UH can make similar improvements and gains in the team’s S & C, but it’ll require $$$.

  43. Inyoface December 2, 2018 7:55 am

UCF should play georgia outside the payoffs.

  44. Old School Dave December 2, 2018 8:13 am

So what were the results of the findings from that research trip UH Administrators they took to CSU in August to study CANVAS Stadium? Besides a free trip to Colorado. How long before that roof (to cover spectators) will start to leak in the new Aloha Stadium? Building a shopping center, condos, amusement park, etc will only add more $$$ and delay the completion of the stadium another 5-8 years from the projected completion date.

My 2 cents is to simply build a new stadium on campus and let UH run it. HPD and UH can be creative with traffic control 6-7 a year (limit private vehicles around the campus, make people use the bus, a water shuttle from the West side to town). Build a 38,000 seat stadium with another 3000 capacity in private suites (for sale).

    http://www.kitv.com/story/35080061/consultant-cost-to-build-new-aloha-stadium-at-323-million

  45. Old School Dave December 2, 2018 8:19 am

Oh yeah, make the new on campus stadium more “Makule Friendly” with more elevators, ramps, and easier access – wider, open air suites. Have private restaurants and also the UH CC’s culinary students sell food and operate concessions (Teddy’s, L & L, Zippys, Dominoes, Young’s Fish Market, etc).

  46. Biggestuhfan December 2, 2018 9:02 am

Is there anything to that story that Rolo is being tied to the Utah State job? Saw it on KITV last night. Or is it just the rumors that circulate at this time of year? Rolo was indifferent when asked, making me think that he’s at least been approached. I hope he stays. Looks like we got some momentum going now and he’s matured as a head coach.

I think a lot of voters probably waited until this past weekend to cast their vote. I think many might change their vote to Kyler Murray and I don’t blame them. Tua had a better overall season but this past Saturday was a big Heisman moment for him and he didn’t deliver. It was obvious that it was due to his injury during the game but still it didn’t look good. Kyler Murray on the other hand had a big Heisman moment and lead his team to avenge their only loss of the season to their rival. I personally would still give my vote to Tua since he had a better season but I wouldn’t blame the voters for changing their mind

  48. A-House December 2, 2018 9:49 am

hope the week of rest healed the walking wounded and created a greater resolve to win on 12/22/18!

I don’t know if Rolo is a candidate for the USU job, but $900,000/yr salary + benefits and bonus options hard to turn ones back on if offered, especially when its about twice what he currently makes D1 college football head coach salaries are moving well into the 21st century where an average football head coach salary is approaching $1 million.

    from MWC news …
Bowl destinations have been set for teams in the Mountain West. Here is where they are headed, and what you need to know about each game.

Las Vegas Bowl: Fresno State vs. Arizona State (December 15th, 1:30 MT, ABC)

Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii vs. Louisiana Tech (December 22nd, 8:30 MT, ESPN)

New Mexico Bowl: Utah State vs. North Texas (December 15th, 12:00 MT, ESPN)

Potato Bowl: BYU vs. Western Michigan (December 21st, 2:00 MT, ESPN)

Arizona Bowl: Nevada vs. Arkansas State (December 29th, 11:15 a.m. MT, CBSSports)

Frisco Bowl: San Diego State vs. Ohio (December 19th, 6:00 MT, ESPN)

First Responder Bowl: Boise State vs. Boston College (December 26th, 11:30 a.m MT, ESPN)

Wyoming was not selected for a bowl game.
    ———————————————————-

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

#57 ai-eee-soos It’s true – Rolo is making more than most families in Hawaii. If we compare him with salaries/bonus’ of most coaches in the US, he is one of the lowest paid. The Navy coach makes more than the president of the USA.

If Rolo leaves, who should we hire? If he leaves, would the program be intact or impacted?

Take it or leave it might not be a good option all things considered

  63. Boolakanaka December 2, 2018 3:02 pm

Like most of life’s problems, one would be wisely advised to evaluate our current coach situation with the overview and context of, if we don’t solidify our current, contract situation, do we just place ourselves in the same situation of trying to find someone with a very unique skill set down the road. That’s just a complicated way to say, are we going to be in the same intersection a couple of years down the road.

The answer is easy, of course you give Rolo and his staff a raise—and don’t hesitate about it. I’m sorry, this same mentality of “if you don’t like it, go elsewhere”, has proven itself to be fatal, literally, just look at the crisis the state has in keeping physicians. Bottom line, you got to be pay what the market dictates, if you think not, just wait a little bit and see what kind of product you end up with…

  64. Ichyboy December 2, 2018 3:40 pm

Rolo was hired as a first time head coach. His current contract reflects that. Now it is up to the AD to evaluate his performance and decide how to roll over the contract for the next few years. As we saw, Rolo had his growing pains and made first time head coach mistakes along the way. He got to grow into the job and still has a way to go.

  65. ai-eee-soos December 2, 2018 4:15 pm

I wonder who the Packers have in mind to hire –

a recycled coach, or a full-of-fire younger OC / DC.

  67. A-House December 2, 2018 4:25 pm

well, 49ers came up short, but increased their chances to have the #1 pick which they should trade to another team with, maybe, 2 1st rounders or 1st round and 2 2nd round picks

they really need help at all positions!!!

49er management — start looking and make put out “feelers” to those who may be in dire need of a 1 QB and willing to trade.

  68. Boolakanaka December 2, 2018 4:27 pm

Sorry 64, but at the moment Rolo is at the very bottom of coach salaries in the nation- and I mean that literally -he is second from the very bottom- he and his staff most certainly deserve a raise.

  69. Biggestuhfan December 2, 2018 4:41 pm

#64 – not really up to the AD to determine how much of a raise Rolo gets. He’d like to pay him what current market dictates, but we’ve got University and legislature that doesn’t understand the importance of college athletics and how it elevates the image of the university. Duke as an example is one of the top academic institutions in the nation, but how many more prospective students and their families know about Duke because of their successful basketball team? Just sayin.

  70. Boolakanaka December 2, 2018 4:46 pm

Most of the folks I know that have attended Duke care little about their basketball program- it is not like they went through a deliberation of saying “ hmmm, should I go to Duke law, medicine, divinity or MBA program because of their basketball program ??” It’s a serious institution with serious people, but I get your point…

  71. amela December 2, 2018 7:13 pm

I was thinking, wouldn’t it be something if UH won their last 2 football games. They did and that was the feather in the cap. Great job by the coaches and players for not giving up. GO WARRIORS!

  72. cappie the dog December 2, 2018 7:18 pm

    70.

Northwestern is supposed to be a serious academic institution.

It irks me that they spent close to $270 million to upgrade their athletics facilities.

I don’t think their mission statement is: “Win big in football.”

  73. Savich December 2, 2018 7:40 pm

What do you think, win this one or lose this one?

  74. Savich December 2, 2018 7:43 pm

amela: Obviously not a football fan. UH played UNLV. And that would make it the last 3 games. Because winning UNLV would get them in to the Hawai’i bowl. Then San Diego state, 2, finally Hawai’i Bowl, 3 games. So the last 3 games of play.

  75. Savich December 2, 2018 8:06 pm

How much did they lose to…? 63 to 7. And was it to Notre Dame.

  76. Savich December 2, 2018 8:11 pm

Northwestern is obviously 8-5. But Northwestern cannot win the big game. Notre Dame. So they should be 10-3 or 11-2 or even 12-1. Yes, I’d say Northwestern has let people down.

  77. Savich December 2, 2018 8:14 pm

just like Florida State has let people down.

  78. Savich December 2, 2018 8:15 pm

What about Hawai’i? Hawai’i don’t count. Because the Hawai’i Bowl is not in the p5 conference.

  79. Savich December 2, 2018 8:20 pm

Yes, I agree with cappie. Northwestern is a shitty team. Even the Hawai’i Bowl is better than Northwestern.

  80. Savich December 2, 2018 8:22 pm

spending $270 million dollars would make a dent in the budget. Hawai’i cannot even afford a new stadium. For the same price.

  81. Savich December 2, 2018 8:36 pm

EIS would cost Hawai’i $100 thousand dollars. The stadium would run in the $100 million dollars. A lot less, but still Northwestern should have been 12-1. Hawai’i deserved to be 8-5. So you can see Hawai’i will still be picking shitty players. In 2019, they get to pick 124th in the line up for recruits.

Boolakanaka: You know people who attended Duke? Where? What does he or she do? What did he or she majored in? Or did he just play football and not take any classes?

  83. Savich December 2, 2018 9:12 pm

Just like Kaua’i mayor, played UH football in 1979, Hula Bowl. Do you think he took classes as in glasses, weighing in at 270 ibs. and being 6-6? Playing guard. I don’t think he attended school and took up school courses as in Science and Math courses.

  84. Savich December 2, 2018 9:52 pm

This is Hawai’i. And the topic is football. Football do not study. Does it look like John Ursua does chemistry homework? No. When I ask if you know people from Duke, it is because you don’t play football or you don’t study.

  85. Idunnonuttin December 2, 2018 9:56 pm

Just checking If I’m still here. Yep.

  86. Idunnonuttin December 2, 2018 9:58 pm

I hope Hawai’i wins. 64-7 win over La. Tech.

  87. Idunnonuttin December 2, 2018 10:01 pm

I am a crazy person. I like watching football because I like to broke people face if they act up. Serious.

  88. Savich December 2, 2018 10:05 pm

Alabama just got lucky. That’s all. Bulldogs could not hold them off.

  89. Savich December 2, 2018 10:14 pm

    Howzit?

I think Hawai’i can win this game. But they’ll have to get Pavihi involved. If he doesn’t make any tackles, they’ll lose the game.

Hawai’i vs. La. Tech, Hawai’i Bowl

  90. Da Punchbowl Kid December 2, 2018 10:24 pm

I can remember the last days of JJ and the HF debacle well. I also wondered why the h3ll the legislature and the UH Board of Regents didn’t step up and get things fixed.

As my friend Boola says, it takes a very select skill set to be Hawai’i’s head football coach. Coach Rolovich has that rare and special skill set, and I know he doesn’t want to be the head coach for any where but Hawai’i. Let’s pray that our legislature, government and the leadership at UH have a firm grasp on that.

Start pay raises as soon as possible. No lips service, please, JUST legislation and a firm commitment to the UH Warrior Football/Athletics program.

BTW – if Boola says something, he isn’t exaggerating or lying. He knows a LOT of people. And as a former UH player, his heart is with the Warriors.

Me, I’m still not a bot. And I am so proud of what Rolo has done with this team.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  91. Idunnonuttin December 2, 2018 10:24 pm

I am dumb person. So please, spare the change talk. I dislike you if you don’t know anything.

    Hey, rowdie…ebushckev edues…

John Candy said this in the movie…Splash.

  93. suckkabooya December 2, 2018 11:49 pm

Raise the pay. You could get creative and base it on revenue. Or you could keep it at it’s current base and set incentive bonuses for goals that are attainable and will advance the program. Or you could provide rent free housing or some other form of benefit package. But please raise the pay. It will “payoff” in the long run with this staff.

  94. Savich December 2, 2018 11:58 pm

Wyoming is huge. But they’re crap.

  95. Ichyboy December 3, 2018 12:43 am

#68 The list I checked , Rolo is low on the list but not second to the bottom. (114 out of 130)

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying his pay is adequate for the position and his current performance. Just need to understand when he was hired; he had zero head coaching experience at the division one level. Looks like the original contract had a lot of “bonus” incentives (valued at $1m +) not sure how realistic the goals were but the point I was just making is that the contract may have been fair at the time of signing due to his lack of coaching experience. Remember , there were other coaches that applied (including JJ ) but our AD elected to go with someone he felt could be a better fit for UH in the long run. At the time, it was also a good deal for Rolo, as his pay doubled from what he was getting at Nevada as OC. Now it is up to the AD to pursue a better financing option for football contracts; with the school and funding sources , including state government.

Recall at one time Hawaii paid JJ and his successor $1m contracts that were partially subsidized by boosters.

  96. ai-eee-soos December 3, 2018 1:51 am

    #95.

Rolo was getting about 130K at Nevada.

JJ was getting 800K (400K from UH, 400K from boosters).

    Mack got about 1.2 mill.

that’s the way I remembered it.

    FWIW.

  97. dcwarrior December 3, 2018 4:16 am

#95. Of course Rolo’s initial pay was for a first-time coach. But it was low, even for that. Even 114 is low for a program with a budget which is certainly not the 114th in the FBS.

And so even if your point is to justify the initial low pay. The AD needs to be the one to re-open pay negotiations, and they need to do it quickly. Which does NOT mean do it sloppily, it means do your homework now as to Rolo’s fair market pay and offer that pay BEFORE he starts getting other offers, not AFTER.

David Byrne, lead singer of the Talking Heads, is a highly quotable lyricist. One of his famous phrases is “stop making sense”. It never made any sense to me that the 1.2 million salary was never offered to his predecessor as an incentive to stay.

    Also.

Why did UH hire an AD that left his prior university athletic program in debt? 7.5 million in the red.

Before any team decides to fire their longtime coach with a track record of success, they should take a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers organization.

Bill Cowher missed the post-season for three consecutive seasons.

He made the AFC Championship game in 2001. Finished first in the AFC North the next season.

Then he went four games under .500 in 2003.

    Nobody panicked.

    The owner stayed the course.

And was rewarded with a Super Bowl trophy in 2005.

    Green Bay panicked.

  100. Boolakanaka December 3, 2018 6:23 am

And this is from a couple of years ago, see:https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/gallery/highest-paid-coaches-college-football-salaries-details-contracts-nick-saban-jim-harbaugh-102616

And here is the actual contract, http://www.manoanow.org/head-football-coach-nick-rolovich-contract-terms/pdf_baa9339c-97bb-11e5-9b23-67bb1aae90a2.html

As you can see, some of performance incentives are just plain throw-aways, e.g. national championships, New Years bowl game, playoff series…..So, I don’t give that much deference at all.

    Start of the 2nd century!

Yikes! It has been quite a while.

Wow ! long blog. To Cappie: I got one better than you: Kalani beat Punahou in FOOTBALL at Roosevelt Stadium back in 65 or 66. That was BIG !!! Of course that was the only time Kalani ever beat the Buff n Blue in foots. The soccer one was good too tho !

What a blog. Fleegle Trump and his son Sybil.

to Cappie, we spoke mostly non-colloquial English back in the day. It was very hard to get rid of the pidgin slang. Tried very hard to speak colloquially. I turned out decent speaking colloquially though. If UH should crush Louisiana Tech recruiting will be better. “PEDAL TO THE METAL”.

  105. Maddog50 December 3, 2018 12:27 pm

Boola has it right period-if you have an issue with that-try living the life of one of these guys. I know and have known many, the wild money is out of whack but you have to at least be reasonable in order to attract and maintain quality coaches at the D1 level. Coach Rolovich and staff have won 18 games in 3 seasons and his base is not at NC level. Now it would help if ticket sales improved-your turn-GoWarriors!!!!
