Seeking the next Warriors

Several UH coaches hit the road today for the recruiting push leading to three-day signing period beginning Dec. 20.

* * * * *

A few pics from last night’s team banquet:

Linebacker Russell Williams Jr. and safety Trayvon Henderson, who was named the defensive captain
Linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard was picked as winner of the Warrior Club Award.
Offensive tackle Dejon Allen was named the MVP for offense
Linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who was named the MVP for defense, and Trayvon Henderson

Diocoemy Saint Juste was named the team’s MVP.

But the biggest award went to wideout Devan Stubblefield for being the best dressed:

I have a feeling newly hired UCLA Coach, Chip Kelly, will be looking into recruiting another great quarterback out of St. Louis.

Bigger, faster, (and studious) Warriors – go get ’em!

  3. Akamai Okole November 27, 2017 8:54 am

    Great Morning All!

It was good to see Stubbs get some PT on Saturday

  4. Akamai Okole November 27, 2017 9:11 am

Who was #95 that switched jersey to #57 to play OL in the 2nd half next to Posa?

  5. thomas IX November 27, 2017 9:42 am

Kudos to the person who picked out the awards, very hawaiian themed nicely done and it fits.
I wondered when someone would pick up on this.
    Nuff said.

  6. NotNasti November 27, 2017 12:54 pm

A.O.: I believe #95 was Brandon Kippen, a true frosh who was being used as a blocking tight end, and was pressed into service the last 3 games or so when so many OL’s went down to injury. He has a bright future. Just needs to bulk up a bit.

  7. Da Punchbowl Kid November 27, 2017 1:09 pm

Mahalo nui nui and best wishes to the Seniors! You guys did us proud and will be missed!

I second the first poster – tom – “Bigger, faster, (and studious) Warriors – go get ’em!”

Good luck to coaches and returnees. Work hard!

  8. Big Fan November 27, 2017 1:24 pm

What’s the story on Devan Stubblefield? I thought he was going to be a much bigger factor at UH. At the high school level he seemed to really excel and looked to be in a class by himself as far as receivers were concerned.

  9. DaveLetterMan November 27, 2017 1:52 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
Rumor has it that Chevan Cordeiro might grad from SL in December and enroll at UH in January.

  10. A-House November 27, 2017 2:04 pm

that would be welcome news — shades of Timmy Chang or was it someone else who grad early and enrolled in UH mid-term.

hope UH will allow him to compete immediately if the “back-up” QBs are good, but not good enough to play in all games which was a travesty – how does one expect to get better w/o any game experience — mental reps are good, but not even close to being on the field.

same goes for Panoke and the other St Louis receiver — small in size, but talented!

    RE: #6
    Too many injuries.

  12. SteveM November 27, 2017 3:16 pm

Good luck and best wishes to the seniors!
I am sorry I missed the Senior Walk last Saturday as I left the stadium with 7 minutes left the 4th quarter. I was disgusted and was the last person left in my section.

I was not unhappy about the play or efforts of the athletes. I felt sorry for DSJ who averaged 2 yards per carry…but at least he got enough carries to set a record.

Reading Feed Lewis’s and Dave Reardon’s columns, they told it like it is…and correctly noted that fans would vote by attendance and ticket sales next year. There is much damage control that needs to be done on the coaching staff and its dogma.

When ST writes his “behind-the-scenes-how it- really-was book, this season certainly deserves it own chapter. Other chapters would be the Norm Chow era, Greg McMackin era, several chapters on June Jones and coaching staff, ST’s favorite olympic gold medalist Athletic Director and Mark Takai, the Tsai-kos, the vonAppen era, and Bob Wagner era.

  13. Coach DB November 27, 2017 4:43 pm

Get some REAL SPEED ie. African American kids that can flat out run!!! Put them in the skill positions and develop them!

Then get as many DEFENSIVE LINEMEN as possible and if they don’t pan out as defensive linemen make them offensive linemen.

Control the DEFENSIVE LINE and CONTROL the game!!! Ask AUBURN*

$PEND SOME MONEY and get better assistant coaches !!!!!

  14. Old School Dave November 27, 2017 4:51 pm

Best of luck to the seniors.

Lewis and Reardon gotta sell papers, so they write stuff like that. UH doesn’t have fans. They have spectators who disappear when the team loses.

Ty Detmer out at BYU. Norm Chow and former Utah OC Aaron Roderick have been seen around the BYU Football offices recently and are friends with Sitake.

  15. Akamai Okole November 27, 2017 5:11 pm

My heart went out to Mr. Kipper on Saturday as he was was leaning over for instruction from Posa before every snap…real-time OJT playing out in front of all to see.
It was nice to see him so happy when he was able to zone block a DT with the OG and lead the RB for some positive yardage but so agonizing to watch him get bull-rushed and beat off the edge for sacks. Hats off to Posa for attempting to talk him off the edge after those plays. Tough night for the young man.
Hopefully it is all uphill from there.

  16. Buffoman November 27, 2017 6:02 pm

With “several coaches hitting the road” to recruit, is it safe to speculate that Rolo will keep his staff intact, hiring only for the new 10th slot and coach Naeole’ s vacant position?

If so, that would make for an interesting 2018.

  17. islandman November 27, 2017 6:46 pm

Tumua Tuunei comedy at awards banquet:

  18. Old School Dave November 27, 2017 6:46 pm

June Jones and his staff, particularly new D.C. Kevin Lempa, should have been fired after going 3-9 in 2000 and 9-4 the previous season!

Kevin Sumlin now available. Common UH!!

  19. Trunks420 November 27, 2017 7:00 pm

Wow Fresno state and Boise State are playing again Saturday For The Championship.

    I got Fresno beating Boise 21 28

Also I think Tedford has better W/L record over Rolo.

I don’t see us beating Boise in 20 yrs so Hawaii get use to being The MW punching Bag just looking at the players at the Hawaii banquet showed how bad the energy is in locker room.

  20. What? November 27, 2017 7:42 pm

I was listening to the sports animale on 1420 this afternoon with Rich Miano. He mentioned the coaching staff needs at least one coach who will be the hammer when the student athletes need discipline. Rolo can be a players coach. But, he needs that one coach that won’t take any crap. That sounded like Naeole. He needs that disciplarian on staff.

Chow was a disciplinarian. In the long run, I think players will respect him for that part of his coaching. For him, the wins just didn’t add up. These student athletes are 1- 5 years removed from high school. It’s like in high school, students walk all over teachers that are easy going with little to no discipline. With the strict teachers they cannot get away as much. But, in the long term, students are thankful of the hard teachers. There are exceptions of course.

Overall, the players need a coach that will get on their case when they need it. If not, the players will find a way to get what they want and do it their way instead of the right way. The players need to their part. But, this season, there were several games that it was all on the coaches. Calling timeouts before the half to set up a play, guarding against the onside kick on a kickoff at the 50 yard line and many others that may have changed the momentum of the game. You cannot blame the players for that. Probably a more experienced coaching staff would have done things differently. But, Rolo and the other coaches are learning just like the players. Next season is year 3 for Rolo. I hope he and his assistant’s have learned from their mistakes also. If not, 13.5K will be the norm for home game attendance.

Also, I hope the can do better this recruiting season in February. Didn’t the coaches go zero for … with regards to the top talent in the state? Rolo will be judged by the wins and losses just like every HC. Let’s see if he makes any coaching changes or lands some solid recruits.

  21. Coach DB November 27, 2017 7:53 pm

The best thing Rolo can do is stack 4/5yr players and develop them as soon as possible then raid every JC you can for linemen! Talk some brothers into coming to Hawaii to increase your speed and improve your strength and conditioning programs including your training table.

I hear it’s horrible (SUCKS is the actual phrase), kids from the mainland don’t want SPAM, they want Fried Chicken, Catfish, Corn Bread Mac and Cheese. Look at winning programs training tables they feed those kids well and that doesn’t cost much more but can make a BIG difference!!!

If they can’t get better players out of high school then start developing the ones you have is crucial to the overall success of your program, and if they know they can get some home cooking that might make the difference. Sometimes it’s THE LITTLE THINGS!!!

  22. Old School Dave November 27, 2017 8:43 pm

Oregon State fired Gary Andersen’s entire group of assistants, minus the interim HC. Kevin Clune and Chad Kauhaahaa are out of UH’s salary range, but what about former UH Special Teams & DBs coach Jake Cookus who was a quality control coach for OSU?

  23. Paniolo November 27, 2017 9:21 pm

After going through 2017 losing record because our Warrior coaches, including Head Coach Nick Rolovich was out-coached in every game (that includes the win over San Jose), and to now know that Rolo will retain his coaching staff, I am done with University of Hawaii football program as a supporter and loyal fan.
I just could not take another year with Rolo and his same coaching staff next year. Could not take another year of Rolo’s boring conservative playbook. Could not take another year of Rolo not giving the back up quarterback a chance to play in a game when needed. Could not take another year with Legi as Defensive Coordinator and his defense coaches that practically gave away the home and road games.
Been a supporter and staunch fan since the days of Hawaii football coach Dave Holmes.
I love my University of Hawaii Warrior football team too much to see the program being destroyed another year by the same head coach and coaching staff. I just don’t want to be a part of it as a Warrior football fan.

  24. Ipu Man November 27, 2017 9:58 pm

Mainly I think UH “injuries” were the downfall of this season.
    Not the players.
Not the coach and his staff.
    Not the athletic director.
    Not the governor.

  25. Ipu Man November 27, 2017 10:01 pm

Even professional teams like the Green Bay Packers,
once their linemen went down, they began to lose, too.
    Injuries are the big bugaboo.

  26. cappie the dog November 27, 2017 10:12 pm

“Man, what are you doing here?”

    -Billy Joel

    to Adams State’s Mike Thomas…

  27. Coach DB November 27, 2017 10:36 pm

2ND Time…….this should be EASY to understand folks!!!

The best thing Rolo can do is stack 4/5yr players and develop them as soon as possible then raid every JC you can for linemen! Talk some brothers into coming to Hawaii to increase your speed and improve your strength and conditioning programs including your training table.

  28. Old DIver November 27, 2017 10:37 pm

#21 The problem Rolovich faces is while this is his year two is this was year six of watching a boring conservative offense. Rolo needs to give fans hope for next year and doing the same thing all over again by bringing back the same coaches dashes that hope.

  29. amela November 27, 2017 10:41 pm

Legi seems like a nice guy but his defense sucks. Need to get someone with more experience and it ain’t Cal Lee. High School is way different from college. UNLV, Notre Dame and some others have/had great high school coaches that didn’t bring instant success that the powers above thought they would.

  30. ai-eee-soos November 28, 2017 1:18 am

in case you missed it …

The Big West will expand from nine to 11 members in 2020, the conference announced today, with the inclusions of Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego.
Bakersfield is currently a member of the Western Athletic Conference and UC San Diego is a Division II program that desires to make the transition to Division I.
They will both join the Big West on July 1, 2020, and compete in the conference beginning with the 2020-21 athletic calendar. The UCSD Tritons will begin a four-year reclassification period in 2020 and become a full-fledged D-I member (and a full member of the Big West) in 2024.

  31. Whats up November 28, 2017 1:26 am

Bring Back Tony Tuioti, that Brudda can recruit!

    Mens Sports: Hawaii Warriors
    Women’s Sports: Rainbow Warrior Women

  32. cappie the dog November 28, 2017 4:28 am

How do you recruit kids to play for a program that isn’t eligible to participate in the NCAAs?

Incarnate Word, during their ongoing transition process, beat both Nebraska and St. Johns.

What is wrong with the Big West?

Now they have an odd number of teams again; now Big West opponents can continue to visit Hawaii without having to play a Thursday game.

Utah Valley, Southern Utah, or Seattle can be the 12th team.

  33. islandman November 28, 2017 6:50 am

    26. UH attempted to pass on 71 % of the plays in the BYU game. It gets boring even with a lot of passes, if you can’t score much.
Dru completed 73 % of his passes in the game.

  34. RSYmoney November 28, 2017 7:57 am

#21 Hey Paniolo, How can you say you are a loyal fan but quit on the team? Good luck milking cows or whatever you will do doing on Saturday afternoons. I bet we see you posts again next year when we start winning.

  35. Old Diver November 28, 2017 9:06 am

#31 There is a difference between wanting to pass and being forced to pass. Not unusual for a running team to pass more when behind.

  36. islandman November 28, 2017 9:26 am

    33. From UH’s first drive, they were passing most of the time.

  37. What? November 28, 2017 9:26 am

I hope the coaches give Chevan Cordeiro an opportunity to see what he can do on the field. Also, I hope Rolo opens the QB competition and leave it open until several weeks before the start of next season. If either of the Cole’s or Cordeiro or whoever can beat out Dru Brown, then so be it. Some of the other QB’s might not be at the place Brown is at this point in regards to the offense. But, maybe they have a higher ceiling and more potential than Brown.

    2016: 7 – 7 with a Hawaii Bowl win
    2017: 3 – 9
    2018: ???

I think Rolo should see year 3 and 4 because of the Hawaii Bowl win. Contract negotiations regarding Rolo’s contract will be here soon enough. Will he get it done? Let’s find out.

At this point, I would settle for an 8 – 4 or 7 – 5 season and a Hawaii Bowl invite again. A 12 – 0 season would be nice but not probable. I am still debating to renew season tickets or go back to PPV. But, I must say the experience of seeing the game up front and in person cannot be captured by watching it on TV. The only inconveniences sometimes are the workers at the stadium. Ask them a question and they chop off your head for asking. I assume some of them are nice. But, some, wow I just asked a question.

Without seeing the schedule for next season, I think it will be a better season. I’ll be listening to call the coach show tonight on 1420.

  38. islandman November 28, 2017 9:36 am

    33. And they were only behind by either 7 or 6 points for most of the
first half. The UH running plays were apparently shut down by BYU too.

  39. ai-eee-soos November 28, 2017 9:43 am

    2018 schedule.

13 straight games – no bye week.

Will we have the depth to handle this schedule ?

  40. A-House November 28, 2017 10:40 am

I suppose Rolo did not substitute for DSJ because he wanted him to be #1 RB for most yards in a season — which occurred, but did it hurt the team by not allowing the other RBs to gain field experience? me tinks so!

is the priority to set records or win games? remember the 4 WRers on the 2007 team where each gained over a 1,000 yards and Carl Benson created a special award for them?

Brown’s 73% passing efficiency against BYU — will Rolo use that as a reason to keep him #1 QB for 2018? it would be a big mistake.

  41. islandman November 28, 2017 10:56 am

UH had a hard time making the play(s) to score. Here and there they rolled up yardage but did not score enough through most of the season.

  42. PONO November 28, 2017 11:01 am

If Unga comes back next year I hope he gets his head screwed on right. He’s a talent but he makes terrible decisions and is not a leader. If Cordeiro signs I’ll be stoked. I’m also really high on Moussa and Bethley. Holly and Bethley might be a nice combo.

  43. Inyoface November 28, 2017 12:29 pm

I don’t think we can pass up on local quarterbacks anymore.

  44. suckkabooya November 28, 2017 12:47 pm

I think the Defense needs a “situational swim technique” DL (like David Tanuvasaa, Kila Kamakawiwo’ole, Al Aliipule) and use him (in spots) in a four man front package to cause disruption without having to put too many players up into the box. Padello is that guy right now but you can only use him outside. He is a playmaker for sure but only in certain spots. We need one in the interior. As the season went on I think the defense evolved somewhat using stunts and twists on the DL instead of over aggressive blitz packages. We just need to execute better. I am optimistic for next years defense, we just need Tavai to stay.

  45. suckkabooya November 28, 2017 1:01 pm

    # 13

I remember listing to a game on the radio while I was working and Bobby Curran felt so much angst for Adrian Klemm because he was having a really bad game as a young player. Duress brings out the best in young people especially with the right mentoring. Yep hats off for sure to Posa for his patience and to Kipper for his toughness. Klemm turned out to be pretty good.

  46. What? November 28, 2017 1:23 pm

Hawaii should go back to the system offenses like the run and shoot or Paul Johnsons triple option. A lot of teams in the P5 conference use the run pass option offense. UH should go to an offense teams don’t see every week. I was not in favor of a triple option offense. But, if that gives UH the best chance to win, then I pick the offense that gives the team the best chance to win.

Also, I cannot say it enough, open up the QB competition. If Rolo stays with his offense, then use a QB who can run and is not afraid to tuck it and run when the opportunity presents itself.

Let’s go Warriors! Recruit, recruit and recruit.

  47. SteveM November 28, 2017 2:01 pm

Well, injuries were a factor. If it is true the 2nd and 3rd team is not “ready” to play the offense, then one should play an offense they can handle. Would DSJ have done better in a flexion or triple option offense? Would that also open up the “surprise” pass?

I am down on the coaching staff because running the same plays with “not ready” players is suicide. Ideally they they would change it up once in a while.

Meanwhile I think the defense did a little better but seeing them reminded me of Jerry Glanville’s “big bag” and that he is credited as being one of the developers of the 3-4 defense in the NFL. Greg McMackin wrote a book on the defensive secondary. I guess they, Tomey, and Wagner set our defensive expectations very high.
