Rolo delivers

Last week, Liholiho Elementary School principal Christina Small received two large boxes filled with 25 balls. Footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, and “rubber balls for the little keiki,” Small said.

The return address was from UH head coach Nick Rolovich.

“We spent a week trying to figure out: how did we get this?” Small said.

Teachers and officials eventually learned that student Cadie Watanabe was the recipient of “Aloha Bucks” on the Call the Coach radio show two weeks ago. The way it works is Rolovich gives $100 to a recipient, who then uses the money to pay it forward. Cadie wanted to use the money to buy balls for her school. Rolovich told her to use the money for something else and he would take care of the balls.

Rolovich then bought and sent the balls to the school.

“It was a wonderful gesture of Cadie,” Small said. A thank-you picture of students posing with the balls was sent to Rolovich.

Great article. Rolo is one hell-of-a-guy. Having said that. It’s Friday, the day before the Warriors play the Aztecs from San Diego.,,,looking for a great game and a win. Go Warriors !!!

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
We have had a bunch of great coaches but really haven’t been willing or able to hold on to them. We have had a lot of coaches “make a name” for themselves and move on to greener pastures…pun intended.
Leadership is intent on keeping the lid on the athletic budget. Which is what they supposed to do. Other big time programs have very generous boosters who have deep pockets and are willing to reach down deep. Not so here.
We have quality people in our program with quality scholar athletes representing.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

Everyone going to the game, be sure you park
within the white lines. Someone said they got
a ticket for being just an inch over… I know it
is hard to open the doors without banging into
    your neighbor, so be nice.

A great donation by Coach Rolo!
I worked with Liholiho school 20 years ago and am surprised Christina Small is still the principal…great stability and vision for a small public school in an old neighborhood. The balls would be truly appreciated and well used.

Forget about just coaching football. Rolo needs to run for Governor. We need a guy like him to lead this state. He’s someone who could inspire a whole cross section of people. From every generation to all levels of the socio-economic sector. For realz.

NorthShoreFan — human nature to advance to greener pastures. JJ had it right with his “over the hill” assistant coaches like Mouse Davis, Greg McMackin, Jerry Glanville, and Dick Tomey. Media didn’t laugh at them when you have 200 years of college and pro coaching experience and an average age of around 60.

Likely they came as a favor to JJ, who probably promised them it would be fun to ride together again. They certainly didn’t come for the money and even Mac was going to leave with JJ until he stumbled into a million $ contract.

So maybe an old, financially secure coach who is here for the challenge and the island life is okay. They will probably stay as long as a rising star coach.

Remember to park “within” the white lines
at Aloha stadium. Sometimes it takes me
    two or three tries.

  14. A-House October 27, 2017 1:12 pm

now, if only the position coaches and players can match Rolo’s commitment we’d have a heck of a team and a much more interesting won/loss recorrd

i introduced myself to Mr. Rolovich at the UCLA tailgate as we have a mutual friend in a retired fire boat captain who plied his trade in the “bay” and thanked him for getting us an autographed picture of Coach Rolo in his UH uniform — very kind and gracious man.

  15. turfwar October 27, 2017 1:15 pm

Posters on Volleytalk mentioned about a mass layoff at the StarAdvertiser and hoping Cindy will hold onto her job covering Wahine Volleyball. Anyone here know anything about this?

Logically speaking! Logic would think that San Diego State overwhemingly has Hawaii’s number over the years. Most of the games have been blowouts in SD St.s favor. The last time UH beat San Diego State was in 2002, at Aloha Stadium 41-40 when June Jones was coaching. Logic would say that Hawaii’s defense is averaging allowing 37+ points per game. Logic, being San Diego St. is a pretty good team, that San Diego State would score at least 37+ points if not more. Last year, it was San Diego St. 55-0 at QualComm, a game that I went to and we were soo bad it was like a horror movie. Logic says that Hawaii does not play well on national television, especailly on the ESPN network. Tomorrow’s game is on ESPN2. Logic would say that San Diego State will beat the spread by 9 to 10 points, and a logic score would be around 37-20. People say that there is hope because San Diego State lost their last 2 games at home against Boise State, and Fresno St. As it turns out, Boise St. and Fresno St. are 2 pretty good teams in the Mountain West and they could be playing in the MWC Championship. So, logic would say that Hawaii is not in Boise St. or Fresno State caliber right now, based on performance.

But, the game is not played based on logic so what’s going to happen. I don’t know, but I do know that if Hawaii will win this game it will be short of an absolute miracle. Yes, I want a miracle.
In football, S….t happens! We saw that yesterday, Oregon State almost beat Stanford in Corvallis. Moral victory will not make me happy. Just win baby! Let’s pray!!!!

Rolovich just “gets it.” Underpaid, but much appreciated.

Excluding last yearโ€”28-14, 20-10, 28-21 (OT) all won by SDSU. Not exactly blowouts-GoWarriors

  20. NorthShoreFan October 27, 2017 3:03 pm

SteveM….roger that. Coaching talent is something one would want to “test” in other markets. Good success at a lower level leads to greater opportunities in “tougher” markets. Natural progression of things. This is why many talented Hawaii athletes chose to join power conferences. I like it when we schedule power conference schools to see where we are occasionally.
Hoping to keep Coach Rolo here for a looong time.

This is not a game I pick the Hawaii Warriors to win, SDSU is going to try prove a point after that embarrassing shellacking they got from Boise. This one might get out of control early with the key players out due to injury and if the Warriors defense doesn’t get it together.
