FINAL: Washington overpowers Hawaii, 52-20.

Richard Newton scores his third TD of the game, an 8-yard run with 8:08 to play, to widen Washington’s lead to 52-20.

The Warriors have scored 20 points in a row to close to 38-20 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.

Cedric Byrd catches a 4-yard pass from Cole McDonald to cut the deficit to 18 points. McDonald was stopped short on the two-point attempt.

The Warriors open the second half the way they ended the first half — with a Miles “Bam Bam” Reed touchdown.

Reed goes seven yards to close the Warriors to 38-14 with 9:16 left in the third quarter.

It’s now 38-0 as Washington kicker Peyton Henry connects from 23 yards.

* * * * *

Three drives, three TDs for Washington.

This time, Jacob Eason goes 28 yards to true freshman Puka Nacua for a 21-0 lead with 6:02 left in the opening quarter.

It took only 76 seconds for the Huskies to take a 7-0 lead. Jacob Eason’s 47-yard scoring pass to tight end Hunter Bryan capped the opening drive.

* * * * *

On the second play of the game, safety Khoury Bethley is ejected for targeting.

During an emotional team meeting last night, the Warriors received a call from Dayton Furuta, who underwent ankle surgery on Wednesday. Furuta asked that quarterback Cole McDonald take his place as team captain.

We’re a little more than an hour away from kickoff at Husky Stadium. Here are some key matchups:

> UH receivers vs. UW secondary: The Huskies’ base is a five-DB secondary, led by safety Myles Bryant. He is the only returning starter in the group. Corners Keith Taylor and Kyler Gordon are long and fast. But the Huskies have not forced a turnover this year, and they will be challenged to defend the Warriors’ speedy receivers. Look for Melquise Stovall to get some extended playing time at slotback. That would put three of the fastest Warriors on the field at the same time. Slotback Cedric Byrd and right wideout JoJo Ward are burners.

> UW running backs vs. UH’s run defense: Tailbacks Salvon Ahmed and Sean McGrew are both speedsters with quick-cut moves. Receivers Andre Baccellia and Chico McClatcher also get handoffs or pitches on jet sweeps. The Warriors allowed an average of 220.5 yards in their first two games, including 5.1 yards per first-down carry.

> UH vs. Mother Nature: The Warriors have prepared for the possibility of rain, conducting what they termed “wet-day” practices and drills. In particular, UH has tried to make sure quarterback Cole McDonald and center Taaga Tuulima will be able to handle wet conditions.

That was a miss-call by the officials. The re-play showed Bethley led with his shoulder. And as I write, UDub scores easily. Oh boy.

  14. Buffoman September 14, 2019 2:26 pm

Wow, a butt whooping in progress. Would be a good thing to at least be somewhat competitive.

  15. clyde September 14, 2019 2:26 pm

Eason throwing from a clean pocket. No pressure, clear sight lines. UW dominating trenches on both sides.

  16. Andrew September 14, 2019 2:27 pm

This is a complete embarrassment so far. when you have Eastern Washington putting up a better fight than Hawaii that’s jus embarrassing.

  17. NorthShoreFan September 14, 2019 2:27 pm

Wanderlust?…freaking out at the stadium? Need to wake up….

  18. H-Man September 14, 2019 2:33 pm

Totally outplayed in all phases. I am going to find something else to do.

  19. sackkabooya September 14, 2019 2:36 pm

Definite adjustment period without Furuta. Got to figure this out. Figured this would happen so not surprised but this is a perfect opportunity to try out everything/everybody. Especially second half. Pride on video to study. Don’t freak out, this is a chance to figure things out going forward.

  20. sackkabooya September 14, 2019 2:45 pm

Uahinui, Keliiliki, Rittner, Panoke, Mardner, Victor, O-line second unit, Fiso, Ho-Ching. Lots to get on video. No worries yet unless it gets worse than at Michigan. But we need to see the big picture and shake this off.

  21. Buffoman September 14, 2019 2:45 pm

Are we that far away from being able to compete with upper echelon teams? This game this far seems to indicate so.

  22. Whitey September 14, 2019 2:47 pm

It is going to be a long day. So best to go look for gold. Brought 62 potential gold so might be time to find out if you have gold or iron pyrite. This is non conference so time to seriously look for gold.

  23. barrettg September 14, 2019 2:53 pm

Guys, relax and and enjoy. Washington will put in theri scrubs, we will make a few late scores, and a bunch of fans will write, “our boys nevah give up. we kept fighting till the end”. Of course if the situation were reversed. the same fans would write ” they scored in garbage time after we took our foot off the gas”.

  24. hilorain September 14, 2019 2:54 pm

Did Ward play in the first quarter?

  25. Whitey September 14, 2019 2:58 pm

The warriors avoiding the long ball game is killing themselves. Washington isplaying soft and giving the short pass cause Hawaii has not shown any long ballthreat.

  26. NorthShoreFan September 14, 2019 3:03 pm

    Second half…different story….major comeback!

  27. sackkabooya September 14, 2019 3:06 pm

If they can (Rolo and staff) use this the right way it can be a foundational piece in this Phase II process. June went through this in his Phase II (around 2004-2005). Seemed 2006-2007 was phase III and UH still got dominated by physically superior team, same like today. Got a ways to go to become Phase III proficient but everything is on track. Get a chance to see what you got on your bench/roster and move forward. I feel like Rolovich will figure things out. This team will realize that winning takes more effort that they thought. And in the end finish with 9,10 or 11 wins, all because they learned things about themselves from this game. Don’t freak out everybody.

  28. sackkabooya September 14, 2019 3:18 pm

The talent gap between UH and teams like Washington (entire Pac 12 actually) will tighten in the coming years. We may lose but will be competitive on the road. And maybe an even game at home against these lower top 25 teams (depending on how Matlin handles promotional side) as the Stadium fills. I can see it. Its just a matter of talent, on the road, with Washington coming off an embarrassing loss.

  39. Whats Up September 14, 2019 4:59 pm

Chris Peterson always out coached Hawaii coaches… except June Jones in 2007. It not like Chris Peterson didn’t coach against Hawaii RnS when McMackin was head coach/Rolo was OC and stomped them with Boise State. No one should be surprised Hawaii got outcoaches by Chris Peterson.

  40. Kawika September 14, 2019 4:59 pm

Donavan Dalton = 8 tackles. Good job!

Nice to finally see Hekili Keliikii near the end of the game. Hope to see more of him.

I needed a calculator to figure the best score guesser, but it was A View from Afar who was only off by 24 points of the actual scores of each team.

cappie the dog and Bigwave96744 were a distant second tied with 32 points off, but Cappie the dog wins the tie-breaker by being closest to the actual U.H. score.

Last week’s winner was only 8 points off. Hope we get closer next week. Yes, I’ll do it again next week since everyone showed great poise.

  42. Markazulu September 14, 2019 6:33 pm

This is what i expected. Figure hawaii would lose but always try to have that faith in a victory. Hawaii was just outmatched at least they fought until the end.

  43. Whitey September 14, 2019 6:58 pm

The warriors game plan played right into the Huskies game plan. Somehow, Uh somehow forgets that playing Washington is almost like playing Boose. Same coaches and same type of players and game plan. Was this a winnable ame. Yes, but need a mental change when you play a Coch Chis Peterson team. You have to make adjustments in game and players.. the Warriors have a very good team, but …….

  44. Inyoface September 14, 2019 7:19 pm

  45. Honu888 September 14, 2019 7:27 pm

3-1 sounds about right. Tough to beat a Peterson coached team. Sad thing is that they didnt seem motivated enough. Fire em up coaches!! Part of the job!

  48. Lopaka43 September 14, 2019 9:06 pm

    Aloha, Tsaikos!

Personally, I was not surprised that Washington dominated us. After all, we struggled to beat Arizona and Oregon State, and last year Washington was the Pac-12 champion in 2018 and went on to play Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Prior to the start of the season, if you had told me that we would beat Arizona and Oregon State and lose to Washington in the first three games, I would have said that was great news.

I still feel that way. Our team found ways to beat Arizona and Oregon State and had some success at times against a really good Washington team. Those experiences can be building blocks for the rest of the season, helping point the way to a winning season, success in the Mountain West, qualifying for a bowl, and recruiting talented local and Mainland players to keep building the program.

I was especially proud that although we fell far behind early in the game, the team fought back and scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second and third quarter.

I am looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish in the next part of the season based on what they have learned from these first three games. I think, individually and as a team, they have great potential.

I believe the day is coming when they will be as good as any of the past Hawaii teams. With everybody on the same page, on offense and defense, there is no reason why we couldn’t have another year like 2007 when we came back to beat Washington even though we were down by three touchdowns in the first half, and matched scores with Boise State until we pulled away in the second half.

We aren’t there yet, but we are a lot closer to that level than we have been for years. I think we can get back to being at that level again with these coaches and these players

    Go Bows!! Go Warriors!!

  49. NorthShoreFan September 14, 2019 10:47 pm

#48 … Roger dat. Growing pains and it will get better. Next week we see what kind of character we got. Hang the head or bounce back with a fury. I think the latter. Saw some good things/personnel. 2-1…didn’t think so at this point so lets get it on Warriors!
Now…got to think of next week score….hmmm…

  50. Whitey September 15, 2019 3:02 am

Good morning Tsaikos. Game results was poor, but the Warriors will do fine this year. The O and D lines were good and will definitely get better. Too many of the reserves are not playing, so they are not given an opportunity to show their game skills. With all the positives about the QBs from Farrington, I thought we would get to see him play last night, but no was relegated to the bench. Somehow the word F……….tism keeps coming up during the game. Going outside the box is a very weak point of the coaches when it comes to playing the reserves. Another weakness is the inability to make game adjustments as the game starts and is being played. A very strong positives is the Warriors are doing a great job on eliminating penalties. The targeting penalty last night was a home penalty for the PAC 10 team. Officials did not want the PAC 10 to be a close game and lose their status and ranking. Look at game film and see how Washington got away with holding and never got called till the game was secured. The players are to be commended for giving a good effort.

  51. Inyoface September 15, 2019 3:53 am

Not sure why cordeiro was taken out of the game I thought he was moving the ball down the field and he never throws interceptions. Not his fault the we can’t get field goals.

  52. H-Man September 15, 2019 4:12 am

Most disappointing was the ease Washington ran through our D. I didn’t expect this. Plus Jacob Eason passed with pin-point accuracy. Our offense? What happened? Maybe Rolo can explain how Washington shut down the run n’ shoot. Or is the answer as simple as they just had better players. Oh well, put this game behind us and focus on conference.

  53. Akamai Okole September 15, 2019 4:37 am

I had to chuckle. Us Rainbow Warrior fans can be thankful we don’t have UCLA’s problems with a 92,000+ person stadium. … “UCLA gave away tickets to Oklahoma game, but fans still didn’t show up” … “UCLA announced an “attendance” of 52,578, although it seems like many of the 75,000 people who were “issued” tickets decided to stay home.” … “This comes on the heels of just 36,951 showing up to watch UCLA lose to San Diego State last week. That was the program’s worst home attendance figure in 25 years.”; https://www.yahoo.com/sports/ucla-gave-away-tickets-to-oklahoma-game-but-fans-still-didnt-show-up-135550368.html

  58. Luki September 15, 2019 3:03 pm

Thought at this point we would be 0-3, and focus our sights on MWC play, but here we are at 2-1. Huskies were just more next level talented than we are and hopefully set the bar for us to be up there one day. Got to see a glimpse of 2nd and 3rd tier guys get in the mix which was great. Liked that they played hard into late in the game.

  59. Boolakanaka September 15, 2019 4:33 pm

Lick our wounds, learn from mistakes, and move on…..if anybody said 2-1, after three PAC-12 teams, you would say brudhha, stop with the next round and sober up….we are in a good position to still have a special season…a 9-10 win regular season is certainly doable. Holumua!

  66. justsomeguy September 16, 2019 4:35 am

Curious to see how fast the faith faded with certain people here…..

Washington is an elite team. Peterson is one of the best coaches in all of football, a significant portion of their roster is 4-star recruits, Jacob Eason is in all likelihood a first round pick in the 2020 NFL draft (Not to mention LT Trey Adams and C Nick Harris), and their athletic budget is 3-4 times that of UH.

Anyone who thought we were going to go out and run step for step with them was simply misguided.

The fact that we’re 2-1 right now is a HUGE plus. We could easily be 0-3. We should be thankful for the success we’ve had so far this year and support Rolo, the staff, and the student-athletes as they work to dial things in for conference play.

  67. Andrew September 16, 2019 6:35 am

The home game this coming week will be lucky to get 20,000 fans. For one it’s an FCS opponent and the walk up crowd isn’t going to come after a blow out loss on national TV. The Nevada and Boise State road trips will be crucial in deciding if UH will compete for an MWC west title and what the attendance will be for the remainder of the season. Beating Nevada is a must. Boise will be tougher obviously but they’re not invincible as some year past. They need at least a split though. Going 0-2 and the MWC year is pretty much done and don’t expect anything more than 22,000 fans the rest of the year.

  68. islandman September 16, 2019 8:29 am

Central Arkansas is ranked (per cappie) #14 in the FCS Poll and has beaten an FBS school this season, Western Kentucky, 35-28.
Eastern Washington is #13 in the FCS Poll and lost by a comparable score to Washington, 47-14.- We lost 52-20 to UW.

  69. Inyoface September 16, 2019 9:58 am

I think Meskell needed competition during fall instead of the starting job the whole time.

  70. Matty boy September 16, 2019 10:49 am

This Saturday could be considered a trap game for UH.
We know they could have played better against UW, but that is probably the best team they will play all year, possible bowl game included.
Think back to the start of the season: 99% of us would have jumped at being 2-1 after the first three games.
And it’s not about coaching—–when you have Hawaii’s #1 defensive player (Tuitele) not even being in the 1-2 rotation at UW, that tells you the level and depth of their talent!
You can’t coach speed, size and quickness.
Let’s come out for homecoming and support the team on Saturday.
They need a boost before hitting the road for some tough MWC openers.

  71. Andrew September 16, 2019 11:13 am

    70.

Agreed. UCA is a good team. This is an absolute must win. After the loss against UW, UH really needs momentum going into a crucial road trip @Nevada and @ Boise State. A loss here could really deflate the season

Is this weekend game on television? If so how can we watch on the mainland?

A large problem on the long pass plays was the use of Padello. He alone makes the coverage better by applying pressure. In the Oregon St. game he rushed on almost all anticipated passing situations. That second half adjustment helped slow down Oregon St’s offensive momentum. I seen one pressure in the Washington game video. He was usually dropping back in (zone) coverage. Waste time. He needs to rush. I hope there will be some adjustment with Padello’s use or maybe develop another rush disruptor by mid-season. The coverage was not bad except for the Huskies first touchdown. Eason seemed very comfortable and able to stare down/check down targets without worry. Gotta adjust. Can do.

Miles Reed was awesome in defeat. He ran hard and blocked hard. He missed a flat pass catch but it was short side and might not have had much room for YAC. Keep that play on the regular rotation and use it more. But it was his horizontal jump cut on the second touchdown was unreal. Off the handoff Reed aimed for the C-RG hole. He quick cut (seemed designed) to the opposite guard then got to outside LT and quick cut vertically, then scored. Unreal. I hope Rolovich has another jump cutting RB on his recruiting list. That and a blocking “hammer” big FB/RB. nice to have a jump cut back like San Diego St. always has.

This is the popularity gap between the NFL and MLB.

I had no problem finding a Jahlani Tavai highlight package. I found multiple ones. I enjoyed the sack. I enjoyed the forced fumble at the goal line.

I can’t find Josh Rojas’ home runs as a Diamondback.
