Behind Chevan Cordeiro, Hawaii scores 21 points in a row to defeat UNLV, 35-28, and clinch a berth in the Hawaii Bowl.

In what is becoming the Miracle of Salt Lake Boulevard, Chevan Cordeiro throws his third TD (in three possessions) to boost UH to a 35-28 lead with 1:25 to play.

This time, Cordeiro goes 68 to John Ursua.

The Warriors have scored 22 points in a row since Cordeiro entered.

Two drives, two TD passes for Chevan Cordeiro.

After UH makes a dramatic midfield stop on fourth-and-1, Cordeiro guides the Warriors down the field. Cordeiro hits JoJo Ward who makes an over-the-shoulder catch with his tippy toes just inside the end zone. It’s tied at 28 with 4:23 to play.

* * * * *

Chevan Cordeiro comes off the sideline to throw a 64-yard scoring pass to JoJo Ward and then fires a 2-point pass to John Ursua to close UH to 28-21 with 11:42 to play.

* * * * *

The Rebels parlayed Cole McDonald’s second pick into a 21-yard scoring drive and a 28-13 lead with 14:21 to play.

Armani Rogers, playing for the time in seven games, threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Evan Owens for the TD.

* * * * *

The Warriors stop Lexington Thomas for no gain on fourth-and-1, the third second-half drive the Rebels have failed to score.

* * * * *

Cole McDonad goes 3 yards on a keeper for a touchdown to close UH to 21-13 with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

McDonald set up the scoring play with two fourth-down completions.

* * * * *

Ryan Meskell’s FG from 41 yards closes UH to 21-6 at the intermission.

In the first half, UNLV rushed for 158 yards and controlled the clock for 17 minutes, 3 seconds. Lexington Thomas has rushed for 101 yards on 15 carries.

* * * * *

Lightning stikes twice.

Lexington “Lightning” Thomas goes 45 yards up the middle for a TD to extend UNLV’s lead to 21-3 with 2:22 to play in the first half.

* * * * *

Lexington Thomas is stopped — and then unstopped — as he scoots 12 yards for a TD and a 14-3 UNLV lead with 7:29 left in the first half. UH has no answer for the Rebels’ multiple running game.

* * * *

Backup tight end Noah Bean catches a 9-yard scoring pass from Max Gilliam caps a 17-play drive and gives UNLV a 7-3 lead with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

* * * * *

Ryan Meskell converts a field goal from 36 yards to give UH a 3-0 lead with 8:04 left in the first quarter.

* * * * *

Warriors open with a revised line: LT Ilm Manning, LG J.R. Hensley, C Kohl Levao, RG Solo Vaipulu, RT Joey Nuuanu-Kuhiiki

For senior night, these things are at stake for the 6-5 Warriors:

> A winning 13-game regular season.

> The Pineapple Trophy.

> A berth in the Hawaii Bowl.

OK,OK, there’s a little holdup on that one. The Mountain West said the bowl invitations will wait until Dec. 2. And that teeny tiny fine print indicates that UH, despite a Hawaii Bowl tie-in for a winning regular season — it says so right in the UH release — isn’t a for-sure thing. It is but it isn’t, I guess.

UNLV’s top offensive threat is running back Lexington “Lightning” Thomas. He earned the handle after Spectrum analyst Rich Miano called him “Lightning” during a 2016 telecast. Before today’s game, Thomas and Miano met for the first time.

    20. Previous post. The last i heard was they were going to redshirt Dru this season.

  5. Boolakanaka November 17, 2018 6:02 pm

Hmmmn, how does one “redshirt” a graduate transfer?

  6. islandman November 17, 2018 6:08 pm

I’m not an expert, but i think he can redshirt as long as he didn’t redshirt before.

Where’s the defender? He was wide open.

Hawaii has given up 40 or more points per game this season 6 times. We have given up 195 points in the 4 games prior to UNLV. We give up 202 YPG, ranked 102nd of 129 teams. We have some real issues stopping the run both at the line and at the 2nd level.

I am hoping that Hawaii recruits a lot of lineman on both sides of the ball. Remember Tomey and JJ? We used to load up on O-lineman and D-lineman, as both head coaches knew that the game was won at the line of scrimmage. GO BOWS!

  10. 808bowler November 17, 2018 6:53 pm

    Lets see Moussa

Our D makes every opposing QB look like a superstar

  15. Buffoman November 17, 2018 7:02 pm

  22. Buffoman November 17, 2018 7:15 pm

This team is not playing like they deserve a bowl invitation. They would be embarrassed if they played in a bowl. We simply cannot make a defensive stop. And offensive? Terrible.

  29. 808bowler November 17, 2018 7:27 pm

  30. anywaaaays!! November 17, 2018 7:30 pm

when did cole mcdonald get so inaccurate?

  31. azwarrior22 November 17, 2018 7:36 pm

It’s pretty sad when the commentators are talking about our field goal kicker. We need TD’s, not FG’s.

  32. azwarrior22 November 17, 2018 7:39 pm

Better light a fire with the boys at half-time cuz we have no offense and no defense…can’t win if we can’t score or keep the other team from scoring 🙁

  33. UH FAN November 17, 2018 7:39 pm

Maybe need some Crusader magic. Put in Cordeiro. In the Games they win, the defenses they played didn’t know Hot to adjust to the run& shoot. In their losses, those defenses knew the scheme and forced McDonald to throw early or not accurately. Roll, good assistant coach. As a head coach, to buddy-buddy with the team. Thus discipline is a problem. Also his assistants lack experience. But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

  34. islandman November 17, 2018 7:42 pm

When we run the Run n Shoot, it doesn’t work too.

  35. suckkabooya November 17, 2018 7:44 pm

Pass should set up the run. That’s it. Put Furuta in to block only and throw the f’ken ball every play. Enough of this shit. UNLV is so junk. Come on now.

  36. brownpaperbagfan November 17, 2018 7:46 pm

This is why fans don’t want to see this team. My blood pressure is going through the roof! I don’t care if we lose but put up a good fight. The beginning of the season we were scoring with this offense, then for some reason….mehh. Is Rolo trying to put his twist on the run-and-shoot that hasn’t worked in the past few years? Sometimes smart people are too smart for their own good. Just use what works. Score 35 points a game, win or lose and I guarantee fans will be back. Until then… I will stop watching when we are down 21- 6.

  37. 808bowler November 17, 2018 7:47 pm

Stick to the r n s running plays and pass plays. Where’s the rb draw, rb trap, the shovel pass, handing the ball off to the slot. Wr screens rb screens. Ugh
RIP brahdda Vince. He would always come to my theatre and we would talk. He would always call me uncle even tho i was only a year older. Was a good guy.

  38. 808bowler November 17, 2018 7:48 pm

Stick to furuta blocking and holly to running. Holly hits the hole way faster.

  39. Honu888 November 17, 2018 7:55 pm

Even with the bye week the players still look tired. Fundamentals have not improved. Is it bad players? Bad coaching? Or both? I know the team is young but there still should be noticeable improvements throughout the year. Instead we are going backwards. I hate to be negative but looks like this season is over unless we have a huge second half.

  40. radio November 17, 2018 8:03 pm

Why is “OLD MCDONALD” still playing……..he could not do anything in the first half……….”passes thrown behind, passes over thrown, fumbles football,………….

  43. suckkabooya November 17, 2018 8:07 pm

Put in Furuta. Pass block. Take the 6 to 8 yard play. Take your time. We can win this.

  44. Inyoface November 17, 2018 8:10 pm

    Thank you savich

  72. Inyoface November 17, 2018 11:18 pm

Moussa should start next week, save Chevan for da bowl.

  73. Lopaka43 November 17, 2018 11:20 pm

I have been at Aloha Stadium for some amazing Hawaii wins, including two tremendously satisfying thumpings of BYU and one in which Air Force was driving for a sure victory inside the ten yard line and a Hawaii defender jumped into the backfield, grabbed the ball out of the Air Force runner’s hands, and ran the length of the field to score the winning touchdown.

However, for me, tonight’s fourth quarter roller coaster topped all of those as we went from the depths of futility to the amazing beauty of the run and shoot when it is all clicking.

Chevan Cordeiro brought back the magic that this season had at the beginning and awoke the beast that lives at Aloha Stadium and loves Hawaii Warrior defense. It was growling and snarling in that South end zone as we forced the four and out.

What a night, and what a turn around for our fortunes!! People will be talking about tonight’s victory for years as one of Hawaii’s best.

  74. oldtimer808 November 17, 2018 11:21 pm

Cordeiro should start in San Diego. His passes are accurate and catchable. If you watch how he moves the defensive backs with his head and eyes, you know he was taught well from Coach Passes at St Louis. His last touchdown pass to Ursua was right on the money and in stride.

  75. oldtimer808 November 17, 2018 11:25 pm

I agree stick to the run and shoot and forget about the RPO.

  76. Savich November 17, 2018 11:31 pm

I agree. Let Cordeiro start the San Diego State game.

Then Moussa. Third back up, McDonald. Next week’s lineup for quarterback.

  77. H-Man November 17, 2018 11:54 pm

Too bad for the fans that left early. Cordeiro put on a show that’s hard to beat. His first play goes for a 65-yd TD. Simply something that you cannot script. Unbelievable 3-TD performance in less than a quarter. Kudos to Jojo Ward for his TD catches. And much kudos to the defense that played great D in the 4th. No question, play Cordeiro against the Aztecs.

  78. ai-eee-soos November 18, 2018 12:54 am

    SAVE Chevan’s redshirt year.

We are bowl bound, and we are NOT in contention for

the West Div. title. Chevan can play in the Bowl and still RS.

    QB’s for SDSU:

Cole; Jeremy (he’s from that area); Kolney Cassell; Larry T.

  79. suckkabooya November 18, 2018 1:08 am

Open field tackling was very good tonight. LB’s seemed to be less “rigid” and more “downhill”, not on their heels as much. Even noticed some designed “run blitzes”. DB’s were pretty good on taking the proper angles (especially Hicks). Coverage was not too bad either despite lots of isolation. And lots of tackles by D-linemen. We do need to put more pressure on 3rd and long (7 yards or more) though. Much improved tonight.

  80. Lopaka43 November 18, 2018 1:18 am

Anybody know when Spectrum will rebroadcast the game?

  81. to good times November 18, 2018 3:54 am

Wow! Very similar story line with Chevan as with Tua at Alabama last year. Now, as Nick Saban said “whoever wins the locker room”….

  82. islandman November 18, 2018 4:57 am

Usually the replay is on at 6 am i think.
Then again later at i forgot, was it
    6 pm ?

  83. cappie the dog November 18, 2018 4:58 am

    18.

The part of Kamehameha Highway that traverses Aiea, Waimalu, and Pearl City needs repaving.

    56.

I don’t think you can redshirt if you play this late in the season. I guess that was Coach Rolovich’s original plan. I was wondering why Jeremy Moussa replaced Cordero as the back-up.

  84. Whats up November 18, 2018 5:19 am

Last night we witnessed something magical at Halawa and it was Chevan Corderio moxie. In the Wyoming game Chevan led the Offense on a game winning long ball to WR JoJo Ward for a come back win. And last night he did it again but this time he air assaulted UNLV with accurate passes to JoJo Ward, John Ursua and Cedric Byrd. We mostly acknowledge John Ursua and Cedric Byrd as the goto WR’s. But Jojo Ward reminded us why he is a member of the Hawaii “Big 3 of WRs”.

I mean the defense played inspired during the 4th quarter comeback, give Rojesterman Farris, Eugene Ford, Kalen Hicks, Ikem Okeke, Samiuela Akoteu Kendall Hune, Penei Pavihi, Solomon Mautautia, Blessman Ta’ala, Manu Hudson-Rasmussen just to name a few. 4th down run stops, not getting man handled on the line and the secondary not giving up big plays! The 4th quarter showed what this defense can do with an offense that is scoring touch downs at will. The special teams played huge in the 4th quarter comeback as well. The winning moxie and belief is contagious.

Where was this defense during Hawaii’s losing streak?

The bye-week helped, 11 straight games took a toll on the team.

McDonald has to increase his accuracy, Chevan and Moussa throw accurate passes that give the WR’s a chance to make a play for the ball. I think the other difference is since Chevan familiarity with the RnS and Moussa is a pro style QB they both can read and decipher faster than McDonald. I think teams have figured out Cole McDonald tendencies and this is adding to his struggles.

I say start McDonald for the first half of SDSU game and put in Moussa for the second half. Save Chevan Redshirt for possible playing time in the Hawaii Bowl. I think Moussa and Chevan are better suited for the RnS pass happy Offense and they both have what it takes to run the RPO as well. Of course, I wouldn’t mind seeing Moussa start the SDSU game so we can what this young Warrior can do for an entire game. Just like when Chevan played the entire Wyoming game.

It’s been a little while since we seen some “Halawa Magic” like we witnessed last night!

    Live Aloha/Play Warrior

    Go Warriors of Hawaii

  85. cappie the dog November 18, 2018 5:30 am

I am pretty confident that UNLV never put together two consecutive road conference wins.

Hawaii was supposed to win this game.

Ryan Meskell is the second or third best player on this team. He gave Hawaii a chance to get their act together in the second half. A football team is as good as their quarterback and place kicker.

Coach Rolovich finally remembered that his head coach benched him in the 2000 season opener against Portland State. (At least Florida Atlantic was a provisionary Division I-A school.) I remember there was a drunk guy screaming for Timmy Chang. There was another drunk guy screaming for Jeremy Moussa. The screamers are the ones who bet on Hawaii to win. On the call-in shows, when Hawaii loses, I can tell which disgruntled fans lost money. Either that or they don’t like Gary Dickman. I like Jeff Portnoy better because he knows better not to go on and on about Syracuse basketball.

Good job Mr. Rolo. You pulled the trigger and now you’re going to a bowl game in two out of your first three years, just like June Jones but with a sadder win-loss percentage.

Cordero, man, you bailed out your OC.

Season on the line and he calls two consecutive running plays for Fred Holly. I don’t like to disparage any student-athlete but he is not Diocemy St. Juste. The OC can make a player look bad.

Chevan Cordeiro, I believe in you. You’re going to lead Hawaii to its eight victory against the paper tiger that is San Diego State.

And a child shall lead them.

    Great night.

    Now, c’mon women’s basketball.

    Beat Seattle!

  86. cappie the dog November 18, 2018 5:32 am

    83.

You sound as happy as me.

  87. Boolakanaka November 18, 2018 5:46 am

As a clarity to the RS issue, and spoke to Wags himself, but the previous rule was any game pass the 4th game, the new rule, you can play in ANY four games. That said, I think, we play for the moment and not some opportunity in 2022. Anything can happen between now and then—the key thing is we have two guys that are proven at QB, one is one the rise, the other has top stats but is a tad in the decline. …who benefits, we do.

I say, CC has earned the right to get a full-time look next week, and if he struggles, Cole can come in….To that end, I would like to see packages, at least 5-7, that have them on the field at the same time, akin to the NO Saints, the fact that Cole is a legit runner and passer, we should have at least a couple combos testing the D….last night was pretty historic and I’ve been watching since Alex Kaloi.

  88. cappie the dog November 18, 2018 5:46 am

In fairness to Cole McDonald, I don’t think the back-ups would have changed the final outcomes against Utah State and Fresno State.

  89. azwarrior22 November 18, 2018 6:01 am

    EPIC win !

Let the QB controversy begin. Who’s Jalen Hurt? Just saying…

    Go Warriors !

  90. Maddog50 November 18, 2018 7:28 am

Something special happened last night. The Defense played like a Warrior defense should play for a little over a half. Something happened in the locker room at half that needs to happen more often and at the start of games-several defenders stood out but Pavihi seized the moment. All the offensive miracles aside, this team is still undermanned and outgunned at several spots, but this young roster made a quantum leap-need a solid recruiting class and for this team to build on last nights experience

  91. Ipu Man November 18, 2018 7:49 am

Betcha other teams gonna try to lure Hawaii’s
Chevan to transfer and play for them. Maybe
LSU? Central Florida even? Who else…

  92. Old School Dave November 18, 2018 7:52 am

Congrats to the team and coaches, who never gave up! Great win and comeback. CC gave the team a needed spark. Didn’t like the attitude of the UNLV players with all of their unsportsmanlike penalties.

SDSU is a winnable game. GO WARRIORS!

When plays work – the coach is a genius. When they don’t, it’s fire the coach and hire (fill-in the blank).

  93. Savich November 18, 2018 8:08 am

As of now it will be Fresno State vs. Utah State vying for MWC title.

If we were in the BCS, Fresno State or Utah State should have been top 25. Instead they got Boise State. RPI,? I’ll stick with the BCS, rather than the RPI. That way Hawaii at possibly 8-5 has a stronger record.

  94. Old School Dave November 18, 2018 8:15 am

CommonUH. Stop dilly dallying and extend Rolo’s contract, along with a raise for his assistants! Opposing schools will use this against UH in recruiting, if they haven’t already. The poachers are also hard at work trying to lure UH players away, no doubt (I smell Beaver).

  95. NorthShoreFan November 18, 2018 8:20 am

Fairy tale stats….4/5, 3 tds, 21 pts. and a win. I’d like to say Coach Rolo has a QB issue but…like a relief pitcher, you don’t sit a starting pitcher and insert a relief pitcher at this point.
That being said, Coach Rolo got a interesting week ahead of him.
I think Chevan can get into one more game and not affect his redshirt status.
Cole hasn’t been the same since his return from injury. Sat out Wyoming game for…???
Anyhoo, heal up and get on it for SDS.

Old School Dave…roger that…need some stability for recruiting our future Warriors.

  97. Boolakanaka November 18, 2018 8:52 am

Old School Dave…you are right on that one! As previously mentioned, both the AD and behind the scene folks at the legislative need to make a unilateral move in the vincinty of about 350k. 150-175 of that would be a raise to Rolo-tethered to a multi-year deal. Then open the remaining portion, for 3-4 primary assistant raises—those yearly raises would range from 25 to 50k.

As a point of context, the HC of UNLV, has a current deal just north of 600k annually. Do the deal immediately after the regular season, and you will ultimately save money and solidly the program for the intermediate future.

  98. azwarrior22 November 18, 2018 9:20 am

    Here’s my 2 cents…

Play the best man…Cole was the best man for the first half of the season but now he’s not getting it done since the injury. Winning breeds winning. Winning brings the fans. Winning will help with recruiting. Yesterday’s come from behind win was huge !! Let’s build on this momentum and go with the hot hand that will give us the best chance to win.

The whispers will keep getting louder and Rolo will have a tough decision to make.

    Go Warriors !!

  99. Mytake November 18, 2018 9:31 am

Let the mainland boys play in Cali in front of friends and family. Let the local boy play in the Hawaii Bowl in front of friends and family. The season has for all purposes ended. It will probably put more people in the stands for the Hawaii Bowl. It’s a win win decision.

  100. Inyoface November 18, 2018 9:52 am

Chevan needs to play in the bowl, he cannot play at San Diego. Moussa should get the start so we have 3 qbs with starts going into next season.

  101. anywaaaays!! November 18, 2018 10:17 am

Cole Mcdonald hasn’t been very much on the decline since the san jose state game. He’s making bad reads, he’s underthrowing receivers and has major accuracy issues right now. The offense has been stagnant since San Jose State during the losing skid.

When chevan took the reins of the offense, his throws had zip to them. He threw the ball with confidence, accuracy, and velocity, and made decisive decisions that energized the entire team and the crowd.

Start the person most likely to get a win (chevan cordeiro) for the rest of the season and then open up the qb competition during the offseason. His redshirt year no longer matters. Like boola says, you play to win the game now, not some hypothetical situation in 2022

  102. Willie November 18, 2018 10:24 am

Got home last night & my voice was kinda hoarse, only kinda cuz only yelled in the 4th qtr. Absolutely magical, awesome performance of epic proportions! Chevan!!! On top of this, chicken skin seeing all those “65” jerseys. That was for you “Vince”!

Just watched the replay, seeing it again with replay it just reinforces what our whole section was saying: “how come it took SO LONG for Rolo to make the change”? McDonald was awful missing throws all night. He was under 50%, minimal passing yards, 2 picks and no TDs. Guess we might hear tonight on his show?

Props to the D for stepping up in the 2nd half. Batoon made the adjustments!

  103. Rodney November 18, 2018 10:58 am

Maybe Qb Cole should get with Qb coach at
    Saint Louis for some coaching.
Can’t figure why his play is on a downward
slide. Is it recievers reading coverage incorrectly
    or not running routes cleanly.
Is it play calling? Trust in the R n S coach!!
    Any way happy for team!!!!!
    Happy for coach Batoon!!!!

  104. islandman November 18, 2018 11:00 am

    102. Cole made the 24 yd pass to Byrd in the 3rd quarter to the UNLV3 that set up his 3 yd TD run. Part of a 9 play 55 yd drive.

  105. burro sabio November 18, 2018 11:05 am

Maybe we should get rid of the entire coaching staff. There are plenty of people who post on this blog who think that they are smarter than Rolo.

  106. clyde November 18, 2018 11:20 am

    My two cents ….
If he hasn’t already done so, Rolo should talk to Chevan and the Cordeiro family about his options going forward. If Rolo feels Chevan gives the team the best chance to win now and the family is in onboard, then start him at SDSU. Who starts at QB in the Hawaii Bowl is a decision that can wait.
No coach worth his salt would not the play his best against SDSU. A Hawaii win at SDSU would be impactful (and rare), and clinch a third-place finish in the MW West and the fifth best record in the entire MW. Otherwise, what kind of message would you be sending the team if you use the SDSU game as an audition for others?
So, unless the Cordeiro family wants to preserve Chevan’s redshirt, start him because the future is now, not four years down the road. Totally agree with Boolakanaka.

  107. downtownie November 18, 2018 11:29 am

LOL, people was 100% behind McDonald….until things unraveled. Now they are on the Chevan Coredeiro train. After he has one bad game the same people here will say, “See, bad coaching decision, should have stayed with McDonald.” Then when they both falter, “See, stupid coaches, should have put in Moussa.” LOL! Fair weather fans, we all are…

  108. Rodney November 18, 2018 11:35 am

    Happy holidays Team!!

  109. downtownie November 18, 2018 11:38 am

Chevan sure looked comfortable in that more traditional run and shoot offense in the 4th quarter. Abandon the RPO? To me the bubble screen, shovel pass, and counter play or inside handoff were as effective forms of play action as the new fangled RPO plays. We had james Fenderson, Mike Bass, Mike Brewster, Nate ilaoa, Regan Mauia, Kealoha Pilares, Alex Green, Joey Iosefa. The single running back or rotating of two or three backs was very effective. The power back, the speed back, the cut-back runner. We had them all, and each could catch a shovel pass, block, motion out to the slot.

  110. suckkabooya November 18, 2018 11:45 am

Despite Sanitoa recording only one tackle last night his play was very impressive and encouraging. As the “Mike” he diagnosed plays quickly, attacked the running lane stuffing the blockers so others could make the play, and flowed fluidly not only “downhill” on runs but on his dropback in coverage as well. Very “fluid”.

Pavihi was used to his strengths last night. He had a similar game against Rice but was asked to “read and react” more (usually as a “Mike LB) as the season progressed. This is how he needs to be used every game (as the “free” attacker) Attacking first and then reacting. He was awesome. Makes the D-line more effective when a LB can disrupt.

The 43 yard run by Thomas happened when the defense was in a “read and react” scheme. Mautautia was the “Will”. He read an outside fake (weak side). The rest of the second level followed the misdirection (strong side). Left a big opening for TD. The less “read and react” the better I think. More gap attacks if can. I did see a weird D-line “stunt” where the two DE’s crossed end to end. Got a lot better during bye week. I’m expecting “big” things from this defense (and staff) next season. Much better last night. Keep the momentum flowing. I really appreciate the effort by everyone involved. Awesome.

  111. Rodney November 18, 2018 11:47 am

We had under previous HC (Chow) we had big olinemen and very good runbacks and lots of
TEs … not good for Rolos Offense.
Now we have Rolos recruits for his offense
and we are playing better.. except for the 5 games… It’s puzzling..why?
I love Rolo? His staff gotta get better!!!
    Happy for team though!!!!
    Hawaii 24 SDST 21
    Let’s go Bows!!

  112. Another loss November 18, 2018 11:51 am

I heard on the talk show with Gary Dickman after the game someone suggested after the win that maybe it’s time for Rolo should go. This person pointed out all the things that went wrong in the game and the coaching.

I was hoping Hawaii would have run the table and have a 1 loss season. That didn’t happen. Instead Hawaii loss 4 in a row. Last night’s win was great. In 3 seasons, Rolo will have taken this team to 2 bowl games. With the previous coach, the season was over by midseason.

For people saying Rolo should go, be careful. He might just leave one day and then Hawaii ends up with another coach that brings in a pro set offense where you run to set up the pass philosophy. And then, Hawaii will become regulars at the bottom of the MWC west. All we would here after each game is … another loss.

Last night was a win for Hawaii. Enjoy it because it didn’t it didn’t happen that often with the previous coaching staff. Two bowl games in three seasons. I’ll take it.

  113. suckkabooya November 18, 2018 12:06 pm

    !09 downtownie

!00% agree. Designed run plays so the line can plan on run blocking, especially if get only 3 man front with four in the box. Pass should set up the run. Which can then set up the pass. Break one tackle then 8 to 12 yard gain. Would make things easier for O-line I think.

  114. Rodney November 18, 2018 12:12 pm

    109… Good points!!
When you think about RPO it’s similar to
    play action..Stick with the Shoot!!!
Trust in the Run n shoot!!!!!!

    109…. don’t forget Lakalaka!!!

  116. Inyoface November 18, 2018 12:31 pm

Wonder if Rolo will play Chevan in the next two games and burn his redshirt.

  117. Buffoman November 18, 2018 12:50 pm

UH has yet to beat a fbs team with a winning record. So maybe they’ve beaten the team’s they were supposed to beat. The defense needs to start better if they want to be in a better position to beat such teams. We are simply giving up too many yards. The UNLV rb had over a hundred yards before the half. Better teams, that have beaten us keep gouging us. The defense play in the fourth quarter particularly against the run was much better. If the team can play like that from the first quarter until the end, we could find success in our last game. Would be great to end the season beating a fbs team with a winning record.

  118. suckkabooya November 18, 2018 12:52 pm

If McDonald can gain 5 to 10 pounds (just so he can get more physical to finish off runs) he can be a weapon of which we have not had since Ivin Jasper.

He could be the RPO QB with Corderio and Moussa bringing a more traditional RnS (no RPO for them) causing opposing coaches to have to game plan specifically for RPO. Might make it harder to prepare for going forward.

He can be the “Wildcat” QB on some series. Extra lineman, one “H”, one receiving TE and two wideouts Designed counters, power sweeps, draws, roll out R/PO (isolating SS) and straight dropback with max protect. Hard to prepare for too.

But his main role would be as a “big target” slot or a “fluidly mobile” H back. Rangy receiver able to be targeted easily with good “catch radius”. Probably would be isolated against SS or coverage LB so he could beat any of them deep as well.

I hope this can happen. Might take some time but the Prodigies are ready sooner than expected. Cole’s skillset is unique (I think he could play any skill position, defensive secondary, punt returner and even “bandit”) and may be so hard to prepare for going forward. I cant wait to see what develops. Everybody will benefit from this. So good.

  119. Whats up November 18, 2018 12:53 pm

Every game is important to the team and fans, but Hawaii has secured the Hawaii Bowl invite already. So playing Chevan in the SDSU game in California in a game that doesn’t have a much meaning as the huge win last night, just doesn’t make since. Save Chevan valuable redshirt and play him at home in the Hawaii Bowl in front of his family and give him the chance to play in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 (If he doesn’t leave for the NFL draft in 2022). Chevan has caught-up to McDonald by proving that he is a game changer/playmaker both with his arm and feet.

McDonald has taken a beating this season and the Army game showed that if you drop 8 in coverage that is his Kryptonite. Last night was no exception with 2ints, 0 passing TD’s and the O-line was giving Cole plenty of time to read, throw or run. He hasn’t progressed and some of that is lacking passing accuracy that is required in the RnS.

I don’t think we as fans are overreacting but if the defense drops 8 in coverage and gives Chevan the same amount of time to read, throw and run. He has the accuracy and moxie to move the chains or better.

I still want to see what Moussa has to bring the table? Thats why I say start Moussa for the SDSU and give him some badly needed live game reps.

McDonald, Moussa and Chevan are the future of Hawaii Football at QB. And we are lucky to have all 3 of them. But it would be unwise to burn Chevan and Moussa Redshirt at this point of the season.

    Hawaii Bowl bound, baby!!!

    Go Warriors of Hawaii

Keith Kirkwood plays for the Saints, crazy!

  121. cappie the dog November 18, 2018 2:04 pm

I never gave up on Dru Brown.

I felt that Cole McDonald deserved the chance to play out of his extended funk; he accomplished so much in the first half of the season. I just wished, like last night, that the head coach would have had the presence of mind to make a quarterback change. Leaving a struggling McDonald out there, only exacerbated his, whatever the problem is. Mechanics? Lack of confidence? Nagging injury?

  124. Willie November 18, 2018 2:18 pm

#104, it wasn’t Cole’s night. 14/30 for 176 yards, 2 picks & no TDs. Take away the 24 yarder and he was 13/29 for 152 yards. He overthrew receivers all 3 quarters & misread routes. So #104, if he stayed in all game would the outcome have been happy? Good enough performance for a D1 qb? Watch the replay, tape doesn’t lie!
