Tavai will not play in today’s opener

FORT COLLINS >> Middle linebacker Jahlani Tavai will not play in today’s game because of what is termed a violation of team rules, school officials confirmed today.

Tavai practiced with the scout team this week. He traveled with the team to Colorado, and was in full uniform during pre-game warmups.

* * * * *

The 2018 season opens with today’s game between Hawaii and host Colorado State. That means there will be answers to these questions:

> Will the run-and-shoot offense be effective?

> Will the defense be as improved as everyone claims?

> Do the Warriors have a reliable kicking game this year?

> Will penalties be a factor?

Meanwhile, because the mercury might reach the 90s, this is a good sign:

Beer, beer … makes you wanna cheer …

Did we mention it’s a nationally televised game?

The CSU AD gave us a tour of Canvas Stadium. It was really impressive. But we don’t want to make anyone envious, so I’ll just show one of the activities in the players’ lounge:

Cornhole!

Even the golf carts know it’s game day:

Good morning Tsaikos. We dodged a bullet with Lane. Now let’s hope McDonald can throw some bullets to our receivers and slots and get this run-and-shoot hybrid going. Let’s hope the D is inspired to Just Do It. NO EXCUSES!!! LIVE ALOHA…PLAY WARRIOR!!! DO IT FOR HAWAII!!!

  10. Whats up August 25, 2018 10:45 am

Keeping my expectations tempered, I think this year is an overhaul and rebuilding year due to so many inexperienced young players with new coaches. With teams not having video with the new Hawaii offense, defense and new players. That means this years team has a chance to steal a few games until the Wyoming game, then the schedule gets tougher and teams will have some video on the coaching and player tendencies.

While CSU is relatively inexperienced, they have home field and overall better recruiting, I don’t see Hawaii stealing this game.

  11. clyde August 25, 2018 10:48 am

Anyone watching Little League? Think I saw June Jones sitting with the Honolulu team.

  12. H-Man August 25, 2018 10:49 am

    Those were good questions.

  13. islandman August 25, 2018 11:21 am

    11. You were right. June said he’s good friends with Jace Souza’s father. Does anyone know the father’s name ?

  14. wafan August 25, 2018 11:38 am

Honolulu LL going to the championship game!

That’s one of two for the day. Come on ‘Bows, you can do it!!!

Honolulu moved into the championship game of the Little League World Series today with a dramatic 3-0 win over Peachtree Little League from Georgia.

The local kids will face South Korea tomorrow for the world title in South Williamsport, Pa.

The Hawaii team won the United States championship today thanks to pitcher Aukai Kea’s dominant performance. He struck out 15 and didn’t allow a runner past first base. He and Georgia pitcher Connor Riggs-Soper were locked in a pitcher’s duel before the local kids broke through for one run in the fourth on a two-out single by pinch hitter John De la Cruz that plated Hunter Nishina.

Hawaii added two more runs in the sixth on a triple by Bruce Boucher that scored Sean Yamaguchi, who was issued an intentional pass with two outs. Boucher scored the third run on a single by Jace Souza.

Hawaii will face South Korea, which beat Japan 2-1 in an equally close game, at 9 a.m. Hawaii time.

UH 31 CSU 14 Straight up!

  27. Manoa Mist August 25, 2018 12:36 pm

This should be an interesting game. I’m not expecting much. New QB, new RB, best player is coming off an ACL, untested O and D-lines, Linebackers good, best safety gone, new offensive system. Unless the new guys are good even though inexperienced, we in deep kim chee. Go Bows!

  28. Petey808 August 25, 2018 12:37 pm

What happened to Ursua? I heard he tweaked his ankle during warm ups. Gametime decision.

  29. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2018 12:37 pm

Pomai was a good man with good intentions.
He also was part of the group that really supported UH softball (and terrorized administrators who weren’t equally supportive).
    Rest in peace, my friend.

  30. Petey808 August 25, 2018 12:40 pm

Actually Hammy still bothering him. Still game time decision.

  31. Petey808 August 25, 2018 12:40 pm

    ST Jahlani Tavai out?

  32. islandman August 25, 2018 12:41 pm

Ursua had a hamstring injury and Tavai won’t be playing in this game due to the incident awhile ago (from another forum).

  33. clyde August 25, 2018 12:44 pm

With Tavai out, LB depth already depleted (Pritchard, where are you?), and 4-2-5 base defense … expect to see a steady diet of Izzy.

  34. Hilo-Warrior August 25, 2018 12:48 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos,

RIP Pomai and prayers of comfort for the family.

Great job the the Little League team for getting the win today. We are cheering our Warriors here in San Antonio and hoping for our Hawaii teams to go 2-0 today.

Hopefully Ursua is able to play tonight in a limited role. We’re going to need him.

And do we know if Jahlani will be suspended longer than one game?

    Go Warriors!!!
    Beat those Rams!!!

  35. tommui August 25, 2018 12:53 pm

They are moving the ball well.

  40. Losthawaiian August 25, 2018 1:50 pm

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this. I watched highlights of a Alabama high school game last night here in Florida. Tua’s Little brother, Taulia threw for 385 yds and 4 TD’s with No interceptions in less then 3 qtr’s In their season opening game. They won 38-7.

  41. Whats up August 25, 2018 1:50 pm

McDonald looks good so far, like the 4th down aggressive play by Rolo. Starting to get RnS flash backs with June Jones go for it on 4th down. Let’s see how the defense plays.

  42. 3-Prong August 25, 2018 1:55 pm

    Aloha Pomai🤙🏼

  43. Tempmanoa August 25, 2018 2:00 pm

Gotta get way more pressure on the QB.

  44. Buffoman August 25, 2018 2:04 pm

Defense looks like it did last year. Needs to be better.

  45. seewhy August 25, 2018 2:07 pm

Seeing that hybrid Run N shoot/RPO in action. Good run by McDonald.

  54. wafan August 25, 2018 2:43 pm

Nice to see a ‘Bow offense move the ball and score.

  55. Moocher August 25, 2018 2:46 pm

ram band channel streaming? can you post the link?

  56. cappie the dog August 25, 2018 2:51 pm

Craig Thompson said, “No face mask.”

  57. Buffoman August 25, 2018 2:52 pm

The offense looks good with Cole. He looks comfortable. Defense seems a bit slow to the up tempo of Colorado State.

  58. Buffoman August 25, 2018 3:06 pm

Wow, McDonald looks like he was born into this. Maybe Dru could have been as good, but he’s not here. Defense needs to improve.

  59. Akamai Okole August 25, 2018 3:08 pm

    Uh-oh, Bobo

  60. seewhy August 25, 2018 3:10 pm

  64. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2018 3:36 pm

So, there used to be a QB controversy?

  65. slenzi August 25, 2018 3:42 pm

    Great opening D.

  66. clyde August 25, 2018 3:47 pm

In baseball parlance, this is like watching a perfect game.🤙

  67. Scott August 25, 2018 3:49 pm

Wow! Something that hasn’t happened in a while… Defense gets a stop after the 2nd half opening kickoff, then the offense scores after the stop. Trust the process!!!

  68. OC Warrior August 25, 2018 3:51 pm

Much improved in all 3 phases. Still got work to do but at least they look competent and confident. Offense moving and scoring. Defense not giving up huge chunk plays, and special teams solid.

  69. Ferd Burford August 25, 2018 3:53 pm

Great job so far. QB looks solid and, for once, we have a big O-line that can push people around.

    Go Warriors!

  70. wafan August 25, 2018 3:54 pm

Moocher . . . referring to the CBS Sports channel. They must have a mic right in front of the band. When they play anything it drowns out the sportscasters.

  71. Ipu Man August 25, 2018 3:56 pm

Thanks Pomai for your extra tickets so my late sick friend could
experience American football for the first time in his short life.
Hope you see each other in Heaven…

  72. Boolakanaka August 25, 2018 4:09 pm

Ursua and Jojo are a formidable duo….

  73. Buffoman August 25, 2018 4:12 pm

That CSU I touchdown was too easy. Defense needs work. Lots of time left. Need to remain focused.

  74. OC Warrior August 25, 2018 4:16 pm

    Crap, I jinxed them.

  75. Buffoman August 25, 2018 4:18 pm

Well that was bad. Looks like the defense went home thinking win. Two plays and a touchdown.

  76. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2018 4:23 pm

Buckle up, here’s the final quarter

  77. Tempmanoa August 25, 2018 4:28 pm

    Ouch. Turnover

  78. Buffoman August 25, 2018 4:29 pm

Wow, a momentum shift. We are starting to look like our past. Need to get that momentum back. Can not play not to lose.

  79. Ferd Burford August 25, 2018 4:32 pm

A timely stop. Now let’s keep the offense moving.

  80. Kimo 67 August 25, 2018 4:41 pm

    What a punt!

  81. wafan August 25, 2018 4:47 pm

    Uh-oh . . .

  82. clyde August 25, 2018 4:47 pm

Hope the (mis)use of the last TO and the questionable two-point try don’t come back to haunt. Think the offense is gonna have to win it.

  83. Whats up August 25, 2018 4:47 pm

Hawaii needs to drive the ball and score a Touchdown, the defense secondary is getting exposed again, just like last season.

  84. Buffoman August 25, 2018 4:50 pm

Where did the defense go? Unbelievable. Play calling on offense need to go back to what we did in the first half.

  85. Tempmanoa August 25, 2018 4:58 pm

Need to force a turnover on CSU.

  86. Inyoface August 25, 2018 4:59 pm

Got to put in the package where Kaiwi Chung is the fullback within the 10 yard line. Keep your foot on the gas Hawaii!

  87. Unfan09 August 25, 2018 5:07 pm

    Still rolo can’t voach

  88. wafan August 25, 2018 5:14 pm

    Huzzah!

  89. cappie the dog August 25, 2018 5:16 pm

Meskell, you just bailed your team out.

    Way to go.

  90. Scott August 25, 2018 5:18 pm

Leave the islands on the helmet!

  91. Whitey August 25, 2018 5:19 pm

Congratulations to the Rainbows. Col I hope you took the points.

  92. boolakanaka August 25, 2018 5:20 pm

A win is a win, especially on the road and featured as the nationally televised game! That said, we gotta tighten up on the D side, especially the d backfield.

  93. Willie August 25, 2018 5:20 pm

Don’t know what he did, but isn’t Tavai one of the captains this season?

Don’t get it as to what he was thinking???

  94. Why Guy August 25, 2018 5:21 pm

#86, Agree!!! Leave the islands on the helmet!

  95. Whats up August 25, 2018 5:22 pm

Defense needs to practice tackling, the secondary has got to play better this season. Great win by the Hawaii Warriors. Wow! Surprised me, this team played with grit today. Go Warriors!

  96. wafan August 25, 2018 5:23 pm

2 for 2 today. Even as we lost one special person.

  97. oneseason August 25, 2018 5:24 pm

A win … at altitude. And lots of learning opportunities. While having to play the full 60 minutes after being up 37 – 7 resulted in a nail biter, it will definitely make it easy for players and coaches to remember that it ain’t over til its over.

  98. Old School Dave August 25, 2018 5:24 pm

Sweet victory for the team. Congrats! Especially special for Coach Logo who formally coach at CSU. Stadium looked pretty empty at the end of the game. Lots of work to do and improve upon (it got interesting at the end), but a win is a win. Shades of 1992!!

  99. Buffoman August 25, 2018 5:25 pm

No QB question mark. Defense was just not good. Defense backs were getting worked. O-line was good despite their youth. Special team kicking was a nice improvement. Win was great. Nice start to the season. McDonald is terrific.

  100. Hilo-Warrior August 25, 2018 5:29 pm

Great first half. Rough second half.

Player of the game to me is Meskel. He sealed the game going 3/3 on fg’s.

Cole played an incredible game. I like his ability to mix it or if needed.

Defense needs work. But I wonder how much of it was the defense being winded when CSU went uptempo.

A win is a win. We are 1-0.

    Go Warriors!!!

  101. Inyoface August 25, 2018 5:29 pm

    Hawaii all day! All day!

  102. Tempmanoa August 25, 2018 5:31 pm

All on our offens with a few defensive plays including an INT. Get Tavai back and that should help.

  103. clyde August 25, 2018 5:32 pm

Thought a couple defensive calls that brought up the safeties left the corners vulnerable 1-on-1, but flip the script and give props to CSU, considering two starting receivers were 6-4 and 6-6.
McDonald could not have played better, and the offense is dynamic once again.
Navy will present a whole different challenge, but hey who’d have thunk UH would start 1-0.

  104. Anthony Pennings August 25, 2018 5:35 pm

WOW・two wins。very exciting. great performances. Moral of the game: don’t fumble.

  105. Haleakala August 25, 2018 5:37 pm

Great win! Underdogs on the road. Offense was outstading!
The great thing is it exposed our deficiencies so that we know what needs to be worked on, and UH still won! Can’t ask for better than that.

  106. wafan August 25, 2018 5:42 pm

    100

  107. cappie the dog August 25, 2018 5:55 pm

    I had the sound off.

This is what I have been doing since the Norm Chow era whenever Hawaii is on national television.

I put on CDs to help minimize the inevitable disappointment.

Today, I played Ultravox’s self-titled album, Ha! Ha! Ha!, and Systems of Romance; The Velvet Underground and Nico, and White Light, White Heat.

At the end of the game, Colorado State had no time outs, right?

Couldn’t Hawaii just have run out the clock without even attempting a field goal?

  108. Palolo2_LA August 25, 2018 6:02 pm

Super shout out to the fans who believe da Warrior’s “get chance”. If the O stays hot, look for all the bandwagon fans to come cherring back. Are D has vast areas to improve, but I think if Tavai played he would have made a diff bc he’s a vocal leader. Surprised that we didn’t see much tampa 2 coverage by the DBs. 1 on 1 looked bad for our DBs, so figured they’d go to a cover two or three.

Plus, I’m dumbfounded that ESPN picked up a D1AA instead of the Warrior’s. Also, where’s the marketing about being the first game (for D1) of the year. That’s 2 fails, but the wins makes up for ^^^.

  109. Haoa August 25, 2018 6:35 pm

To get more people out to the Navy game, UH should organize a tribute to the LL World Series team. Put them and their family members in a section. Honor them at half time or before the game. Success breeds success.

  110. winning August 25, 2018 6:35 pm

Like I said 2 months ago, ‘they betta score 40+ pts or down goes the season’. they had a few conservative red zone calls but overall not too bad. And what the heck was that prevent D all about? the only thing that it prevents is winning to quote a wise old guy. Def= C- Off- B+

  111. Tom-warriornation August 25, 2018 6:38 pm

CSU’s QB was a former 4 star recruit who transferred from UW, and his receivers were all 3 star recruits but it looks like Cole and our receivers had better games than them! I just love our new offense, including our RB’s and shovel play! we need to step on the gas for every game and keep scoring TD’s to out score our opponents! Let’s average 50 points per game please!

  112. Tofuzuke August 25, 2018 6:44 pm

Congrats, great win! I liked the 2 rugby players in the punt situations. So many options to defend from pitches to crosses. Eh, must have some Poly rugby players to add more punt options. try to defend that!

  113. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2018 6:51 pm

Well, I think we got the answers to ST’s questions:

    Yes
    No
    Yes
Yes, but fortunately it was the other guys who had more

  114. NorthShoreFan August 25, 2018 7:11 pm

Not sure what the stats will show but…sacks?, hurries, tfl? Rams attacked db’s a little late, imho. had they done so earlier, might be looking a close game with different results. win is a win and I’ll take it anytime. now need to go take a sedative…LOL!…IMUA!

  115. JesseJames August 25, 2018 7:14 pm

Good win. Got some work to do but I liked what I saw, especially in the first half.

Damn Pomai…I bet you were cracking up in Heaven….and having a good time saying Fire Chow….🤣🤣🤣

  116. JesseJames August 25, 2018 7:16 pm

Captain Ron #6. Next time I’ll post here about watching the game. Sorry, was busy this week dealing with the hurricane stuff…also, you should try coming to Tsaiko Tgates this year…. 🙂🤙

  117. SteveM August 25, 2018 7:27 pm

We are often told that the biggest improvement in a team is between the first and second game of the season. Should I have huge expectations next week? Will see at Aloha Stadium!

  118. iGrokSpock August 25, 2018 7:58 pm

#111 – WR Williams was a 5 star recruit who initially went to Tennessee.

  119. A-House August 25, 2018 8:08 pm

wonder why UH “D” suddenly went AWOL from late in the 3rd qtr and well into the 4th?

    change of strategy? formations? personnel?

very surprised how well the O-Line did — that was my biggest concern.

then, the “D” — did not know what to expect with so many ‘ new ‘ coaches and how well players would adjust — for nearly 3/4s they looked great, then ??????????

it will be a pleasant ride home with the “W ” !!!

    welcome, Navy!!

  120. Savich August 25, 2018 8:48 pm

Jalani Tavai is 24 years old. Is this a day job? Remember Norm Chow? Team rules. Or does he have an arrest warrant on him.

Secondary defense? Does Manu-hudson Rassmussen thought he had better abs than John Ursula? Ursua took the looks. They need better pass rush. Anyone to go in.

Freddy Holly is the starter. He can plow the field. He looks good.

    Great game!!! My comments …

So if Cordeiro was listed as co-#1, does that mean he is that good? Or did Cole Mac play better than he has looked in practices? He looks like a true dual threat.

Wow Cedric Byrd!!! This Ursua/Byrd duo could be better than Bess/Grice-Mullins.

Defense was solid early. I think the comeback was partially due to altitude.

PLEASE OH PLEASE let the helmets with the Islands be permanent!!! ST, pass it on.

Congrats to Coach Rolo and the warriors for a hard fought road win. The O line played well all game and gave Cole the time to find the open receivers including the deep routes. The shovel pass plays looked almost as good as Colt and Nate’s connection back in 2006, and Ursua and Byrd know how to find the seams like Davone and RGM. Welcome back RnS!

    6. Ron. If you have Spectrum, you can order the Sports Pass which includes CBSSN for about $13 or the Digital Variety Pak which has CBSSN, ESPNU and other channels for $18.

I know this was just the first game but It was great to see Hawaii having WR’s that were not afraid to catch the ball in traffic and can juke/shake/dance for YAC. I got to give it to the WR’s JoJo Ward, Cedric Bryd, John Ursua and Marcus Armstrong-Brown. Our kickers are outstanding!!! Clutch FG and Punting! The shovel pass is back! McDonald was money, a true dual threat Colin Kapernick-like QB! Oline and RB’s did great.

It was amusing to watch CSU LB in coverage against speedy WR’s JoJo Ward, Cedric Bryd, John Ursua then get ankle breaking juked.

The Hawaii team needs to clean up the penalties, false starts/delay of game/offsides. Defense- the secondary needs help from the D-line. The D-line didn’t get much pressure on the CSU QB Carta-Samuels. The Hawaii LB’s and DB’s can only cover those WR’s for so long. To be fair the CSU WR’s did push off a lot against the Hawaii DB’s to get separation. And it did look like the secondary got gassed by the end of the 3rd quarter, from the lack of a pass rush by the D-line.

The Vader Black Helmets with the Island sticker on one side and H logo on the opposite side is a keeper. Those black helmets will look even better with the black jerseys and black pants. Nothing against the green uni’s but the black just looks menacing and has swag.
