California prep lineman commits to Warriors

Baraka Beckett, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound lineman from Palisades (Calif.) High tweeted that he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. He confirmed the commitment in phone call with the Warrior Beat this morning.

Beckett is eligible to sign a letter of intent on Dec. 20, the first day of the NCAA’s new three-day, early-signing period.

Beckett amassed 84 tackles in nine games at Windward High in Los Angeles in 2016. He transferred to Palisades in January.

He also is capable of playing on the offensive line.

We still have a chance to be top of west division Saturday is must win or season is a bust.
And next year we play the west teams on the road so it our best chance at getting to the top this year is Saturday.

If we lose we have to wait 2 yrs till we get chance to compete for west divison again

liked what I saw on the video of Baraka — strong, OL or DL, quick feet, long arms.

    hope he signs on 12/20/17.

he and other commits signing on 12/20/17 makes for a good X-mas present for UH!!!

With Cornell and Columbia on his list of offers I checked and he scored a 1160 on his SAT.l

We need to win more games to get more recruits.

Mahalo for becoming a Warrior, Mr. Beckett! Can’t wait to see you on the field!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  12. boolakanaka October 25, 2017 10:04 am

Hmmmn, those scores are pretty low for Columbia and Cornell, by way of specific example, the bottom accepted 25% was still in the high 1300s, with the average being about 1460-1470. That said, sounds like a very solid find and recruit.

  13. turfwar October 25, 2017 10:05 am

I scored 1160 too. But that’s cause I took it twice.

  14. 808warriorfan October 25, 2017 10:11 am

I still remember taking my own SAT way way back in the day. The test was held at kalaepohaku, and I remember having downed more than a few green bottles with some of the boys from Halawa the night before. Anywho, I got into the test just a minute or two late (had to catch The Bus and transfer from Ala Moana to kalaepohaku), and so, I remember I sat down next to this really cute private school girl already involved with taking the test. Bruddha neva have pencil, so I gave her my smoothest, “psssssssst, psssssst, sita you get pencil I can borrow or wat??”

Ohh, you should have seen the stink look private school girl gave me……..I think I scored in da single digits–wink.

    Lowest in the MWC.

Hard to have a Filet Mignon program when you pay your coaches Ground Beef contracts.

  29. A-House October 25, 2017 1:50 pm

pay — what he does with the $400,008 matters.

sure could live a nice life making $400,008 annual salary — if my annual was $50,000 and living comfortably, he is making 8xs more than me!!!

on the other hand, a football coach knows the amount of time dedicated to his team leaves much less time for his family than it would be for me.

  30. H-Man October 25, 2017 1:55 pm

Great recruiting news. Baraka Beckett makes the 2nd DT commit for 2018; Tristan Nichols of Arizona Western is the other. Plus, I really like Saint Louis commit QB Chevan Cordeiro. Watched him play against Punahou. He has good vision; makes good decisions; great arm.

  31. NotNasti October 25, 2017 2:12 pm

Showed up for a law school final exam and realized I had not brought any writing implement (Pen). Looked around, person next to me had four pens lined up (neatly facing the same direction) in front of his test question and composition book. I asked him if I could borrow a pen, to which he replied, “No.” So I said, “What you going do with four pens?” He said, “I might need them.” I told him, in my nicest voice , “You F___ka, gimme one pen, if you use all three, I will give you back your pen.” I got the pen, finished the exam, and gave him back his pen.

One more local boy starting at QB …

Pearl City’s Taamu to Lead Ole Miss at Quarterback
    Posted: Oct 25, 2017 2:46 PM HST
    By Brandi Higa

It was announced on Sunday that Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament, a knee injury that will require surgery.

Jordan Ta’amu will be asked to step into Patterson’s shoes. The Pearl City alum was 7-of-11 for 78 yards in Saturday’s loss to LSU. Taamu transferred to Ole Miss from New Mexico Military Institute this season.

“That’s one of his strengths — he can really run,” he said. “He’s a very, very good athlete.” said Rebels Head Coach Matt Luke about Taamu.

When asked about Patterson’s injury and the way his opportunity has come up, Taamu responded, “I was devastated. I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody. He talked to me and told me I have to be ready and all that, so right now, I’m confident. I believe that I can take this role and be the starting quarterback. I have to do what he did: carry the team. My social media has been blowing up, but I just have to stay humble, just continue to do my thing and go out there and prove to everybody that I can run this offense.”

Taamu and the Rebels will take on an equally battered Arkansas team this weekend.

The film critic at the late “Honolulu Weekly” was a co-writer for the documentary film “Baraka”. It played at the 1992 Venice Film Festival. This film critic also taught English at Leeward Community College. “Baraka” is listed in the third volume of “Roger Ebert’s Great Movies”. He was also a ghostwriter for the Joe Moore epic “Moonglow”. He would tell me that the late Milo O’Shea would call him and beg, ” ___, ___, you have to get me off this film.” He also was in communication with writer/director John Sayles.

To have somebody named Baraka playing for Hawaii is so apropos. “Baraka” has no narrative; it shows the diversity of our planet, skipping across continents, highlighting the people and their culture, and most importantly, the religion, they practice, without any hierarchial order.

Beckett suits our times, too. Beckett was an absurdist.

    Welcome to Hawaii, Baraka Beckett.

    33.

As a Pearl City alumni, I’ve never thought I’d live to see a day where Pearl City had a QB playing as a starter in Div 1 or actually any player.

  38. islandman October 26, 2017 8:45 am

An SEC commentator on Bobby’s show said he thinks Tua will be the starter at Alabama next season.

  39. azwarrior22 October 26, 2017 9:17 am

Hawaii fans needs to stop having that small town mentality with prepsters. Take AZ prepsters, no one cares in Phoenix if they aren’t going to ASU. Similarly on this forum, no one should care if they aren’t a UH Warrior since this is a UH Warrior Beat.

  41. A-House October 26, 2017 9:34 am

me tinks da staff mus find betta DBs or suffa da loss(es next year.

better defensive scheme may help — to let it go for 8 games in 2017 w/o change(s) does not leave a favorable image in my simple mind for the DC

is this too harsh? but, it’s my opinion.

  42. NorthShoreFan October 26, 2017 9:50 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
A-House…every team’s goal is to be better than the last game. One would think our Warriors have the same mentality. Your comments make much sense. We’ll see this week if there is progress or not. At the halfway point it’s inconceivable the D hasn’t comprehended the “scheme”.
Then again we have Warriors who don’t quit…
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  43. boolakanaka October 26, 2017 10:48 am

35—Bruddha, your alma mater had some players in my day. Brian Derby, all-state, 3 year starter at UH and mentor and coach to hundreds of high o lineman. As for Pearl City QB, look up Kevin Kamai, who could have easily played college ball, and was a strong strong kanaka at QB, last time I saw him back in the day, he was benching close to 500.
